LATAM Travel Misconceptions: Discover the Real Latin America

Colombia
Looking Beyond the Headlines

For many travellers, the first impression of Latin America may come from television news, social media or stories about backpacking adventures from decades ago. These impressions can create misconceptions about what it is really like to travel through this remarkable part of the world.

The reality is that Latin America is enormously diverse, with more than 20 countries offering different cultures, landscapes, cuisines, cities and travel experiences. A holiday in Argentina can be completely different from a journey through Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Chile or Costa Rica.

Is Latin America Safe for Tourists?

Safety is one of the most common concerns for first-time visitors. News reports about crime, political events or drug cartels can sometimes create an impression that the entire region is unsafe for tourists.

In reality, conditions vary considerably between countries and destinations. Like travelling in any major international city, visitors should take sensible precautions against opportunistic theft, particularly in crowded tourist areas and on public transport.

Researching the destination before departure, following local advice, securing valuables and choosing reputable accommodation and transport can all contribute to a more enjoyable journey.

Latin America Is Much More Than Beaches

Colombia
Another misconception is that Latin America is primarily a destination for beach holidays and tropical resorts. Travellers who are not interested in spending their entire holiday beside the sea may be surprised by the extraordinary range of alternatives.

Visitors can trek through the Andes, explore ancient archaeological sites, experience Amazon rainforest adventures, discover colonial cities, visit vineyards, explore deserts and glaciers, encounter extraordinary wildlife or experience the vibrant culture of some of the world's most exciting cities.

From mountains and rainforests to deserts, islands and historic towns, Latin America offers experiences for almost every type of traveller.

Why Can a Luxury Holiday Cost So Much?

Some visitors are surprised when they discover the price of luxury travel in Latin America. A high-end Latin American holiday can sometimes cost as much as a luxury European journey or African safari.

Remote luxury lodges and boutique hotels can be particularly expensive because transporting supplies, employing staff and maintaining sophisticated facilities in mountains, deserts, rainforests and other isolated locations can be challenging.

Limited numbers of premium rooms in sought-after destinations can also mean that travellers are competing for a relatively small supply of luxury accommodation.

The Joy of Discovering Somewhere Different

Colombia
Travelling to a familiar destination can feel reassuring because friends and family may already have visited. Latin America can initially seem less familiar, which is precisely what makes discovering it so rewarding.

Travellers can experience new flavours, languages, traditions, landscapes and ways of life while creating memories that are very different from a conventional European holiday.

The greatest misconception may simply be that Latin America can be understood from a headline or a stereotype. The region is far too diverse for that.

A World of Travel Experiences

For tourists prepared to explore beyond the familiar, Latin America can provide extraordinary journeys. Whether the goal is adventure, culture, wildlife, food, history, relaxation or luxury, there are destinations capable of creating memorable experiences.

Rather than viewing Latin America as one destination, travellers can discover a collection of remarkably different countries and regions, each offering its own reasons to visit.

Travel Information

Travellers should check the official tourism website of their chosen Latin American destination before travelling for current information about attractions, entry requirements, local conditions and travel advice.

Discover the Colombia Beyond the Highlights: Colombian Journeys Creates Meaningful Travel Experiences for 2026 and Beyond

Santander
Colombia is a destination that rewards travellers who look beyond the familiar. From the colourful streets of Cartagena and the energetic atmosphere of Bogotá to the coffee landscapes, Caribbean coast, Amazonian regions and extraordinary cultural traditions, the country offers an impressive diversity of experiences within one destination.

For travel companies looking to introduce their clients to a more authentic side of Colombia, Colombian Journeys provides the local expertise, creativity and destination knowledge to transform a Colombian holiday into a carefully crafted travel experience.

With more than 20 years of experience creating and operating travel experiences throughout Colombia, Colombian Journeys is a B2B destination management company specialising in FIT, groups and MICE travel. Its dedicated teams work with travel partners to create tailor-made programs based around individual traveller interests, preferences and expectations.

The result is a more personalised approach to Colombia, where the journey is designed to go beyond the traditional sightseeing highlights.

A Local Expert for Tailor-Made Colombia Travel

Choosing a local DMC can make a significant difference when planning a complex international itinerary.

