Smart Travel Innovation Takes Centre Stage: IAPCO Honours Egyptian Congress Leader With 2026 Excellence Award

Mohamed Sherif
Innovation, sustainability and seamless delegate experiences are reshaping the future of global business events, and one Egyptian industry leader is proving that smarter mobility solutions can transform how major conferences operate.

The International Association of Professional Congress Organisers has named Mohamed Sherif, General Manager at ICOM DMC and a subsidiary of ICOM Group, as the recipient of the prestigious IAPCO Driving Excellence Innovation Award 2026.

Presented during the celebrated IMEX Gala Dinner in Frankfurt by IAPCO President Sissi Lignou and IMEX Founder and Chairman Ray Bloom, the award recognises Sherif’s pioneering leadership in revolutionising delegate transportation at CardioAlex 2025 through a highly effective, data-driven smart mobility system.

The achievement marks an important milestone not only for Egypt’s thriving meetings industry but also for the future of sustainable conference management worldwide.

How Smart Mobility Is Transforming Global Conferences

Large international conferences depend on flawless logistics, yet delegate transportation often remains one of the most complex and resource-intensive operational challenges.

At CardioAlex 2025, one of the Middle East and Africa’s largest cardiovascular conferences, this challenge was reimagined through technology, operational redesign and real-time decision making.

Held annually at the renowned Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Alexandria, Egypt, CardioAlex attracts thousands of cardiology professionals, researchers and global medical experts for intensive scientific programs, live case demonstrations, workshops and international collaboration.

In 2025, the conference welcomed more than 6,200 delegates across a demanding three-day schedule.

Historically, transport systems relied on conventional fixed bus allocations assigned to individual hotels. While functional, this model frequently produced overlapping routes, underutilised vehicles, rising fuel consumption and growing environmental concerns.

Under Mohamed Sherif’s leadership, ICOM Group challenged this long-standing approach.

The Award Winning Smart Shuttle System Changing Delegate Travel

To address recurring transport inefficiencies, ICOM Group assembled a specialised cross-functional taskforce bringing together experts in web development, operational logistics and ground transport management.

The result was the innovative CardioAlex Smart Shuttle System.

Rather than assigning buses to specific hotels, the new model introduced a dynamic round-robin fleet structure. A smaller number of continuously circulating buses serviced multiple hotel pickup locations and the conference venue through carefully timed rotations.

The system combined three integrated technological layers designed to improve both operational performance and delegate convenience.

A delegate-facing mobile application used GPS technology to identify the nearest pickup point while providing real-time estimated bus arrivals. Drivers utilised a dedicated application supporting dynamic route sequencing and live fleet navigation. Meanwhile, a centralised operations dashboard delivered instant oversight of vehicle locations, passenger loads and operational adjustments when required.

This intelligent approach transformed transportation into a responsive, data-led service model built around flexibility, visibility and efficiency.

Sustainability And Delegate Experience Working Together

The operational results delivered by the CardioAlex Smart Shuttle System were both immediate and measurable.

In 2025, CardioAlex managed its largest accommodation footprint to date, encompassing 18 hotels and approximately 1,600 rooms, while operating with just 47 buses throughout the conference period.

This represented a dramatic 47.8 per cent reduction in fleet size compared with 2023 and a 44 per cent reduction compared with 2024.

Importantly, these gains were achieved without compromising delegate comfort, accessibility or service quality.

The streamlined fleet produced significant sustainability benefits, including lower fuel consumption, reduced emissions and substantial savings in transport operations, vehicle hire and driver logistics.

Freed resources could then be redirected towards strengthening scientific programming and enhancing the overall delegate journey.

The project demonstrates that sustainability, operational excellence and premium guest experience can function as complementary objectives rather than competing priorities.

Egyptian Leadership Driving The Future Of Event Management

In recognising Sherif’s achievement, IAPCO praised the project as a powerful example of practical, future-focused innovation capable of raising standards across the international meetings sector.

With 19 years of experience in international congress operations and event strategy, Sherif has developed a strong reputation for building collaborative, innovation-led operating models capable of delivering complex large-scale conferences.

