AIPC Future Shapers Programme: Shaping the Future of Convention Centres

AIPC future shapers
The International Association of Conference Centres (AIPC) has launched the Future Shapers programme, an exceptional international initiative designed to empower emerging leaders in the convention centre industry. This programme offers a unique platform for talented individuals to gain the skills and insights required to lead convention centres into the future, while fostering a sense of community among industry leaders from around the globe.

The goal of the Future Shapers programme is threefold:

  1. To provide a tailor-made executive management programme aimed at developing the next generation of convention centre leaders.
  2. To offer AIPC members an opportunity to retain and foster talent within their organisations.
  3. To create lasting value for the AIPC community by generating innovative business cases that have the potential to reshape the way convention centres are managed, while offering participants the chance to build lasting connections with senior leaders globally. Participants will also become part of an exclusive alumni network after graduation.

The programme is structured around three core components:

  • Masterclasses: Participants will attend a series of seven expert-led masterclasses, each designed to deepen their knowledge and understanding of key areas in convention centre leadership and management.

  • Industry Challenge: Working in groups, participants will identify a pressing challenge facing the convention centre industry, propose a solution, and develop a detailed business case. This solution will be compiled into a white paper and published to the AIPC community.

  • Challenge Presentation: Groups will prepare a 20-minute presentation to be delivered at the prestigious AIPC Annual Conference in Shenzhen, China, from June 22-25, 2025. This presentation will outline the proposed solution to the identified industry challenge, showcasing the innovation and strategic thinking of the participants.

The selection of the winning team will be based on two main criteria: the quality of the business case and the effectiveness of the presentation. A jury composed of AIPC board members, venue CEOs, and business partner CEOs will evaluate the business case based on innovation, market and product analysis, and financial feasibility. The presentation will be judged by the vote of the AIPC Annual Conference 2025 participants.

The AIPC Future Shapers programme offers a fantastic opportunity for emerging leaders to gain invaluable experience, broaden their professional networks, and make meaningful contributions to the future of the convention centre industry. The application process is open to AIPC members, with detailed criteria available on the AIPC website.

In addition, AIPC was excited to collaborate with AIME 2025 to offer even more opportunities for industry professionals to connect and exchange ideas. This partnership underscores AIPC's commitment to fostering leadership and innovation within the global convention centre community, further strengthening the shared goals of both organisations in supporting the evolution of the business events sector.

FABULOUS FOOD DRIVEN EVENTS

Fresh off the back of AIME’s 2024 Welcome Party in Melbourne Australia, event partner and Grazeland Director John Forman explores the power of food in networking.

Networking made easy

Networking is not just about exchanging business cards and attending conferences; it’s about connecting on a deeper level. In many cases, food is the perfect catalyst for these meaningful interactions. At AIME’s Welcome Event, attendees discovered the transformative power of food as they walked between Grazeland’s 50+ food and beverage outlets. They were immersed in a dining extravaganza that sparked connections and ignited conversations.

Food is a universal language that brings people together. It transcends cultural barriers and creates a sense of community. It allows individuals from diverse backgrounds to bond over a shared love of culinary delights. Communal dining and moveable feasts, like the Welcome Event, provide unique networking opportunities for the business events industry. There’s something magical about breaking bread together, which fosters a sense of camaraderie that lingers long after the event ends.

AIME Neon Carnival

The 2024 Welcome Event embraced the AIME Neon Carnival theme. Food offerings were designed to be nostalgic and eaten by hand. Guests indulged in delectable bites, flavourful skewers, and mouthwatering plates from around the globe. These dishes reflected diverse culinary traditions which satisfied attendees’ palates while encouraging mingling and connection-building.

One of the highlights of Grazeland is its inclusivity of cultures and cuisines, reflecting Melbourne’s diverse population. The many food and drink outlets offer an unparalleled variety of flavours and caters to most dietary requirements. This inclusivity fosters community-building, which is what AIME’s Welcome Event is all about.

Innovation and Creativity Abounds

In the ever-evolving events industry, food-driven events have become pioneers of innovation and creativity. Event businesses around the globe have been exploring points of difference, experimenting with food offerings, and revolutionising food delivery. From sensory interactive experiential dining experiences to embracing street food culture, these events captivate and delight attendees, leaving a lasting impression.