Colombian Journeys combines detailed destination knowledge with local supplier relationships and operational expertise to help travel companies develop programs that are both distinctive and practical. The company works across Colombia, creating itineraries for independent travellers, groups, incentives, meetings and events.

For FIT travellers, this can mean designing a journey around personal interests such as Colombian gastronomy, culture, history, nature, coffee, adventure or local communities.

For groups and MICE clients, the possibilities expand to include carefully coordinated logistics, accommodation, transportation, activities, events and memorable experiences designed around the objectives of the group.

The company's public profile describes its services as covering FIT and tailor-made tours, groups and MICE, with destination management support across Colombia.

Experience the Colombia That Lies Beyond the Traditional Tourist Trail

Vaupes
Colombia's major destinations are undoubtedly worth visiting, but the country becomes even more rewarding when travellers have the opportunity to connect with its people, traditions and landscapes.

A tailor-made Colombian itinerary can combine iconic destinations with less conventional experiences, creating a journey that feels personal rather than simply following a standard sightseeing route.

Travellers might discover the historic character of Cartagena, explore Bogotá's cultural attractions, travel through the coffee-growing regions or venture towards Colombia's Caribbean landscapes. More adventurous itineraries can reach remote natural environments and destinations such as the Lost City, while special-interest programs can be created around food, nature, culture, art or local traditions.

Colombian Journeys' approach is to understand what each traveller or travel group wants from Colombia and then build the itinerary around those expectations.

That flexibility is particularly valuable for Australian and New Zealand travel companies seeking fresh Colombia experiences for clients who may already have travelled extensively throughout South America.

Responsible and Meaningful Travel in Colombia

Sustainable tourism is becoming an increasingly important consideration for travellers and travel businesses, and Colombian Journeys places responsible travel at the heart of its operating philosophy.

The company says that, as a Travelife Partner, sustainability and responsible tourism are embedded into its approach. Its programs reflect principles including working with locally owned businesses, supporting community-based initiatives, promoting authentic cultural experiences and respecting local cultures and environments.

This philosophy recognises that tourism can create benefits that extend beyond the traveller.

When visitors spend money with local businesses, engage with community-based experiences and learn directly from people connected to a destination, tourism can contribute to local livelihoods while creating more meaningful experiences for travellers.

Colombian Journeys also publicly outlines sustainability measures that include efforts to reduce paper use, minimise environmental impacts and encourage lower-impact transport where practical.

For travel companies developing responsible Colombia itineraries, this provides an opportunity to combine memorable holidays with a stronger connection to the communities and environments that make the destination special.

Why Colombia Is an Ideal Destination for Tailor-Made Travel

Bogota
Few South American destinations offer Colombia's combination of landscapes, cultures and experiences.

The country's geography creates enormous variety. Travellers can move from the Andes to the Caribbean, from sophisticated urban centres to rural coffee landscapes and from historic towns to tropical environments.

This diversity makes Colombia particularly well suited to tailor-made travel.

A couple interested in food and culture can experience a completely different Colombia from an incentive group seeking adventure and team activities. A family can have a program built around hands-on cultural and nature experiences, while a luxury traveller can explore Colombia through carefully selected accommodation, private touring and exclusive experiences.

For travel advisors, the ability to customise the journey also creates opportunities to sell Colombia according to the interests of individual clients rather than presenting a one-size-fits-all itinerary.

Strong Support for Australian and New Zealand Travel Partners

For travel businesses in Australia and New Zealand, having a local commercial contact can make working with an overseas DMC considerably easier.

Colombian Journeys is supported in these markets by Priscila Mills, Director of Feel Latin America. She acts as a commercial representative and a bridge between Colombian Journeys and travel partners in Australia and New Zealand.

This local connection helps travel professionals communicate more easily, discuss opportunities and request assistance when developing Colombian programs for their clients.

Feel Latin America is based in Australia and operates within the travel industry, with its public company profile listing Sydney as its headquarters.

For Australian and New Zealand travel advisors considering Colombia for their clients, this regional representation provides another avenue for building a relationship with the destination specialist.

One Contact for Multi-Destination South America

Capurganá
Colombia can also be combined with other South American destinations to create longer and more diverse itineraries.

