In 2021 she took out the crown for Runner Up Miss Rockabilly – a hotly contested pin-up girl pageant showcasing rockabilly style that’s held annually at Cooly Rocks On. She gives us the scoop on her favourite things about this event.

What do you love about Cooly Rocks On?
Cooly has a significant history that is unique to the area. Although it typically centres around classic car culture there’s also a really incredible dynamic to the people it attracts. It’s not just ‘rev heads’. It’s a real community of people from all walks of life. I think this is why it’s so popular. Everyone is welcome and there’s a real appreciation and respect for everyone regardless of age or experience. This is what brings me back time and time again – it’s the community attached to the event that really drives Cooly Rocks On.

What’s on top of your list for this year’s event?
With such an electric atmosphere, you can understand that one day is simply not enough time to do and see it all. Throughout the years, Cooly has hosted some incredible stage talent and this year is no exception. This year I’ll be looking forward dancing at The Harvest Ball, getting around to all the classic cars on display and watching as much of the swing dancing as I can. I’ll finish it up by spending a small fortune at the markets I’m sure!

PETER TULLY – PRESIDENT OF THE SCARAB CAR CLUB
Peter Tully is president of the SCARAB (Still Rockin’ And Cruisin’ And Boppin’) Car Club, showcasing the best private vehicle collections in Australia. What do you love about Cooly Rocks On?
My wife Anita and I have attended the festival since we started to learn Rock ‘n’ Roll Dancing over 20 years ago. A few years later, we bought the first of our two classic 1970s Valiant Chargers. We joined the SCARAB Car Club soon after, and I took over as President about 12 years ago. Although we live in Robina on the Gold Coast, we book an apartment in Coolangatta each year, as it’s so convenient to access the music venues, dancing and cars that way.

What makes Cooly Rocks On a special event for you?
As President of the SCARAB Car Club, it is especially great for me to organise the Annual CRO/SCARAB Thursday car run each year. This year the destination is the new Gold Coast Motor Museum. Our members look forward to it each year, as we have met like-minded people from all over Australia on these cruises, many of whom cruise with us each year!

The Shannon’s Show ‘n’ Shine lines the streets with over 900 cars from the 50s, 60s and 70s era ranging from classics, customs, hot rods and muscle cars. NEW WORLD-CLASS ART MUSEUM AT BUNDANON

Art Museum and Bridge for Creative Learning.

Bundanon has open the doors to its new Art Museum and Bridge for Creative Learning.

The museum will present a year-round program of exhibitions of modern, contemporary and First Nations art, as well as new commissions.

The Bridge houses a creative learning centre with break out spaces. It offers accommodation for up to 64 guests and café and dining facilities offering sweeping views over the Shoalhaven River.

The project has been funded by a $22.5 million investment from the Australian Government, $10.3 million from the NSW Government and philanthropic support.

Minister for the Arts Ben Franklin said the NSW Government was proud to be involved in the funding of the Art Museum, which will ensure the protection of its Arthur Boyd art collection for the public.

Bundanon CEO Rachel Kent said: “This expansion will widen public access, deepen engagement in creativity and the landscape, and position Bundanon both nationally and internationally."

Mt Tamborine is picnic paradise and has more picnic areas than a year has days; Cedar Creek Falls is by far one of the best. Driving up the winding roads and taking in the scenic beauty is almost enough entertainment. But that’s not all; Cedar Creek Falls are located just metres from three waterfalls and countless walking tracks, making it the perfect place to spend your next Sunday.

3) MACINTOSH ISLAND | SURFERS PARADISE

This little oasis nestled in Surfers Paradise (most commonly used for getting around the GC600 every year) is great for picnic dates of all sorts. The tranquil setting with cascading water running through the park is home to many birds, so don’t forget your stale bread. There’s also that super fun bridge previously built for the Indy in 2007. When you’ve had enough, head into town for a drink at one of the many trendy bars.

4) GOLD COAST REGIONAL BOTANICAL GARDENS | BENOWA

It’s hard to believe that this beautiful little piece of earth is a mere 10-minute drive from Surfers Paradise. In case you haven’t been to the Botanical Gardens, we urge you to go! Whether you want to take the whole family or go on a romantic date, it’s the perfect setting for both and anything in between. They even have a butterfly garden! You’ll have to make it an early arvo picnic though; they close daily at 7pm.

5) CASCADE GARDENS | BROADBEACH

Cascade Gardens are centrally located in between Surfers and Broadbeach and offer you more than a few barbecue and (undercover) picnic shelters. This peaceful riverside sanctuary is the perfect date hot spot but with a huge playground, it’s also popular with families wishing to keep the kids entertained for hours.

6) BURLEIGH HILL | BURLEIGH

This one is a no-brainer, Burleigh Hill is without a doubt the most popular picnic spot on the Coast. You can’t beat the views overlooking the Surfers Paradise skyline. Although if you want to get a good spot on a Sunday, be sure to get there early as many locals (and travellers alike) regularly unite here to see and be seen. Even for a solo trip, the sunset is picturesque.

