El Bulli becomes a gastronomic museum
Once renowned as one of the best restaurants in the world, Michelin’s three-star stalwart, El Bulli, shattered hearts when it closed its doors in 2011. In a highly anticipated move, the much-loved institution will reopen in June as El Bulli 1846 – a gastronomic museum and experimental lab celebrating chef Ferran Adrià’s legacy. The former restaurant will showcase the restaurant as it once stood and will educate visitors on how it paved the road to success.

Post-Brexit mutual free movement of people ‘critical’

The deVere Group has issued a statement saying : ‘it is becoming increasingly clear that the UK and the EU must strike a postBrexit mutual free movement of people agreement’. 

deVere believes this is necessary if both are to economically thrive over the next decade. 

The ‘call-to-action assessment’ comes from James Green, deVere Group’s Investment Director, as Nigel Farage, one of the biggest, highest-profile advocates of Britain’s departure from the European Union, believes “Brexit has failed.” 

Prominent Brexiteer and successful hotelier Sir Rocco Forte has spoken this week of ‘declinism” in Britain saying : “If I was in Italy, I’d be able to expand quicker than I could sitting here in the UK”. 

The deVere Group Investment Director believes there is a growing sense among politicians, the public and business leaders, that the UK and the EU must strike a post-Brexit mutual free movement of people agreement if they are both to economically thrive over the next decade and beyond. 

He says that while Brexit’s ending of free movement of people “continues to cripple critical parts of the UK economy such as transport, hospitality and retail, due to 330,000 fewer workers in Britain,” the end of free movement of people following Brexit has brought economic negatives for the EU too.

Encourage investment attraction to promote Vietnam tourism via cinema

The framework of the Program Connect to Develop Vietnam’s Tourism Brand Through Cinema 2023, held in Nha Trang City on 17th June 2023. 

The Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee coordinated with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MOCST) to organise the International Conference on Investment Promotion for the Development of Tourism Brand through Cinema 2023.

Attending the conference were MOCST’s Minister Nguyen Van Hung; Secretary of Khanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee Nguyen Hai Ninh; MOCST’s Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong; Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Tan Tuan and representatives of leaders of ministries and central agencies, leaders of the Provincial People's Committee, Provincial People's Council and departments, and branches of Khanh Hoa Province and 150 delegates who are corporations, enterprises across the country, film producers, directors, screenwriters, actors.

Giving his opening remarks, Mr. Nguyen Tan Tuan - Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee said, to promote the tourism as a spearhead economic sector, in recent years, the province has built policies to encourage and support the attraction of investment in the tourism sector, including investors and film producers, contributing to enhance the value of the destination image as well as create an impression mark of Nha Trang - Khanh Hoa tourism brand in the region and in the world. The conference is an opportunity for business partners, domestic and foreign investors to have a comprehensive and in-depth view of Khanh Hoa's potential, strengths and development expectations, as well as give suggestions and recommendations to help the province develop.

Speaking at the conference, MOCST’s Minister Nguyen Van Hung stated, Vietnam is a country that possesses many beautiful natural landscapes, rich in history - culture, and is an ideal destination for domestic and international filmmakers. This is an occasion for managers, filmmakers, artists... exchange and present ideas and initiatives on how to combine tourism and cinema effectively, strengthening the promotion of national tourism image, tourist destinations of Vietnam in general and Khanh Hoa Province in particular.

Tourism is considered as a "smokeless industry", making an increasingly large contribution and playing an important role in the economy of many countries. Developing green and sustainable tourism on the basis of preserving and promoting traditional cultural values in association with environmental protection is the development trend of the times. Tourism is also a bridge between tradition and modernity, between nations and cultures around the world, emphasises MOCST’s Minister Nguyen Van Hung.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, tourism's contribution to GDP reached 9.2% in 2019. Cultural industries also contribute about 3.6% to GDP. Initially, the cultural industries have also created tourism effects, increasing the local brand value. The movie “Dear Brother” or Yellow flowers on the green grass by Director Victor Vu has awakened the potential of the land of Phu Yen, the neighbour of the famous sea tourism centres of Nha Trang - Khanh Hoa and Quy Nhon - Binh Dinh. The movie “Kong: Skull Island” was filmed in Ninh Binh and has a huge contribution to introduce the attractiveness of the local’s tourism…

Recently, the movie “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” was filmed by Netflix in iconic Vietnamese destinations including Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hoi An, and Ha Giang, after only four days of premiere, it entered the third position of the most watched English-language film globally with 13.4 million hours of viewing; in the top 10 most watched movies in Vietnam as well as 77 countries around the globe. This is the most vivid proof of the attraction, attracting global audiences with the natural scenery, cultural beauty and people of Vietnam.