Colombian Journeys is part of Terra Sur, a network of destination management companies across South America. Through this network, travel partners can explore multi-country programs using a coordinated approach.

For a travel company, this can simplify the process of planning a journey that combines Colombia with other South American destinations, with one operational contact and one invoice.

This type of collaboration can be especially useful for clients planning extended South American holidays, luxury journeys, special-interest programs and incentive travel.

Travel Trade Resources and Sales Support

Colombian Journeys offers travel partners access to resources designed to make selling and planning Colombia easier.

Its sales support includes destination information, sample itineraries, product information and premium experiences for high-end and luxury travellers.

Travel companies can also request access to Colombian Journeys Web Connect, which provides newsletters, rates, product updates and destination photography resources.

For agencies wanting to promote Colombia on their own websites or in marketing campaigns, the team can also develop tailor-made itineraries based on the needs of a particular market and client profile.

This creates an opportunity for travel advisors to move beyond generic destination content and present Colombia programs that are relevant to their own customers.

Training and FAM Trip Support for Travel Professionals

Coffee triangle
Destination knowledge is one of the most powerful tools a travel professional can have when selling an emerging or increasingly popular destination.

Colombian Journeys provides destination training and support for familiarisation trips, helping travel professionals gain first-hand knowledge of Colombia and understand the experiences they can recommend to their clients.

FAM trips can be particularly valuable because experiencing Colombia personally allows travel advisors to speak about the destination with greater confidence and detail.

For businesses developing Colombia sales strategies for 2026 and beyond, destination training can also help advisors identify the right Colombian experience for different client profiles.

Looking Ahead to Colombia Travel in 2026 and 2027

As travellers increasingly seek authentic, personalised and meaningful holidays, Colombia is well positioned to appeal to clients looking for something beyond conventional tourism.

The destination combines major cultural attractions with spectacular landscapes, diverse regional identities, culinary experiences, adventure and opportunities for genuine local connection.

Colombian Journeys is also supporting travel partners with information about its fixed group departures for 2026 and 2027, available in English upon request.

For travel advisors, tour operators and travel companies, this provides another way to explore Colombia as a destination for future group programs and customised itineraries.

A Different Way to Discover Colombia

Eastern Plains
The Colombia experience does not have to end with ticking off the country's most famous attractions.

The most memorable journeys can be those that introduce travellers to the people, flavours, landscapes and stories that give a destination its character.

That is the philosophy behind Colombian Journeys: combining local expertise, personalised itinerary design, responsible tourism and strong operational support to create Colombia travel experiences that are distinctive, authentic and meaningful.

For travel professionals seeking a trusted Colombia DMC for FIT, groups, luxury travel or MICE programs, Colombian Journeys offers an experienced local partner capable of turning ideas into carefully managed journeys.

For Australian and New Zealand travel businesses, the additional support of Feel Latin America provides a valuable regional connection when developing Colombia programs for clients.

Colombia is ready to be explored. The question is not simply where to go, but how to create a journey that travellers will remember long after they return home.

Discover the Authentic Colombia: A New Generation of Travel Experiences for Australian Travellers

Colombia is emerging as one of South America's most intriguing destinations for travellers seeking something beyond the traditional tourist trail.

From Caribbean beaches and colourful cities to Amazonian rainforest, Andean landscapes, coffee country and extraordinary cultural traditions, Colombia offers remarkable diversity within one destination. Yet for many travellers, the most memorable discoveries can be found away from the familiar highlights.

That is where Terrahonda, a Colombian Destination Management Company, is creating a different way to experience the country.

Describing itself as a "travel workshop", Terrahonda designs tailor-made journeys for international travel agencies and businesses, connecting visitors with Colombia's communities, culture, nature and landscapes through carefully crafted experiences. Its approach is based on local knowledge and direct relationships within the destination.

For Australian travel advisors looking to introduce clients to a destination that feels fresh, authentic and distinctive, Colombia presents an increasingly compelling opportunity.

Meet Daniel Velásquez: The Face Behind the Table

Daniel Velásquez
For Australian travel advisors considering their first Colombia booking, having a knowledgeable local contact can make all the difference.