7) ED HARDY PARK | MIAMI

Adjacent to North Burleigh Surf Club is Ed Hardy Park, offering a huge kids playground and a number of BBQ areas perfect for that Sunday arvo picnic with the family. Walk up Miami Hill and take in the views towards Surfers Paradise or have a delightful dip in the ocean. Even if you run out of supplies, Coles and Aldi are just across the road, or like most people, you might just end up at Miami Shark Bar.

8) TALLEBUDGERA CREEK | TALLEBUDGERA

The battle between what side to choose at Tally Creek continues. But no matter which one you go to, Tallebudgera Creek won’t disappoint as a family favourite. The calm creek waters are perfect for a little splash before devouring your mobile buffet. Beware of the hungry bush turkeys.

9) LONG TAN PARK | CURRUMBIN

Not many people know about this lovely yet hidden little picnic spot in Currumbin Valley. It’s a great destination to get away, relax by the creek and maybe even go for a dip. But note well in advance, there are no toilets or BBQ stations, pure nature is the theme here, so come prepared. Drive along Currumbin Creek Road and take a right turn at Bains Road, the park is situated just over the bridge.

10) KIRRA LOOKOUT | COOLANGATTA

Kirra Lookout is the Burleigh Hill of Coolangatta; just not as busy with more parking opportunities (tick!). You can either drive or walk up, but be warned, it’s quite steep – you’ll burn off your picnic before you make it to the top. Enjoy the view whilst nibbling on some crackers and sipping on an icy cold one, it’s pretty special.

DAY ONE: BURLEIGH TO TALLEBUDGERA

Take a stroll around Burleigh Head National Park

For a walk that highlights the best land and seascape views of both Tallebudgera, Burleigh and beyond, look no further than the natural headland in Burleigh Head National Park. With two trail options – one slightly more challenging than the other – you can be in the thick of the rainforest’s lush vegetation or viewing the Gold Coast from an elevated vantage point in just minutes… all without paying a cent.

Southern Access:
• Accessible from the car park just before Tallebudgera Bridge, south of Jellurgul Aboriginal Cultural Centre.

Northern Access:
• Entry via the top car park on Goodwin Terrace in Burleigh Heads.

Ocean View Walk
The Ocean View Walk is an easy 1.3km (one way) trail that’s not too taxing on the body and offers spectacular views of the seaway entrance or ‘mouth’ of Tallebudgera Creek and the neighbouring coastline of Palm Beach. Not to mention stunning vistas of Burleigh all the way to Surfers Paradise. If you’re keen to stop for a swim, swing a right at the fork at about 5-10 minutes into your walk via this south Tallebudgera Creek entrance to visit the secluded Echo Beach. Or opt for the patrolled Lifeguard area at Burleigh Heads Beach at the opposite end.

Rainforest Circuit
Regardless of what entrance you start at, the Rainforest Circuit (2.3km return) is one that reaps great reward. Take on the challenge of around 100 steps and several gradual inclined paths to reach a maximum elevation of 74 metres, stopping at Tumgun Lookout on the way. Here you’ll find a small viewing platform with magnificent unobtrusive views of the southern Gold Coast. While you stand and take it all in, you may also be lucky enough to see local birdlife, lizards and even whales (generally from June to October) frolicking in the distance.

Dust also holds a rolling calendar of events from local jazz singers, theatre performances and dance shows to touring local musicians and live poetry readings, so whatever time of year you choose to visit the Gold Coast, there’s bound to be something here to tickle your fancy.

Taking the old-school roadside fruit and veggie stall to the next level, we introduce to you Freeman’s Organic Farm. Operating one-hour long farm tours every Sunday at 10am around the 25-acre property, visitors learn all about the impressive history of the farm (which originally started as a banana plantation), whilst taking in what is arguably some of the best views in the entire Currumbin Valley.

Located on Tomewin Road in Currumbin, Freeman’s Organic Farm is open Friday to Sunday, 7.30am to 2.30pm.

Wander eco-friendly stalls at The Green Marquee Twilight Market
Continuing the organic theme from Freeman’s Farm, jump back in the car and head north-east for 10 minutes, past the popular Currumbin Rock Pools to the corner of Village Way and Currumbin Creek Road. Here you’ll find Gold Coast markets and specialty events company, The Green Marquee in Currumbin’s Ecovillage.

Held every second Saturday of the month from 3-8pm, this eco-friendly twilight market is a collection of recycled fashion, homewares, art and beauty. And if that isn’t enough to convince you, there’s also live music and a range of food stalls on offer, including a small selection of gin and craft beers – all ready for you to enjoy over a beautiful sunset and early evening stars.

Top 7 Sunrise and Sunset Spots

There are so many vantage points from which to catch the sun rising or taking its last gasp on the Gold Coast and they’re well worth the wake and wait. Thank us later and read on for our top 7 must-see Gold Coast sunrise and sunset spots.

