Slow travel, sustainability and technology highlighted as future global tourism trends

Travel & tourism experts from across the industry convened at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2024 Future Stage to discuss the complexities of navigating the transformation of hospitality.

Slow travel, a movement that encompasses sustainable travel, mindful travel, and low-impact travel, sustainable practices and the use of AI and data to enhance the travel experience emerged as key actionable strategies for futureproofing travel and hospitality businesses in the Middle East region.

The opening session entitled Trends Shaping the Future of Hospitality in the Middle East, brought together senior representatives from IHG Hotels and Resorts, Marriot International, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Banyan Tree Dubai, Mastercard and Silkhaus. The diverse panel provided a broad perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing today's hospitality industry.

Haitham Mattar, Managing Director, Middle East, Africa and South West Asia, IHG Hotels & Resorts, initiated the hospitality trends session with an insightful discussion on the dynamic transformation within the hospitality landscape.

Addressing a packed venue of trade professionals, Mattar highlighted the importance of how destinations and hotels identify their respective source markets: “The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way generations choose travel, with outdoor adventure now taking the No. 1 spot away from “beach, sun and sand”. For the industry to stay afloat in difficult times, the private sector needs to mirror the vision of their respective tourism authorities and work together to ensure appealing spending packages for those markets.”

He also outlined how generational shifts and emerging travel behaviours are giving rise to global travel trends such as slow travel and similarly, with the hospitality industry responsible for 10% of global emissions, consumers are now willing to spend up to 31% more on hospitality companies that execute sustainable practices.

Lastly, he highlighted how innovation in the hospitality industry is triggering the pace of digitalisation. "The future use of technology and AI will be critical for us to get a clear idea of how to enhance consumer preferences. Specifically, travel anxiety is starting to reduce with technology, and the focus should now be firmly on the traveller's experiences," he added.

Also speaking about the transforming needs of the market, Sandeep Walia, Chief Operating Officer, Middle East - Marriott International, echoed Mattar’s sentiments as he highlighted slow holidays, sustainability, the rise of AI and dupe destinations – similar to traditional holiday destinations but closer in geography – as some of the key travel trends for the next three years, according to the “Marriott Bonvoy Travel Trends report 2024 and beyond’.

“The insights shared today go beyond theories to offer direct reflections of the transformations we aim to foster through ATM. As we continue to drive innovation and entrepreneurial spirit within the travel industry, sessions like these equip our attendees with the knowledge and tools necessary to lead the hospitality industry forward,” said Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market.

The 31st edition of ATM, under the theme 'Empowering Innovation: Transforming Travel Through Entrepreneurship,' also hosted the fascinating Global Stage Welcome: The Gateway to Global Insights session, outlining Dubai's key tourism objectives for the coming years.

Elsewhere today, the Market Insights Summit also took centre stage, exploring the potential of developing markets such as China, India and Latin America as they emerge as key players in global tourism.

Held in conjunction with Dubai World Trade Centre, ATM 2024’s strategic partners include the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), Destination Partner; Emirates, Official Airline Partner; IHG Hotels & Resorts, Official Hotel Partner and Al Rais Travel, Official DMC Partner.

ATM 2024 concluded on Thursday, 9 May, at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC

Water-Splashing Festival: Fusion of tradition and tourism ignites cultural excitement

Local residents and tourists on April 14, 2024 Photo: VCG
The Water-Splashing Festival in Southwest China's Yunnan Province, a traditional celebration, has gained widespread attention after videos of participants joyfully splashing water at each other and playfully "attacking" others with their sandals went viral on social media.

Amid the laughter and joy of this festival, many participants "lost" their sandals in the chaos, some even hilariously ended up wearing them as ankle "bracelets." These scenes not only bring joy but also illustrate the festival's unique interactive nature. Netizens have flooded social media with comments, with the hashtag "Those who can bring sandals home are impressive" becoming a trending topic as people shared various amusing moments and stories.

