The buffet selection was extensive, fresh and beautifully presented, offering an impressive range of choices that catered to virtually every taste and dietary preference. One thoughtful touch I particularly enjoyed was the unique offering brought to my table each morning by the attentive staff. On one morning, this included a delicious freshly prepared smoothie, adding a personalised and memorable element to the breakfast experience.

I enjoyed the excellent selection of fruit juices, cereals and yoghurts, along with the wide assortment of breads available for toasting, complemented by numerous spreads and toppings.

I also appreciated how promptly the staff removed used plates from my table, allowing me to comfortably wander back to the buffet and return with fresh selections without my table becoming cluttered. Inspired by the historic Silvester Brothers, respected meat merchants who operated nearby for decades, the restaurant honours a longstanding tradition of quality produce and fine ingredients.

The menu is thoughtfully structured across small plates, starters, mains, sides and desserts, allowing diners to tailor the experience to appetite and occasion.

For my main course, I selected the Atlantic Salmon with Salmoriglio, while my dining companion chose the Wagyu Rump with Red Wine Jus. Both dishes were beautifully presented and accompanied by fresh salad and crisp shoestring fries. The salmon was perfectly cooked, moist and delicate, enhanced by the vibrant Mediterranean flavours of the Salmoriglio, while the Wagyu delivered exactly what one hopes for from a premium steak dish — tender, rich, flavoursome and deeply satisfying. The generous portion sizes and quality ingredients further reinforced Silvester’s commitment to refined modern Australian dining.

We accompanied the meal with a pale ale and ginger beer before finishing by sharing the Chocolate Hazelnut Mille-Feuille “Reimagined” with raspberry and beetroot ice cream — a memorable, beautifully executed and indulgently satisfying dessert that provided the perfect sweet conclusion to our dining experience.

One detail I particularly valued was the restaurant’s efficient and attentive service. With theatre tickets awaiting us, we requested prompt timing, and the team managed this perfectly without the meal feeling rushed or compromising the relaxed atmosphere of the evening.

The cappuccino was consistently well made, rounding out a breakfast experience that felt both indulgent and thoughtfully curated.

It was the perfect way to start the day, especially with the relaxed atmosphere and attentive service adding to the overall experience. Whether you are fuelling up for a day of sightseeing or easing into a slower morning, this is a breakfast that truly delivers.

Right in the heart of the city, it felt like I had discovered a peaceful oasis within the urban buzz. The moment I stepped through its doors, I was struck by the perfect balance of heritage charm and contemporary design.

My first impression was one of understated elegance. The soft lighting, polished timber, and art deco-inspired touches immediately made me feel at home. There’s a refined warmth in the way the hotel has preserved its architectural character while embracing a modern, welcoming style. Every corner of the lobby and shared spaces felt thoughtfully curated — a seamless blend of past and present that never felt forced or overly designed, but rather, genuinely inviting.

What really stood out during my stay was the strong sense of history throughout the building. Originally the MLC Building, it dates back to the 1950s and still holds on to many of its original features. From the detailed cornices to the overall design, it was clear that the building’s character had been carefully preserved. Rather than stripping the building of its identity, the renovation embraced it—blending original design elements with modern touches like updated furnishings, lighting, and well-planned room layouts. It doesn’t feel overly polished or too modern—it feels balanced. Staying here gave me more than just a convenient place to sleep; it offered a connection to Auckland’s architectural past, which added a unique layer to the experience.

The Classic Studios caught my eye with their cozy simplicity—compact spaces that still felt thoughtfully designed for a restful stay. Moving up, the Signature Studios stood out for their bright city views and that extra layer of calm thanks to double glazing, making them feel like a peaceful urban hideaway.

The Premier Studio Suites offered noticeably more room to stretch out, with inviting living areas that suggested longer, more leisurely stays. The Junior Suites impressed me with their clever division of space—a separate bedroom and lounge area that created a sense of home away from home. I also appreciated how accessible the Premier Accessible rooms were designed, proving that style and practicality go hand in hand here. Walking through these spaces, it was clear the hotel knows how to balance the historic charm of its art deco roots with the needs of today’s travellers.