Daniel Velásquez is Terrahonda's Sales Lead for Australia, Asia, Canada and Portugal. A Colombian who now calls Australia home, Daniel provides a bridge between Australian travel professionals and the destination where he grew up.

His role is particularly valuable for advisors wanting practical assistance when developing Colombia itineraries for their clients.

Rather than navigating an unfamiliar destination from a distance, travel professionals can work with someone who understands both the Colombian destination and the Australian travel market.

This personal connection reflects Terrahonda's wider philosophy of building relationships between international travel businesses and local Colombian suppliers and communities.

Colombia: A Destination of Extraordinary Diversity

Colombia is one of the world's most biodiverse countries, with an extraordinary variety of landscapes and ecosystems.

Travellers can move from the Caribbean coast to the Andes, from colourful cities to coffee-growing regions and from tropical forests to the Amazon and Orinoquía.

Terrahonda's destination portfolio extends across six broad Colombian regions: the Pacific, Greater Colombian Caribbean, Eastern Andes, Western Andes, Amazon-Orinoquía and Colombian Massif.

This geographical diversity makes Colombia particularly attractive for travellers who want to combine different types of experiences within a single holiday.

A journey could incorporate history and architecture in a major city, community-based experiences in a rural area, wildlife and nature in the Amazon, culinary discoveries in a regional destination or adventure activities surrounded by dramatic landscapes.

Beyond the Traditional Colombian Highlights

Bogotá, Medellín and Cartagena are among Colombia's best-known destinations, but the country offers much more than its famous cities.

For experienced travellers, the opportunity lies in discovering places and experiences that reveal a different side of Colombia.

Terrahonda specialises in designing alternative and sustainable routes that encourage travellers to connect with local communities and discover the country from within. Its current offering includes more than 130 experiences across Colombia.

This approach is particularly relevant for travellers who have already visited many of the world's major destinations and are searching for something genuinely different.

Instead of simply photographing an attraction and moving on, travellers can spend time learning about local traditions, meeting community members, understanding regional history and experiencing the landscape through the eyes of people who live there.

A Colombian Travel Workshop

Terrahonda describes its model as a travel workshop rather than simply another travel supplier.

The company says it has more than 12 years of experience operating journeys around Latin America and works directly with local communities and businesses to create personalised travel experiences.

Its focus is primarily B2B, working with international travel agencies and companies rather than selling directly to the travelling public.

For travel advisors, this means Terrahonda can act as a destination partner, helping design and operate experiences according to the needs and expectations of individual clients.

The company says it can co-design itineraries for partner agencies while managing the logistics of a client's journey from arrival in Colombia through to departure.

Tailor-Made Travel for FIT and Groups

One of Terrahonda's key services is tailor-made travel for independent travellers and groups.

Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all itinerary, the company develops journeys around the interests of the traveller.

A couple seeking culture and gastronomy can have a very different Colombian experience from an adventurous family, a group of friends interested in nature or a corporate incentive group.

This flexibility can be especially valuable for Australian travel advisors who want to sell Colombia as a personalised holiday rather than a standard package.

Terrahonda manages the logistical details behind the journey, allowing the advisor to focus on understanding the client's aspirations and matching them with the right experiences.

Cultural Immersion and Community Experiences

Culture is at the heart of Terrahonda's approach.

The company offers community and cultural experiences involving Afro-Colombian, Indigenous and rural communities, with more than 130 curated experiences available throughout Colombia.

These encounters can provide travellers with a deeper understanding of Colombia's diverse cultural identity.

For visitors, cultural immersion might mean learning about traditional ways of life, meeting local artisans, discovering regional food traditions or hearing stories directly from community members.

For communities, carefully managed tourism can create opportunities for local employment and economic participation.

This creates a form of travel where the experience is not simply about what the visitor receives, but also about the relationships created along the way.

Nature, Adventure and Ecotourism

Colombia's natural diversity provides enormous opportunities for adventure and ecotourism.

Terrahonda creates nature-based journeys extending from the Caribbean coast to the Amazon rainforest, with itineraries designed for travellers seeking stronger connections with the natural environment.

The country's varied geography allows for experiences ranging from rainforest exploration and wildlife encounters to hiking, adventure and discovery of remote landscapes.