This is a traditional festival for the Dai people in the Dehong area of Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province. Part of the Dai New Year, it is a festival to send off the old and greet the new. Lasting for three or four days, it is held during the sixth month of the Dai calendar, usually falling in mid-April of the Gregorian calendar. The Water Splashing Festival is also known as the Festival for Bathing the Buddha. It is also one of the first events to become a national intangible cultural heritage in China.

During the festival, people of all ages dress in festive attire, while women carry clean water to wash Buddha statues and seek blessings. After the "bathing of the Buddha," people begin to splash water at each other, expressing blessings and hopes to wash away diseases and disaster and usher in a life of happiness and prosperity.

The Water-Splashing Festival in Yunnan Province is generally divided into "civil splashing" and "martial splashing," with the former using branches dipped in water for more controlled splashing, while the latter involves unrestrained splashing, drenching everyone among laughter and joy. People use various containers to hold water, flooding the streets and alleys, chasing and playing with each other, splashing water at anyone they meet.

As night falls, the sound of drums and music fills the villages, and people revel in singing and dancing. Throughout the festival, in addition to traditional entertainment activities such as dragon boat races, releasing sky lanterns, water splashing, and throwing bags, there are also new activities such as releasing balloons and park carnivals.

It is said that during the festival, the more water one is splashed with, the more blessings they receive. This year's Water-Splashing Festival has attracted attention as some celebrities have been participating in various water splashing events across Yunnan Province.

Media has reported that Taiwan singer Kenji Wu was seen fleeing after being heavily splashed during the festival in Xishuangbanna. Former member of South Korean-Chinese boy band EXO Huang Zitao was also drenched and "begged for mercy" during the water splashing festival in Yunnan Province's Mangshi.

As Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, and other countries also celebrate the Water-Splashing Festival, Yunnan's festival also attracts tourists from neighboring countries.

For example, during the opening ceremony of the Water-Splashing Festival in Mangshi on Friday, the peak number of people in a central square exceeded 80,000, with people from China and Myanmar joining in the water splashing festivities together, turning the scene into an ocean of joy.

This phenomenon not only reflects the festive atmosphere of the festival but also demonstrates people's love and enthusiasm for the traditional event.

During this festival, people let go of their inhibitions, expressing their best wishes and joy through water splashing and interactive games, enhancing friendship and understanding. The integration of this traditional festival with tourism is worth promoting to further advance the development of cultural tourism.

At U.S. Travel's IPW, Leaders Say Government Must Increase Focus to Achieve Travel Growth

Geoff Freeman
At U.S. Travel's IPW – the largest generator of international inbound travel to the United States – Association President and CEO Geoff Freeman shared a vision to make travel a national priority, solve barriers to visitation growth, and become the most-visited nation in the world.

“It should be our national goal to be nothing short of number one in terms of visitor arrivals, visitor spend and visitor experience,” Freeman said. “But our ambitions are constrained by excessively long wait times for visitor visas, often-lengthy waits at customs, and an air traffic control system that is challenged to meet demand. Achieving travel growth will require a sustained focus by government and industry to address frictions and improve the process for travelers.”

The 55th annual IPW is being held May 3-7 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. IPW drives more than $5.5 billion in economic impact in future travel to the U.S.

A decade of opportunity for the United States

Freeman pointed to a decade of opportunity ahead as the United States prepares to welcome millions of new travelers to major events in destinations nationwide, such as Copa America this summer, the FIFA World Cup games and America's 250th celebration in 2026, and the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028, among others that will attract leisure and business travelers.

At U.S. Travel's IPW press conference, Freeman was joined by a panel of the Commission on Seamless and Secure Travel, including co-chair Kevin McAleenan, former Acting Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and Patty Cogswell, former Deputy Administrator of the Transportation Security Administration. They participated in a conversation focused on creating a more efficient, secure and modern travel system for the U.S. The commission—comprised of former government officials and private sector experts—is tasked with making policy recommendations to modernize the travel experience, increase U.S. travel competitiveness and facilitate growth.

