After two years of virtual events, we also had our first in-person Destination Mekong Summit. DMS22, taking place in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, was a great success, and we would like to thank all speakers, volunteers, sponsors, and partners.

We are looking forward to an exciting new year with many new initiatives and look forward to working with all of you to support a sustainable tourism recovery, build futures for communities, and create a strong private sector in the Mekong Region.

Escape The Capital...To The South. Experience The Beauty Of An Emerging Destination At Chumphon For 4 Days And 3 Nights

Malin Phato Rafting Service
chumphon
is one of the provinces in southern Thailand that many people might have looked over. Would you believe that our Trip to an emerging Destination this time will consist of a lot of “unseen” destinations that you’ll fall in love with? We’ll stay at a seaside HomeStay at Kram Bay, try fresh seaFood, join a Rafting trip to explore nature, hike Doi Ta Pung, visit the peak at Khao Thalu, shop at a night market and much more!

Before we begin on the journey of beauty, let’s take a look at the itinerary for this trip first.

We departed Bangkok in the evening of 24 July and drove to Chumphon.

DAY 1 travel to Malin Phato Rafting Service.

  • Eat lunch at Sun Sai Seafood
  • Spend the night at Dan Dome Homestay at Kram Bay.

DAY 2 Travel up to get beautiful shots of Khao Thalu at Doi Ta Pung.

DAY 3 Visit Khao Dinso viewpoint.

  • Relax and stay the night at Talay Sai at Thung Wua Laen.

DAY 4 Souvenir Shopping at Por Ta Hin Chang.

  • Return to Bangkok.

If you’re ready, what are we waiting for? Let’s visit this emerging destination in the very best way.

On this trip, we drove to all of the destinations in Chumphon. We began our trip in the evening of 24 July. The travel time from Bangkok to Chumphon is approximately 6 hours. The gas cost us around 3,500 Baht round-trip (we filled up twice during the trip).

DAY 1 travel to Malin Phato Rafting Service

We left the hotel at 08:00 Hrs. to go to the Malin Phato Rafting Service chumphon.

The Malin Phato Rafting Service Chumphon is an environmental travel Destination that has been in service for 24 years. The activity that can’t be missed is a scenic rafting Trip led by Uncle Long (the rower). We got on the raft at the pier which was approximately 5 kilomitres away (don’t forget to wear a lifejacket before getting on the raft). The rafting trip was roughly 2.5 hours. During the trip, we got to appreciate the nature and observe numerous plants, dip in Cool refreshing water, and stop by several orchards to taste fresh mangosteen, rambutan, and durian picked right from the trees.

After the trip, we cleaned up and got ready for the “rafters’ meal” that was included in our rafting trip package. Whoever visits this place must try the meal since it is phenomenal. Pa Lek is a great chef. There are 7 dishes for this one and only meal in Chumphon, which includes orange curry with wild banana stalks, Edible fern in coconut milk, mixed vegetable soup, Long Pae chilli Paste, stir-fried Bai Liang with egg, fried Local mackerel, banana leaves omelette, and rice in bamboo shoots. Refills are available for every dish, except for the omelette.

March – May is the high season when most tourists visit the Malin Phato Rafting Service. Moreover, there is an annual rafting festival on every second Saturday of February, which is organised by the district to raise funds for the community. People in the community will get together and help out when tourists visit. Since their primary occupation is agriculture, this is another way to distribute income to them.

If you’re interested, call Pa Lek to make a reservation at Tel.: 08 9592 8376 (a reservation must be made at least 1 day in advance since their staff need to prepare the rafter and the meals).

You can find get more information at facebook.com/malinraftingservice/

The Malin Phato Rafting Service opens at 10.00 Hrs.

The rafting trip costs 400 Baht per person and 600 Baht per person if including the meal. For children below the age for 12, it’s half price at 200 Baht for the rafting trip, and 300 Baht including the meal.

Furthermore, there is a HomeStay with air conditioner, which costs 1,300 Baht per person for adults, and 700 Baht per person for children younger than 12 years old.

The Malin Phato Rafting Service is located at 72/1 Tambon Phato, Amphoe Phato, Chumphon 86180

Our next Destination was a lunch spot at Sun Sai seaFood.

Sun Sai Seafood is a seafood Restaurant
Sun Sai Seafood is a seafood Restaurant on the Beach with Accommodation on the side. They have been selling seafood for 20 years. There are both indoor and outdoor seats for us to choose from, but the most popular area would be bamboo arches by the beach because of the beautiful scenery and chilled vibe. Moreover, we can go for a dip and enjoy Cool breeze at Bang Nam Chuet sea while gazing out to see Ko Phitak in front of us. The fresh seafood starts at 150 Baht and a cooked to Order dish starts from 45 to 320 Baht.

recommended dishes that you must order here are shrimps in tamarind sauce, fried fish with herbs, spicy horseshoe crab roe salad, sweet and sour soup with squid roe and Sun Sai spicy salad. For the beachside accommodation, it’s just a few steps away from the beach. Room rates start from 600 to 900 Baht.