MOCST’s Minister Nguyen Van Hung suggested businesses, investors and relevant units under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism promote cooperation in linking cinema with tourism promotion. Creating the most favourable conditions in terms of procedures for foreign film crews to come to Vietnam; preferential policies on taxes and fees; attracting investment in building professional film studios; the coordination between localities, tourism businesses and film crews to effectively promote tourism from cinema; the synchronisation between the tourism promotion plan and the film production plan, exhibition activities…

At the conference, delegates were introduced about the potential and strengths of Khanh Hoa Province’s tourism, a number of typical tourism products of Nha Trang - Khanh Hoa - which can be used as images promoting tourism through cinema; preferential policies, supporting domestic and international film producers to make films in Khanh Hoa Province; views and commitments, funding appropriate film projects when implemented in Khanh Hoa Province…

Previously, in the framework of the programme, on 16th June 2023, in Khanh Hoa, the Forum “Vietnam’s Tourism and Cinema - Connect to fly high” took place. On the same day, the Opening Ceremony of the Film screening program “Khanh Hoa’s Imprint through Cinema" took place at cinemas: Lotte Cinema Nha Trang Tran Phu, CGV Nha Trang, Galaxy Cineplex Nha Trang. Besides, the program is also screened at outdoor public places in Cam Lam, Khanh Vinh, Khanh Son districts, Ninh Hoa town from 15th to 18th June.

There are 5 movies with scenes shot in Khanh Hoa to be screened at the programme: Brilliant Kisses; Mother in Law; The Lady Assassin; Sơn ca trong thành phố (Nightingale in the city); Tự thú trước bình minh (Confession before dawn). There are also 3 animated films produced by Vietnam Animation Studio: Meaningful Summer Vacation; the tail of Mama’s boy; Red-nosed cat warrior.

At 2/4 Square, Nha Trang City, the Opening Ceremony of the Photo Exhibition “Travelling Across Cinematic Frames” and “Khanh Hoa - Your Destination” also took place. There are nearly 400 photos showing the beauty of Vietnam in general and Khanh Hoa in particular. In which, the Exhibition “Travelling Across Cinematic Frames” and “Khanh Hoa - Your Destination” has more than 300 beautiful background images in the film were shot in 12 provinces and cities of Vietnam (Ha Noi, Ha Giang, Ninh Binh, Quang Ninh, Quang Binh, Thua Thien Hue, Quang Nam, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Can Tho, Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Thap) kept by the Vietnam Film Institute.

New Summit to Galvanise Policies on Culture and Heritage in Tourism

A dynamic new leadership summit will grapple with major challenges and opportunities of culture and heritage in tourism. Event organiser, the World Tourism Association for Culture and Heritage, invites stakeholders to make their voices heard at the new annual summit, the first of which takes place in Valencia, Spain, 24-25 September.

A list of respected high-level speakers from national government organisations, lending institutions, heritage organisations, tourism departments, local communities, academia, and private sector representatives will convene for a day and a half in Valencia. They will focus on creating viable businesses and building better livelihoods for people living in heritage communities connected to tourism.

The aim of the summit is to better conserve and promote responsible cultural and heritage tourism around the world – and for tourism to be the protector of the world’s culture and heritage.

Key sessions include the case for investment in heritage destinations, balancing tourism growth with heritage conservation, the latest global trends in cultural and heritage in tourism, better capacity building, training and education. There will be a session when anyone in the delegation can contribute.

The World Tourism Association for Culture and Heritage (WTACH) will present the Summit with host organisation Visit Valencia in the heart of Valencia, Spain – Europe’s Green Capital 2024.

“We believe that focused efforts can improve the lives and wellbeing of local communities and custodians through better implementation of best practices,” said Nigel Fell, CEO of WTACH.

