Europe's Best Calmcations for 2026: Discover the Most Stress-Free Destinations for a Relaxing Escape

Tallinn, Estonia
As modern life becomes increasingly fast-paced, travellers are looking for holidays that offer more than sightseeing. They want peace, quiet and genuine opportunities to recharge. The latest travel trend for 2026 is the rise of the "calmcation" – holidays focused on relaxation, wellbeing and escaping the pressures of everyday life.

With one in six people reporting they feel stressed every day, and 76 per cent of travellers saying stress reduction is now their primary reason for taking a holiday, Europe's quieter cities are emerging as some of the world's most desirable destinations.

A comprehensive study by Vape and Go analysed almost 70 European cities, examining factors including walkability, green space, air quality, crime rates and noise pollution to identify the continent's most stress-free destinations.

The results reveal a fascinating collection of cities where tranquillity takes centre stage.

Why Calmcations Are the Biggest Travel Trend of 2026

Trondheim, Norway
Unlike traditional city breaks packed with busy sightseeing schedules, calmcations encourage travellers to slow down and reconnect with nature, local culture and themselves.

Instead of rushing between attractions, visitors spend time strolling through leafy parks, enjoying quiet waterfronts, relaxing in cafés, discovering local history and embracing a slower pace of life.

Many of Europe's smaller cities are perfectly suited to this style of travel, offering beautiful architecture, excellent public spaces and welcoming communities without the crowds found in many major capitals.

Tallinn, Estonia Tops Europe's Most Relaxing Destinations

Leading the rankings is Estonia's charming capital, Tallinn, with an impressive stress-free score of 92.8 out of 100.

Tallinn's beautifully preserved medieval Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers visitors cobbled streets, historic churches, boutique cafés and centuries of fascinating history within an exceptionally peaceful environment.

One of the city's biggest advantages is its remarkably low noise levels. Less than one per cent of residents experience significant road or rail noise during the night, making Tallinn one of Europe's quietest capitals.

Combined with low crime, good air quality and a relaxed atmosphere, Tallinn offers the ideal destination for travellers seeking genuine peace of mind.

Switzerland and Estonia Continue to Shine

Zurich
Zurich claims second place with its outstanding pedestrian-friendly streets and generous green spaces.

Visitors can explore much of the city on foot while enjoying lakeside promenades, beautifully maintained parks and spectacular alpine scenery nearby. Although Zurich recorded slightly higher air pollution than some other leading cities, its low noise levels and exceptional walkability make it one of Europe's finest urban escapes.

Estonia appears again in third place with Tartu, a vibrant university city known for its quiet streets, rich cultural heritage and relaxed lifestyle.

Tartu recorded the lowest daytime noise exposure among all cities ranked in the top ten, making it particularly attractive for travellers seeking uninterrupted tranquillity.

Scandinavia Offers Nature and Serenity

Trondheim
Norway's Trondheim ranks fourth, combining outstanding safety with more than 40 per cent green space coverage.

Although its walkability score is lower than some competitors, visitors enjoy beautiful riverside scenery, colourful historic buildings and easy access to spectacular Norwegian landscapes.

Finland's Tampere also makes the top ten, boasting the cleanest air of any city in the entire study.

Its pristine lakes, forests and relaxed Nordic atmosphere create an environment that naturally encourages visitors to unwind and reconnect with nature.

Hidden European Gems Worth Discovering

Rijeka
Several lesser-known destinations performed exceptionally well in the rankings.

Lithuania's capital Vilnius offers impressive green spaces, attractive historic streets and relatively low noise levels, making it an increasingly popular alternative to Europe's busier capitals.

The Hague in the Netherlands achieved the highest safety rating of every city included in the research, making it particularly attractive for solo travellers and families seeking a worry-free holiday.

Croatia's coastal city of Rijeka combines Adriatic Sea views with generous green spaces and a laid-back waterfront atmosphere, while Slovenia's picturesque capital Ljubljana boasts the highest percentage of green space of any destination analysed.