Our Accommodation tonight was the Dan Dome HomeStay at Kram Bay.

Dan Dome Homestay
Ban Kram Bay is an environmental and ecological tourist destination. This small Village comprises 20 households. We chose to stay at Dan Dome Homestay, which belongs to Uncle Jak. Uncle Jak is a funny man. Anyone who has met him would definitely get a good laugh from his jokes. Uncle Jak’s accommodation is designed in a fisherman’s style. There are three houses in total: a small house for less than 8 guests, a medium house for 10 guests and more, and a large house for everyone, including Uncle Jak.

Since this is a homestay, we had to bring personal belongings; such as, soap, toothPaste and toothbrush. There’s no air conditioner in the bedrooms, but there’s a mattress, pillow, mosquito net, and a fan for us to truly experience the nature.

The accommodation cost 900 Baht per person.

With this price, what did we get from Dan Dome Homestay?
  • A night in the large house.
  • 3 meals (we arrived in the evening, so we only had Dinner and breakfast. We had stir-fried Bai Liang with egg, steamed crab, fish with chilli sauce, and boiled squid for dinner, and fish porridge for breakfast.
  • Activities: Free squid catching and plankton watching (depending on the day and opportunity) You definitely shouldn’t miss the blue plankton watching tour at night because it’s absolutely stunning. This is one of the “unseen” destinations that we mentioned earlier. We guarantee that you’ll definitely not be disappointed.

Dan Dome Homestay offers full service to guests from a refrigerator, toilets, bathrooms, dishes and cutlery, to free Internet connection. However, you must wash your dishes and clean up after yourselves. Pets aren’t allowed. Check-ins are at noon or in the evening depending on your preference.

If Snorkelling and exploring corals are your cup to tea, a 12-person Boat rental is available for 1,000 Baht. There are free kayaks available on the Island as well. The entrance fee to the island is 40 Baht for adults, 20 Baht for children. The boat ride from our accommodation to Ko Kula took approximately 20 minutes

On the way to Ko Kula, Uncle Jak took a boat out to release some horseshoe crabs back to the sea since his house is an educational centre and horseshoe crabs nursery. This is called “grilling horseshoe crab roe” by returning it to nature. We really admired this since Uncle Jak put his heart into doing something for the greater good and to preserve the lives of these aquatic animals without expecting anything in return. Kudos to Uncle Jak!

For those to want to experience this lifestyle and participate in the fun, Local activities. Contact Tel.: 08 6941 7046 to make reservations before 21.00 Hrs.

For more information, click on facebook.com/DanDomeHomestay/

Find some of the most unique Ema across Tokyo here.

From Tokyo to you, we wish you a wonderful festive season and look forward to seeing you again in 2023!

Thailand offers ‘VAT Refund’ for tourists

Further enhancing Thailand’s reputation as a popular shopping destination for travellers from around the world, is the VAT Refund for Tourists scheme which offers holidaymakers a refund on goods they purchase during their trip.

To qualify for the refund, goods must be purchased from stores displaying the ‘VAT Refund for Tourists’ sign, and be to the value of at least 2,000 Baht (VAT included) per day per store. The total value of all goods purchased must be at least 5,000 Baht per person per trip.

The goods must be taken out of Thailand by the tourist within 60 days of the date of purchase through any of the international airports in Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang), Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, Hat Yai, U-Tapao, Krabi, and Samui.

In the case the VAT refund is made at a refund location in the city, departure from Thailand must be within 14 days of this date.

Here are some important points to remember:

At the time of purchase
When purchasing the goods, the tourist must present his/her passport and ask the store to issue a VAT Refund Application for Tourists form (P.P.10) along with the original tax invoice/s for the purchase. The passport number must be correct on the form.

*In the case of consumable goods, these must be sealed along with the message ‘No Consumption Made While in Thailand’.

At the airport when departing Thailand
The purchased goods, of which the total value must be 5,000 Baht or more, must be presented along with the VAT Refund Application for Tourists form and original tax invoice/s to a customs officer for inspection before check-in.

In the case of luxury goods (jewellery, gold, ornaments, watch, eyeglasses, pen, mobile or smart phone, laptop or tablet, handbag, and/or belt) of which the value is 10,000 Baht or more per item, and carry-on goods of which the value is 50,000 Baht or more per item, these must be hand carried and showed again at the VAT Refund for Tourists Office after passing through immigration.

At the VAT Refund for Tourists Office, if the refund amount is not over 30,000 Baht with insurance for the tax refund amount, the payment will be made in cash (Thai Baht).

