The highlight of the morning was a keynote address from Jonathan Pain, financial analyst and geopolitical expert, who took members on what many described as a genuinely fascinating global journey. Drawing on eight years of living and working in Bahrain, Pain offered deep, considered insights into the driving forces behind the Middle East conflict, fascinating commentary on Trump and who his influencers were, and how the US and China relationship is ultimately the one which matters the most in terms of future global stability.

There was excellent food for thought coming out of last week's discussion, and it sets us up well as we move into business planning for the year ahead,” added Matt Masson.
The Sydney meeting builds on a strong start to 2026 for the consortium. CT Partners has welcomed three new members, World Business Travel, Gullivers Group and DIRECTIONS, bringing total membership to a record 35. The growth reflects the network’s increased focus on Business Meetings & Events, which has attracted both new member agencies and increased supplier engagement as corporate demand in that segment continues to strengthen.
This adds to the strong 2025 platform of $2.46 billion TTV, reflecting 11% growth YoY, and an NPS of 93 for a third consecutive year above 90. New research from Money.com.au has revealed the significant impact the ongoing Middle East conflict is having on Australian travellers in 2026, with nearly half rethinking their overseas plans.
A nationally representative survey of more than 1,000 Australians found that 48% of those planning international travel have either changed, delayed, or cancelled their trips since the conflict began.

The survey also found a notable generational divide. Gen Z travellers are the most impacted, with 61% reporting changes to their travel plans, compared to just 36% of Baby Boomers.
This reflects the greater flexibility and frequency of travel among younger Australians, who are often more likely to book multi-stop itineraries or seek out emerging destinations.

According to Sean Callery, the effects of the conflict are being felt far beyond the immediate region.
“The conflict is impacting popular flight routes, increasing travel costs and raising security concerns,” he explains.
Airlines have been forced to reroute flights to avoid affected airspace, often resulting in longer travel times and higher operational costs — expenses that are frequently passed on to travellers.

Callery advises Australians to stay informed and act quickly if their travel plans are affected.
“In times like this, it’s important to follow official government advice and make informed decisions based on the latest travel updates,” he says.
While many travellers assume insurance will cover disruptions, policies often exclude claims related to war, civil unrest or military activity.

Among those who experienced problems overseas, several issues stood out as the most common. Unexpected foreign transaction fees or other charges were reported by 15 percent of travellers. Another 11 percent of travellers reported that payment terminals or card machines simply did not work when attempting to make a purchase. While card payments are widely accepted around the world, technical issues and compatibility differences between systems can still occur.
Some travellers also struggled with ATM access while abroad. Eight percent said that ATMs did not display their account balance, making it difficult to monitor spending. Seven percent experienced problems with their cards being declined or blocked by their bank, while another seven percent were unable to access cash due to ATM issues or withdrawal limits.
More concerning were reports of suspected fraud. Five percent of travellers said they encountered ATM scams or suspected their card had been skimmed while using overseas machines.

Half of Millennials reported experiencing card problems on overseas trips, while 47 percent of Gen Z travellers said they had faced similar issues. In contrast, only 26 percent of Gen X travellers reported payment problems abroad, and the figure dropped even further to just 16 percent among Baby Boomers.
This trend may be partly due to the fact that younger travellers rely more heavily on card payments and digital banking while travelling, whereas older travellers may be more accustomed to carrying cash or using multiple payment methods.

It is also wise to carry some local currency when arriving in a new destination. Cash can be extremely useful in situations where card machines are unavailable or electronic payments are temporarily down.
When using ATMs overseas, travellers should choose machines located inside banks, hotels or major transport hubs where security is typically higher. This can reduce the risk of scams or card skimming devices.
