IACC Meeting Room of The Future™ Visionary Global Initiative Will Transform Meetings

A dynamic new initiative from the International Association of Conference Centres (IACC) is set to transform the meeting experience through a global collaboration of leaders in conference room design, audiovisual technology, hospitality, academia and conference management. The project and initial global survey results are be unveiled at IACC-America's Connect annual conference in New York City this April. The IACC Meeting Room of the Future™ combines innovation and entrepreneurialism with the expertise of meeting industry professionals and planners.

The program's ambitious goal is to predict and showcase a clear vision of what is new for today and what solutions need to be sought for tomorrow's meeting rooms, to deliver what clients want and need for maximum productivity. Collaboration, productivity and inspiration will be at the heart of the 2016 concept, with the plan to build on this annually.

The initiative brings together the brightest minds and companies in the industry, to create both a physical and virtual meeting environment. Contributors include leading universities in the US, Europe and Australia, several meetings and technology companies and leading designers of venue furnishings. "As the only global organisation representing smaller meetings and venues, IACC is singularly-positioned to spearhead this initiative," affirms IACC's CEO Mark Cooper.

Effective research is at the core of the initiative. IACC is surveying a broad spectrum of the industry to identify and understand needs, track current trends and innovations and determine the kinds of learning environments that foster collaboration, ideas exchange and relationship building. “These environments profoundly influence people, behaviours, companies, politics and ultimately economies.” Cooper notes. IACC will engage with planners, meeting hosts, delegates, operators and suppliers, and is partnering with Meeting Professionals International (MPI) on a survey involving 1000 of the association’s members.

The project will address the most challenging issues facing the meetings industry today while showcasing the most innovative and useful aspects of tomorrow’s meeting room. Access to sufficient bandwidth is clearly a critical issue and one that demands thoughtful study and careful investment in equipment and training. As the industry becomes even more global, conference venues must offer first-rate teleconference services. The rapidly expanding number of new mobile devices used by planners and attendees demands powerful, high-speed connectivity that can host any number of devices and any group or number of groups. “Connectivity affects every aspect of the meeting experience,” Mark Cooper asserts. “Super high-speed Wi-Fi is essential throughout the facility as part of security and privacy, critical communications within the meeting experience and with colleagues beyond, sustainability and guest services.”

The results of the IACC Meeting Room of the Future™ survey will be published globally and at IACC-America’s Connect annual conference this April.

Current contributors and research partners include Meeting Professionals International (MPI), Microsoft, Dianne Devitt.net, Corbin Ball Associates, Sli-do, Benchmark Hospitality International, MGSM Executive Hotel & Conference Centre and PSAV.

The IACC Vision: IACC is a community of passionate people and organisations delivering innovative and exceptional meeting experiences.

Sculpture by the Sea 2013

"Diminish and Ascend"
The "Sculpture by the Sea" exhibition was held 24 October - 10 November 2013 along the 2klm Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk in Sydney, Australia. I was fortunate to visit this exhibition this Saturday, the second last day of the exhibition. Even though it was late in the afternoon I was not the only person enjoying this outdoor sculpture exhibition - hundreds of other people were also enjoying this annual sculpture walk. The exhibition is so large that it has been estimated that NSW receives over $59 million each year from visitors who come to Sydney to see Sculpture by the Sea. It is the world's largest free to the public sculpture exhibition.

The 113 sculptors came from all over Australia and from 12 other countries including South Korea, Denmark, New Zealand, U.S.A, England, Germany, Japan, India, Portugal and China.

Most of the sculptures were outside along the coast walkway, or on the clifftop park, though some were displayed indoors. They varied in size from small to huge. I could easily make out what some of the sculptures were, though with some others I scratched my head trying to imagine what they represented.

"Fallout"
Each year a winner is selected form all the sculptures on display. This year the $60,000 Macquarie Group Sculpture Prize was awarded to Stephen King (NSW) for his work "Fallout". This is the most generous sculpture prize in New South Wales.

From 1997 – 2004 Sydney Water sponsored the main prize with most of the winning sculptures given to the Campbelltown Arts Centre. In 2006 and 2007 NAB sponsored the main prize with the winning sculptures given to the Orange Regional Gallery. From 2009 – 2012 the Balnaves Foundation sponsored the prize, with the sculptures given to the Royal Botanic Garden.
"Horizon"
Lucy Humphrey's Sculpture "Horizon" won the $5000 People's Choice and $3000 Kids' Choice awards.

