The Former Sydney General Post Office Celebrates 150th Birthday

Sunday, 1 September 2024, marked the 150th birthday of the heritage-listed General Post Office (GPO) building at No.1 Martin Place.

This historic building was the communications hub, linking Sydney to the rest of Australia and the world. The Fullerton Hotel Sydney is deeply honoured as the custodians of the building to celebrate this momentous occasion.

Constructed in two stages, beginning in 1866 and designed under the guidance of architect James Barnet, the GPO was regarded as a defining symbol of Sydney, comparable to the significance of the Houses of Parliament in London and the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The first stage of the GPO was completed and inaugurated on the 1st September 1874, celebrated as Sydney's first major architectural landmark.

The Fullerton Hotel Sydney's Director of Sales and Marketing, Darryl Healey, expressed the importance of celebrating the occasion.

“Here at The Fullerton Hotel Sydney, our team cares deeply about our responsibility to the GPO building and what it represents to the people of Sydney,” Mr Healey said.

“As one of the city's most iconic landmarks, the GPO building was home to Sydney's telegraph operating room for over 70 years and hosted the city's first public telephone exchange in 1882.”

60,000 years of songlines and stories celebrated in the Scenic Rim

With over 60,000 years of songlines and history to call on, Ugarapul man Kruze Summers is in a unique position to tell the stories of Mount Barney, the second highest peak in South East Queensland and the magnificent, rugged reminder of the ancient volcano which erupted 24 million years ago.

Thanks to Mount Barney Lodge, launching the first and only cultural immersion program in Southern Queensland just over 12 months ago called YARRIBA DREAMING, Kruze is doing just this, and he’s being recognised for it – last week this extraordinary cultural leader won the Young Achiever Award at the Destination Indigenous Queensland Awards, held in Cairns

Kruze, also known as Gurruhmun or ‘Old Man Kangaroo’, partnered with Mt Barney Lodge and Savannah Guides to develop Yarriba Dreaming, which is also the first indigenous tourism experience for the Scenic Rim, the region recognised globally as a must-visit destination by the famous Lonely Planet guide in 2022.

The half-day, full day and three-day immersion experiences sees participants immersed in the ancient landscapes of the Scenic Rim - walking, sharing stories, learning traditional Indigenous ways of living, and considering their own place in nature.

Yarriba means ‘walking’ and ‘we will walk together’, with Kruze and the acclaimed Mt Barney Lodge guides hosting the walks, fireside talks and ensuring a memorable and experience-rich stay at Mount Barney Lodge, acclaimed as an advanced ecotourism retreat.

Kruze’s ties to the area and the mountain run deep. He is descended from the Ugarapul people on his grandfather’s side and the Bidjara people on his grandmother’s side. He was very close to his grandfather (Uncle John) and because of this he began to understand the importance of the physical, emotional and spiritual connection to country. His thirst for knowledge and his deepening connection to his indigenous heritage led to the Yarriba Dreaming partnership.

Commemorate ANZAC Day with a Dawn Service at The Cenotaph in Martin Place

On ANZAC Day we gather in the pre-dawn light to honour those who have served our nation.

The Martin Place ANZAC Day Dawn Service will be held at the Cenotaph outside the Fullerton Hotel Sydney on Tuesday 25 April at 4.30 a.m.

This special service commemorates the time Australian soldiers first waded ashore at ANZAC Cove.

We invite you to a special gunfire breakfast.

As the sun rises, come in out of the cold and join us at The Bar from 5.30 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. for a Gunfire Breakfast. This tradition harkens back to when troops would gather for a modest breakfast before patrol.

On Tuesady morning, share in that same spirit of camaraderie as you enjoy hot bacon and egg rolls, generous serves of avocado toast with grilled tomatoes, house-made Bircher muesli and crunchy granola.