For travellers who prefer active holidays, Colombia can offer a compelling combination of nature, culture and adventure.

For those who prefer a slower pace, nature-based itineraries can instead focus on observation, local knowledge, conservation and appreciation of the environment.

Colombia for Incentive Travel and MICE

Colombia is also increasingly relevant to the business events and incentive travel market.

Terrahonda designs corporate journeys for international businesses seeking incentive travel, team development and transformational experiences in Colombia.

The destination offers a strong combination of culture, hospitality, nature, gastronomy and adventure, allowing incentive programs to be designed around experiences rather than conventional sightseeing.

For a corporate group, an incentive itinerary could combine city experiences with rural encounters, culinary activities, outdoor adventures or community connections.

This creates opportunities for businesses to reward employees while providing experiences that participants are likely to remember long after returning home.

A Growing Opportunity for Australian Travel Advisors

Colombia's profile in the Australian travel market is gaining attention.

In August 2026, ProColombia conducted its first tourism trade mission to Australia, with Colombian tourism businesses meeting travel wholesalers and agencies in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. The initiative highlighted Australia's importance as a strategic international tourism market for Colombia.

Terrahonda was among the Colombian DMCs participating in ProColombia's Australian trade activity, with the company identified as a bespoke experience designer for international agencies, specialising in sustainable routes, community connections and local knowledge.

For Australian travel advisors, this growing industry engagement provides an opportunity to learn more about Colombia and develop relationships with destination specialists on the ground.

Why Colombia Can Surprise Experienced Travellers

The appeal of Colombia lies partly in its ability to challenge expectations.

Travellers may arrive expecting colourful cities, coffee and Caribbean beaches and discover a country with a much broader cultural and geographical story.

There are historic communities, Indigenous traditions, Afro-Colombian heritage, remarkable biodiversity, regional cuisines, contemporary arts scenes and landscapes ranging from mountains to rainforest and coast.

For experienced travellers, that sense of discovery can be particularly valuable.

The destination can be positioned not simply as somewhere to visit, but as somewhere to explore.

Travel with Local Knowledge

One of the strongest advantages of working with a Colombian DMC is access to destination knowledge that is difficult to replicate from overseas.

Terrahonda's model is built around local relationships and knowledge, with the company stating that it works directly with communities and local providers to create authentic experiences.

For travel advisors, this can provide greater confidence when designing more adventurous or less conventional itineraries.

It also allows experiences to be tailored around the interests of individual clients rather than simply following a standard tourist route.

A Destination Ready to Be Discovered

Colombia offers the ingredients today's experienced traveller increasingly seeks: diversity, authenticity, culture, nature and meaningful encounters.

Terrahonda's approach adds another dimension by giving international travel agencies a local partner capable of designing and operating personalised experiences throughout the country.

For Australian travel advisors, Daniel Velásquez provides a direct connection to that opportunity.

As Colombia continues to strengthen its presence in the Australian tourism market, the destination is well positioned to become an increasingly attractive choice for travellers looking for something beyond the expected.

The next Colombian holiday could be about far more than seeing the highlights.

It could be about meeting the people, discovering the stories and experiencing the landscapes that make Colombia unique.

Terrahonda works with international travel agencies and companies to design tailor-made FIT, group, cultural, nature, adventure and MICE experiences in Colombia. The company states that its services are focused on B2B partnerships rather than direct sales to the public.

Planning a Trip to Colombia

Australian travellers should check the latest Australian Government travel advice before booking or departing for Colombia. As of 13 August 2026, Smartraveller advises Australians to exercise a high degree of caution in Colombia overall and notes that conditions can vary significantly between regions. Travellers should review current regional advice, entry requirements, transport information and travel insurance requirements before departure.

A Little Taste of Colombia: Discovering Las Originales Cafecitas Galletas con Café

Las Originales Cafecitas
Sometimes it is the smallest gifts at a travel event that leave the biggest impression.

While attending the Colombian Travel Seminar recently at the Kimpton Margot Sydney, I was given a small 35 g packet of Las Originales Cafecitas Galletas con Café, Colombian coffee cookies from Café Quindío.

It may have been a small packet, but it delivered a delicious taste of Colombia.