SNAPPER ROCKS

Sunrise at Snapper Rocks as the barrels are thumping. It’s barely 4.30 am yet one die-hard surfer is already tackling the cheeky waves and another is about to enter. In another hour, the water will be dotted with devotees to the Gold Coast surf culture. Photographers too, adore this southern spot, one of the true easterly aspects on the coast with its rocks, sea spray and the occasional silhouette of a brave soul prepared to stand on the sea wall. The green rock frog, which has sat for decades on the hill leading to Point Danger, waits expectantly for the day to dawn. The air here is 100 per cent pure salt. Glimpse behind you and the sun glints off the reflections of the Surfers Paradise high rises in the far distance like pure gold.

THE SPIT

On the most northern end, head to The Spit and stand on the jetty to watch the sun share her first few rays. You may even catch a prawn trawler or two making its way back into port through the choppy seaway.

TALLEBUDGERA

Dawn at Tallebudgera, water laps the oyster-encrusted pylons of Tally Creek Bridge. The creek itself, which normally gurgles with activity, is dead quiet at this hour, save for a lone Stand-Up paddler. A pair of discarded togs and some lost thongs lay casually in the sand. Walk parallel to the creek, past outrigger canoes which are lined up for the day ahead, and towards the sea wall where you can watch the sun rise over the ocean towards Currumbin Hill.

BURLEIGH HILL

It’s fish and chip hour at Burleigh Hill and the last stragglers are leaving the walking trails of Burleigh National Park. Perched 79 metres about Burleigh Beach, and with the lights of Surfers Paradise beginning to twinkle in the distance, this is a great place to watch the sunset. Sit on one of the timber benches fashioned as a surfboard and watch the sun set out west towards Nerang and Robina.

KIRRA LOOKOUT

Offering almost 360 degree views of the Coast, Kirra Lookout on Kirra Hill is punctuated by an elegant sea eagle sculpture, and is one of the best spots to catch both sunrise and sunset, as is the Captain Cook Memorial at Point Danger where you can take in sunrise to the east overlooking Snapper Rocks, and come sunset, look west towards the Northern NSW suburb of Tweed.

CURRUMBIN

High on the hill at Currumbin, the type of impossible incline that induces lactic acid in even the most experienced athletes, the sun sets magically over the Gold Coast Hinterland. At this hour, frilled lizards frolic up here, while down below in Currumbin Alley, surfers and paddlers squeeze the last out of the sun’s rays. For one of the most stunning sunrises on the coast, head to Currumbin’s Elephant Rock, home to the iconic annual Anzac Day dawn service. Climb the steep steps here and you’ll feel like you’re king of the world as the sun makes its daily debut.

MOONLIGHT CRAG

Up at Lamington National Park in the Gold Coast hinterland, the O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat team will take you to their secret sunset spot at Moonlight Crag. Offering one of the best sunsets on the coast, look over The McPherson Range – a spur of the Great Dividing Range – The Lost World, out towards Mt Barney and Mt Lindsay and down towards the Kerry Valley.

Sip on a Lona Sparkling Semillon – named after one of the O’Reilly sisters of yesteryear – and watch the fairy floss like sky transform into deep shades of pink and purple before the sun finally sighs goodbye for the day. Lona O’Reilly would have loved this, just as much as those surfers love the sunrise back at Snapper Rocks.

GC AQUA PARK AND GC WAKE PARK

Looking for something a little different? Hit the Gold Coast’s only inflatable water park filled with all sorts of obstacles over a 600-metre course you can climb, slip, bounce and launch yourself from. Sessions run hourly from 10am to 5pm every day and run over seven slip and sliding days of the week. The course is located right on the water at Broadwater Parklands opposite Australia Fair with a second equally epic GC Aqua Park located on the lake at Oxenford, right next door to GC Wake Park.

Speaking of GC Wake Park…when you want to step up your personal aqua game and maybe add a few aerial manoeuvres too, GC Wake Park will have you flying across the water in no time. Choose from skiing, wakeboarding or kneeboarding and bring the whole family, as anyone over the age of six is welcome to join in the fun. Kids under the age of 16 will need to be accompanied to the park with an adult and be able to ride independently.

CURRUMBIN WILDLIFE SANCTUARY WILD ISLAND ADVENTURE SPLASH ZONE

Things just got a little bit wilder at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary* with The Wild Island Adventure Splash Zone welcoming cool kids under the age of 12 to chill out over the warmer summer months. The new interactive, water-themed immersion zone is fitted out with refreshing water jets, trickling streams and waterfalls that will keep the little ones cool. There are also lots of shady spots for mum and dad to sit down and relax while kids play nearby, serving as a fitting finale to a great day-out following all that exploration of your favourite exhibits, animals and shows on offer at the Sanctuary.

You’ll find it located right next to Pelican Point not far from the entrance. It’s also inclusive of an adventure playground so kids can crawl, climb, balance and hide, as well as a fully-equipped parents room with private baby feeding room, active toddler play area, change tables and a kitchenette so families can recharge and refresh thoroughly before heading home.
