Taste of the Tribes: Where the Future of Asian Fine Dining Returns to Its Roots

In a culinary landscape often defined by trends, five visionary chefs across Asia are quietly reshaping fine dining by turning their gaze inward—toward the roots of their land, their people, and their ancestral foodways. Within the Secret Tables collection by Secret Retreats, these restaurants—Akame in Taiwan, Dewakan in Malaysia, Nén in Vietnam, Oitom in Sabah, and Nusa Gastronomy Jakarta in Indonesia—collectively embody what we call the “Taste of the Tribes.”

More than just a movement, Taste of the Tribes is a philosophy—one that embraces indigenous wisdom, local produce, and traditional techniques passed through generations, while presenting them through the lens of contemporary gastronomy.

This year, the culinary world has taken note. Both Akame and Dewakan were named among Tatler Dining’s Best Restaurants 2025, a recognition that underscores their role as pioneers of progressive local cuisine. But beyond accolades, it is their shared respect for culture and nature that truly unites them with their peers—Nén, Oitom, and Nusa Gastronomy —in redefining how we taste, remember, and preserve the essence of our tribes.

At Akame, Chef Alex Peng draws inspiration from Taiwan’s Rukai heritage, combining the primal art of fire cooking with forest-foraged ingredients, each dish echoing a dialogue between the land and its people. Dewakan, led by Chef Darren Teoh, celebrates Malaysia’s indigenous ingredients with an elegance that is both intellectual and deeply emotional, telling stories of forgotten plants and overlooked flavors.

In Danang, Nén reimagines Vietnamese traditions through Chef Summer Le’s refined minimalism, while Oitom in Sabah expresses the Borneo spirit through smoky, grounded flavors that speak of the jungle and the sea. Meanwhile, Nusa Gastronomy pays homage to Indonesia’s vast culinary heritage, distilling the archipelago’s ancient recipes and spices into a fine dining narrative that is as soulful as it is sophisticated.

Together, these five tables remind us that cuisine is not only about taste—it is about identity, memory, and belonging. They are, each in their own way, preserving the past while shaping the future of Asian gastronomy.

A Shared Ethos: Returning to the Source

The Taste of the Tribes is not a trend — it is a reclamation. These five restaurants, each part of the Secret Tables by Secret Retreats, stand for a philosophy that honours people before products, and provenance before presentation.

Their menus are not designed merely to impress; they are written to remember. To remember who we are, where we come from, and how we connect to the earth through food.

Whether it is Akame’s mountain smoke, Dewakan’s native herbs, Oitom’s coastal foraging, Nén’s ancestral fermentations, or NUSA’s island storytelling — each of these tables carries the same message: the future of fine dining lies not in reinvention, but in reconnection.

Five Surprising Yet Beloved Flavour Pairings in Asia: Pushing the Boundaries of Flavour

Thailand’s Khao Chae
Asia’s rich culinary landscape is filled with surprising food combinations that defy conventional expectations. Whether it's blending sweet with salty, tangy with creamy, or spicy and hot with chilled, these dishes highlight the region’s fearless approach to taste. Here are five delightful flavour pairings that may just change how you think about food.

1. Ice with Rice Soup or Noodles

(Japan, Korea, Thailand)

A refreshing and hydrating dish perfect for hot weather, this meal features ice-cold water or chilled broth poured over cooked rice or noodles, offering relief from the heat. In Japan, Zaru Soba, chilled buckwheat noodles, are served with a soy-based dipping sauce, delivering a light yet umami-rich experience. Another beloved Japanese summer dish, Hiyajiru, is a chilled miso-based broth poured over rice, topped with sesame, cucumbers, and shiso (perilla leaves, a member of the mint family) for a refreshing contrast.

Korea’s take on icy meals includes Naengmyeon, cold buckwheat noodles submerged in a tangy, icy broth that is both invigorating and satisfying. Another variation, Kongguksu, features noodles in a chilled, creamy soymilk broth, offering a mild and nutty flavour. Thailand’s Khao Chae, a royal summertime delicacy, consists of rice soaked in aromatic jasmine-infused ice water, accompanied by savoury condiments like sweet, shredded pork and stuffed shallots. While chilled rice and noodle dishes are most widely embraced in Japan and Korea, Khao Chae remains a uniquely elegant Thai tradition.

