Singapore Hawker Inspired Food Truck Launches in Sydney

Singapore Shiok Truck
Sydney foodies will have a new word to describe amazing culinary experiences, with the Singapore Shiok Truck set to hit the streets of the city to serve a taste of the real Singapore through authentic hawker-style food.

Adding to the vibrant scene of pop-up food vans, those dining at the truck from Wednesday 6th to Tuesday 12th March will be encouraged to show their appreciation of the food by exclaiming shiok! (shee-oak) - a Singlish[1] used to convey extreme pleasure and happiness, and commonly associated with food.

The Singapore Shiok Truck will have Sydneysiders salivating over seven days as it serves up a hawker-food sensation, encouraging customers to deepen their discovery of the destination by immersing themselves in the local food scene.

The delicious menu has been designed and created by MasterChef finalist and Singaporean Audra Morrice and includes Katong laksa, Sambal stingray, Nonya chicken curry and Popiah, with all dishes available for sale from $3 - $6, reflecting the affordability of feasting in a Singapore hawker centre.

"Singapore is a cultural melting pot, with a mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian and Eurasian influences; along with speciality authentic cuisines such as Chinese Hakka, Nonya and Peranakan. Modern western influences have also influenced the city's culinary diversity with everything from high-end celebrity chef restaurants through to hawker street fare." said Audra Morrice, Cook and MasterChef finalist.

"One of the best ways to discover the real Singapore is through its food; it offers an insight into the history, traditions and people of Singapore. In some countries meals can often be an excuse for a conversation; in Singapore, food is the conversation," added Audra.

The Singapore Shiok Truck will be available in prominent locations during lunch and dinner hours, including Pitt Street Mall, Hyde Park and the Overseas Passenger Terminal.

The food truck is part of the Singapore Tourism Board's 'Get Lost and Find the Real Singapore' campaign  which challenges Australians to go beyond the Singapore they know to uncover the true breadth of exciting experiences the city offers.

"While Singapore has undergone a dynamic transformation over the past few years to  emerge as an exciting, contemporary destination with world-class shopping, attractions, and entertainment, it has retained a treasure trove of local history, cuisine, culture and traditions that is just waiting to be discovered. The Singapore Shiok Truck will help bring this to life, offering Aussies a chance to whet their appetites with authentic hawker dishes that are close to Singaporeans' hearts, and to learn more about Singapore's unique local culture and stories through them", added Sandra Leong, Area Director Oceania, Singapore Tourism Board.

What the shiok!? Shiok! [pronounced shee-oak] is a Singlish expression conveying extreme pleasure & happiness, and is most commonly used in association with food; if a dish truly hits the spot, the locals would instantly say it is shiok! Diners at the Singapore Shiok Truck will be encouraged to describe their ultimate food appreciation when tasting the delectable dishes, by using the word themselves - shiok!
