It's that time of year to hit the festival grounds of the Northern Hemisphere. Many people will be travelling overseas for festivals such as Glastonbury, Burning Man, Tomorrowland, Roskilde, Sziget, and more.

It’s easy to get swept up in the festival environment and be distracted by the stages, events and people around you. But while having the time of your life, it's important to know how to keep you and your belongings safe.
Party safely

Don't push yourself or your mates to drink past your limits. You'll be more likely to make poor decisions if you've had too much to drink.

If you plan on drinking, think about getting an unopened bottle or canned drink. This can help limit what could be added to your drink unknowingly.

Know the signs and symptoms of drink spiking. If you think you or your friend’s drink has been spiked, get to safety and get medical assistance if needed. they need it. Find a map or know beforehand where the medical tent is.

Have a time and place to meet up with your friends if you get separated. There's nothing worse than not being able to find your friends among thousands of people. Phone reception could be unreliable with so many people in the same area. Make your plans before you get to the festival grounds.

Be smart about what valuables you take with you to the festival. Keep your wits about you and your belongings out of easy reach. Thieves are looking for distracted people and for items that are easily accessible.

Research the local laws where you’re going. Understand the entry rules and your visa conditions. Know the rules around drug and alcohol consumption, including the legal drinking age. The laws may be different and the consequences harsher than in Australia. If you break the law, you could be arrested or jailed.

Terrorism remains a threat across the world including in Europe and the USA. Terrorists use different methods of attack, targeting foreign tourists and locals. Crowded places like festivals can be targets for terrorism.

Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas announces the addition of Anantara New York Palace Budapest Hotel to its portfolio, a debut in Hungary and a continuation of the brand’s European expansion. Crystal River Cruises Expands 2022 Offerings with More Capacity & New Itineraries

Crystal River Cruises has announced an expansion of its 2022 offerings with the reintroduction of Crystal Mozart, the company’s grand, double-wide inaugural river ship, increasing the luxury options available to travelers on Europe’s rivers. Affectionately known as the Queen of the Danube, Crystal Mozart will offer weekly seven-night voyages Danube Dreams & Discoveries conveniently sailing round-trip from Vienna beginning March 28, 2022. With Crystal Mozart’s return, Crystal Mahler will reposition to the Rhine, Main and Moselle rivers with a variety of new itineraries.

In an industry first, Crystal Mozart will offer 38 deluxe window suites dedicated to solo travelers with no single supplement on all voyages, reducing her capacity to just 120 guests and making her the most spacious river ship, with the highest crew-to-guest ratio, in the European river industry. Crystal Mahler and her Rhine Class sister ships – Crystal Bach, Crystal Debussy and Crystal Ravel – accommodate just 106 guests, also boasting superior space ratios for all on board.

New Routes and Highlights in Store

Beginning March 28, 2022, Crystal Mozart’s Danube Dreams & Discoveries itineraries will sail from Vienna on Mondays with overnights in the Austrian capital and Budapest, as well as calls to the historic city of Esztergom, Hungary; Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia; Linz, Austria, with day trips to Salzburg; Dürnstein and daylight sailing through the breathtaking Wachau Valley.

As Crystal Mozart returns to the Danube, Crystal Mahler will now sail a variety of new itineraries ranging from five to 16 nights on the Rhine, Moselle, Main and Danube rivers, including some voyages that combine three rivers in one journey. Her new itineraries highlight the seasonal beauty of the region, including five-night summer Rhine & Moselle Summer Escapes sailings between Amsterdam and Trier; 10-night fall Splendors of the Rhine & Moselle voyages between Amsterdam and Basel; and 14-night Magnificent Europe sailings between Amsterdam and Budapest on the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers.

Crystal Mahler begins her season on April 2, 2022 with a series of Legendary Rhine and Romantic Rhine seven-night sailings between Amsterdam and Basel followed by springtime Tulips & Windmills voyages on Dutch waterways and the Rhine River, beginning April 30, round-trip from Amsterdam. These voyages showcase the once-in-a-decade Floriade Expo near Amsterdam, where the city and surrounding area transform with flora and greenery from across the globe. The voyage also visits Hoorn, Kinderdijk, Middleburg and Rotterdam, Netherlands, and Antwerp and Ghent, Belgium.