Freeman told media, “IPW is back,” citing attendance this year of approximately 5,700 attendees from nearly 70 countries. IPW convenes U.S. travel suppliers with international tour operators and buyers for 100,000 scheduled business appointments over three days. This year's IPW saw a 20% increase in attendance over 2023's event, an indication of travel's continuing recovery. However, total inbound visitation to the U.S. remained at just 84% recovered (at the end of 2023) of 2019 levels, so much work remains ahead to build arrivals and increase market share.

Brand USA returned as premier sponsor of IPW. American Express is the official card of the U.S. Travel Association.

The 56th IPW will be held in Chicago from June 14-18, 2025.

Arabian Travel Market 2024 sees 15% year-on-year growth, setting a new show record with more than 46,000 attendees across four days

More than 46,000 industry professionals from over 160 countries – including 33,500 visitors – attended the 31st edition of Arabian Travel Market (ATM) in Dubai, UAE.

This represents a 15% year-on-year increase in attendees compared to ATM’s landmark 30th edition, setting a new record for the show and demonstrating the strength, resilience and momentum of the global travel and tourism sector.

In line with ATM 2024’s theme, ‘Empowering Innovation: Transforming Travel Through Entrepreneurship’, over 2,600 exhibitors gathered at Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) to explore the drivers behind industry growth and identify future opportunities within the global tourism sector.

Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market, said: “My colleagues and I are delighted that so many industry professionals from around the world were able to join us in Dubai to explore how innovation and entrepreneurship are shaping a more efficient, profitable and sustainable tourism sector for future generations. We are thrilled

to have set a new show record, underscoring our position as the travel and tourism exhibition of choice as we continue to drive global growth within the industry.”

ATM 2024 welcomed His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, who chaired a meeting of The Executive Council during the show. H.H. Sheikh Hamdan approved a series of major transport and tourism-related projects in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

This year’s opening session saw policymakers from across the region explain how Gulf nations are working together to streamline the GCC’s tourism offering. The panel discussion, which took place following opening remarks from H.E. Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy, featured insights from H.E. Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority; H.E. Fahd Hamidaddin, CEO of the Saudi Tourism Authority; H.E. Azzan Al Busaidi, Undersecretary of Tourism at the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism in Oman; and H.E. Sarah Buhijji, CEO of the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority.

Panellists outlined predictions for the future of air travel and the importance of innovation in enabling the industry to accommodate the significant growth in air traffic during the session ‘Looking Skyward for Innovation: How Technology is Disrupting Aviation’. Moderated by travel expert Mark Frary, the session featured insights from Cirium, IATA, AviationXLab and Riyadh Air.

InterLnkd overcame stiff competition to win the third ATM Start-up Pitch Battle, which was held in association with Intelak. The UK-headquartered company uses specific data points and an intelligent matching engine to link the travel and hospitality sectors with the fashion, beauty and retail industries.

Experience Abu Dhabi secured the Best Stand Design Award (over 150m2) at ATM 2024. An independent panel of judges praised the tourism authority’s exhibition space for its flowing design, innovative use of greenery and excellent visibility from the show floor.

Other Best Stand Winners included AlUla, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, ExploreTECH, flydubai, Qiddiya Investment Company and Saudi Tourism Authority.

Held in conjunction with Dubai World Trade Centre, ATM 2024’s strategic partners included Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) as Destination Partner, Emirates as Official Airline Partner, IHG Hotels & Resorts as Official Hotel Partner, and Al Rais Travel as Official DMC Partner.

Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2025 will take place from 28 April to 1 May.

SNEAK PEEK: Novotel & ibis Styles Melbourne Airport prepares for take off

Higher State
With anticipation building for the launch of Victoria's largest and most significant hotel development this year, the dual-branded Novotel & ibis Styles Melbourne Airport is getting ready to officially start checking-in guests from 1 July 2024.