The ensuite bathroom added a further layer of comfort, with modern fixtures, a generous shower, and premium amenities that made it feel like a private retreat.

I ended up dining at the Trocadero Restaurant & Bar more often than expected—partly out of convenience, but mainly because the food was outstanding. Named after the former Auckland entertainment venue, the Trocadero Dine and Dance, which once occupied the same site, the restaurant blends history with a modern, relaxed elegance.

Breakfast quickly became a daily highlight. Rather than a buffet, a thoughtfully curated menu offered freshly prepared, beautifully presented dishes made to order—each one feeling both indulgent and nourishing, and the perfect way to start the day.

Eggs Benedict

Some mornings, I couldn’t resist the Legacy Breakfast: eggs cooked to my preference (fried, poached, or scrambled), served with sausage, bacon, hash browns, slow-cooked tomato, mushrooms, and sourdough toast. On other days, I opted for the Eggs Benedict—topped with my choice of bacon, salmon, or mushroom—served on an English muffin with Hollandaise, wilted spinach, mixed greens, and cherry tomatoes. When I was in the mood for something lighter and wholesome, the porridge was a satisfying choice—creamy oats topped with rhubarb, muscovado sugar, and a mix of fresh fruits and berries.

Each morning, I enjoyed a freshly made barista cappuccino alongside my breakfast—always a highlight. The rich crema, velvety froth, and delicate latte art on top made every cup feel like a small indulgence. It was the perfect companion to the beautifully prepared dishes, adding a comforting and flavorful start to the day.

In the evenings, I often returned for a glass of wine and a relaxed dinner. The grilled chicken breast, prawn risotto, and beef scotch were standout choices—rich in flavor and expertly prepared. The desserts—crème brûlée, affogato, and Duck Island ice cream—were the perfect finale to each meal, offering just the right balance of indulgence and satisfaction. The atmosphere was stylish yet unpretentious, and service was always warm and unhurried.

While the hotel has a boutique feel, it doesn’t lack in facilities. There’s a compact fitness centre, useful meeting spaces, and a concierge team that made everything seamless. Whether I needed directions, local tips, or transport help, they were always warm and efficient—just the kind of service I appreciated after long days of sightseeing. For added convenience, the hotel also offers a coin-operated laundry—ideal for staying fresh during longer trips without the hassle of finding a laundromat.

The location couldn’t have been more convenient. Positioned right on Queen Street, the hotel put me at the very heart of Auckland’s bustling city life. Just a short stroll away, I found myself at Aotea Square, a vibrant hub often hosting markets, performances, and community events. When I stayed, an ice skating rink was set up in the Square. The iconic Civic Theatre was also within easy walking distance, offering a beautiful glimpse into Auckland’s cultural scene with its stunning architecture and regular shows. Surrounding the hotel were countless dining options—from casual cafés perfect for a quick coffee to upscale restaurants serving diverse international cuisines. Boutique shops and larger retailers lined the street, making it effortless to browse or grab last-minute essentials. Whether I had just an hour to spare or a whole afternoon to wander, everything I wanted to experience in the city was close by, which made exploring stress-free and enjoyable.

The QT experience began the moment I stepped into the lobby. Inspired by the textures and tones of the sea, the interiors burst with creative flair. Think oyster shell motifs embedded into the carpet, sculptural lighting that twists like waves above your head, and quirky art pieces that add charm and personality to every corner. The check-in process was swift and warm, with friendly staff who struck the perfect balance between professional and relaxed.

What struck me most was the atmosphere—this wasn’t a typical hotel lobby. It was a gallery-like space, brimming with creativity, alive with energy, textures, and visual storytelling. The lighting was soft yet dramatic, casting playful shadows across the space, while the seating areas were both stylish and inviting, perfectly balancing comfort and design. The overall effect was both theatrical and welcoming, creating an environment that felt effortlessly chic yet accessible. I felt instantly at ease, drawn into the space’s unique charm, and entirely intrigued by what lay beyond the lift doors, as if a whole new world awaited just around the corner.