2. Peanut Butter in Cuisine

(China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan)

Peanut-based sauces and dressings are an essential part of many Asian dishes, offering a creamy, nutty depth that enhances both savoury and spicy flavours. In Indonesia, Gado-gado is a beloved salad of blanched vegetables, tofu, and hard-boiled eggs, all generously coated in a rich peanut dressing made with ground peanuts, tamarind, and chilies. Malaysia and Indonesia also celebrate peanut butter’s versatility with satay, where skewered meats are grilled over charcoal and served with a thick, slightly sweet peanut dipping sauce. In China and Taiwan, peanut butter finds its way into noodle dishes, particularly in Sichuan-style Dan Dan noodles, where it blends with soy sauce, vinegar, and chili oil to create a luscious, umami-packed coating. The Taiwanese version often leans toward a milder, slightly sweet peanut sauce that balances out the heat from chili oil.

3. Shrimp or Squid in Pineapple Fried Rice

(Thailand)

Pineapple isn’t just for pizza. This tropical twist on fried rice features seafood cooked with pineapple chunks, cashews, and aromatic curry powder. A beloved dish in Thailand, the pineapple’s acidity cuts through the richness of the shrimp or squid, creating a refreshing, well-balanced, and delicious meal.

4. Cilantro with Ice Cream

(Taiwan)

Taiwan is known for its creative and sometimes unconventional flavour pairings, and one of the most intriguing has to be cilantro with ice cream. Found in night markets, this dessert features scoops of peanut ice cream sprinkled with crushed peanut candy, fresh cilantro, and wrapped in a thin crepe-like pancake. The unexpected addition of cilantro adds a refreshing, herbal contrast to the creamy sweetness, creating a unique balance of flavours that surprises and delights adventurous food lovers.

5. Tuna or Mackerel with Banana Curry

(Sri Lanka, India)

A surprising but delicious combination, where bananas add natural sweetness to balance the strong flavours of tuna or mackerel. In Sri Lanka and parts of India, this dish is prepared with coconut milk, spices, and green bananas or plantains, mellowing the dish’s intensity.

These unique flavour combinations exemplify Asia’s fearless approach to pushing the boundaries of taste. If you ever find yourself in these regions, be sure to give these unexpected yet beloved dishes a try—you might just discover a new favourite!

The signing ceremony, held today in Bangkok, was attended by Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, and Mr. Albert Liao, Executive Vice President of EVA Air, along with senior executives from both organisations. The LOI was signed by Ms. Pattaraanong Na Chiangmai, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing – Asia and South Pacific, and Mr. Tang Tseng, Vice President of EVA Air.

Ms. Thapanee said “Our collaboration with EVA Air has delivered exceptional results, showcasing Thailand’s unique culture and warm hospitality. This renewed alliance will inspire more travellers and reinforce Thailand’s position as a must-visit destination.”

The renewed partnership focuses on joint marketing campaigns, familiarisation trips for media and travel agents, attractive travel deals with tour operators, and participation in tradeshows and roadshows to maximise visibility.

Other successful activities include Thai tourism promotions at the 2024 BOOKIZCON in South Korea and a networking event in Sendai, Japan, involving 11 tourism partners.

Mr. Liao commented “Our partnership with TAT strengthens Thailand’s appeal as a premier destination. Through joint marketing and tailored packages, we aim to introduce Thailand’s attractions to more travellers across our network.”

Headquartered in Taipei, EVA Air is a Star Alliance member known for its modern fleet and exceptional service, serving 60 destinations worldwide. To meet growing demand, the Bangkok-Taipei route will increase to 32 weekly flights from 15 January to 29 March 2025.

In addition to regional connectivity, the airline links Bangkok with Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, and Macau via Taipei. It also offers direct flights from Bangkok to key European cities such as London, Vienna, and Amsterdam, with connections via Taipei to Paris, Milan, and Munich. For long-haul routes, EVA Air operates 87 weekly flights connecting Thailand to major North American cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Toronto, making it a leading carrier for North American tourists visiting Thailand.