"A Shared Weight"
Winner of this years Bondi 2013 staff choice Prize was Elyssa Sykes Smith's for her innovative & extraordinary sculpture "A Shared Weight".

British & Irish Lions Legend Jim Telfer Recreates Famous Everest Speech To Fire Up UK Fans

Jim Telfer

British & Irish Lions coaching legend Jim Telfer has recreated his famous 1997 players pre-match gee-up meeting in an online video that provides a rallying cry for the men of Great Britain and Ireland to travel to Australia for the 2013 British & Irish Lions Tour.

The video is a tongue-in-cheek parody of the original "Mount Everest" motivational speech, which has become a part of the rich Lions folklore. The recreation sees Telfer preparing the men of Great Britain and Ireland for the battle that faces them in overcoming their greatest challenge - convincing their wives and girlfriends for permission to travel to Australia and follow the 2013 Tour.

"The British & Irish Lions Tour is the absolute pinnacle for players from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. There are no excuses to miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I'm urging every UK man to climb their Everest and support our team," Jim Telfer said.

While the video takes a lighthearted approach, The British & Irish Lions Tour is sure to be an incredible experience for players and fans alike and shouldn't be missed, according to Jim Telfer, who represented The British & Irish Lions both as a player and a coach.

As well as giving rugby union fans the opportunity to be part of sporting history, the event is also a stimulus for Australian tourism, with 20,000 fans from the UK alone visiting Australia for the 2001 Tour. Organisers anticipate a  similar level of support for 2013.

"British & Irish Lions fans are some of the most avid in the world, and we await the "Sea of Red" to invade our shores later this year. With nine games, including three Test matches, played throughout Australia, this will be a great boost for tourism and a wonderful opportunity to showcase the best of our country to as many as 20,000 travelling fans," said Andrew McEvoy, Managing Director, Tourism Australia.

"We have had a lot of fun making this video and hope rugby fans in the UK and Ireland will take it in the spirit it is meant, sharing it widely and encouraging as many of their male rugby friends to dig out their rugby jerseys and book their trip Down Under. A Lions Tour is special and you can't underestimate the impact the support of the fans has on a players' performance. Nothing will encourage the team more than running out to a sea of red Lions supporters, and we urge you to follow Jim Telfer's words of wisdom and come out to Australia with us," said Charlie McEwen, British & Irish Lions Director of Sales and Marketing.

The British & Irish Lions will play nine matches during the six-week Tour of Australia (5 June - 6 July), including three Test matches against the Qantas Wallabies and games against all five Australian Super 15 Rugby teams. The three Test matches will occur in Brisbane (22 June), Melbourne (29 June) and Sydney (6 July), with the Tour also including matches in Perth, Canberra and Newcastle.

This project is a joint initiative between Tourism Australia and The British & Irish Lions. Video - The video can be viewed on our YouTube channel

VisitEngland Announces Latest Domestic Tourism Figures

VisitEngland, the national tourist board, has announced domestic tourism figures for January to August this year. The number of overnight holiday trips in England increased year on year by 4 per cent, with holiday spend growing by 12 per cent.

Over the three months from June to August, which includes the key school holiday period, a total of 17.8 million holiday trips were taken in England - up 3% from 2010. As witnessed throughout the year, tourism spend has grown much faster than trip volumes; however, VisitEngland advised that this in part reflects inflationary pressures, with many operators seeing profit margins squeezed by mounting operating costs.

VisitEngland’s Chief Executive James Berresford said: “It is heartening that the number of people choosing to take a holiday in England remains above pre-recession levels. It is vital that we continue to work very hard together to maintain this trend as we approach one of the most potentially exciting years for English tourism.”

Australia Wins Commonwealth Games Bid

The announcement was made yesterday that Australia had won the bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2018. The Games will be held on the Gold Coast, in Queensland, which is just over the NSW border, from April 4 to April 15, 2018.

The Commonwealth Games is an international, multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The event was first held in 1930 and takes place every four years.