ICOM Group itself has become a respected force within the medical and scientific meetings landscape across the Middle East and Africa. Based in Egypt, the Professional Conference Organiser brings more than 28 years of expertise in managing major conferences while maintaining a strong commitment to sustainability, operational precision and world-class delegate experiences.

As the business events sector continues to evolve, the CardioAlex Smart Shuttle System offers a compelling blueprint for how intelligent logistics can create smarter, greener and more efficient conferences for the future.

Egypt showcases prominent tourism projects

L-R Dr. Ghada Shalaby, Vice Minister for Tourism, Ministry
of Tourism and Antiquities and Amr El-Kady, CEO,
EgyptianTourism Authority at the Egypt Tourism Authority
press conference at ATM 2024.
Egypt showcased its commitment to enhancing the tourist experience and attracting new visitors from the UAE, GCC, and globally by highlighting the country’s tourism potential, forthcoming projects, and future initiatives at Arabian Travel Market 2024 (ATM) in Dubai as it looks to build on the record 15 million tourists welcomed in 2023.

Dr. Ghada Shalaby, Egypt’s Vice Minister of Tourism and Antiquities for Tourism Affairs, said: “Egypt is gearing up to attract a wide range of travelers based on its commitment to diversifying its tourism offerings. The Ministry has worked to unveil a group of new products that meet the evolving preferences of travellers, from health tourism to meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions tourism, all the way to the innovative Umrah Plus product and the attractive Cairo City Break program.”

Dr. Ghada noted that cooperation lies at the heart of Egypt's tourism strategy. By strengthening partnerships between tourism entities in Egypt, the Far East, and GGC countries, among other Arab countries, the Ministry aims to combine efforts in promoting Egyptian destinations and ensuring unparalleled experiences for visitors. Through collaborative endeavours, the tourism sector is ready to flourish and grow.

“Egypt’s commitment to infrastructure development remains steadfast. From enhancing transportation networks to enhancing airport facilities and expanding railway systems, significant investments are being made to improve accessibility and connectivity across the country. These initiatives play an essential role in facilitating smooth travel experiences for visitors to Egypt, said Dr Ghada

Amr El-Kady, CEO, Egyptian Tourism Authority, mentioned that Egypt is witnessing a qualitative shift in its approach to tourism, as by embracing the dynamism of the private sector, the country is embarking on a journey of liberation and promoting an enabling environment for investment and innovation in the travel sector. From this standpoint, the Arabian Travel Market, held in Dubai, constitutes an essential platform to complete these efforts and raise its status at this level.”

Mr. Al-Kady pointed out that the Egyptian Tourism Authority is taking advanced steps to enhance customer experience at archaeological sites. A prime example of this is the opening of the new visitor centre, planned as part of the upcoming transformation of the Giza Pyramids in a few weeks.

Egypt's tourism sector continues to chart a path of growth and resilience. After a record-breaking year in 2023, with 15 million visitors flocking to its shores, compared to 4.9 million in 2021, further expansion is expected in 2024. With a firm focus on enhancing visitor experiences, strengthening partnerships, and investing in infrastructure, Egypt is well-positioned to keep its economy on an upward trajectory in the tourism landscape.

The newly launched Cairo City Break program will reshape the capital's appeal by promoting Cairo as a long weekend destination. Egypt presents the emerging destination of Ras El Hekma – a relaxing haven located along the picturesque Egyptian coastline with ancient monuments and cultural attractions. Eco-friendly Hop-on Hop-off buses will be launched, enhancing the accessibility and sustainability of the tourism experience. A new road will be opened later this year to reduce the journey time from Luxor to Hurghada from 5.5 to 4 hours.

A new reform of the tourism industry has been introduced, which includes steps towards deregulation and liberalisation. Egypt has allocated a staggering 22% of its GDP over the past seven years to comprehensive infrastructure development. The state aims to double the capacity of hotel rooms in the country, which will increase from 220 to 245 room nights during the next five years.