Club Med Asia Snow Report 2023: Mountain Holiday Trends and Insights

Club Med, the pioneer of premium all-inclusive holiday experiences and a global leader in snow holidays, has unveiled the results of a recent survey on travel motivation for snow holidays. The study delves into key considerations and trends, uncovering useful insights that shape demand for snow holidays with over 3500 respondents across seven markets in Asia; China Mainland, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan markets.

“Club Med has played an instrumental role in shaping the evolution of snow holidays over the years, since we introduced the all-inclusive concept to the ski holiday industry with our first Mountain Resort opening in Leysin, Switzerland in 1957. With new capacity from the opening of Club Med Kiroro Peak, Club Med Kiroro Grand, Club Med Changbaishan, Club Med Tignes and Club Med Val d'Isère, the business volume of APAC markets has increased by 107% compared to winter 2019, and by 22% compared to winter 2019 excluding the new capacity. This increase is mainly due to the increased investments in recent years to upgrade the mountain's Resorts portfolio, the opening of new Resorts in the European Alps and Japan, and to the continued internationalization of customers.

Besides providing valuable data and proof points that define preferences of travellers while planning their snow holidays, this study validated our Mountain strategy and how premium all-inclusive experiences perfectly align with travellers' needs for a memorable winter holiday,” said Mrs. Rachael Harding, CEO of Club Med in East, South Asia and Pacific Markets.

She added, “Since 1950, Club Med has dedicated itself to reinventing the alchemy of happiness. Given the evolving lifestyle and demands of travellers, it is imperative for us to understand their expectations so we remain relevant in our engagement and identify key drivers to elevate the Club Med experience. With the rising demand for snow holidays, Club Med's exceptional offerings will continue to be a source of joy and adventure for our guests."

The survey brings to light six key findings on the evolving trends in snow holidays. From essential motivations behind choosing a winter holiday to preferred destinations and budget considerations, the survey revealed useful information about the forces driving demand from APAC travellers.

For precision of insights, the findings will reference collectively markets Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan as East and South Asia, and Pacific (ESAP), and ESAP and China Mainland collectively as Asia Pacific (APAC).

1) Snow Holiday Preferences: What Travellers Want

Snow holidays have become increasingly popular among Asians, with over half (50%) of respondents citing a desire for exhilarating winter sports and captivating snow-covered landscapes as their primary motivators.

Beyond this, travellers are also seeking to escape the monotony of daily life (45%) and explore new cultures and cuisines (30%). Excursions to local sights, indulging in spa treatments, tasting local delicacies, and convenient ski gear rentals are among the top desired additional services for snow holiday enthusiasts.

For snow holidays in APAC resorts, travellers are expecting to travel on average 8 days while 12 days was the anticipated length of travel for long-haul snow holidays in Europe.

2) Destination is Key to a Memorable Snow Holiday

The foremost consideration when planning a snow holiday is choosing a destination that boasts a wide variety of winter activities. Subsequently, finding appropriate lodging and factoring in the current weather conditions are crucial. These aspects hold significant weight for travellers planning their winter holidays.

Japan tops the chart as the most popular snow holiday destination, with 40% of respondents choosing it as one of their top two choices. Switzerland is a close second at 39%, followed by Canada at 27%. China Mainland follows in fourth place at 24% mainly driven by the domestic market as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan markets.

3) The Thrill of Snow Sports

54% of the respondents said that the primary appeal of snow sports lies in the thrill and pleasure they offer. This is especially true for people in the 25-44 age group, who also perceive snow sports as social currency to enhance their personal image of being successful.

Three in four respondents indicated experience in skiing and/or snowboarding, with skiing being the more popular winter sport. In fact, Japan (95%) and South Korea (90%) showed high levels of snowboarding or skiing experience, attributed to the proximity of snow slopes within both markets and hence the likely familiarity with winter sports.

For families with children, 6 to 8 years old is considered as the ideal age to start learning winter sports.

4) How Travellers Plan and Book Their Accommodations

APAC travellers tend to start planning for a snow holiday 3.4 months ahead except for China Mainland and South Korea indicating a shorter window of less than a month, while Singapore and Malaysia planning 4 to 6 months ahead, much more in advance than the others.