Set to be the first new-build internationally branded hotel to open at Melbourne Airport in over two decades, Novotel and ibis Styles Melbourne Airport will offer travellers all the luxuries and amenities of a city hotel within easy walking distance of Terminal 4.

A significant coup for the economy and travellers in and out of Melbourne, the $230 million hotel development designed by FK Architect with interiors by Woods Bagot, boasts 464 stylishly designed guest rooms split across Novotel (248 rooms) and ibis Styles (216 rooms) located within The Hive precinct.

Inspired by the beauty of regional Victoria, Novotel Melbourne Airport delivers a sense of space and openness through a natural palette that creates a relaxing sanctuary, while ibis Styles Melbourne Airport depicts the urban grain of Melbourne with a uniquely personalised and playfully fun aesthetic.

Capitalising on Melbourne's reputation as the culinary capital of Australia, travellers will be able to experience three venues including Small Holdings Cafe, for coffee and pastries, Boccata Restaurant and Wine Bar for more substantial Italian fare and Amber State Taphouse & Kitchen, a modern gastro-pub.

Guests at both properties, as well as transient travellers, can take advantage of access to Higher State, Melbourne's first airport health and wellbeing club that provides the ultimate sanctuary for travellers to reawaken the senses and revitalise the body. The one-of-a-kind club features an indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, massage and fitness centre and is conveniently situated for weary travellers in need of some self-care after a long flight.

As part of The Hive precinct at Melbourne Airport, Novotel and ibis Styles Melbourne Airport also provide business travellers with access to three conference and events spaces including a ballroom for up to 330 guests as well as The Aerofoil, an ultra-modern hotel-serviced co-working space spread across two floors.

Accor Pacific Chief Operating Officer PM&E, Adrian Williams, said “As the countdown begins to the launch of Novotel and ibis Styles Melbourne Airport, we're thrilled to be working with Melbourne Airport to deliver the first internationally branded hotels to open at the airport in more than 20 years.

"Not only will the new-build hotels provide more choice for travellers seeking a place to stay, they will also offer a welcoming hub for the workers in the airport precinct. Having just been voted the best airport in Australia and the Pacific, it's only fitting that Melbourne Airport will now be able to meet the increasing demand for more hotel rooms and have greater choice.

“These landmark hotel openings complement and expand upon Accor's extensive experience with operating airport hotels in key gateway cities across the Pacific region, including Sydney, Brisbane, Darwin, Auckland and Christchurch,” he concluded.

Stuart Verrier, Melbourne Airport's Head of Property Development and Asset Development, said “We're excited to bring these new hotels to Melbourne Airport and give more choice to travellers and airport workers alike.

“Melbourne is now Australia's largest city, and these hotels are essential for the growing number of people visiting our city, many of whom need a night before or after a long flight. But more than that, they also offer dining, wellness, conference and co-working facilities that provide a reason to come out to Melbourne Airport - even if you're not flying.”

David Alexander, General Manager, Novotel & ibis Styles Melbourne Airport said “As Victoria's gateway to the world, Melbourne Airport provides the perfect hub for travellers so we're thrilled to be opening the first new-build internationally branded hotels at the airport in 20 years.

“Given that passenger numbers will only continue to increase over the coming years, these properties are a much-needed addition to Melbourne's tourism industry and are set to bring huge economic and social benefits not only to Melbourne, but also to the state of Victoria,” he commented.

Located in the City of Hume, Novotel and ibis Styles Melbourne Airport not only offers easy access to Melbourne Airport but is also close to local attractions including URBNSurf, Essendon Football Club, Melbourne Airport Golf Club and the Sunbury wine region. The hotel is working on building out substantial partnership programs with these local attractions, which will add an exciting layer of experience to guests of both hotels.
