A Grand Kickoff at Eden Park: MEETINGS 2025 Begins in Style

MEETINGS 2025
New Zealand’s biggest business events trade show, MEETINGS 2025, launched in unforgettable fashion on Tuesday 10 June 2025 with an opening celebration at Auckland’s legendary Eden Park. Over 750 industry professionals walked the red carpet to the nation’s most iconic stadium for a night that blended culture, sport, and business under the lights of a venue steeped in history.

The evening was more than a welcome party. It was a statement of intent—New Zealand is ready to lead on the global stage when it comes to business events.

Government Backs the Sector with Major Investment

The night’s momentum was amplified by a major announcement from Tourism and Hospitality Minister Hon Louise Upston, who revealed an additional $3 million investment into Tourism New Zealand’s Conference Assistance Programme. The new funding will further attract international conferences to New Zealand over the next year.

Minister Upston praised the MEETINGS showcase as an example of the high-value impact of business events on the nation’s economy, infrastructure, and regional tourism. She underscored the importance of these events in supporting year-round visitation and developing the visitor economy.

Auckland’s Unique Culture on Full Display

Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown officially welcomed delegates to Tāmaki Makaurau, the world’s largest Polynesian city, highlighting the rich cultural heritage and significant urban development shaping the city’s future. He was joined by BEIA Chair Martin Snedden and CEO Lisa Hopkins, who spoke from the heart about the historic venue.

Hopkins described Eden Park as a place that embodies legacy and pride, noting her vision for MEETINGS to be a catalyst for long-term connections and business opportunities.

“This event was not just an opening,” Hopkins said. “It was a celebration of what we stand for—world-class capability, cultural depth, and the people who bring events to life in New Zealand.”

A Night of Lights, Legends and Local Hospitality

MEETINGS 2025
Guests were treated to a laser and light show courtesy of Switch It Up, a musical performance by Better Band, and an immersive walk of fame through Eden Park’s storied past. Memorabilia displays and a meet-and-greet with All Blacks legends Josh Kronfeld and Ian Jones added a sporting touch to the evening.

The event was co-produced with the support of Vidcom, Auckland Convention Bureau, and the Eden Park team, offering a shining example of New Zealand’s ability to host international-standard gatherings with flair.

Looking Ahead to Two Days of Connection

With the two-day trade exhibition officially beginning on 11 June at Auckland Showgrounds, over 550 domestic and international buyers are set to connect with 215 exhibitors across 255 stands representing 18 regions.

Lisa Hopkins emphasised that the true impact of MEETINGS 2025 will stretch beyond the event itself.

“It’s about building future opportunities, growing our industry talent, and leaving a lasting impression on those who come here to connect,” she said.

Why Becoming an AIPC Member is a Smart Move for Convention Centre Professionals

AIPC Members
For professionals in the convention and exhibition centre industry, joining the International Association of Conference Centres (AIPC) opens doors to an exclusive global community of like-minded individuals and organizations. AIPC membership offers unmatched opportunities for professional development, networking, and access to industry-leading resources, all designed to help members stay ahead in a competitive and ever-evolving marketplace.

One of the primary benefits of AIPC membership is the ability to connect with over 900 management-level professionals from 180 leading centres in 57 countries. This global network allows members to share knowledge, experiences, and best practices with industry peers, creating a platform for collaboration and growth. By becoming a part of the AIPC community, members gain access to a wealth of insights and expertise from some of the most influential figures in the meetings and events industry.

AIPC also offers its members exclusive access to a range of educational programs designed to help them improve their skills and stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends. The AIPC Academy, an annual residential professional development program, is one such opportunity. It provides centre managers with the tools and knowledge they need to excel in their roles, while also introducing newcomers to the inner workings of the industry. This program is widely regarded as one of the best in the business, offering an immersive learning experience with expert faculty and a focus on practical, real-world applications.

Another highlight for AIPC members is the Annual Conference, the industry's most significant event of the year. This gathering provides an invaluable opportunity for members to meet and interact with peers from around the world, gaining new insights and expanding their professional network. The conference also features high-level professional development sessions designed to address the most pressing challenges facing the industry today and in the future.

In addition to these educational opportunities, AIPC members have access to a range of resources that can help enhance their centre’s operations and demonstrate their commitment to international standards. The AIPC Quality Standards Programme, for example, is a comprehensive framework that allows members to showcase how their centres are meeting global best practices. This program provides a valuable tool for building trust with clients, owners, and the local community.

For members looking to demonstrate their economic impact, the AIPC Economic Impact Calculator tool is an invaluable resource. Developed in partnership with Ipsos, this tool enables centres to calculate and present credible, recognized estimates of their contribution to the local economy. It’s an essential tool for those looking to make a compelling case for the value their centre provides beyond just financial returns.

AIPC also offers the International Centre Benchmarking Program and the AIPC-Ipsos Client Satisfaction Survey Program, both of which provide members with vital data and insights into how their centre compares to others in the industry. These resources are essential for making data-driven decisions that can lead to improved performance and greater client satisfaction.

Members can stay informed and up-to-date with the latest industry news and trends through AIPC’s quarterly newsletter, Communiqué. This publication provides valuable insights, industry updates, and a calendar of events, as well as access to a discussion forum where members can exchange ideas and seek advice from fellow professionals.

In short, becoming an AIPC member is an investment in professional growth and industry leadership. The association’s global community, educational offerings, and extensive resources provide convention and exhibition centre professionals with the tools they need to succeed in a competitive and dynamic field. By joining AIPC, members gain access to a wealth of opportunities that will help them stay at the forefront of the industry and continue to advance their careers.