Geneva, meanwhile, offers visitors one of Europe's most walkable cities, allowing tourists to explore lakeside parks, museums and elegant streets entirely on foot.

The Top 10 Most Stress-Free European Cities for 2026

  1. Tallinn, Estonia – 92.8
  2. Zurich, Switzerland – 88.1
  3. Tartu, Estonia – 86.6
  4. Trondheim, Norway – 84.8
  5. Vilnius, Lithuania – 82.7
  6. The Hague, Netherlands – 82.5
  7. Rijeka, Croatia – 82.4
  8. Geneva, Switzerland – 81.6
  9. Tampere, Finland – 81.5
  10. Ljubljana, Slovenia – 80.8

Europe's Most Stressful Cities

While many destinations excelled in creating peaceful urban environments, others scored considerably lower due to higher crime rates, heavier traffic, increased noise pollution and poorer air quality.

According to the study, the ten most stressful European destinations for travellers in 2026 are:

  • Naples, Italy
  • Antwerp, Belgium
  • Bucharest, Romania
  • Lyon, France
  • Athens, Greece
  • Thessaloniki, Greece
  • Marseille, France
  • Malmö, Sweden
  • Birmingham, United Kingdom
  • Milan, Italy

Naples ranked as Europe's most stressful city, primarily due to lower safety scores, higher crime levels and limited green space. Antwerp followed because of significant daytime noise, while Bucharest's combination of heavy traffic noise and poor air quality contributed to its low ranking.

Choosing a Holiday That Improves Your Wellbeing

Geneva
The growing popularity of calmcations reflects a changing attitude towards travel.

Increasingly, travellers are prioritising mental wellbeing alongside sightseeing, choosing destinations where they can walk peacefully, breathe cleaner air, enjoy beautiful parks and experience authentic local culture without overwhelming crowds.

Europe's highest-ranked calmcation destinations demonstrate that memorable holidays don't always require packed itineraries. Sometimes the greatest luxury is simply slowing down, enjoying beautiful surroundings and returning home feeling refreshed.

For travellers planning a European holiday in 2026, these peaceful cities offer the perfect opportunity to escape the pressures of everyday life while discovering some of the continent's most beautiful and underrated destinations.

The World’s Most Picturesque Ski Destinations for a Winter Escape Revealed

Vatra Dorne, Romania
Shoulder-season travel is on the rise, with travel reports showing a 50% year-on-year increase. And with ski seasons extending well into April, these escapes are increasingly popular among those looking beyond the traditional peak period - whether or not you’re any good on the slopes.

To find out where the most visually spectacular winter destinations lie, the experts at TouchNote gathered and analysed thousands of Street View images at ski destinations around the world, using AI-powered image scoring to reveal the most breathtaking winter landscapes in 2026, whether you ski or not.

Romania takes first place for the most stunning ski landscapes, study reveals

Topping the rankings with a commanding 9.7/10, Romania emerges as the study's standout country, outscoring Switzerland despite the latter's global reputation as a ski powerhouse.

With an average elevation of 975m across its top-performing destinations, the Carpathian Mountains deliver serious alpine drama. The image analysis placed Romania's resorts consistently among the highest-scoring for natural scenery, with forested mountain backdrops and unspoiled valley settings helping the country pull clear of the field.

Its highest-scoring individual destination, Miercurea Ciuc (83.11), sits at the foot of the Harghita Mountains in the heart of Transylvania's Székely Land, a region where the peaks rise sharply above a compact, characterful town largely unknown to international visitors. Second is Vatra Dornei (82.20), the so-called Pearl of Bukovina, a historic spa town set where four Carpathian ranges converge, combining ski terrain with some of the most atmospheric mountain scenery in Eastern Europe.

