You Don’t Get Lost, You Get Found: Discover NSW’s Best Road Trip from Western Sydney International Airport

Western Sydney International Airport (WSI)
A new self-drive itinerary is inviting travellers to discover the spectacular diversity of regional New South Wales, connecting country towns, dramatic escarpments, waterfalls, culinary experiences and beautiful coastlines in one unforgettable Australian road trip.

With Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) opening a new chapter for travel to New South Wales, visitors have another reason to hire a car, head south and explore the destinations beyond Sydney’s famous attractions.

Eight Regions, One Unforgettable NSW Road Trip

Developed through the LG8 Visitor Economy Collaboration, the new itinerary connects eight local government areas: Campbelltown, Camden, Wollondilly, Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven and Wingecarribee.

Together, these destinations create a diverse journey through some of the most rewarding landscapes and experiences in regional NSW, from the Southern Highlands to the South Coast.

The itinerary encourages travellers to venture beyond familiar tourist routes, discover hidden gems and meet the local people who give each destination its character.

Travel creators Salt and Charcoal are bringing the journey to life through content showcasing the region’s attractions, local businesses, food experiences and outdoor adventures.

From Hot-Air Balloons to Waterfalls and Coastal Escapes

The beauty of this NSW road trip lies in its variety. Travellers can begin with a hot-air balloon experience over Camden, explore country markets and enjoy the charm of rural communities before heading towards spectacular natural landscapes.

Adventure seekers can chase waterfalls, explore rainforest environments and kayak along the Kangaroo River. Food lovers can discover regional produce, wineries, restaurants and welcoming local businesses, while visitors interested in culture can experience Aboriginal heritage and stories connected to Country.

Further south, the coastal destinations of Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama and Shoalhaven offer opportunities to unwind beside the ocean, discover scenic beaches and explore picturesque seaside towns.

The Southern Highlands adds another dimension, with village experiences, food and wine, country accommodation and beautiful natural surroundings.

Rather than rushing between attractions, visitors can use the itinerary to create a personalised holiday, allowing time to appreciate each destination along the way.

A New Way to Explore Beyond Sydney

The itinerary complements the well-known Grand Pacific Drive, encouraging visitors to combine coastal scenery with inland adventures and the distinctive character of the Southern Highlands.

For international and interstate visitors arriving through Western Sydney International Airport, the journey offers an opportunity to experience more of New South Wales in a single holiday.

Sydney residents and Canberra travellers can also use the itinerary to plan a weekend escape, a longer driving holiday or a return visit to places they may have overlooked.

By connecting eight local government areas, the collaboration demonstrates how regional destinations can work together to create a more compelling visitor experience. It also helps showcase local accommodation providers, restaurants, cultural operators, wellness retreats and outdoor adventure businesses to a wider audience.

Discover the People and Places Along the Way

Lord Mayor of Wollongong Tania Brown said the region offered much more than the destinations travellers already knew.

She highlighted the opportunity to connect country towns, mountain escarpments, waterfalls, rainforest and coastline in one journey, while meeting passionate local operators and discovering unexpected places.

With Western Sydney International Airport creating new opportunities for visitors, the message is straightforward: include regional NSW in your Sydney holiday rather than leaving it for another time.

The road trip is designed to inspire travellers to slow down, stay longer and explore at their own pace. Whether planning a long weekend, a week-long escape or a more extensive NSW adventure, visitors can select the experiences that interest them most.

Plan Your Next NSW Self-Drive Holiday

The You Don’t Get Lost, You Get Found itinerary provides inspiration for travellers seeking an Australian road trip combining nature, culture, food, adventure and relaxation.

Starting from Western Sydney, visitors can follow their curiosity through country communities, the Southern Highlands and the spectacular South Coast, discovering a different side of New South Wales along the way.

Steel Magnolias at Theatre Royal Sydney: The Unexpected Theatre Experience That Made Me Laugh, Reflect and Remember

Jessica Redmayne, Belinda Giblin, Lisa McCune,
Mandy Bishop, Lotte Beckett, Debra Lawrance
Opening night at Theatre Royal Sydney delivered one of the most unexpectedly moving theatre experiences I have had in years. Walking into Steel Magnolias, I carried no nostalgia, no expectations, and very little knowledge of what was about to unfold on stage.

I had never seen the play. I had never seen the famous movie. Friends had warned me I would not enjoy it, dismissing it as a sad “chick flick” wrapped in Southern sentimentality.

For the first ten minutes, I honestly wondered how I was going to make it to interval. I found myself focusing on the American accents and questioning whether this production was really for me.