Travel inspiration is significantly acquired through digital channels and social media (48%) and online travel agencies (44%), followed by online blogs and communities (26%). Recommendations from family and friends exude a strong influence (38%) while other notable channels of travel inspiration are offline travel agencies (31%), TV travel shows and channels (29%) and travel/lifestyle publications (24%).

The top 2 factors when planning snow holidays centre around the destination and winter activities available, followed by type of accommodation and facilities.

Over 68% of the respondents prefer to stay in hotels and resorts for their snow holidays, with higher preference of resorts seen among those with kids compared to couples or singles.

Nearly half of travellers book directly their holidays on branded websites. This inclination towards both owned websites and offline travel agencies underscores the importance of maintaining a robust online presence and ensuring a seamless, personalized booking experience to cater to the varied booking behaviors of snow holiday makers across the diverse markets in APAC.

5) All-Inclusive Packages Appeal to Travellers for Convenience, Value and Peace of Mind

Two in three respondents claim to be aware of the term 'All-Inclusive', with significantly higher awareness seen among those with kids. Across markets, awareness is strongest in Hong Kong and Taiwan, followed closely by Singapore and Malaysia.

Over 80% of respondents find all-inclusive snow holidays appealing because they offer convenience, value, and peace of mind as they significantly reduce the risk of ill-planning, making them a preferred choice for those looking for a worry-free and enjoyable winter getaway.

Travellers also value the dining experiences, return airfares and airport pick-up services included in these packages. Access to specialty restaurants and bars, and the ability to availability of ski and snowboard equipment rental onsite also help to make these packages even more appealing.

For families with kids, the precedence of kids care facilities naturally remains an important element for snow holidays.

6) Stress-Free Snow Holidays for Families: Easy Planning and Peace of Mind

All-inclusive snow holidays can be a great option for families, as they provide everything needed for a memorable experience in one package.

86% of family respondents agree that an all-inclusive snow holiday is more convenient than buying and organizing different holiday elements separately, and that it provides the opportunity to enjoy different types of activities for one price. Additionally, 82% of family respondents agreed that all-inclusive snow holidays offer better value for money than à la carte holidays, and 83% agreed that they reduce the risk of ill-planning.

When asked who they want to travel with, spouse and children were the top two options for respondents. This illustrates the importance of family-friendly amenities and activities when planning a snow holiday.

Club Med: Meeting the Growing Demand for Snow Holidaymakers

Strategically, Club Med continues to develop its Mountain Resort portfolio with new openings in Asia, America and the European Alps, in addition to renovating existing Resorts to offer guests the best possible, premium snow holiday experience.

Club Med is well-positioned to meet these expectations with its portfolio of Mountain Resorts in some of the world's most popular winter destinations. Being the leader in mountain holidays for nearly 70 years, Club Med specialises in providing a variety of winter activities and all-inclusive packages.

Trends and insights from the Club Med Asia Snow Report study indicate that travellers are looking for more than just access to skiing and snowboarding. Today's travellers are seeking complete holiday experiences that include multiple facets. From comfortable accommodation, easy access to snow slopes and winter sports expert instruction complemented with availability of ski equipment rental; to delicious cuisine, family-friendly activities, and festive après-ski entertainment.

This is especially relevant to families. At Club Med, families can look forward to experience the unique Mini Club+ programme provided for children 4 to 10 years of age, developed in partnership with education experts in positive education pedagogy whilst a specially designed programme for 11 to 17 years of age keeps teens meaningful engaged. Complementarily, families can also participate in the Amazing Family! programme which provides opportunities for children, parents and extended family to connect through curated fun activities. As a result of a unique family-friendly approach, Club Med attracts a large clientele of families, representing 70% of resort stays.

Club Med Snow Holidays Booking Trends and Performance

One example of the above is the opening of Club Med Kiroro Grand, the fourth Club Med resort to open in Hokkaido, which has achieved near full occupancy 12 weeks ahead of its opening this December while the other three Hokkaido resorts continue to show similar levels for the same period – a true testament and endorsement by travellers of their trust and expertise in Club Med to deliver exceptional mountain snow holidays.