Val Müstair, Switerland
Joint second with 9.4/10, Switzerland earns its place through the sheer drama of its remote high-altitude destinations. Val Müstair, in the secluded Lower Engadin valley of Graubünden, was the only destination in the entire study to receive a perfect scenic score of 100/100, with lifts reaching 2,700m and powder conditions to rival anywhere in the Alps. Neighbouring Albula/Alvra (96.59) sits on the celebrated route between St. Moritz and Davos, favoured by ski tourers for its solitude and sweeping terrain.

Bulgaria shares that second-place position and boasts the highest average elevation of any country in the study at 1,490m. Its top destinations are rooted in the Balkan Mountains: Shipka (67.53), near the historic Shipka Pass, offers forested ridges and sweeping valley views, while Chiflik (67.39), close to the Beklemeto ski area, sits within reach of panoramic sightlines across the Troyan Balkan, Sredna Gora, Rila, and Rhodope Mountains.

Both Italy and France place fourth scoring 8.5/10 for their destinations' natural beauty, but surprisingly, neither country's top scorers are their expected famous resorts.

Italy's highest-ranked destinations sit in the Apennines: Ventasso (75.41) in Emilia-Romagna offers skiing in a quieter, more authentic setting, while Lagonegro (55.72) in Basilicata brings winter sport to the deep south at over 1,600m, a dramatic, remote location that sits entirely off most travellers' radar.

France, meanwhile, finds its scenic best in the south, according to the analysis. Le Caire (96.06) in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence scores among the highest of any destination in the study, its rugged Provençal landscape offering something altogether wilder than the groomed slopes of the grandes stations. Asco (94.59) goes further still, a ski station set in Corsica's granite mountain interior, where the island's peaks meet proper winter conditions in near-complete isolation.

Kutchan, Japan
Craig Law, Head of Marketing and spokesperson for TouchNote, added: “When we think of skiing, our minds usually think of the usual hot spots: the snowy peaks of France, Italy, or Switzerland, but the data shows there are some really underrated locations out there. Seeing Romania and Bulgaria appear before classics such as Italy or France can be surprising, but Eastern European landscapes are often overlooked in favour of what we usually consider to be “picturesque”.

Thanks to unconventional destinations featuring in the top five of our ranking, we’re happy to show that skiing in beautiful locales doesn’t have to be a financially exclusive activity. After the Olympics, we are seeing a surge of interest in the sport, and this shows that you can go somewhere more affordable and still send back a postcard with some breathtaking views.”

We really hope you find this release useful. If you do end up using it, we would very much appreciate a link to https://touchnote.com/uk/postcards/.

Vietnam and Switzerland Partner for Sustainable Tourism Development

Swiss Ambassador to Vietnam Thomas Gass and Deputy Director
of the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism Ha Van Sieu
sign a Letter of Exchange. (Photo: VNA)
In a landmark collaboration aimed at supporting Vietnam’s tourism recovery and long-term growth, Vietnam and Switzerland have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for a $4 million project focused on sustainable tourism. This initiative, named "Swiss Tourism for Sustainable Development in Vietnam," was officially launched in Hanoi on February 28 and is set to run from 2024 to 2027.

The signing ceremony saw Swiss Ambassador to Vietnam, Thomas Gass, and Ha Van Sieu, Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT), affirm their commitment to the project. The initiative will receive a non-refundable grant of 3.6 million Swiss Francs (roughly 4 million USD) from the Swiss Government, designed to tackle key challenges in Vietnam's tourism industry, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The project will initially focus on three provinces: Ha Giang, Quang Nam, and Dong Thap, with the potential to expand to other areas, including Hue, Can Tho, and Hanoi. The project has three main components. The first involves creating public-private dialogue mechanisms at various levels to develop tourism indicators and enhance Vietnam's competitiveness in the global market. The second component centers on providing in-depth training and skills development for the workforce in Vietnam's tourism and hospitality sectors. Lastly, the project aims to help tourism destinations in Vietnam implement sustainable practices while promoting green tourism standards among businesses.