Then something happened.

Slowly, almost imperceptibly, the performances pulled me in. The humour landed. The personalities of the women burst into life. The warmth, wit and emotional truth became impossible to resist.

Before long, I was completely absorbed.

I found myself laughing loudly at the comedy, deeply invested in the characters, and ultimately moved not by simple sadness, but by something more profound — poignancy.

The Origin of Steel Magnolias and Why It Still Resonates

Written by American playwright Robert Harling, Steel Magnolias premiered in 1987 and emerged from personal tragedy. Harling wrote the play following the death of his sister, Susan, who suffered complications related to diabetes after childbirth.

Rather than creating a story consumed by grief, Harling wrote a deeply human tribute to friendship, family, humour and resilience.

The title itself perfectly reflects the women at the centre of the story. “Magnolias” symbolise Southern elegance and grace, while “steel” represents the hidden emotional strength beneath outward gentleness.

That balance of softness and strength explains why Steel Magnolias has endured for decades, eventually inspiring the beloved 1989 film adaptation starring Julia Roberts, Sally Field and Dolly Parton.

A Story About Friendship, Community and Carrying On

Mandy Bishop, Lotte Beckett, Jessica Redmayne
Set during the 1980s in a small Louisiana town, the play unfolds entirely within a home beauty salon that functions as far more than a workplace.

Owned by Truvy Jones, the salon is staffed by a new assistant and frequented by regular clients dropping in for fresh hairstyles, neighbourhood gossip and conversations that drift effortlessly between everyday trivia, family dramas, personal dreams and life’s biggest challenges. Within its welcoming walls, the salon becomes far more than a place for beauty treatments — it is a sanctuary of friendship, laughter, support and shared experience.

Yet beneath the hairspray, humour and hair appointments lies the deeper heart of the story.

Steel Magnolias reminds us of the importance of friendship in building community, and of our connection to other people who sustain us, support us and help us find the strength to carry on through life’s most difficult moments.

The salon becomes a sanctuary. It is the social centre of these women’s lives — a place where people show up for one another, argue, laugh, comfort, tease and quietly hold each other together.

The play is rich with humour, tenderness and emotional honesty.

At its centre are Shelby Eatenton, a spirited young woman living with diabetes, and her fiercely devoted mother M’Lynn. Around them orbit a wonderfully vivid collection of personalities whose friendships feel messy, funny, loyal and deeply authentic.

What surprised me most was how genuinely funny the play is.

This is not a sombre drama weighed down by sentimentality. The audience on opening night laughed repeatedly at the sharp dialogue, comic timing and brilliantly observed personalities.

Yet beneath the laughter sits emotional truth.

For me, that truth resonated in ways I did not expect.

Ten years ago, my own life changed forever when my wife’s life support was turned off after what began as a routine operation gone wrong.

Because of that experience, the emotional landscape of Steel Magnolias struck a deeply familiar note.

Not sadness alone.

Recognition.

The play understands the complicated space where grief, humour, love and ordinary life somehow coexist. It understands how people continue talking, joking, showing up and caring for one another even when life has shifted permanently beneath their feet.

That honesty is what made the evening so powerful.

A Superb Australian Cast Delivers Heart and Humour

Mandy Bishop, Debra Lawrance, Belinda Giblin, Lisa McCune
The Australian cast assembled for this Theatre Royal Sydney production delivers exceptional performances throughout.

Lisa McCune delivers a commanding and deeply nuanced performance as M’Lynn Eatenton, bringing extraordinary emotional intelligence, fierce maternal devotion and quiet resilience to the role. Masterfully balancing steely protectiveness with aching tenderness, humour and profound vulnerability, she portrays a woman fighting to hold her world together through love, fear and unimaginable loss. McCune captures both the steel and softness at the heart of M’Lynn, revealing a mother whose unwavering loyalty, emotional honesty and deeply human fragility make for a performance of remarkable power. It is an exceptional portrayal that anchors the production with authenticity, heart and devastating emotional truth.

Jessica Redmayne delivers a standout performance as Shelby, M’Lynn’s spirited daughter, bringing infectious warmth, youthful vitality and determined optimism to the role. Balancing charm, humour, vulnerability and fierce resolve, she crafts a richly layered portrayal that captures both Shelby’s joy and fragility with remarkable authenticity. Redmayne’s emotional honesty and luminous stage presence create a character who feels vibrant, complex and profoundly human, making Shelby’s courage, independence and quiet resilience resonate deeply with the audience.