This is enabled by the keen focus on ensuring three-sixty services that ensure a hassle-free, safe and exceptional holiday experience. From easy transfers to and from the resort to the convenience of having your personal ski locker ready and warmed with personalised ski or snowboard equipment, and booking ski lessons complete with lift ski passes ready on-arrival, every snow holiday experience with Club Med enables guests to truly relax and enjoy their holiday, leaving all the planning and logistics to the resort team.

Aussies are full of wanderlust – but can we afford to tick off our travel bucket list?

Singapore Tourism Board
Booking.com
, one of the world’s leading online travel companies, has released the 2023 edition of its APAC Travel Confidence Index (TCI) today. This year’s index reveals a striking paradox: despite financial concerns ranking highest amongst travel concerns (51%), a majority of Aussie travellers (65%) maintain optimism for their future travel plans over the next 12 months.

Most Aussie travellers (63%) reported having no intention of postponing their travel plans, despite issues such as the rising cost of living, inflation, climate change and supply chain disruptions. Additionally, 53% of these travellers not only remain steadfast in their original travel plans but intend to increase both the trips they take and their travel budgets for the year.

The study also revealed that the need to save money currently is at odds with the incentive to travel sustainably, with just a quarter of Aussies (26%) willing to pay more for sustainable accommodation.

The TCI 2023 research, commissioned by Booking.com, surveyed over 8,000 travellers from 11 countries and territories across the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Conducted between April and May 2023, it presents an in-depth analysis of travel confidence and sustainability interest across APAC.

The report also reveals four distinctive traveller personas for the first time, providing valuable insights into their prime motivations, priorities and travel behaviours:
  • Comfort Seekers (Singapore, Australia) prioritise comfort and convenience, seeking indulgent experiences and accommodations with maximum relaxation. They value personalised services, high-quality amenities, prioritising comfort.
  • Conscious Explorers (Hong Kong, India, China, Taiwan) actively pursue eco-friendly and sustainable travel. They are passionate about exploring while minimising environmental impact.
  • Mindful Voyagers (Vietnam) have a deliberate and thoughtful travel approach, driven by their sense of responsibility to the environment and desire to help local communities.
  • Homebound Pragmatists (New Zealand, Korea, Japan, Thailand) prefer practical travel and staying close to home. They prioritise convenience, efficiency, and optimising time and resources.

A Snapshot of Aussie Travel Confidence

Aussies are not oblivious to the importance of managing their travel expenses effectively, and exhibit resourcefulness in planning their trips. When it comes to cost-cutting strategies, 58% opt for budget-friendly accommodation options, 36% choose to travel during off-peak times, 34% spend less on food and activities whilst travelling, and 31% select a less expensive travel destination.

Given the current stresses of everyday life, Aussie travellers are seeking out relaxing holidays to escape from reality. They are driven by their passions, showcasing a clear appreciation for the world and its wonders. The top five things Aussie’s are seeking in 2023 are:
  • 57% are looking for captivating scenery and nature
  • 53% are prioritising food and dining experiences
  • 53% of Aussies are still opting for the feeling of home with the sunny, beach and island style.
  • 44% looking to visit famous tourist attractions and landmarks
  • 42% immersing themselves in the local culture or lifestyle

“In the face of economic uncertainty, it's refreshing to see Aussie’s adventurous spirit lives on in their healthy appetite for continuing to explore their own backyard, as well as the world beyond our borders” said Todd Lacey, Regional Manager Oceania, at Booking.com.

"It's clear that travel will continue to be a priority for Australian travellers who are thinking smartly about how they prioritise their spend so they don’t miss out on experiences. Despite being one of the last countries to return to travel in 2023”

Australia.com
To further support travel recovery and demand, we’ve invested in events such as FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand, attracting thousands of travellers into and around the country. At Booking.com, we remain committed to making it easier for travellers to search, book and enjoy their perfect holiday and better experience the world.”

What Data Says About the Asia-Pacific Rebound

Travelers are gaining more confidence to book long-haul travel again, and many destinations in the Asia Pacific region are making a comeback. Tokyo’s neon lights and skyscrapers, Phuket’s pristine beaches, and Hanoi’s Old Quarter, with its maze of narrow streets, are among the hotspots.