Vietnam’s tourism has experienced significant growth in recent years, becoming a top destination in Asia. In 2024, the country led the region in tourism recovery, with a 37% increase in international arrivals compared to 2023. Last year, Vietnam welcomed 17.6 million international visitors and 110 million domestic tourists, with tourism revenues reaching 840 trillion VND (32.8 billion USD). The country’s increasing global recognition, including being named the "Leading Destination in Asia" by the World Travel Awards, is a testament to its growing appeal.

However, as Vietnam’s tourism industry expands, it faces the challenge of ensuring its growth is sustainable. Ambassador Gass highlighted that while Vietnam has immense potential due to its stunning natural landscapes and rich cultural heritage, the country must navigate the delicate balance between tourism growth and environmental preservation. Drawing from Switzerland’s long-standing commitment to sustainable tourism, the ambassador expressed confidence that Vietnam could successfully integrate these lessons into its tourism development strategy.

With this collaborative effort, Vietnam and Switzerland aim to set a new standard for tourism in the region—one that not only drives economic growth but also preserves the environment and cultural heritage for future generations. This partnership is a significant step forward in ensuring that Vietnam’s tourism sector remains competitive, sustainable, and resilient in the years to come.

Entire SWISS Boeing 777 fleet now equipped with CO2-reducing ‘sharkskin’ film

Swiss International Air Lines
Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) has been steadily providing its Boeing 777-300ER long-haul aircraft fleet with the fuel-saving AeroSHARK technology since the first aircraft so equipped performed the world’s first scheduled AeroSHARK flight in October 2022. The final member of the SWISS Boeing 777 fleet, HB-JNF, received its ‘sharkskin’ film at the beginning of this month, and all 12 aircraft are now in service with the innovative new technology.

The transparent AeroSHARK film is applied to the aircraft’s fuselage and engine nacelles. With its micrometers-deep ‘riblets’ that are aligned to the direction of airflow, the film replicates the hydrodynamic skin of a shark, reducing air resistance in flight by around one per cent. As a result, even with only part of its Boeing 777 fleet equipped with the new technology, AeroSHARK lowered SWISS’s kerosene consumption last year by over 2,200 tonnes, with concomitant reductions of some 7,100 tonnes in the airline’s carbon dioxide emissions.

“We are very pleased with the results that we have achieved with AeroSHARK to date,” says Claus Bauer, SWISS’s Head of Technical Fleet Management. “We’re proud, too, to be the first airline in the world to have equipped an entire aircraft fleet with this innovative technology. Each aircraft takes about a week to have its AeroSHARK film applied, which requires high-precision workmanship from our personnel. I am delighted that our commitment to this technology is delivering such positive results, and is enabling us at SWISS to take a further substantial step in making our flight operations more sustainable.”

Possible extension to further aircraft types

The AeroSHARK aircraft skin technology has been jointly developed by Lufthansa Technik and coatings manufacturer BASF. SWISS is also considering extending its AeroSHARK application programme to further aircraft types in its long-haul fleet in the medium-term future.

Details of how the AeroSHARK film is applied to an aircraft will be found in the SWISS Magazine as well as in the video here.

Basel goes wild for exactly 72 hours at the end of February.

The Carnival in Basel, which is on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List, starts 4.00am sharp on Monday19 February 2024 and ends 72 hours later.

Fasnacht is the name for the pre-Lent carnivals in Switzerland, southern Germany, Alsace and western Austria.

While Fasnacht celebrations coincide with the pre-lent, pre-fasting period in the Catholic cities, towns and villages of Switzerland, in Protestant Basel they take place one week later.

Cortège

The cliques and Guggenmusik players march in the cortège, with the parade following a set route through the city centre.

The Waggis on the floats distribute flowers and oranges along with other small treats, mostly food and drink.

Morgenstreich

The Morgenstreich sees illuminated lanterns paraded through the town by costumed revellers with drums and piccolos.

Throughout Fasnacht, Basel’s historic old town becomes the domain of the 18,000Fasnachtler who, in their Cliques and Gugge bands, march and perform pretty much as, when and where the mood takes them.