TENACIOUS TRAVELLERS – WHY AUSSIES ARE REFUSING TO GIVE UP THEIR HOLIDAYS

Off the back of 12 interest rate hikes, Australians are under more financial pressure than ever before. However, research from Carnival Cruise Line has revealed Aussies are refusing to give up their holidays. Carnival’s bookings have increased by 20% this year, compared to the last full cruise season in 2019, showing the importance of R&R despite the cost-of-living crisis.
 
The national survey reveals Australians are more likely to spend their hard-earned cash on a holiday with friends and family (63%) than having brunch with friends (23%), going to the movies (22%), or going for drinks and eating out. In fact, when asked what they’ve had to sacrifice this year, expensive clothing, handbags and footwear (86%), new cars (82%) and house renovations (79%) were more likely to hit the chopping block before a much-needed holiday (53%).

But what’s influencing this demand for holidays? Well, day-to-day pressures have left 84% of Aussies saying they need a holiday now more than ever. The stats revealed we spend a whopping 15+ hours a week cleaning, doing laundry, cooking and meal planning, equating to more than one month’s worth of chores annually (780 hours). Parents also spend an additional 20+ hours a week taking care of the kids, so it’s no wonder 67% of us say we have no downtime.

According to Psychologist and Family Therapist, Leanne Hall, this refusal to give up our time off reflects a broader trend of Australians prioritising their happiness and mental health by finding ways to enjoy affordable holidays.

“After what has been an extremely difficult few years, Aussies are fatigued and tired of our day-to-day pressures, resulting in a shift in priorities. We are now recognising the true value that taking time out and spending quality time with our loved ones provides for both our mental, and physical health.

“Research tells us that connecting with others and taking time to unwind boosts our feel-good neurotransmitters including serotonin and oxytocin. These chemicals also help to reduce stress hormones such as cortisol. This, in turn, helps to reduce blood pressure, boost our immune system and reduce the risk of heart disease. Ultimately, this trend of Aussies choosing to book holidays is them choosing to prioritize their health.”

Despite being able to justify the cost of a holiday, Aussies still need to overcome some stress points when it comes to taking time off. Blowing the holiday budget (41%) and the hassle of navigating airports and flying (32%) were two major deterrents, but what’s even more concerning is that nearly half of us (45%) are discouraged from taking a holiday because it’s too stressful to plan one on top of everything else.

Undoubtedly, this has influenced Australia's desire for all-inclusive holidays, with 61% of the nation more likely to book one because they don’t need to worry about the planning. To provide some relief to tired Aussies, Carnival Cruise Line has introduced its new Choice Plus offering, giving guests double the onboard spending money so they can treat themselves to anything from hand-crafted cocktails to specialty dining or massages. All this, on top of the extensive inclusions already provided in the fare. “For many of us, the daily pressure of life is more stressful than ever, so it’s no surprise that Aussies are desperate for some time off. As the world counts down to the first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup match on Australian soil on 20th July, for those who can’t get enough of the action, FIFA and Destination NSW are hosting the FIFA Fan Festival™ in Sydney’s CBD.

Football fans, families and fun-seekers will be united with a buzzing festival atmosphere and can watch EVERY match of the tournament with live music performances from acts like Jack River, enjoy delicious street food feasts, explore a football playground and the first FIFA Museum in Australia and purchase FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ Official Licensed Products from the official FIFA store – all at Tumbalong Park in Darling Harbour.

The FIFA Fan Festival™ will open from 4:00pm on 20th July and on all FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ match days. The public viewing area is free and will have capacity for 5,000 football fans. Britain’s best footballing cities

Britain is a nation of football fanatics. As the birthplace of modern football, having played ‘the beautiful game’ since the mid-19th century, stadiums can be found across the country, hosting everything from the Premier League down to non-league matches. If you’re keen to immerse yourself in a game, or enjoy a slice of Britain’s footballing heritage during a future visit, here are some of the highlights in store…

Stadium tours

Feel the tension in the players’ tunnel and experience the dressing rooms where legends prepare to do battle on the pitch. Most Premier League and Scottish Premiership clubs provide guided tours, while some also have museums. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium even offers a nerve-jangling 90-minute tour of the roof, via a glass walkway 46.8 metres above the pitch.