A report from travel marketplace Skyscanner has looked at flight search and booking data from the Americas, Asia Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa — studying how travelers are planning and booking travel over the next six months.

People are booking long-haul travel more than 90 days in advance, returning back to pre-pandemic levels. Moreover, the report also stated that search share has reverted to pre-pandemic seasonal norms.

“Globally, we’re seeing more travelers come to Skyscanner than ever before,” said Mike Ferguson, director of destination marketing. The brand, owned by Trip.com Group, has more than 100 million travelers accessing its platform every month on average.

More Signs of Flexible Search Patterns

More than 50 percent of travelers are conducting exploratory searches without any set dates or destinations in mind, Skyscanner said. Many travelers are searching for ideas and comparing dates and locations to find the most favorable deal.

In a conversation earlier with Skift, Airbnb co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky pointed out how millions of customers have used the platform’s flexible date feature, which basically says, “I am willing to go anywhere for a night, a weekend, a week, a month in this date range.”

A Resurgence of Long-Haul Travel

The resurgence of long-haul travel globally presents destinations with a significant opportunity to attract high-value travelers undeterred by the challenging economic conditions, said Nick Hall, CEO of UK-based Digital Tourism Think Tank.

A key driver has been that airlines are adding back flight capacity.

Asia Pacific airlines posted a 376 percent increase in international traffic in January compared to the same period last year reaching 56 percent of January 2019’s level, as witnessed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The January numbers were by far the strongest year-over-year rate among the regions — albeit off a very low base, when much of the region was still closed to travel.

Capacity in the region rose to 167 percent, and the load factor increased 36.6 percentage points to 83 percent — the highest among the world’s regions.

Trending Destinations

Eight of the world’s top 10 trending destinations for travelers worldwide are in Asia, with Taiwan topping the charts, followed by Japan and Laos.

Despite Taiwan being the top trending destination, its relative share of searches is small. Japan takes the largest share, followed by South Korea and Vietnam.

Skyscanner noted that all three countries have benefited from improved non-stop services and air connections.

Saudi Arabia and Albania are the two nations outside Asia with the biggest increase in searches from last year during the first quarter.

Although Europe remains a popular region for travelers from the Americas, Asia Pacific destinations dominate seven out of the top 10 trending spots, with Asian countries occupying the top five spots.

China is the top trending destination, followed by Japan and Taiwan.

For Asia Pacific travelers, seven out of the top 10 trending destinations are within the region itself, as Taiwan, Laos, and Japan experienced the most significant year-on-year growth in the first quarter.

Laos, in particular, enjoyed a resurgence due to the introduction of new routes from international and regional airlines and an increasing demand from travelers for more unique and off-the-beaten-path destinations.

During the second and third quarters, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam are the most popular destinations among travelers, accounting for more than two-thirds of the trending search volumes.

Booking Windows Go Up

Travelers in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa are booking flights for summer holidays two to three months in advance, while those from Asia Pacific are booking both last minute and much further in advance, the report noted.

In the first quarter of this year, domestic travel bookings within Europe, the Middle East, and Africa were mostly booked in the 7-29 day window. The booking window further went up while planning for summer vacations as holidays booked 60-89 days in advance went up by 50 percent.

At the end of the first quarter, a booking window of more than 90 days still holds the highest share (31 percent) for travel to short-haul destinations from Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

This confidence is also reflected in booking long-haul travel, particularly to Asia-Pacific, as the share of booking windows of over 90 days increased by 11 percent in the first quarter to reach 40 percent.

The travel booking time frame for Asia Pacific remained fairly consistent during the first quarter as travelers preferred shorter booking periods for domestic travel.

However, with the easing of travel restrictions ease, people are booking both last minute and with a longer booking horizon.

The Skyscanner report said that booking windows of over 90 days witnessed an increase of 55 percent for short-haul travel, while bookings of less than a week increased by 22 percent.

And as Asia Pacific travelers become more confident about traveling long-haul and planning, booking windows for long-haul trips have seen significant increases.

For the Americas, booking windows are returning to seasonal norms as travelers plan their domestic and short-haul trips at least two months out.

Southeast Asian travel blog about taking the longer route

My name is Angie, and I grew up in a small town on the island of Borneo before spending the next good half of my life working and living elsewhere. Now, I work full-time in Singapore as a web developer while freelancing in media production.

