OceanXperience Brings Deep-Sea Discovery to Queensland Museum

OceanXperience
Become a Marine Scientist for the Day in Brisbane

Families visiting Brisbane this summer can swap the beach towel for a research vessel when OceanXperience arrives at Queensland Museum Kurilpa from 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027.

This immersive new experience invites visitors to step aboard a recreation of the OceanXplorer, the advanced research vessel featured in the National Geographic series OceanXplorers. Rather than simply looking at exhibits, visitors can take an active role in deep-sea exploration and discover how scientists investigate one of Earth’s least explored environments. Queensland Museum lists OceanXperience as opening on 4 December 2026.

Step Inside a Deep-Sea Research Mission

OceanXperience recreates key areas of the OceanXplorer, giving families the opportunity to explore Mission Control, the Bridge, Wet and Dry Labs and the Sub Hangar.

At Mission Control, visitors can discover how researchers plan and manage ocean expeditions. On the Bridge, they can experience what it is like to navigate a research vessel, while the Sub Hangar reveals the technology used to launch underwater exploration vehicles.

The Wet and Dry Labs demonstrate how samples and observations gathered during expeditions can become valuable scientific discoveries.

Explore the Technology Behind Ocean Discovery

OceanXperience
The experience showcases the combination of marine science, robotics, submersibles and advanced mapping technology used to investigate the deep ocean.

Real expedition footage and interactive activities help explain how modern ocean exploration is expanding knowledge about marine ecosystems and the creatures living far beneath the surface.

For children and teenagers with an interest in science, technology and the natural world, OceanXperience offers an engaging way to see how scientific research happens beyond the classroom.

An Educational Family Experience in Brisbane

OceanXperience is particularly suited to families looking for an educational attraction during the Queensland summer holidays.

The experience connects entertainment with science, encouraging visitors to consider the importance of understanding and protecting the world's oceans. Queensland Museum also operates SparkLab, an interactive science, technology, engineering and mathematics space aimed particularly at children aged 6 to 13, making the museum a strong destination for families interested in hands-on learning.

Located at South Bank, Queensland Museum Kurilpa is close to Brisbane's cultural precinct and can easily be incorporated into a family day exploring South Brisbane.

Plan Your OceanXperience Visit

OceanXperience
OceanXperience runs at Queensland Museum Kurilpa from Friday 4 December 2026 until Sunday 11 April 2027. Tickets and season passes are available through the Queensland Museum website.

For travellers visiting Brisbane, the exhibition provides an opportunity to experience the excitement of ocean exploration without leaving the city.

Whether steering from the Bridge, exploring Mission Control or discovering the science behind deep-sea technology, OceanXperience promises a fascinating journey into the world's largest and least explored ecosystem.

Looking for something different to do with the family during the Queensland school holidays? Brisbane's Gallery of Modern Art is offering children and adults the chance to step into the colourful, imaginative world of Jim Henson.

Make, Believe, Magic: The Worlds of The Jim Henson Company is an exclusive-to-Brisbane exhibition celebrating 70 years of creativity, puppetry and storytelling. Running at GOMA from 12 September 2026 until 18 April 2027, the exhibition brings together much-loved characters, creatures, costumes, props and sets from some of the world's most memorable productions.

Meet the Characters Behind the Magic

Families can discover the creative worlds of Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, The Muppets, The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth through an immersive exhibition that explores how Jim Henson and his creative team brought extraordinary characters to life.

Among the instantly recognisable favourites are Sesame Street characters including Elmo and Cookie Monster, while fans of Fraggle Rock can see the Great Hall set from Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock in a world-first exhibition experience.

The exhibition features hundreds of objects, including practical puppets, animatronic creatures, props, costumes, original drawings and moving-image clips, providing an insight into the craftsmanship behind the productions.

Make Your Own Puppet During the School Holidays

Make, Believe, Magic
One of the highlights for younger visitors is The Sock Puppet Studio, a hands-on activity running daily from 10.00am to 3.30pm during Queensland state school holidays.