Derby day

For the ultimate in crowd noise, on-pitch rivalries and ‘bragging rights’ for the victor, catch a match between two local teams, known as ‘Derby’ games. National Football Museum

The National Football Museum in Manchester has over 2,500 items on display, alongside a programme of temporary exhibitions linking football with topics as diverse as fashion, art and the First World War. A Hall of Fame is dedicated to players and managers who have won trophies, broken records and left their mark on the game.

Scottish Football Museum

Based within Hampden Park in Glasgow, the Scottish Football Museum traces the history of Scottish football from the 19th century right up until today. Visitors enter through a turnstile from the old ground before being able to explore thousands of items and watch film footage highlighting memorable games and great Scottish players.

Meet a football legend

Premium match-day hospitality packages often feature the chance to meet a retired footballing legend during a pre-match drinks reception and four-course meal. Witness top-flight action and lower-league rivalries
There’s more than 40,000 registered football clubs in England alone, but all across Britain you’ll find ties to football. Everton and Liverpool play their home matches less than a mile from each other across Stanley Park. With Liverpool at Anfield and Everton at Goodison Park, it only adds to a fizzing city atmosphere.

London

Glasgow

Skateparks in Los Angeles became part of L.A. culture when surfing legend Hobie Alter created Hobie Skateboards in the 1960s. Shortly after, places like Venice Beach were deemed major skate destinations, appearing in numerous skate videos.

Today, Los Angeles and the surrounding areas boast impressive skateparks featuring ramps, bowls and rails. Skateparks are tourist attractions in their own right, and they're given celebrity status thanks to the pros who have helped design them.

A few details before you go: many skateparks are free, while others cost a few dollars for the day, and most public parks require proper protective gear. Places that rent skateboard equipment are few and far between - otherwise, get out there and enjoy!

BELVEDERE SKATEPARK

Designed by Lawrence R. Moss & Associates, the $1.1 million Belvedere Skatepark (4914 E Cesar E Chavez Ave, Los Angeles 90022) in East Los Angeles is an all-out tribute to skateboard culture. When the park opened, local pros such as Tony Alva tested out the concrete. Complete with pools, a wall ride, vert waves and more, the park is packed with features and skaters who know their tricks. THE COVE SKATEPARK

One of the birthplaces of modern skateboarding, The Cove Skatepark (1401 Olympic Blvd, Santa Monica 90404) features 20,000 square feet of ramps, bowls, stairs, pool with tile coping, over-vert bowl, and the Douglas Park rail.

The Cove is where the legendary Dogtown crew spent much of their time transforming surf moves into skateboarding tricks. When skateboarding hit another wave of popularity in the 1990s, The Cove was a prime location in skateboarding videos.

CULVER CITY SKATEPARK

Created by the city and a group of local skaters, the Culver City Skatepark (9910 Jefferson Blvd., Culver City 90232) has a wealth of features, including ledges, rails, a flow area and the famed clover pool — widely regarded as one of the best skatepark pools in SoCal. Free.

VENICE BEACH SKATEPARK

It's not hyperbole to say that modern skateboarding was born in Dogtown - an area that spans Venice Beach and Ocean Park. In the 1970s, a group of young surfers known as the Zephyr Competition Team (aka Z-Boys) started earning a local reputation for their new style of skateboarding. The Z-Boys changed skateboarding culture forever when they started dropping into residential pools that were sitting empty due to the severe drought in Southern California. They were the first skateboarders to catch air and paved the way for global icons like Tony Hawk.

The Z-Boys legacy is on full display at the Venice Beach Skatepark (1608 Ocean Front Walk, Venice 90291), which opened in October 2009 and attracts visitors from around the world. Located off the world-famous Boardwalk and the Marvin Braude Bike Trail (aka The Strand), the 16,000 square-foot skatepark welcomes pros and amateurs alike to drop in for a session, while photographers and videographers capture every move and tourists experience the homegrown sport that's grown from Westside backyards to a worldwide phenomenon.

VERDUGO SKATE PARK

Street, vert and pool sections make the 15,000 square-foot Verdugo Skate Park (1621 Cañada Blvd, Glendale 91208) a local gem for skaters to pull off new tricks. Opened in April 2004, the park features a clover bowl with over-vert section, kidney pool, street plaza with rails and ledges, and a snake run that lets out into a bowl with a loveseat.