Australia has hosted the Games 4 times before – 1938 in Sydney, 1962 in Perth, 1982 in Brisbane, and 2006 in Melbourne. Other countries that have hosted the Games are Canada, New Zealand, Scotland, England, India, Malaysia,  Jamaca and Wales

The Gold Coast is Australia’s premier holiday destination featuring splendid beaches, surf and sand. What once was a sleep coastal town has been developed over rent years with many high rise accommodation apartments and hotels, restaurants, and night clubs. Australia’s major theme park – Sea World, Movie World, Wet’N’Wild, and Dream World are all located on the Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast was chosen ahead of the Sri Lankan city of Hambantota by 43 votes to 27.  The bid was built around the tagline 'It's our time to shine' and the hope of being 'the greenest games ever held'. The Gold Coast leveraged their argument for hosting the games on its extensive experience in hosting large scale sporting events and its existing high quality and well located facilities.

The Commonwealth Games is predicted to deliver $2 billion in economic benefits to the Gold Coast and about 30,000 jobs in the next seven years. Many more tourists will visit the Gold Coast before, during and after the Games.

On the Gold Coast the announcement was broadcast live on a big screen at a community event at Broadwater Parklands in Southport. The crowd of thousands fell silent as the moment finally came to hear the long-awaited decision. When the announcement was made the crowd erupted into deafening cheers, danced, hugged, and waved flags. Confetti canons fired over the sea of people, and balloons were released into the sky.

The Premier of Queensland, Anna Bligh says the win is a tribute to the hard work of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Bid team. "It was very clear early in the week that there were a lot of delegates wanting to support Hambantota and it's been a very very close vote," Ms Bligh said "So we've had 15 meetings, we've lobbied everybody, and the hard work has paid off. "I'm so proud of this team, I'm so proud of the Gold Coast, I'm so proud of being a Queenslander tonight."

Is This The Worlds Most Expensive Dessert?

If you are like me and have a sweet tooth, the most eagerly awaited part of a meal is the dessert. Many are quite economical, but some of the nicer ones are expensive.

The cheapest is perhaps a 70 cent packet of flavoured and coloured jelly added to water and set in the fridge. The most expensive? How about a price tag of $34,684
.
The extravagant chocolate pudding is believed to have broken all previous records thanks to its pricey list of ingredients which includes gold, champagne caviar and a two-carat diamond.

The dessert was created by Marc Guibert, head chef at Lindeth Howe Country House Hotel in Windermere, Cumbria. England. Guibert created the dessert to mark the start of the National Chocolate Week.

Inspired by the Faberge Easter egg, Guibert used four different types of the finest Belgian chocolate flavoured with a combination of peach, orange and whiskey, and the most expensive edible gold leaves to create a dessert that is a beautiful as it’s exquisite in taste and, last but not least, mind-boggling expensive.

It is layered with champagne jelly and a light biscuit joconde, finished with bitter dark chocolate glazed with edible gold leaf. It

It comes decorated with a gorgeous 2-carat diamond, but also with edible gold leaves. (You can’t eat the diamond.)

The dessert creation is still to be in the Guinness Book of Records as someone has to buy it first. However, that someone must order it three weeks in advance for it to be made, and only afterwards get to indulge in it.

It was officially opened its doors to the public in east London on Tuesday 13th September 2011.  It is 9 million square feet in size. On its three floors it houses more than 300 shops, 70 dining places, a 17 screen cinema, UK’s largest casino, three hotels, a bowling alley, a permanent art gallery, and many more features.

It is so large that it has been given its own postcode, E20. There’s parking for 5,000 cars but trains and tubes to Stratford stop right outside the mall

Newspaper Closes Down in UK

“The News of the World”, a Sunday newspaper in the UK is being closed down by its publishers News Corp. This follows the revelation that reporters have listened into phone conversations of people without their consent to gain information for their scoop stories.

The phone-hacking scandal dates back to 2005, when Prince William's staff first alerted authorities to the possibility that the News of the World had hacked phones connected to the prince, sparking a police inquiry.

The newspaper has been published for the last 168 years and featured stories on the rich and famous, from politicians to soccer stars. Tourist have read in when in the UK on weekends, and British people have read it to gain ideas for leisure activities and holidays.

The newspaper closure makes one ponder how information is sourced to be communicated with readers and listeners. What means are fair and what means are foul? Tourists and holiday makers need information to help them decide where to go, what to do, options for overnight accommodation and dining. It is to be hoped that the tourism industry in various countries around the world is ethical in its sourcing of information