For anyone who enjoys coffee and biscuits, these little coffee-flavoured cookies are a delightful combination of two simple pleasures. After tasting them, I could immediately understand why Cafecitas are described as the perfect accompaniment to a cup of coffee.

A Taste of Colombian Coffee Culture

Coffee is an important part of Colombia's identity, and Café Quindío has transformed that much-loved ingredient into something a little different with its Cafecitas coffee cookies.

Las Originales Cafecitas are made with Colombian coffee and have been created to complement coffee drinking. Café Quindío describes them as having the flavour of 100 per cent Colombian coffee, together with a touch of milk and vanilla. Their soft texture is designed to melt in the mouth, while the delicate coffee aroma adds another layer to the experience.

The cookies are also distinctive in appearance, being shaped like tiny coffee beans. This makes them particularly appropriate for a product that combines Colombia's coffee heritage with the simple pleasure of a biscuit.

My Little Packet of Cafecitas

The 35 g packet I received at the Colombian Travel Seminar was just the right size for a small taste.

Opening the packet, there was an inviting coffee aroma, followed by the unmistakable appearance of the miniature coffee-bean-shaped biscuits.

I enjoyed them, and my verdict was simple: delicious.

The coffee flavour is noticeable without being overpowering, making the biscuits particularly enjoyable for anyone who appreciates the taste and aroma of coffee. The combination of coffee, milk and vanilla creates a pleasant sweetness, while the soft texture makes them an easy and enjoyable treat.

They are the sort of biscuits that encourage you to reach for another one.

Made for Coffee Lovers

Cafecitas are particularly well suited to enjoying alongside a cup of coffee.

There is something especially appealing about pairing a coffee-flavoured biscuit with coffee itself. Rather than competing with the drink, the biscuit reinforces the coffee experience, creating a simple combination that would work equally well as a morning treat, an afternoon indulgence or a small dessert.

The official Café Quindío product information lists the Cafecitas in 100 g and 200 g formats, as well as a display containing eight individual 35 g packs.

That individual 35 g format would also make them particularly convenient for travel, meetings, conferences and events.

A Small Biscuit with a Colombian Story

What I particularly enjoyed about receiving the Cafecitas at the Colombian Travel Seminar was that the biscuits were more than simply a snack.

They provided a small edible introduction to Colombia.

Travel seminars are an opportunity to discover destinations through presentations, conversations and the people representing them. Food and drink can add another dimension to that experience, allowing visitors to discover a destination through its flavours as well as its landscapes and attractions.

In this case, a small packet of coffee cookies provided a taste of Colombia's famous coffee culture.

The product is manufactured using ingredients including wheat flour, corn starch, powdered milk, egg and macadamia, according to Café Quindío's product information.

Perfect for a Colombian Coffee Break

Las Originales Cafecitas
I can easily imagine Las Originales Cafecitas being served with Colombian coffee as part of a relaxed morning or afternoon coffee break.

They would also make an appealing little gift for travellers wanting to take home a taste of Colombia, or for coffee enthusiasts looking for something different to accompany their favourite brew.

For me, however, the enjoyment came from discovering them unexpectedly at the Colombian Travel Seminar.

A 35 g packet may not sound like much, but sometimes a small taste can create a lasting memory of a destination.

My Verdict

Having been given the opportunity to try Las Originales Cafecitas Galletas con Café at the Colombian Travel Seminar in Sydney, I was impressed.

They are delicious little coffee cookies with a distinctive Colombian character, a pleasant coffee flavour and a soft texture that makes them very easy to enjoy.

For coffee lovers, they are certainly worth discovering.

And if you happen to be travelling in Colombia and come across a packet of Las Originales Cafecitas, my advice is simple: give them a try.

You may find, as I did, that one small packet provides a surprisingly delicious taste of Colombia.

About Café Quindío

Café Quindío is a Colombian coffee company associated with the Quindío region, one of the country's renowned coffee-producing areas. Its Cafecitas range brings Colombian coffee into a sweet biscuit that can be enjoyed alongside a cup of coffee or simply as a snack.