Flight-free Byway shows how slow travel cuts carbon

Byway’s third impact report shows how the company is delivering on its mission to make flight-free travel mainstream. 

Byway is the first 100% flight-free holiday planning operation founded in 2020 by Cat Jones. Trips, currently available across Europe, include customised transport, accommodation and ondemand expert advice, plus a low carbon footprint. 

The Byway survey reveals how the company is growing its offering of flight-free slow travel. It is thought that 10% of all the world’s greenhouse gas emissions come from tourism, with at least 2.5% of global carbon emissions attributed directly to flying. 

Over the past year Byway says it has grown 450%, saved 170 tonnes of CO2, expanded into 22 new regions.

With culturally relevant food, the emphasis is on dishes that not only contain locally sourced, seasonal ingredients, but gives guests a taste of East African culinary traditions. There is a focus on refreshing and light food – as well as everything from mezze boards poolside, fireside snacks, and tapas.

As the epitome of sustainable tourism, Mara operates entirely off the grid and relies on a custom-designed solar system for its power. LED lights throughout result in a lower load. More indigenous trees have been planted around camp to create more shade and negate the need for air conditioners. Appliances, such as the bar-deli fridges, and the energy-efficient fans in tents (instead of air conditioning)are all AAA rated. Local art has been introduced throughout, including an oversized, beaded piece by Sidai Designs, which took four months to complete. Only local construction workers and artisans from the area were used on the project.

Booking.com reveals Aussies will pay more to travel sustainably

  • 64% of Australian travellers say they want to travel more sustainably over the coming 12 months, while 77% say the global energy crisis and rising cost of living is impacting their spending plans
  • Over half (58%) of Aussies believe more sustainable travel options are too expensive, in contrast to only 36% who are willing to pay extra for travel options with a sustainable certification
  • 500,000+ accommodations globally are being recognised for their sustainability efforts with a Travel Sustainable badge on Booking.com

Booking.com has revealed new sustainability research, with insights gathered from more than 33,000 travellers across 35 countries and territories, to highlight an unfolding dilemma - travellers worldwide are feeling pressured to choose between cutting costs and being more mindful about making more sustainable travel choices. 

At a time of general global uncertainty, travelling more sustainably continues to be front of mind, with a clear majority (72%) of Australians believing people need to act now and make more sustainable choices for future generations. 42% agree that recent climate change issues have encouraged them to be more sustainable. 

Sustainability vs spending 

Almost two thirds (64%) of travellers say they want to travel more sustainably over the coming 12 months, while even more (77%) think the global energy crisis and rising cost of living is impacting their spending plans - the two are mutually exclusive. Nearly half of travellers believe they must make a choice between sustainability and spending, with over half of Aussies (58%)  believing more sustainable travel options are too expensive (up 14% from Booking.com’s 2022 data). 

With travel well and truly back and a more urgent focus on conscious choices, over a third (36%) of travellers would be willing to pay more for travel options with a sustainable certification. Nearly half (49%) want discounts and economic incentives in order to opt for eco-friendly options (up 15% from 2022).

Breaking through barriers to drive change

From limited data to a perceived lack of options, barriers to travelling more sustainably appear higher than ever. Just under half (49%) believe there are not enough sustainable travel options, while 72% want travel companies to offer more sustainable travel choices (up from 61% in 2022). Despite good intentions, 43% of travellers don’t know where to find more sustainable options. Additionally, 75% seek authentic experiences that are representative and support cultural sustainability, yet in stark contrast 35% don't know how or where to find these options that give back to the local community.

A regenerative mindset for the entire trip

Amid rising climate anxiety, travellers are becoming more responsible consumers, from their accommodation to their transport choices. Just over two thirds (68%) are wanting to leave the places they visit better than when they arrived, and are increasingly adopting a regenerative mindset.  

For example, travellers can now easily filter their rental car search results on Booking.com to quickly find fully electric and hybrid cars across 110 countries for their next trip. Or choose one of over 500,000 more sustainable options for their next stay, no matter the accommodation type. Demand is clear with over half (58% ) wanting to stay in a particular accommodation if they knew it had a sustainable certification