The popular seven-night Romantic Rhine and Legendary Rhine itineraries between Amsterdam and Basel, which Crystal Mahler will again offer from October through December of 2022 and are also featured on Crystal Bach and Crystal Debussy, feature overnights in Koblenz and Amsterdam; calls in Cologne, Rüdesheim and Mannheim, Germany; and Strasbourg, France, and daylight cruising through the Rhine Gorge (Middle Rhine Valley).

Along the Moselle and Rhine rivers, one of the most breathtaking waterways in Europe, guests can explore the vineyard-flanked river in the heart of the Mosel Wine Region. Convenient, new five-night summertime Rhine & Moselle Summer Escapes voyages sail between Amsterdam and Trier, with late-night stays in the lovely wine villages of Cochem and Bernkastel; the UNESCO World Heritage City of Cologne; and overnights in Trier for exploration Roman heritage sites or day trips to Luxembourg. From Trier, guests can extend their vacation with optional two-night pre- or post-cruise Extended Land Programs in Reims, France, the unofficial capital of the Champagne region. The land package includes sightseeing, tastings and transfers between Paris and Reims.

The new 10-night autumn Splendors of the Rhine & Moselle sails north- and south-bound departures between Amsterdam and Basel in September and October, during peak harvest season in the vineyards. The voyages sail through the Middle Rhine Valley and UNESCO-listed Rhine Gorge, with its storybook castles and rolling vineyards; wine valley cities of Cochem, Trier and Bernkastel (considered the epicenter of Riesling); offer day trips to charming Heidelberg via Mannheim; Koblenz, situated at the confluence of the two rivers; Rüdesheim and extended stays or overnights in beautiful Strasbourg.

For longer luxury journeys, guests can sail Crystal Mahler’s 16-night and 14-night springtime Grand Europe and Magnificent Europe itineraries, respectively, which combine sailing along the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers. Beginning and ending with overnights in Amsterdam and Budapest, the voyages offer immersive experiences throughout Germany’s riverside towns of Cologne, Rüdesheim (overnight), Miltenberg, Würzburg, Nuremberg, Regensberg and Passau; Vienna (overnight) and Dürnstein, Austria; and Bratislava, Slovakia.

Both Crystal Mozart and Crystal Mahler will offer special holiday sailings in late December. Crystal Mozart’s Danube Holiday Wonders voyage spends Christmas and Hannukah sailing roundtrip from Vienna on December 19, 2022, visiting Melk and Linz, Austria; Bratislava, Slovakia; and Esztergom and Budapest, Hungary spotlighting the wondrous experience region during the wintertime holidays. Definitely Different

If one section of this newsletter would best answer the question, “Do you have something different?” then this grouping of ideas is going to take some beating. From getting involved with your hands to getting up in the air to taking in nature, this mix of activities takes a very different path from the norm.

There is the buzz of working with bees in Copenhagen – becoming a honey thief for the day, learning all about bees, how they work and why we all need them. And sampling different honey tastes from the different districts around the city.

Make sure there are no sticky hands for the glass class of Istanbul. Learn the story of glass and how to make glass as you play with colourful pieces and old craft techniques. Take the piece you made home, as you do with the Batik workshop of Malaysia – enjoy the expression of painting that is both art and craft.

Paint in a very different way in Riga – take cans to the streets of the graffiti workshop and spray away in a safe, relaxed environment (all before taking a street art tour to compare how you did with the pros). Or play it cool and really break the ice, with ice carving (available all year round). You can also get a graffiti lesson in Zurich.

Hands are needed to drink in the Blind Bar of Budapest – only the waiters can see anything, equipped with a special device. The rest of the crowd has to find their way around this truly unique experience – and ignore the dark. All the better to head to the light then afterwards, hopping into a balloon and floating in air.

The experience turns around in Vilnius by starting the day off in a spectacular morning balloon flight – which is allowed to fly over the city itself. On landing, you can take the really very unique experience of commanding a tank and driving it round the Tankodrome tank.