The refund can also be claimed by post to the Revenue Department of Thailand, or by drop-box in front of the VAT Refund for Tourists Office at the airport, and at the downtown refund office locations.

Marine Biologist Dives Into Hotel's Sustainability Effort

Banyan Tree Krabi's new Sustainability Coordinator
Tipwimon Rattanawongwan
Ms Tipwimon Rattanawongwan, a marine scientist from Kanchanaburi in Thailand, has joined Banyan Tree Krabi as Sustainability Coordinator.

Tipwimon, formerly a Marine Biologist at Four Seasons Koh Samui, brings a wealth of experience to the team, including a spell at Phuket Marine Biological Center and as a Foundation Coordinator at the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation Phuket.

Banyan Tree Krabi, which opened in 2020 with 72 pool suites and villas, continues to embrace and expand its commitment to sustainability, headed by Sustainability Manager Thepsuda Loyjiw, who oversees projects at both the Andaman beachfront hotel and its sister resort Banyan Tree Samui.

Banyan Tree Samui won international plaudits in 2020 when Thepsuda and her team successfully protected and nurtured the nests and eggs of a rare green turtle on the resort’s beach, resulting in the birth and survival of more than 200 hatchlings.

“Ms Tipwimon will be a valuable addition to our team as we work continuously to create a carbon-free footprint at each of our resorts,” said Thepsuda. “Among her targets will be a focus on resource conservation, recycling and upcycling, pollution reduction, waste elimination, and limiting energy consumption.”

The Banyan Tree Hotels group is renowned as a wellness brand with strong eco-friendly policies. Among Banyan Tree Krabi’s industry-recognized awards is a “Green Hotel Award - Gold Certification,” presented by Thailand’s Department of Environmental Quality Promotion in recognition of the resort’s ongoing efforts to efficiently manage energy, waste and natural resources.

The 5-star property, located on tranquil Tubkaek Beach facing the uninhabited limestone islands of Than Bok Khorani Marine National Park, looks to follow in the gentle footprints of Banyan Tree Samui which in 2018 became the first hotel in Thailand to be awarded “Gold Certification” at a single-property level by Earthcheck, the world’s leading scientific benchmarking, certification and advisory group for travel and tourism.

Banyan Tree Krabi’s recent sustainability initiatives include an Earth Day beach clean-up, and the introduction of Forest Bathing, a nature-based educational tour for guests, including children, to help raise awareness about environmental conservation and protecting local flora and fauna.

Record Numbers Delivering for The Whitsundays

The Whitsundays

Tourism in The Whitsundays has broken all records this year, with National Visitor Survey (NVS) data released today revealing a record 923,000 domestic visitors, who spent $1.5billion dollars in The Whitsundays, an increase of 179% on 2019 data.

Testament to the wide variety of experiences available and unique location, visitors to The Whitsundays stayed a total of 4.9 million nights in the year to 30 September 2022, an increase of 73% based on 2019 figures.

Commenting on the survey, Tourism Whitsundays Chief Executive Officer, Rick Hamilton said these results just cement what everyone in The Whitsundays already knows, The Whitsundays is the best place to holiday.

“Select domestic markets have always known about the attraction of The Whitsundays, but the growth we are seeing in domestic visitation shows that more of Australia is now familiar and confident about this unique holiday experience.

“These results once again underline the significant contribution tourism makes here. As a region we rely on tourism for 1 in 3 jobs. We have world-class operators, accommodation options and businesses all working to deliver outstanding holidays to vacationers in The Whitsundays, whatever their budget,” Mr Hamilton said.

While there has been a record increase in interstate travellers, 274,000 up 18.9% on 2019, it is Queenslanders who are making up 69% of visitors.

“It is encouraging to see more of Australia discovering and experiencing The Whitsundays because we can compete with anywhere in the world for the range of experiences, unique attractions and location,” Mr Hamilton said. “However, Queenslanders are taking advantage of The Whitsundays, which is right on their doorstep.

Tourism Whitsundays Chair, Julie Telford understands why The Whitsundays is getting record visitation from inter and intra state travellers.

“Queensland is such a diverse State and travelling within its border can take you through the rainforest, outback, surf beaches and the wonderful Whitsundays by car, bus, train, plane and boat. It’s no wonder we’ve seen so many Queenslanders rediscover their love of The Whitsundays.

“Visitors are staying an average of 5.2 nights this year, increasing almost a day compared to results from March 2022 because there’s so much to do and enjoy in The Whitsundays that every minute of that time can be booked onto a different experience,” said Ms Telford.

The Whitsundays is the most tourism-reliant area in Queensland with 1 in 3 jobs directly related to tourism, and 40 per cent of all visitation to the Great Barrier Reef departing from within the region.