Stretch Your Aussie Dollar: Five Budget-Friendly Countries That Deliver Big Experiences

With the Australian dollar currently under pressure, holidaymakers are thinking twice about where they jet off to next. Luckily, great travel doesn’t have to mean great expense. International money platform WISE has crunched the numbers and revealed five destinations where your Aussie dollar goes a lot further—without sacrificing excitement, culture, or comfort. From Southeast Asia to South America, these countries offer everything from pristine beaches to historic landmarks, all at a fraction of the cost you'd expect.

1) Vietnam: Luxe Living for Less

Vietnam continues to charm Aussie travellers with its vibrant cities, tranquil countryside, and stunning coastline. But it’s not just the scenery that’s appealing—your money stretches a long way here. With one Australian dollar converting to around 16,000 Vietnamese dong, you can enjoy full-course meals, local experiences, and boutique stays without denting your bank account.

Dining out is an experience in itself, with a three-course meal for two costing just $37. Prefer street food? You’ll find delicious bowls of pho or banh mi for under $4. Local beers can be enjoyed for less than $2, making it one of the best value destinations in the region.

2) Indonesia: The Bali Bonus

Bali remains a firm favourite among Australians, not only for its lush landscapes and spiritual culture but also for its affordability. With one Aussie dollar getting you nearly 11,000 Indonesian Rupiah, your budget will go a long way whether you're enjoying beach clubs or exploring temples.

A delicious sit-down dinner for two comes in at about $30, and cheap eats start from as little as $5. Beers are around $4, and while imported alcohol is pricier, overall costs are still low enough to keep your holiday spending light.

3) Thailand: Paradise Without the Price Tag

From bustling Bangkok to the tranquil beaches of Phuket and Krabi, Thailand offers a little bit of everything. And thanks to a favourable exchange rate—one dollar equals around 21 Thai Baht—your travel dollars work harder.

A basic local dinner costs roughly $5.20, while a meal at an upscale restaurant will set you back around $46 for two. With countless accommodation options and cultural attractions at a low cost, Thailand remains one of the most affordable tropical escapes.

4) Turkiye: East Meets West in Affordable Style

Turkiye may be a long flight away, but its value makes it well worth the journey. The Turkish Lira’s recent drop in value means more spending power for Australian travellers. With one Aussie dollar buying about 23.75 liras, you’ll be surprised how far your budget can stretch.

You can enjoy a tasty local meal in Istanbul for as little as $17, while a more refined dining experience for two will average around $80. Turkiye also delivers unforgettable experiences, from ancient ruins to hot air ballooning over Cappadocia, without the high price tag.

5) Colombia: Culture and Colour on a Budget

Colombia is ideal for adventurous travellers looking for vibrant culture, historical cities, and natural beauty—all at affordable prices. One Australian dollar gets you approximately 2,630 Colombian pesos, allowing you to travel, eat, and stay in style without breaking the bank.

Street food and casual dining options abound, with meals costing around $10. Even in upscale settings, a dinner for two comes in at about $45. Local beers are under $3, leaving more room in the budget to explore Bogotá, Medellín, or the Caribbean coast.

Travel Smart, Spend Less

Whether you're seeking cultural discovery, culinary delights, or beachside relaxation, these five countries prove you don’t need a huge budget to have a rewarding travel experience. With strong exchange rates and low daily costs, each destination offers incredible value—perfect for Aussies looking to maximise their next overseas adventure.

Colombia’s first butterfly guide

Scientists in the second most-biodiverse country in the world, have documented Colombia’s 200+ species of endemic butterflies for the first time.

Columbia is home to a fifth of the world’s entire butterfly population?

The initiative has been achieved with the support of ProColombia and the Natural History Museum.

The female-led team has been working on the project since 2018, with Dr Blanca Huertas, Yenny Correa Carmona (and Jean Francois Le Crom originally seeking to produce a list of the most vulnerable butterfly species in Colombia, before expanding the project to endemic butterflies.

This guide will be made freely available, with the hope that it will form the basis for a range of, environmentally-conscious, butterfly experiences within the Colombia.

The 240-page guide will include images of museum and live specimens, maps and facts for all of the almost 200 butterflies that live exclusively in Colombia.