Belinda Giblin nearly steals the production as the gloriously sharp-tongued and fiercely outspoken neighbour Ouiser Boudreaux, delivering a masterclass in comic performance. Armed with razor-sharp timing, wickedly acerbic humour and a torrent of perfectly delivered one-liners, she transforms the prickly, opinionated neighbour into a scene-stealing force of comic brilliance. Yet beneath the biting wit, eccentric charm and unapologetic Southern sass, Giblin reveals flashes of warmth, vulnerability and deeply human complexity, elevating the character far beyond caricature. The result is one of the production’s most memorable, compelling and laugh-out-loud performances.

Debra Lawrance is wonderfully assured as Clairee Belcher, bringing effortless sophistication, refined Southern grace and razor-sharp wit to the role. Exuding charm, elegance and mischievous humour, she delivers a performance rich in comic precision, sparkling warmth and quiet emotional intelligence. Balancing impeccable comic timing with understated tenderness, worldly wisdom and genuine compassion, Lawrance creates a character whose wit and humanity gently anchor the ensemble. The result is a beautifully nuanced portrayal that is both deeply funny and quietly moving.

Mandy Bishop is outstanding as salon owner Truvy Jones, delivering a beautifully grounded performance filled with warmth, humour and emotional authenticity. Radiating vitality, charm and compassionate authority, she captures Truvy’s nurturing spirit, quick wit and instinctive understanding of the women who gather in her salon. Functioning as both confidante and emotional compass for this unforgettable circle of women, Bishop deftly holds together the intricate dynamics and emotional pulse of the ensemble, creating a portrayal rich in generosity, humanity and heart.

Lotte Beckett rounds out the exceptional cast with a wonderfully nuanced and beautifully measured portrayal of Annelle Dupuy-Desoto. As the salon’s newcomer, she skilfully charts the character’s journey from nervous uncertainty and social awkwardness to growing confidence and self-assurance. Balancing innocence, vulnerability, humour and emotional sincerity, Beckett brings warmth, subtlety and delightful comic instinct to the role, capturing Annelle’s emotional searching and gradual transformation with quiet assurance. The result is a richly human performance that sensitively traces the character’s discovery of belonging within the salon’s close-knit community.

Under the direction of Lee Lewis, the ensemble chemistry feels authentic and lived-in. These women genuinely convince as lifelong friends who know one another’s strengths, weaknesses, histories and heartbreaks.

A Perfectly Realised 1980s Salon Brought to Life

Jessica Redmayne, Lisa McCune
The production team deserves considerable praise for creating an immersive theatrical world that instantly transports audiences to small-town Louisiana in the 1980s.

The set design by Simone Romaniuk beautifully recreates a busy, much-loved home beauty salon filled with authentic period detail. Hooded hair dryers, styling chairs, roller sets, beauty products and hairspray immediately establish both time and place.

The image created is warm, familiar and wonderfully lived-in.

This is clearly more than a salon. It is the emotional headquarters of the women’s lives.

The colour palette cleverly embraces the visual language of the 1980s — warm pinks, apricots and corals balanced against cooler tones of teal, green and turquoise. The result feels nostalgic without becoming caricature.

Remarkably, the set itself echoes the emotional texture of the play: its humour, warmth, intimacy and underlying sadness.

The costume design by Simone Romaniuk complements the era beautifully, reflecting the personalities, aspirations and social identities of each character.

Lighting design by Paul Jackson subtly guides mood and atmosphere, shifting naturally between lively daytime scenes and quieter emotional moments.

The sound design by Brady Watkins enriches the production without ever overwhelming it, allowing the dialogue, relationships and performances to remain the heart of the storytelling.

An Opening Night That Changed My Mind

Debra Lawrance, Jessica Redmayne, Lisa McCune
Steel Magnolias at Theatre Royal Sydney proved to be exactly the kind of theatre experience I did not expect.

I arrived unconvinced.

I left profoundly moved.

What began as scepticism about accents, genre and reputation transformed into admiration for a beautifully crafted production filled with humour, humanity and emotional intelligence.

This is not simply a story about sorrow.

It is about friendship, community, resilience, memory, and the extraordinary ability people have to carry laughter and loss side by side.

For theatre lovers visiting Sydney, Steel Magnolias is one of the season’s essential productions.

2022 UCI Road World Championship full race details released

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and Wollongong 2022 have today released the full race details for the 2022 UCI Road World Championships, unveiling challenging Road Race courses, a demanding Wollongong City Circuit and highly technical Time Trial courses.

The courses, race schedules and race profiles will showcase Wollongong's landscape and highlights of the city centre, create world class competition among the sport's top athletes, and provide an outstanding spectator experience for fans in Wollongong or tuning in to the global broadcast.