The Museum der Kulturen Basel presents a colourful cross section of the Carnival in Basel, displays of costumes and lanterns, masks and musical instruments and historical documents.

MANDARIN ORIENTAL, GENEVA UNVEILS ITS NEW ROOMS, SUITES AND MEETING ROOMS WITH RHÔNE RIVER VIEWS

Mandarin Oriental, Geneva
Mandarin Oriental, Geneva
unveils the new design of its Rhône river-view rooms and suites offering guests a unique and memorable experience. With breathtaking views of the river and décor inspired by nature, mountains and water, the newly redesigned rooms and suites with a Rhône river view are the ideal setting for a relaxing stay in the heart of Geneva, just a stone's throw from the shops and the Old Town. By also redesigning the décor of its meeting rooms, Mandarin Oriental, Geneva continues its transformation into an ever more modern and eco-responsible hotel.

The spacious and luminous rooms (from 26 square metres), Corner Suites (80 square metres) and Deluxe Suites (95 square metres) with river views have been redesigned using materials from Switzerland and neighbouring countries such as France, Italy and Germany. Embellished with contemporary Swiss works of art, the rooms and suites pay tribute to the history of the old building, formerly known as the Hôtel du Rhône, to the Swiss landscape and to the river's course from the glaciers to the Mediterranean. The pictures that adorn their walls were taken by great photographers such as Rosario Civello, a landscape and nature specialist, and Jean-François Hagenmüller, considered one of the greatest mountain photographers.

The rooms and suites with Rhône views play with the nuances and colours characteristic of the seasons. Bright spring and summer colours such as blue, yellow and light grey decorate the rooms and Deluxe Suites, while warmer orange and brown tones reflect the spirit of autumn in the Corner Suites.

The Corner Suites are enhanced by their unique views of the Rhône, St. Peter's Cathedral and the Swiss Alps. A spectacular mirror on one wall of each suite reflects the light and creates a harmonious and serene atmosphere. The Corner Suite is furnished like an apartment that invites guests to feel at home: the library and the living room with its majestic sofa are ideal for relaxation, and a dining area can accommodate up to six people. Mountain photographs are a natural part of the suite’s soothing and cosy atmosphere. The suite can be connected to a second bedroom, an ideal configuration for family stays.

Involved since the launch of its redesign programme in 2019 with a sustainable development approach, Mandarin Oriental, Geneva wished to strengthen its commitment with new initiatives. Since 2021, the hotel has continued its efforts to eliminate single-use plastic from the hotel’s operations. For example, aluminium soap dispensers and packaging have been installed, room key cards are made of lime wood and in-room water bottles are made of reusable glass. The hotel is also reducing its carbon impact by conserving resources. The energy used is 100% renewable and the redesigned rooms and suites with Rhône river views are now equipped with low-energy LEDs.

David Collas, General Manager, says “It’s with great pride that we unveil our redesigned rooms and suites overlooking the Rhône, designed with superior materials from Europe and reminiscent of our history and heritage as the Hôtel du Rhône. Our daily commitment to sustainability continues. We’re also determined to continue our transformation to provide unforgettable comfort and luxury leisure experiences for our guests and Fans of M.O., right in the heart of Geneva."

Hard Rock Hotel and Chasa Montana spas add to health and well-being proposition of the Swiss Graubunden region for GCC families

Hard Rock Hotel
The Swiss region of Graubunden is aiming to attract increasing numbers of GCC visitors this summer, with a focus on luxury and value-led health and wellness, as well as outdoor family adventures.
“In addition to Graubunden’s range of hotels and serviced apartments, Michelin-starred restaurants and immersive cultural experiences, which make it the perfect destination for GCC families this summer, the region is highlighting two rather unique spa hotels in our destination portfolio,” commented, Head of Business Development at Visit Graubunden, Tamara Loeffel.

Situated in the world-famous Swiss resort of Davos, the four-star Hard Rock Hotel, which opened in 2017, as one might expect the hotel comes complete with ‘Rock Star’ memorabilia such as an Elvis Presley jacket and a Beyonce dress and, of course, the obligatory Harley-Davidson.