At Grazeland, authenticity and quality are the cornerstones of success. The permanent stall holders take pride in delivering unparalleled culinary experiences, where the theatre of food production adds another layer of allure. Just like Cirkus Bizurkus’ futuristic characters, Grazeland’s dishes inspired delegates to reach for their phones and capture magical culinary moments, becoming part of the immersive experience.

A Truly Melbourne Experience

AIME Welcome Events always aim to show off this city, and Grazeland is the epitome of Melbourne charm. Situated against the backdrop of the iconic Melbourne skyline, Grazeland’s layout evokes the city’s renowned laneways and vibrant foodie culture.

Melbourne’s multicultural population is reflected in Grazeland’s many stalls. From Middle Eastern to Italian and Asian-inspired gatherings, we can create tailor-made experiences that speak directly to delegates. Allowing them to immerse themselves in rich cultural traditions.

Greener Grazing

Sustainability is at the forefront of both Grazeland and AIME’s agenda. Just as the Neon Carnival evokes a futuristic vibe, Grazeland leads the way in sustainable practices. All packaging and serving materials at Grazeland are made from plant-based materials, ensuring they are 100% commercially compostable. AIME’s Neon Carnival tapped into our comprehensive waste management system, where even the rubbish bins were made from cardboard! This commitment to sustainability resonates with AIME’s values, providing an eco-friendly environment for delegates to connect and thrive.

It is my hope that this Welcome Event showed the power of food in networking and community-building. More than just a meal; food is an opportunity to forge connections, exchange ideas, and celebrate diverse cultures. Just like AIME itself.

“AIME and its host city Melbourne inspire connection and collaboration, driving commerce for both Australia and the wider Asia-Pacific. Kudos to event managers Talk2 Media and Events for delivering an exceptional 2024 event.”

AIME 2024 was the 31st time AIME has been held and it remains the first tradeshow on the annual international business events calendar.

In 2024, AIME's popularity among global exhibitors continued to expand, with 63% growth on 2023 numbers. Exhibitors included Convention Bureaux, convention centres, hotels and resorts, unique venues, event technology companies, production and AV companies, Destination Management Companies (DMCs), airlines, cruise companies and suppliers from every Australian state as well as international destinations including Japan, New Zealand, Africa, Fiji, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Korea, Singapore, USA, Canada, Germany, Italy, Malta, Norway, Spain, UK/Ireland, Vietnam, India, Maldives, Monaco, Sri Lanka and more.

For the first time, at AIME 2024 there was a dedicated zone for the world’s boutique experience makers - The Boutique - that showcased more than 20 operators offering bespoke and highly customisable experiences. Another new zone for 2024, the DMC Network brought together Destination Management Companies from all over the world.

Both initiatives were embraced by attendees and provide just two examples of the annual improvements and creative innovations brought to life each year on the AIME show floor.

This year the annual AIME Welcome Event was held at Grazeland with the theme ‘Neon Carnival’, which more than 1,700 people attended, while AIME’s education Knowledge Program, with its theme ‘The 4 Ps of Glocalisation’ attracted a total attendance of more than 1,850 people.

Solidifying its status as the largest international meetings and events industry gathering in the Asia Pacific region, the conference presented a golden opportunity for MCEC to showcase its unique capabilities and reinforce its position as a premier international events venue.

Led by the popular Knowledge Program, themed The 4 Ps of Glocalisation: People, Planet, Purpose and Profit, was sponsored by Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre. The future centre in Geelong is to be operated by Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Trust, current operators of MCEC.

Inspired by the name gifted by Wadawurrung Traditional Owners, Nyaal Banyul, meaning ‘open your eyes to the hills’, showcased its new brandmark that draws upon layers of Country that unite to form an eye, symbolising enlightenment and perspective.

Unveiling a refreshed tradeshow stand design highlighting both venues, MCEC encouraged attendees to savour the best of Victoria through an interactive food and cocktail activation. Attendees were invited to experience native ingredients like lemon aspen, Davidson plum, and rosella. Expertly crafted, signature beverages added a flavourful and traditional touch to the overall experience.

Natalie O’Brien AM, Chief Executive of MCEC was proud to once again host AIME, showcasing not only the best of what MCEC has to offer but also the future Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre.