The details were launched via a virtual press conference with representatives from the UCI and organising committee, Wollongong 2022, celebrating just under six months to go to the event.

Wollongong, which is recognised as Dharawal country, is preparing to welcome 1,000 of the world's best cyclists plus hundreds of thousands of spectators to the beach-front city 80km south of Sydney from 18-25 September, 2022.

The Women Elite, and Men Elite Road Races on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 September are sure to attract a competitive field and a significant audience as the battles unfold over 164.3km (women) and 266.9km (men).

After a remote start in the northern village of Helensburgh, both courses travel south toward the city centre via Sea Cliff Bridge and the many coastal townships that line Lawrence Hargrave Drive. Upon arriving in Wollongong, the riders will head west to take on the main climb of the event, Mount Keira, nestled in the striking escarpment that overlooks the city.

Peaking at 473m elevation, the Mount Keira Loop ascent climbs through sub-tropical rainforest at an average gradient of 5%, with a maximum incline of 15% just over halfway into the lengthy 8.7km climb. Navigating the 10km of descent via Kembla Heights and Figtree will separate the potential champions from the pack as the athletes prime themselves for the next challenge - Wollongong City Circuit.

Here the men will complete a punishing 12 laps of Wollongong City Circuit, and the women six laps, accounting for much of the total course elevation in the second half of the race. The challenge has a name — Mount Pleasant — an urban climb up Ramah Avenue that will test even the most experienced riders. Over 1.1km the riders will climb 119m at an average gradient of 7.7%. The potential race maker will present just 300m into the climb where the incline reaches its maximum 14% gradient, then demands a further 800m uphill effort from the athletes before they push into a fast descent.

Multiply that climb across laps of the circuit plus Mount Keira and the women will climb 2433m elevation over 164.3km and the men 3945m over 266.9km, making it comparable to a major mountain stage of the Tour de France. It will set up an open battle among a variety of athletes of different types, including General Classification and puncheur riders, and potentially determined sprinters.

The Wollongong City Circuit will be focus of the Men and Women Junior races, along with the Men Under 23, who will complete eight, four and 10 laps of the circuit respectively. Featuring some 33 turns as it travels through suburban Wollongong, the riders will have to channel their effort to relaunch quickly after each corner and keep their eyes on the race leaders weaving their way through the city streets up ahead.

The Women Elite Individual Time Trial will open the 2022 UCI Road World Championship program, racing two laps of a citybased circuit that starts on Market Street in the centre and stretches north to the suburb of Towradgi for a total race distance of 34.2km. In a historical first for the event, the Men Elite Individual Time Trial will take place over the same distance on the same day as the women's equivalent in a demonstration of gender equity for the sport.

The Men Under 23, Men and Women Junior Individual Time Trials and Mixed Relay Team Time Trial will take place on a slightly shorter circuit, however the need for speed and accuracy around the 30+ corners of the course will remain the same.

For the first time ever, UCI World Championship medals and rainbow jerseys will be awarded in the Women Under 23 category for Individual Time Trial and Road Race as part of the Elite Women's events.

The courses were validated during a UCI delegation site visit to Wollongong in late February, where the sport and technical team expressed excitement about the challenging courses and enthusiasm for the riders and fans to experience the city in September.

The full competition and course schedule and race profiles are now available at wollongong2022.com.au.

UCI President David Lappartient said the courses had the makings of an unforgettable event for athletes and spectators.
"The UCI delegation that visited Wollongong in February is very excited about the tough, technical and ambitious courses designed by the Organising Committee in partnership with the UCI.

"These courses will attract the world's top riders to Wollongong, all eager to be the athlete who triumphs in conditions that really test their skills and ability.

"The courses have also been designed to create special experiences for our spectators, with lots of activity focused around the Wollongong city centre, where the riders will pass by multiple times. Fans will be able to witness the critical moments unfold against the backdrop of a quintessential Australian beach and the beautiful escarpment."

Wollongong 2022 Race Director Scott Sunderland said the international cycling community should prepare to be surprised and challenged by the event in Australia.

"Many people have a perception that Australia is flat, open and all about the ocean - in Wollongong, there are all the elements that make road cycling dynamic and difficult, from the Mount Keira climb through the escarpment to the urban ascent up Mount Pleasant.

"We're going to see the riders really testing their strategic and athletic capabilities as they navigate the Wollongong City Circuit and Time Trial courses, which will be spectacular viewing for the on-ground crowds and broadcast viewers.