Its 94 rooms, suites and 17 apartments are lavishly furnished with enchanting mountain and village views, and there is a themed restaurant appropriately called ‘Sessions’, as well as a rooftop bar with a 360-degree view over Davos.

Staying right on theme, the hotel has also introduced a ‘Sound of your Stay’ programme, where guests can order a Fender guitar or a Crosley player, including an amplifier, headphones and video lessons to their room.

However, this also extends to the hotel’s Rock Spa®, which takes wellness to a new level. It is the world’s first fully immersive music-centric spa, utilising amplified vibrations, pressures and patterns as the foundation for its treatments. The groundbreaking experience takes guests on a rhythmic massage journey – bass vibrations ripple through the massage table as treble beats come from above, sending pulses through the body and leaving guests feeling energised and invigorated.

These reinvented Rock Spa® treatments transcend current spa rituals and inspire spa-goers to ‘Play Hard, Purify Harder.’ Treatments include ‘The Smooth Operator’, ‘Face the Music’, and ‘The Wrap Remix’, amongst others. The Rock Spa® also includes hydrotherapy pools, steam baths and saunas with rhythmic massages, facials and manicures.

Situated 1,850 metres above sea level, in the charming village of Samnaun in the middle of the Silvretta ski, hiking and biking area of Samnaun-Ischgl, the Chasa Montana - Alpine Luxury Hideaway recently reopened after an extensive US$ 22 million renovation. It is the only five-star superior hotel in Samnaun and has been a member of the renowned Relais & Châteaux hotel association since 2014.

It has 25 double rooms and 20 suites, four restaurants, (including the Michelin-starred gourmet Stübli La Miranda), a wine cellar with over 1,400 different wines, a lounge with rare whiskies and a cocktail bar.

The hotel features an impressive 1,500-square-metre Roman-inspired spa with seven saunas and four pools (three indoor and one outdoor), all heated to a temperature of between 28-36 degrees Celsius. There are a variety of relaxation zones, a wellness and fitness area, a hairdressing salon, spa lounge and beauty treatment rooms. The Montana Spa blends natural luxury with refined elegance. Here guests can de-stress in sublime facilities, pampered with irresistible anti-aging skincare products and luxury spa brands.

The hotel is also a model of sustainable hospitality – state-of-the-art technology has been used throughout the entire building, focused on saving energy. A heat recovery system is used for the hotel's hot water demand and even its Pizza oven, as well as filtering the backwash from the indoor pool and whirlpools. The new ventilation system reduces heating oil consumption by 20%.

The hotel’s Chef, Bernd Fabian, also selects products from sustainable agriculture and livestock farming – in the spirit of Relais & Châteaux. He relies on local ingredients, with the milk and cheese products coming from local farmers.

During the summer months, Samnaun offers theme parks and children's playgrounds, with 80 km of mountain bike trails and 250 km of hiking trails with breathtaking views. Using the hotel’s "All inclusive" guest card, guests benefit from free access to a ride on the mountain railways from Samnaun to Ischgl, free access to the water park at Alpenquell, as well as other discounts.

“Quite apart from their unique facilities and locations of these remarkable properties, the general Graubunden region offers fresh air, outstanding natural beauty, mild climate and healthy outdoor activities. It is an ideal destination for GCC families that want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and the oppressive summer heat and humidity,” said Loeffel.

“Train rides through the mountains in the Rhine Gorge are considered among the most spectacular train journeys in the world. It is even possible to visit four different countries in one day – Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria and Italy. There are many other resorts worth exploring too, such as Vals, home to thermal baths, and the countryside around Flims and Laax, famous for its crystal-clear lakes,” she added.

Swiss, Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad all have convenient daily schedules direct to Switzerland, with excellent transport links via road or rail from Lyon and Munich for families touring different parts of Europe. For more information, please log on to https://www.visitgraubunden.com/en-ar/.