Children can use simple materials including socks, pipe cleaners and yarn to create their own character. They can then become performers themselves, learning puppetry techniques and recording a lip-sync performance inspired by the work of The Jim Henson Company.

The activity is suitable for all ages and abilities, with no previous puppetry experience required. The finished puppets remain at GOMA so the materials can be reused by other young creators.

Free Family Film Screenings

The Jim Henson experience continues beyond the exhibition galleries with three free cinema programs at GOMA's Australian Cinémathèque.

Screened to be Believed: The Jim Henson Company, Where the Wild Things Are Made: Jim Henson's Creature Shop and Beyond Henson: Puppetry and World Cinema explore the extraordinary relationship between puppetry, filmmaking and visual storytelling. The programs include more than 90 films and are scheduled throughout the exhibition season.

A School Holiday Experience for the Whole Family

Make, Believe, Magic
With colourful characters, behind-the-scenes creations, hands-on making and free film programs, Make, Believe, Magic offers families an opportunity to discover how imagination, craftsmanship and technology combine to create memorable worlds.

Five More Things Not to Miss at the New Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

Robert Flaherty Theater Photo by Lou Caltabiano
Los Angeles is welcoming a major new cultural attraction when the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opens its 11-acre campus in Exposition Park on September 22, 2026.

Founded by filmmaker George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is dedicated to visual storytelling and myth-making. Its collections span centuries and cultures, bringing together art, film, books, comics and other forms of popular culture.

For travellers visiting Los Angeles, here are five things not to miss at the new Lucas Museum.

1. Watch a Film at the Robert Flaherty Theater

The Lucas Museum will feature two theatres where visitors can enjoy films throughout the day. The Robert Flaherty Theater is named after pioneering documentary filmmaker Robert Flaherty and will concentrate on documentary cinema.

Programmes may include Seeing Is Believing: The Story of Narrative Art, a new series commissioned by the Lucas Museum, alongside documentaries about artists represented in the museum's collections. Other screenings include The Power of Film and Comic Book Confidential.

The theatres provide an opportunity to combine a museum visit with an engaging cinema experience.

2. Explore the Lucas Museum Library

With floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and views across the museum's park and gardens, the Lucas Museum library is an impressive space for anyone interested in storytelling.

Its collections include children's books, comics, magazines, science fiction and fantasy books. While access to the research collections is available to approved researchers by appointment, the library adds another dimension to the museum's exploration of visual culture.

3. Discover the Slavko Vorkapich Theater

The second theatre celebrates innovative short films, experimental cinema and the history of filmmaking.

Named after filmmaker Slavko Vorkapich, known for his montage sequences and special effects, the theatre will present innovative short films from past and present.

Works associated with Georges Méliès, Man Ray, Walt Disney, Dave and Max Fleischer and Kenneth Anger are among the material represented. Visitors may also have an opportunity to discover early student films made by George Lucas.

4. See the Individual Artist Exhibitions

The Lucas Museum is not solely about film and popular culture. Several opening exhibitions spotlight individual artists and their distinctive approaches to visual storytelling.

Artists represented include Thomas Hart Benton, Frank Frazetta, Jessie Wilcox Smith, Maxfield Parrish, Norman Rockwell and N.C. Wyeth.

These exhibitions provide visitors with an opportunity to explore how artists have used images to communicate characters, ideas, emotions and stories.

5. Explore Comics and Manga Art

Comics and manga are among the most exciting areas of the museum's opening programme. One exhibition explores comics and graphic storytelling, while another focuses on manga.

The comics gallery includes American favourite Peanuts, underground artist R. Crumb and French masters Mœbius and Philippe Druillet.

The manga gallery celebrates Japanese visual storytelling with works connected with popular series including Astro Boy, Akira and One Piece. It promises to be a highlight for fans of comics, Japanese culture and graphic art.

A New Must-See Los Angeles Attraction

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art offers a fresh perspective on the way stories are created and shared. With its theatres, library and diverse exhibitions, it provides visitors with experiences extending well beyond a traditional art museum.