Whether gentle or adrenaline, whether with nature or with art and crafts, light or dark, there is a range of really unusual things to entertain.

Go Far on Wheels!

Nothing beats getting around on a set of wheels, whether it is somewhere under pedal power, gliding under electric, or in prestige chariots of (Italian rosso) fire. We have plenty of cool ideas to get around, get the wind in your hair and get experiences ticked off the must-see list.

There is the extraordinary bicycle tour at night through the streets and the historical buildings of the Old City of Istanbul – stopping at instaspots and taking in a taste of Turkey. Or there is heading off for a gourmet picnic – vineyard style on a bicycle ride through the fabled Cape winelands of South Africa.

Vineyards and lunch on wheels can also be experienced in Barcelona on a Segway, as can a great sightseeing tour of Kiev. And electric can also make you go further (and easier) by e-scooter. Paris offers a sightseeing tour with these eco-friendly transports, off on an exciting journey through stunning and varied places of the French capital, finishing in Marais. Riga’s e-scooters are more of a beast – with extra-wide wheels they feel more like surfing than riding on these machines that ride like Harley Davidsons. And think the hills of Lisbon are too much for your legs to power round? Let the e-scooter do the work and you take in the style and the stops of the Lisbon life…

For pure glamour wheels, head to Turin and gaze at the remarkable collection of iconic cars at the National Automobile Museum, before jumping into one of the latest Ferrari models and taking a unique luxury experience behind the wheel of one of the world’s most famous (and desired) cars.

Take a trip along the Malecon, and through Metropolitan and Modern districts of Havana, past countless Instagram opportunities - that includes iconic old American cars you travel in for starters!

And if it’s revving historical engines with a difference that appeals then head to Budapest and take the wheel of the very different but as legendary Trabant, where you can get down and dirty in a Trabant Rally.

G Adventures Increases Commitment to Community Tourism With Project 100

G Adventures announced it has increased its commitment to community tourism with the introduction of an additional 25 Planeterra (G Adventures' non-profit partner) projects into its tours by 2020. This will bring the total number of projects to 100 globally, meaning 90% of the operator's small-group trips will visit a community tourism project supporting women and children, Indigenous culture and / or environmental conservation.

The new announcement supersedes the adventure operator's '50 in 5' initiative which was announced in 2015, and sought to add 50 projects to the pre-existing 25, bringing the total to 75 in 46 countries by 2020. The 50 in 5 project is now complete - 18 months early - with the announcement of the final five projects in Costa Rica, Ecuador, Botswana, Hungary, and Kyrgyzstan. Project 100 now commences as a new Planeterra initiative, with 25 new projects being announced later this year.

Bruce Poon Tip, founder of G Adventures, says giving back to local people in the communities the company travels to is built into the company's DNA, and this extended commitment to local people gives G Adventures even more opportunities to change lives through travel, for both local people and travellers.

“For us to over-deliver on our promise to build 50 community tourism projects in five years, and to now commit to 100 projects by 2020, proves our laser-focus and determination to use the power of positive impact travel to change people's lives. Each year, more than 100,000 travellers visit our 75 current projects, touching the lives of 60,000 local people annually.

The final five '50 in 5 projects' brings the total number of Planeterra projects on G Adventures tours to 75 and all are now fully implemented into selected G Adventures tours.