"If you think you know Wollongong and Australia, think again. The 2022 UCI Road World Championships will separate the challengers from the champions and put our coastal city on the map for fans worldwide."

Wollongong 2022 CEO Stu Taggart said the city provided unique opportunities for the event.
"Wollongong is a special place, defined by its coast, escarpment and community that embraces an outdoor lifestyle because of the unique surrounds.

"The locals are excited to welcome the world to Wollongong for what is likened to the Olympic moment for the city, where sport, culture and excellence combine for a city-wide celebration over multiple days.

"Wollongong 2022 thanks our event partners and the community for their support to put on an edition of the UCI Road World Championships like no other, that professional and amateur cyclists all over the world will remember for decades to come."

Video content of the Elite Road Race course is available on YouTube. Media assets including course maps for each event are available for download.

Federal Minister for Sport Richard Colbeck:
"We're now in the green and gold decade, on the road to Brisbane Olympics 2032 and Wollongong 2022 will give all eventgoers a taste of Olympic fever when more than one thousand athletes arrive Down Under to represent up to 75 nations in this pinnacle event for road cycling.

"The Australian Government is proud to support the 2022 UCI Road World Championships to promote cycling among the Australian community for health, well-being and environmental benefits, and to make the event accessible and inclusive to all fans, spectators and visitors."

NSW Minister for Enterprise, Investment and Trade, Minister for Tourism and Sport Stuart Ayres:

"Wollongong is one of Australia's better kept secrets - just 80km from Sydney, beautiful beaches, bordered by the Royal National Park and the epic escarpment, it offers a way of life that people dream of the world over.

"The 2022 UCI Road World Championships are supported through the New South Wales Government's 10 World Cups in 10 Years initiative.

"As the first major international sporting event on the calendar since the start of the pandemic, and one that's free to attend, it is sure to turbocharge our state's economy to the tune of $94 million through visitation and extended stays."

Wollongong City Council Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery AM:
"We're very excited to welcome the world to Wollongong for this prestigious event. It presents us with such a wonderful opportunity to showcase our city's natural beauty, as well as our enviable lifestyle to a global audience.

"We already know Wollongong is a world-class place to live, work and visit and that we're leading the way in our focus on improvements to support safer road use for everyone, and on new and exciting infrastructure like our Cringila Hills Mountain Bike Park and our criterium track. Our community's health and well-being is always front-of-mind as we celebrate the city's laid-back lifestyle that is enjoyed by our residents and guests.

"We take the honour of being the only UCI Bike City in the Southern Hemisphere with great pride and we can't wait to show the world why Wollongong is a fantastic place to experience by bike."

Wollongong 2022 Safety Manager Mark Renshaw:
"There are so many decisive features and attacking opportunities for the riders across the 2022 UCI Road World Championship courses, it's going to make for very interesting race for all the athletes, fans and officials as the action unfolds.

"Having ridden the courses several times, I can confidently say that they require riders to always be in a good position in the bunch, and a lot of mental concentration is also required on the short, sharp climbs of Wollongong City Circuit and the many turns of the Time Trial courses.

"I think we'll see a lot of riders excited by the topography of Wollongong as they get familiar with the layout of the different circuits, especially in the Elite Road Races and we will see very deserving champions of the rainbow jersey here in Australia."

Wollongong has become the only city in the Southern Hemisphere to receive the coveted UCI Bike City label, recognising the investment and commitment to make Wollongong ‘cycle friendly’ to all.

Securing the UCI Bike City label is a legacy of hosting the 2022 Wollongong UCI Road World Championships and reinforces the region’s capacity to develop cycling among the community and get more locals and visitors on bikes.

Minister for Tourism Stuart Ayres said the 2022 event and Bike City label combined would put Wollongong on the map among cycling fans globally.

“It’s fantastic to see Wollongong receive the UCI Bike City label, which will give us a new avenue to promote Wollongong, Sydney and surrounds to cycling enthusiasts and amateur riders looking for their next ‘must-visit’ destination.

“This acknowledgement demonstrates the long-term benefits an event such as the UCI Road World Championships can have for a region, which is why the NSW Government is ambitious in securing world-class events for our state,” Mr Ayres said.

Acting Minister for Sport Geoff Lee said the global recognition reinforced the extensive variety of cycling opportunities available throughout Wollongong.

“Whether you’re a road cyclist, BMX or mountain biking enthusiast, or just looking for a safe and fun ride with the family, there is something for everyone in Wollongong,” Mr Lee said.

Member for South Coast Shelley Hancock said: “This is great news for Wollongong and the South Coast and great promotion of our region that is rich in landscapes that are perfect to explore by bike.”