“AIME is a flagship event for the business events industry to come together, network, exchange ideas and forge partnerships. As Australia’s largest convention centre, MCEC is the perfect venue for an event of this scale and influence,” Ms O’Brien said.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT AIME 2024

The Asia Pacific Incentives and Meetings Event (AIME) has today announced that the 2024 event will be the biggest AIME in a decade.

The event, to be held in February in Australia at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, will host more than 600 buyers from around the world, welcome 3500 visitor buyers and 570 exhibitors from various business events sectors.

This represents phenomenal growth of 63% on the number of exhibitors at AIME 2023 - and cements AIME’s position as the premier event for the international business events community in the region.

International destinations attending AIME for the first time since the Covid pandemic include Fiji, Korea, Macau, USA, Canada, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, India, Maldives, Italy, Malta, Norway, Monaco and UK/Ireland.

They join countries including Japan, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Africa returning again to the AIME showfloor.

In total, 33 countries will be represented at AIME in 2024.

AIME Event Director Silke Calder says the phenomenal growth of AIME 2024 cements its position as one of the premier events on the global business events calendar.

“Off the back of our incredible 30th anniversary AIME in 2023, this year we return even bigger and better than ever. We are excited to welcome the business events community back to Melbourne and are thrilled with the incredible support we’ve received from international destinations along with Australia’s convention bureaus - every state in Australia will be represented at AIME next month,” she says.

“More than 600 Hosted Buyers will attend AIME 2024, which is an amazing growth of 51% on 2023. We will host buyers from Australia, New Zealand, South-East Asia, North Asia, India, USA, Canada, Europe and UK.

“It sets the scene for a truly amazing 31st AIME.”

Calder says the team is thrilled to announce an official AIME podcast will launch in 2024. Episodes will be recorded live at AIME 2024 in collaboration with AIME’s podcast production partner, Connected Event Group, in its podcast studio on the show floor.

“The podcast aims to take listeners behind the scenes of the dynamic and ever-evolving world of events. Join us as we delve into the latest trends, share expert insights, and explore innovative approaches shaping the future of the industry,” she says.

For the first time at AIME, in 2024 there will be a dedicated zone for the world’s boutique experience makers. The Boutique will showcase more than 20 operators offering bespoke and highly customisable experiences.

Another new zone for 2024, the DMC Network will bring together Destination Management Companies from all over the world.

The hotel zone continues to grow in popularity – testament to the post-Covid bounce back of travel - and in 2024 occupies a footprint that is 50% larger than AIME 2023.

Other showfloor features and activations include the Accor Hosted Buyer Lounge, the Ideas Academy presented by Spice and four new interactive breakout spaces to recharge attendees.

Kicking off the three-day event on Monday 19 February, AIME’s Knowledge Program is themed “The 4Ps of GLOCALISATION”, with two keynote speakers: award-winning marketing executive Lisa Ronson and bestselling author, TV host and founder of the 100 Things movement Sebastian Terry.

Curated by El Kwang and BEAM with the support of an Advisory Committee consisting of eight industry leaders from the APAC region, the program draws inspiration from the AIME global community’s wish of harmonising the symbiotic relationship between global insights with local nuances.

The Knowledge Program will commence with a networking lunch presented by the future Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre.

As always, the hugely anticipated AIME Welcome Event will be another highlight of the three-day show. This exclusive evening is open to Hosted Buyers, Exhibitors, Media Partners, and VIPs. Visitor Buyers can elevate their experience by upgrading their ticket. More details on the not-to-be-missed Welcome Event will be announced soon.

Melbourne Convention Bureau CEO Julia Swanson says she is proud of MCB’s involvement as a key player in the growth of the business events industry through AIME.

“For close to a third of a century, as owners of AIME, Melbourne Convention Bureau has been bringing the business events industry together, building connections and sharing knowledge at AIME, right here in Australia’s events capital, Melbourne,” she says.

“Just like the Australian Open is the first tennis Grand Slam of the year, AIME is the first international trade show of the business events sector. And we are delighted to kick start the international calendar for 2024.”

AIME 2024 will run 19 – 21 February, 2024 at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

AIME 2024 KNOWLEDGE PROGRAM TO UNCOVER THE 4Ps OF ‘GLOCALISATION’

The Asia Pacific Incentives and Meetings Event (AIME) has today announced details of its highly anticipated Knowledge Program for the 2024 event to be held at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) in Australia.