Booking.com Reveals the Inspiring Destinations Behind the Year's Most Nominated Movies

Hasan Zawaideh Camp
The 94th Academy Awards have announced some of the filmmaking industry’s highest honors. We now know which movies, actors, directors and creatives have received this year’s prestigious awards.

This year’s films are also an incredible source of travel inspiration. From sleepy villages and bustling urban cityscapes to otherworldly desert locales, these beautiful backdrops will be fueling fans’ wanderlust to visit these stunning places in real life. In fact, according to Booking.com research, almost 4 in 10 travellers (33%)* intend to travel to a destination that was featured in a TV show or movie they like.

If the movies aren’t enough to get you out experiencing the world once again, Booking.com has shared six destinations taking the spotlight in this year's most nominated movies to further celebrate this year’s awards season.

1. Dunedin, New Zealand
One of the favorites to be crowned as this year’s best picture is a Western psychological drama set in the rugged US state of Montana in the 1920s. To authentically evoke the look and feel of the American West from the early 20th century, the film was actually mostly shot across rural Otago in New Zealand. Dunedin, also known as the ‘Edinburgh of the South’, is Otago’s capital city and is known both for its Scottish and Maori heritage. Movie goers can catch a glimpse of the city in the film as well, with several scenes being shot here.

Where to stay: Larnach Lodge & Stable Stay

2. Belfast, United Kingdom
Following the life of a working class family and their young son's childhood during the tumult of the late 1960s in the Northern Ireland capital, this semi-autobiographical, black-and-white, movie is nominated for multiple awards this year. While Belfast may have had a troubled past, the city has pulled off a remarkable transformation into a contemporary, lively capital. The city offers a broad selection of restaurants, exciting nightlife, and rich cultural heritage with historic landmarks such as the Belfast Cathedral. Belfast is also the birthplace of the world's most infamous ship, the Titanic, which struck an iceberg and sank in 1912.

Where to stay: The Merchant Hotel

3. Wadi Rum, Jordan
The science fiction epic about a gifted young man who must travel to the most dangerous place in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people, takes place on a desert planet with sandy landscapes and amazing rock formations. The real-life desert of Wadi Rum in Jordan, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, provided the ideal filming location, with rugged otherworldly beauty in spades. To explore its famous red rocks and magnificent landscapes, travellers can go hiking, rock climbing or even ride a camel. They can also join a Wadi Rum Jeep Tour that will bring them to some of the most popular sites in the desert.

Where to stay: Hasan Zawaideh Camp

4. Hiroshima, Japan
The Japanese drama about an aging, widowed actor who gets the opportunity to direct a theatre production in Hiroshima is set and shot in this modern city in the southwest of Japan. While the city was tragically destroyed at the end of the Second World war, Hiroshima has blossomed into a vibrant, modern metropolis, while managing to retain its traditional Japanese spirit and charm. After visiting the city’s museums and monuments to soak up its history and culture, including the famous Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, visitors can indulge in some of the most delicious cuisine Japan has to offer. A treat for the taste buds, the all-inclusive Food and Culture Tour in the Night will give foodies the opportunity to discover the city’s unique culture through its cuisine, including grilled delicacies, fresh seafood and tempura.

Where to stay: The Knot Hiroshima

5. Spetses, Greece
The real-life holiday destination featured in the psychological drama about a professor on holiday who becomes fascinated by a young mother staying nearby is certainly one that will make your travel dreams come true. With the ocean sparkling in the sunlight and lush green trees paving the pathway down to the beach, the movie was filmed on the Greek island of Spetses. Just two hours away by ferry from Athens, the island is all about relaxation and is home to many beautiful beaches. Its picturesque main town, with Venetian mansions scattered throughout, stands out for its architecture and elegance.

Where to stay: Armata Boutique Hotel

6. Barichara, Colombia
The popular animated musical fantasy about an extraordinary family, hidden away in a charmed place in the mountains of Colombia, was inspired by the country’s warm and welcoming beauty. The village from the movie is a mirror-image of Barichara, a perfectly preserved 18th-century hilltown in the Santander province. This picturesque town will make you feel transported back in time, with its cobblestone streets and whitewashed adobe homes with traditional red-tile roofs and wooden doors, not to mention all the historical buildings and churches dotted throughout the city.