Lavish textures, soothing warm tones, and bold design details blend seamlessly to create a striking yet inviting atmosphere, making it a true visual and sensory retreat where every corner exudes comfort and style.

What truly stood out for me, though, was the bathtub positioned in the main room behind the bed. After a long day at the conference, soaking in that tub was an unexpected highlight. It added a luxurious, spa-like element that transformed a standard business trip into a moment of indulgence.

I especially enjoyed the supplied anihana Blue Ocean bath bomb and the peppermint and lime Muscle Soak Bath Salts—both added the perfect finishing touch to a well-earned unwind.

A Mediterranean Journey at Esther

Dining at Esther was a highlight in itself. Though often seen as a breakfast spot, Esther is far more than that, offering a refined yet approachable dining experience throughout the day. With its warm and inviting ambiance, the restaurant seamlessly transitions from morning light to evening glow, providing the perfect setting for any meal. The full lunch and dinner menu features an exquisite range of dishes, each rooted in the vibrant, sun-soaked flavours of the Mediterranean coastline. Fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, from seafood to seasonal produce, are thoughtfully combined to capture the true essence of the region, with each plate telling its own story of bold flavours, aromatic herbs, and rich textures. It’s not just a meal, it’s an experience—one that transports you to the heart of the Mediterranean with every bite.

I began my culinary journey with dinner: a beautifully balanced pasta dish of linguine, delicately infused with the vibrant golden hue of Te Anau saffron, and brightened by the zesty punch of fresh lemon. Topped with a generous sprinkling of Parmigiano, the dish was rich, fragrant, and deeply satisfying. Each bite was a harmonious blend of bold citrus, the earthy warmth of the aromatic saffron, and the indulgent, silky creaminess of the cheese, creating a symphony of flavors that lingered long after the last forkful. The pasta itself was perfectly cooked, tender yet with just the right bite, making for a truly memorable start to the evening

My one-pan brekkie

The next morning’s one-pan brekkie didn’t disappoint either. Served up with care, it featured two perfectly cooked wood-fired hens’ eggs, their yolks golden and runny, paired with crispy, free-range streaky bacon that had just the right amount of smoky crispness. Accompanying this was Burton and Baz’s rich, spicy chorizo sausage, bursting with robust flavour, alongside roasted Spanish tomatoes that were sweet, juicy, and slightly charred, adding a subtle depth. All of this was perfectly complemented by slices of warm, toasted sourdough—crispy on the outside, soft and airy on the inside. Hearty, rustic, and brimming with flavour, it was the kind of breakfast that not only satisfied but left you eagerly anticipating the next bite.

One afternoon, I opted for a comforting lunch from the Esther Bar: a pizzetta topped with confit garlic, rosemary, ricotta, honey, and pine nuts—crispy and indulgent—paired with a fragrant free-range chicken soup enriched with saffron, couscous, and green vegetables. Simple, satisfying, and elegantly presented.

Esther invites guests on a journey—a coastal stroll along the French Riviera, a sun-drenched lunch in Sicily, or a spice-laden detour through Morocco. The menu reflects the warmth and diversity of these regions, brought to life using New Zealand’s finest produce and seafood.

Inspired by his own travels, the Chef, Sean Connolly, brings tradition and innovation together. His dishes are built on honest simplicity, elevated with bold flavour and a touch of theatrical flair. Seafood, often caught daily, plays a central role—showcased with respect for both seasonality and sustainability.

The restaurant’s open, country-style kitchen adds a welcoming, homely feel to the experience. Watching the chefs work with precision and passion gives guests a real connection to the food they’re about to enjoy.

The vibe was upbeat but laid-back, the music carefully curated, and the cocktails expertly crafted. Whether you're a fan of classic mixes or adventurous infusions, the bar staff delivered with flair. With the golden hour casting a warm glow over the marina, it was easy to lose track of time in this sky-high sanctuary.

Whether it was housekeeping checking if I needed anything extra, or restaurant staff remembering my coffee order in the mornings, those small gestures added up to an experience that felt personal and tailored. The team seemed to take real pride in what they do, infusing a bit of creativity and charm into every moment. It’s that rare kind of hospitality that makes a place memorable long after checkout.