The theme for 2024, “The 4Ps of GLOCALISATION”, draws inspiration from the AIME global community’s wish of harmonising the relationship between global insights and local nuances.

Exploring the intricate dynamics of glocalisation's transformative impact will be two magnetic keynote speakers.

With a career spanning more than 25 years at some of Australia’s best known consumer brands - including as Coles, Tourism Australia, Westpac, Telstra, Visa International, David Jones and Carlton & United Breweries - Lisa Ronson is an award-winning marketing executive with an extensive track record of building strong consumer brands, leading high-performing teams and growing retail sales and market share.

Bestselling author, TV host and founder of the 100 Things movement Sebastian Terry, integrates individual evolution with professional development and his one-of-a-kind story has become a powerful catalyst for personal growth and organisational transformation.

Hosted and curated by BEAM Founder and Chief Engager and 2024 AIMEbassador El Kwang, the Knowledge Program will launch AIME on 19 February 2024. Joining the keynote speakers from AIME’s speaker bureau partners Saxton Speakers Bureau (Saxton) and ICMI Speakers & Entertainers (ICMI), a mix of industry business leaders and renowned professionals will address more than 600 global event professionals attending the Knowledge Program on the first day of AIME 2024.

Breakout sessions across the day will highlight how to align a “Glocalisation” mindset with the pivotal 4Ps - People, Planet, Purpose, and Profit - to achieve deeper brand engagement and sustainable business success.

AIME Event Director Silke Calder says the 2024 Knowledge Program will provide unparalleled insights and inspiration for event professionals working across corporate, association, not-for-profit and supplier sectors.

“We reflected on the feedback from last year’s program and are excited to work with El Kwang of BEAM and a passionate Advisory Committee to carefully curate a program that aims to spotlight luminaries and trailblazers, fostering an environment where participants can select the specific ‘P’ that resonates most profoundly with their unique business objectives and professional growth,” she says.

Lisa Ronson says she hopes with her keynote address Knowledge Program attendees will gain a practical and principles-based approach to apply to create better leadership and stronger cultures.

“I’m excited about sharing real world examples of what to do - and just as importantly, what not to do - to improve the culture of an organisation, or any group,” she says.

Sebastian Terry says he is looking forward to sharing his story at AIME and imparting a framework that will allow Knowledge Program attendees to create and activate their most meaningful goals.

“To me, Glocalisation is the idea that the foundation to creating a thriving and connected community is ensuring that we empower individuals and local teams to become the best version of themselves within a like-minded network,” he says.

As part of the 2024 Knowledge Program, Geelong’s future convention centre, Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre, will sponsor an exclusive food and beverage showcase across the day’s programming.

Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) Chief Executive, Natalie O’Brien AM says: “As the future operators of Nyaal Banyul, the centre will embody this year’s theme of ‘Glocalisation’, highlighting the rich offerings of the region and providing unique experiences for attendees, while incorporating global insights and trends.”

The AIME 2024 Knowledge Program is attended by Hosted Buyers, Media, Exhibitors and Visitor Buyers who upgrade their ticket, but opportunities for education and inspiration continue for all attendees on the following days of AIME, with the Ideas Academy presented by Spice Magazine.

The Ideas Academy is an intimate space providing visitors access to short, thought-provoking panel discussions and sessions. Ideas Academy sessions will run continuously on Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 February and are free for all attendees. Bookings are not required.

AIME 2024 will run 19 –21 February, 2024 at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Four reasons Japan is a top incentive destination

1. Japan inspires new ideas that cultivates innovation

As a country, Japan embraces its ancient traditions while constantly developing cutting-edge technology. The juxtaposition of the ancient and the modern comes naturally, and this duality captivates and inspires visitors.

2. Japanese hospitality sets a whole new standard

Omotenashi (hospitality) is interwoven through Japan’s culture; visitors will notice it everywhere: from their hotel’s check-in desk, to relaxing in an onsen (hot spring), or the station attendant bowing as the train arrives exactly on time.

3. Japanese culture is a catalyst for team-building

Experiences such as traditional festivals, sushi-making and taiko drumming workshops will bring your team together by offering challenges as well as an insight into Japanese culture.

4. Japanese culture has existed with nature since ancient times

Many associate Japan with skyscrapers and neon lights, but visitors can find oasis at temples, shrines and gardens. Under two hours from any major city you can discover natural vistas, mountains, forests, and rivers.