Eco Nubia: a model for reviving Egypt's heritage while preserving the environment

The ecolodge, consisting of nine rooms built from granite and mud, also has facilities for a wide range of activities, including kayaking and swimming, sightseeing and Nubian craft markets

Access Multimedia Content

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast, March 29, 2023/ -- Located within a short distance from the famous Aswan Dam, the Temple of Philae, on the islet of Aguilkya, immerses visitors in the history of ancient Egypt. Dedicated to the protective goddess Isis, its bas-reliefs and murals make it an exquisite sanctuary in the country.

Aboard his small motorboat, Ahmed Yehia sails serenely towards this treasure of Egyptian heritage, nestled in the heart of the ancient Nubian lands.

"Just next door, I discovered Bigeh, a magical island, abandoned by its inhabitants several years before. I wanted to help revamp and repopulate it while creating value in a sustainable way," says Yehia, the founder-manager of Eco Nubia, the first ecolodge in Aswan.

Relaunched in January 2018, the project received support from the "Tanmia wa Tatweer," Egypt’s Entrepreneurship Development initiative funded by the Danish-Arab Partnership Program and implemented by the African Development Bank. It aims to revive the Nubian culture and create a new ecotourism place in Egypt, serving local and international customers. Using natural materials from several regions of the country, the revival of Bigeh has created jobs for the local community.

“In partnership with the Nubian community, we have put Bigeh on the map of Egyptian ecotourism," says Yehia. Open all year round, the fully equipped lodge overlooks the temple of Philae. It has a banquet room and a restaurant that serves traditional Nubian cuisine based on organic products grown on-site.

The ecolodge, consisting of nine rooms built from granite and mud, also has facilities for a wide range of activities, including kayaking and swimming, sightseeing and Nubian craft markets.

Eco Nubia has brought the abandoned island back to life. The facility now employs about 30 people, a third of them women. Since 2018, five Nubian houses have been rebuilt and furnished in the Nubian tradition. An integrated network of electricity, water and sewerage has also been created for the islanders to suit the environment.

The facility has attracted tourists globally. It has won commendation from the United Nations World Tourism Organization and the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism for its outstanding achievements in sustainable development. The ecolodge has attracted local and international media, including the American channel CNN which devoted a special program to it.

“Our own farm produces what we consume," says Ahmed Yehia.

Owners of the facility have built a community center and workstations for eco-friendly Nubian crafts and have created new jobs for about 50 Nubian families, including women. With an area of 80 square meters, the community center was built according to the principles of Nubian architecture. It is now enthroned on top of a small mountain in order to have a panoramic view of the surroundings, which carry within them a part of the history of ancient Nubia.

"We also want to help the people of Bigeh rebuild their homes using traditional materials and the same ancient techniques of Nubian architecture, while preserving the island's natural environment," Ahmed Yehia says.

Tripadvisor’s Year in Review: All the good in 2021

From new trips to helpful reviews, travellers kept sharing the good out there with each other.

Travel in 2021 may have had its starts and stops, but one thing was for sure this year: travellers’ appetite to get out and explore showed no signs of waning. While travel as we know it may have looked different this year, people still got their fix in some way or another. As we close out the year, today Tripadvisor, the world's largest travel guidance platform, looks back over the last 12 months at some of the ways we reengaged the world as travellers connected, supported and guided each other to discover all the good out there in 2021.

The pandemic has continued to make a profound impact on travel and tourism. However, despite lockdowns and travel restrictions far and wide, travellers remained hopeful and positive that travel will recover.

In fact, more than 44 million new travellers joined the Tripadvisor community in 2021 and 2.5 million travellers posted a review for the first time in a year.

Guidance and people-powered travel remain at the heart of Tripadvisor’s purpose. Without tips, recommendations and suggestions from people who have been there before, Tripadvisor wouldn’t be the invaluable resource that it has become for the millions who visit the platform every month. Travellers like @alessandrofL127YD deserve a special mention - his 358 reviews in 2021 alone got a whopping 26,259 upvotes from fellow travellers who found them helpful.