I haven't spent a lot of time travelling or travelled to many places (just about 20 countries across 3 continents), but I spent a good chunk of my time in a few to feel like I had a home there. I prefer taking things slow, looking around me while I'm on foot or on bicycle, and learning about life in those places I'm visiting.

On my blog you'll find guides to a number of Asian destinations including Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Taiwan. I also cover some destinations outside of Asia including Andorra, France, Iceland, the Netherland, and the UK.

My blog is a lot about pictures and experiences through the journey itself. From typical guide-led tours to crossing the country on my own in a bus, you'll find a bit of everything here that hopefully will show you what I see in my exploration.

I'm a local of Southeast Asia aspiring to learn the lives of others in every part of the world, whether it's food or traditions or just the little things that surprise all of us. I offer a different perspective to travel in my blog, and am happy to take feedbacks on how I can better improve in sharing my experience while keeping my objectives.

I also offer simple guiding service to my home state on Borneo, and planning and companion services. More contents are in the works while I'm saving up for more travel, but for now, I hope that my stories will become an inspired trip for all.

Conscious travel is defining Asia-Pacific’s tourism rebound

Pratima Singh
Conscious travel is defining Asia-Pacific’s tourism rebound, says a new Economist Impact study

Key takeaways:
  • 87% of travellers in Asia-Pacific say sustainable tourism is important to them, and a majority are thinking differently about their next holiday
  • Conscious travel isn’t about the environment alone—in fact, more travellers say social (47%) and economic aspects (41%) of sustainable travel are more important to them
  • Travellers want to positively benefit locals both economically and socially, and connect more deeply with local cultures and communities
  • Shifting traveller behaviour is resulting in a growing preference for domestic tourism, travel to rural destinations and less crowded locations
  • 87% believe technology is either enabling or can enable conscious travel

Rebuilding tourism inAsia-Pacific: A more conscious traveller? is a report from Economist Impact, commissioned by Airbnb. The research is based on a survey of more than 4,500 respondents in Australia, India, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

The onset of covid-19 and subsequent border closures brought international travel to a near standstill and impacted tourism like little before it. Now, as tourism starts to rebound after a lull, travellers are thinking deeply about their holiday preferences, choices and actions, Economist Impact research shows.

The rise of the ‘conscious traveller’ is presenting an opportunity for communities to grow their local economies off the back of the travel rebound, and also welcome an evolving form of win-win tourism that emphasises genuine connection.

The Economist Impact finds that people are thinking deeply—and holistically—about sustainable travel, and their understanding of it encompasses social, economic, cultural, community and environmental aspects. When asked what the two most important aspects of sustainable tourism are, economic (46.7%) and social (41.3%) aspects were ahead of environmental (32.1%), cultural (31.6%) and community (21.5%) considerations.

More than two in three people say it’s important to them to create a positive impact for locals, with 58% saying it’s important they do not contribute to issues such as overtourism. In keeping with their desire to travel to less crowded destinations, many want to travel off the beaten path—about half the respondents plan to travel more frequently to rural destinations that haven’t caught the fancy of tourists yet. Additionally, 57% plan to travel more domestically than in the past, and aim to allocate more of their travel budgets within their countries.

Travellers are also mindful about the ways in which tourism can positively impact communities that are in need of economic recovery, and want to factor this into where they travel and how they spend their money. Almost three in five travellers say they will be more conscious about familiarising themselves with what is important to the communities they’re visiting and how they can make a contribution.

The desire for conscious travel is also being supported by technologies that are shaping travel practices. Eighty-seven percent of respondents are of the view that technologies are either enabling or can enable sustainable tourism, particularly by making information more widely and easily accessible. Separately, 43% believe that technology is making tourism in Asia-Pacific more inclusive by enabling more stakeholders to benefit.

Pratima Singh, senior manager for policy and insights at Economist Impact, and editor of this report, says:

“As tourism recovers across Asia-Pacific, we’re seeing a sharp focus on conscious travel among travellers of all ages. The shifts in traveller behaviour—and motivations—could leave an indelible impact on tourism in the region if all concerned stakeholders play their cards right.”