AIPC future shapers
The International Association of Conference Centres (AIPC) has launched the Future Shapers programme, an exceptional international initiative designed to empower emerging leaders in the convention centre industry. This programme offers a unique platform for talented individuals to gain the skills and insights required to lead convention centres into the future, while fostering a sense of community among industry leaders from around the globe.

The goal of the Future Shapers programme is threefold:

  1. To provide a tailor-made executive management programme aimed at developing the next generation of convention centre leaders.
  2. To offer AIPC members an opportunity to retain and foster talent within their organisations.
  3. To create lasting value for the AIPC community by generating innovative business cases that have the potential to reshape the way convention centres are managed, while offering participants the chance to build lasting connections with senior leaders globally. Participants will also become part of an exclusive alumni network after graduation.

The programme is structured around three core components:

  • Masterclasses: Participants will attend a series of seven expert-led masterclasses, each designed to deepen their knowledge and understanding of key areas in convention centre leadership and management.

  • Industry Challenge: Working in groups, participants will identify a pressing challenge facing the convention centre industry, propose a solution, and develop a detailed business case. This solution will be compiled into a white paper and published to the AIPC community.

  • Challenge Presentation: Groups will prepare a 20-minute presentation to be delivered at the prestigious AIPC Annual Conference in Shenzhen, China, from June 22-25, 2025. This presentation will outline the proposed solution to the identified industry challenge, showcasing the innovation and strategic thinking of the participants.

The selection of the winning team will be based on two main criteria: the quality of the business case and the effectiveness of the presentation. A jury composed of AIPC board members, venue CEOs, and business partner CEOs will evaluate the business case based on innovation, market and product analysis, and financial feasibility. The presentation will be judged by the vote of the AIPC Annual Conference 2025 participants.

AIPC: Strengthening Industry Partnerships to Shape the Future of Meetings and Conferences

The AIPC International Association of Conference Centres has long been at the forefront of advocating for the global meetings and events industry. With a deep commitment to supporting its members, AIPC actively participates in several key industry partnerships that ensure its voice is heard and its interests defended across various levels of the sector. Two notable platforms where AIPC plays a significant role are the Joint Meetings Industry Council (JMIC) and the Policy Forum, both of which have become essential in shaping the direction of the global meetings industry.

The Joint Meetings Industry Council (JMIC) has been a vital space for the exchange of knowledge and collaboration among meetings industry associations for over five decades. Representing 15 international organizations, JMIC works to promote the meetings industry as a significant contributor to the global economy. AIPC, as one of its founding members, plays an active part in providing a collective voice for the industry, advocating for policies that support the growth and development of conference centres and venues around the world. JMIC’s goals are focused on fostering industry-wide communication, amplifying the profile of the sector, and recognizing individuals who have advanced the professional standing of the industry.

The organization’s efforts extend far beyond internal discussions; JMIC also engages in communication with governmental and community audiences, aiming to raise awareness of the economic and social value of the meetings industry. Through this partnership, AIPC ensures that its members remain informed and that their concerns are addressed at the highest levels of policy-making. The JMIC’s network of active members includes prestigious associations such as the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), and Meeting Professionals International (MPI), among others.

The Policy Forum, launched in 2003, has become another cornerstone of AIPC’s advocacy work. Each year, it brings together around 40 policymakers and 80 industry leaders to discuss key issues affecting the global meetings landscape. Unlike traditional conferences, the Policy Forum is designed to influence policy, not merely to inform. The event is centered on five core pillars: Strategy, Advocacy, Development, Engagement, and Enlightenment. These themes are explored to highlight the wide-reaching benefits that investing in conferences and meetings can offer, from generating income and creating jobs to fostering scientific and cultural advancements.

The Forum’s ability to connect the meetings industry with policymakers has allowed it to be a major force in advancing the understanding of the sector’s value. As an important meeting point for decision-makers, the Policy Forum helps to ensure that the meetings industry’s contributions to national and regional development are recognized and supported. The event is organized under the auspices of JMIC, further cementing the strong collaboration between AIPC and other leading industry groups.

Both the JMIC and Policy Forum are examples of how AIPC is committed to creating stronger industry partnerships, ensuring that its members are positioned to succeed in a rapidly evolving market. Through these collaborations, AIPC is not only defending the interests of its members but also playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of the global meetings industry.

The summit was open to all convention centers, whether AIPC members or not, emphasizing the importance of collaboration across the industry. The agenda featured a series of thought-provoking sessions that addressed key topics relevant to the modern-day convention center.

The program kicked off with a welcome and introduction, followed by a global outlook session that set the stage for the discussions ahead. One of the standout sessions focused on the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in convention centers. Experts shared insights on how AI can add value and the best strategies for integrating this technology into day-to-day operations.

Sustainability was also a key theme, with a case study illustrating how convention centers are embracing eco-friendly practices to reduce their environmental impact. Following a networking break, the summit delved into the "war for talent," exploring how the FutureForce project is reshaping the workforce within the events and convention center sector.

A highlight of the summit was the "Big Issue Debate," where attendees examined what the “next-gen” convention center might look like, tackling topics like design, functionality, and the future of event experiences. A panel of three venue CEOs then shared their perspectives on the future of the industry, providing a C-suite view of how convention centers can thrive in an ever-changing landscape.

The day concluded with a wrap-up session followed by a networking event, offering attendees the chance to continue discussions and forge new connections in a relaxed and social setting.

The AIME-AIPC summit provided a rare opportunity for convention center professionals to come together, learn from each other, and explore innovative ways to shape the future of the industry. It was an event that reinforced the value of collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and forward-thinking within the global convention center community.