Reviews aside, here are some other inspiring insights from 2021 worth celebrating:

  • Travellers were big on Trips this year
    • More than 7 million new Trips (travel itineraries) were created on our platform -- If you took a trip a day, it would take you more than 13,830 years to do them all.
    • The planning was endless, both the little escapes and the big occasions. Just ask the travellers who named their trips "Mom needs a getaway so no Momster comes out" and "Where is Alexis going to propose?
  • Travellers took the time to appreciate each other and the interactions they did manage to have, whether virtually or in person
    • “Thank you” was mentioned over 41 million times in reviews and forums this year.
  • Despite the impact of COVID-19 and its effect on travel, travellers managed to find bright spots everywhere
    • Tripadvisor’s "Highlight of the day!!!!" forum has 5000+ posts (and counting) that saw traveller updates both big and small.
  • As travel recovers, new businesses have been popping up everywhere this year to welcome guests back through their doors
    • 309,270 new accommodations, 109,110 new experiences and 175,286 new restaurants listed their businesses on Tripadvisor in 2021
  • Travellers were longing for sunshine this year. These were some of the favorite sunny destinations travellers were searching for this year
    • Honolulu, Hawaii - saw 3.2x more Experiences bookings than pre-pandemic“Everything in Hawaii seems to come with a story, and that is what makes it special." - longboard
    • CancĂşn, Mexico - saw a 17% increase in searches compared to 2020“I daydream about Cancun during rush hour on my way back home from work." - Adaza
    • Punta Cana, Dominican Republic - saw a 96% increase in searches compared to 2020"I can't think of anywhere else so tropical and gorgeous, yet so affordable at the same time." - SunLvr101
    • Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt - more than doubled (106%) its searches compared to 2020“The water was so blue and clear and filled with beautiful coral reefs...We will definitely be back!” - Lisa B
    • Hurghada, Egypt“Hurghada is less hassle than anywhere else in Egypt, and a great place for activities and relaxing.” – khaled elio
  • In addition to sunny destinations, travellers were *obsessed* with outdoor experiences. Based on bookings done this year, these are some of the most popular destinations for outdoor experiences in 2021
  • Looking ahead to 2022, travellers are more than ready to get out of their work-from-home setups and back to exploring the world.
    • There are over 66,000 Trips with “2022” in the title already saved

“2021 was full of ups and downs in travel but despite that, it was heartening to see how travellers showed up for each other, continuing to support, appreciate and share how they travelled where they could,” said Steve Kaufer, President & CEO at Tripadvisor. “While a lot remains unknown in the year ahead, we remain hopeful and positive that travel will continue to recover, and travellers will be able to get back out to finding the good out there.  As a company, Tripadvisor and the Tripadvisor Foundation will do its part to help those in need get through this period of change.”

In addition to planning their return to travel, it was inspiring to see how our traveller community mobilized to support pressing social issues and celebrate their diversity.

  • Tripadvisor joined the Billion Mile Challenge led by Welcome.US and Miles4Migrants to secure 70,000 flights for Afghan evacuees ready to resettle but in need of a flight to their new home. With the support of our traveller community, Tripadvisor contributed over 49 Million Miles and 3,200 flights, including a match and contribution from the Tripadvisor Foundation, to this first-of-its-kind effort. They are 80% to their billion mile goal but still need support to help them cross the finish line. You can donate your miles, points, or dollars to join the challenge here.
  • Our support for the tens of thousands of Afghan evacuees also included a $1 million contribution from the Tripadvisor Foundation to World Central Kitchen's operations at key arrival destinations (including Dulles, Virginia, U.S.A.; Madrid and Rota, Spain; and Doha, Qatar). Their efforts served more than 170,000 hot halal meals sourced from 14 local restaurants to individuals and families fleeing Afghanistan - many of whom hadn't eaten a meal in days.
  • We highlighted the importance of diverse representation by building content with advertising partners to celebrate Global Pride and yearly commemorations of Black History and Hispanic Heritage. We also completed landmark research specific to better understanding the needs of travellers within the Hispanic community.
  • Our travellers are joining us and Kiva in making a difference with life-changing loans this holiday season. For every loan to an entrepreneur, the Tripadvisor Foundation is providing another $25 to lend again - up to $150,000 raised. You can click here to make a loan that changes lives.