• Coope San Juan - San Juan - Costa Rica - Coope San Juan is a community cooperative made up of 12 families who until now have been dedicated to agriculture and natural forest preservation. Income from agriculture is limited, which led Planeterra to work with the cooperative to bring more tourism to the area resulting in an improved quality of life. 20 bicycles have been funded for the families to host travellers on cycling tours, and more than 1,000 G Adventures travellers will visit the community annually. This project is now live and can be visited on all departures of the 17-day '18-to-Thirtysomethings' Volcano Trail tour from Antigua, Guatemala to San Jose.
• Shandia Community Tourism - Ecuador - The Shandia community is inhabited by Indigenous Kichwa families who until now have had limited access to tourism. This has resulted in locals leaving for jobs in the city which puts the community at risk of losing their traditions and customs, as well as protection of their natural Amazonian environment. Planeterra and G Adventures have worked with the community to develop a cycling tour and chocolate-making class to be led by the village's youth. Each year, 850 G Adventures travellers will do this tour and stay at the Shandia Community Lodge which previously lacked the ability to attract enough customers. To visit, travellers can join an eight-day Ecuador Quest Classic tour which travels from Quito return.
• Nem Adom Fel - Budapset, Hungary - The Nem Adom Fel Foundation (meaning 'Never give up') was founded in 2005 with the mission to empower Hungarians living with disabilities, and the Roma community of the country, whose unemployment levels are higher than other Hungarians. Planeterra provided a grant to the foundation to upgrade the operations at its restaurant, the Nem Adom Fel Café and Bar. G Adventures will now take 1,000 travellers per year to the restaurant, meaning valuable income for the foundation to invest back into its programmes. All travellers on the eight-day National Geographic Journeys with G Adventures Explore Central Europe trip, travelling from Berlin to Budapest will dine at Nem Adom Fel.
• Dqae Qare San Lodge - D'Kar, Botswana - The San Lodge lodge, campsite, and wildlife area is the only freehold land owned by an Indigenous community in Southern Africa. The San are known for their warm hospitality, and the lodge provides much-needed employment for the nearby village of D'Kar, where revenue from tourism is invested in the local preschool, arts programme and museum. Planeterra has provided Dqae Qare San Lodge with a grant to upgrade their campsite where more than 1,000 G Adventures travellers will stay and learn about the history and culture of the San from their people directly. Travellers departing on the 18-Thirtysomethings Delta & Falls Overland trip, travelling from Windhoek to Victoria Falls, will stay at Dqae Qare San Lodge.
• Ak Orgo - Barskoon, Kyrgyzstan - Ak Orgo is a community social enterprise designed to celebrate cultural traditions and provide employment in a rural area of Kyrgyzstan where economic opportunities are limited. Planeterra provided funding for local tourism training and upgrades to facilities, and close to 500 G Adventures travellers per year will stop here for a traditional Kyrgyz lunch experience. They will also have the unique opportunity to learn how traditional yurts (nomadic tents) are built and the importance of this craft, as well as other traditional handicrafts. This project can be visited on all departures of the nine-day Highlights of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan trip travelling from Bishkek to Almaty and departing from June 2019.

All current and future G Adventures and Planeterra projects are selected according to the biggest benefit to the community resulting from traveller numbers. Particularly where women, youth and Indigenous people have been disadvantaged by a lack of access to education, jobs and income opportunities.

Budapest Spring Festival 30 March 22 April 2018

The 38th Budapest Spring Festival, a truly special occasion is taking place between 30 March and 22 April. The festival involves events in classical music, opera, jazz, world music, dance, contemporary circus, theatre and visual arts with world famous performers from Hungary and abroad.

There will be a dozen of venues in 2018: in addition to Palace of Arts and Liszt Academy, Vigado, Budapest Music Center, Urania National Film Theatre, Budapest Jazz Club, Akvarium Klub, Varkert Bazar (Castle Garden Bazaar), cultural institutes, theatres and museums will also be home to outstanding events.

On 8 April, Lara Fabian and on 8 May, James Blunt will give a spectacular concert in the Papp Laszlo Budapest Sportarena.

Red Bull Air Race 23 - 24 June 2018

Budapest is again a mid-season stop on the Red Bull Air Race 2018 World Championship calendar. The racetrack in Budapest will span the Danube, making it one of the most unique stops on the calendar. The unique feature of the Budapest race is that the pilots kick off each run by flying under the famous Chain Bridge, and then navigate the complex aerial course along the river.

Budapest Wine Festival always offers a nice variety of the finest wines of Hungary is best winemakers along with foreign wines, thanks to noted wine traders. 15 countries, almost 200 wineries, 5,000 wines are presented here. This wide range includes award winning wines from winemakers who have won awards and medals at well-known domestic and international competitions.

Christmas Fair - end of November - December 2018

At the end of November, Vorosmarty and Szent Istvan Squares turn into a festive market place. Cottage style wooden stalls take over these attractive spots. Imagine to smell the scent of traditional honey cookies,mulled wine, cinnamon and fir from afar.