Located in Exposition Park, the museum is set to become one of Los Angeles' exciting new cultural attractions from September 2026. Visitors should plan ahead and make reservations before exploring this new destination for art, film and storytelling.

From Star Wars production art and costumes to works by Banksy, Norman Rockwell and Frida Kahlo, the museum offers visitors a fascinating journey through visual storytelling.

The 11-acre museum campus is set to become a major Los Angeles attraction for art lovers, film fans, families and visitors seeking something different from the city's traditional museums.

For Star Wars fans, the Lucas Archives will be a major highlight. The collection features props, artwork and artefacts associated with the first six Star Wars films and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

2. Step Into Star Wars in Motion

Star Wars in Motion
The museum's inaugural cinema exhibition, Star Wars in Motion, explores the development of the Star Wars universe from the original 1977 film through the prequel trilogy.

3. Explore More Than 1,200 Works

A new work from Banksy
The museum opens with more than 1,200 works of narrative art displayed across more than 30 galleries and approximately 100,000 square feet.

The collection stretches across centuries and cultures, with galleries organised around themes and subjects. 5. Dine at Skywalker Grill

Skywalker Grill
Skywalker Grill offers visitors a chance to enjoy a meal without leaving the museum campus. Located on the museum's upper level, the full-service restaurant draws inspiration from George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch.

The menu puts creative twists on American classics, including lobster corn dogs and Skywalker Ranch wagyu burgers. Skywalker Grill is open to museum visitors and the general public from September 22, with reservations available through Resy.

A New Must-See Los Angeles Attraction

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is much more than a museum dedicated to Star Wars. Its collection brings together fine art, illustration, film, comics, photography and popular culture to examine how stories shape the way people understand the world.

With its galleries, cinemas, gardens, restaurant and extensive collection, the new Lucas Museum is set to become one of the most anticipated cultural attractions in Los Angeles.

Tamworth Powerstation Museum: A Nostalgic Journey Through the Electrical Appliances of My Childhood

Tamworth Powerstation Museum
A Personal Visit to Tamworth’s City of Light

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the Tamworth Powerstation Museum in Tamworth, New South Wales, and it proved to be a fascinating and educational travel experience. For anyone interested in Australian history, technology, heritage or the everyday objects of the past, this unique museum offers an engaging glimpse into how electricity transformed life in Tamworth and beyond.

What makes the museum particularly special is its connection with Tamworth’s place in Australian history. In 1888, Tamworth became the first town in Australia to be lit by municipal electric street lighting. The museum stands on the historic site where the steam engines powered that early street-lighting system.

Stepping Back Into Everyday Life

As I explored the museum, I was particularly interested in the collection of old electrical appliances and household items. I saw old televisions, vacuum cleaners, jugs and a fascinating variety of light bulbs.

Seeing these objects in person made me realise just how dramatically household technology has changed. Modern televisions are slim and lightweight, vacuum cleaners are designed with convenience in mind, and electric jugs have become an everyday kitchen essential. The older appliances were often much larger and had very different designs from the products we use today.

For me, these displays were more than just old objects. They provided a fascinating connection with the everyday lives of previous generations and showed how electrical technology gradually became part of Australian homes.

From Light Bulbs to Modern Technology

Tamworth Powerstation Museum
The collection of different light bulbs was another highlight of my visit. Something as simple as a light bulb has undergone significant technological development, and seeing different examples together made that progression much easier to appreciate.

The museum's collection covers the history and social impact of electricity, including household appliances, industrial equipment and developments in electrical science and design. The collection contains approximately 9,500 objects of historical, cultural and social significance.

The visit also made me reflect on how dependent we are on electricity today. We use it for lighting, cooking, cleaning, entertainment, communication and countless other activities. It is easy to take this convenience for granted until we see how different everyday life was before modern electrical technology became widespread.

A Memorable Tamworth Travel Experience

Tamworth Powerstation Museum
My visit to the Tamworth Powerstation Museum was enjoyable, informative and memorable. Rather than simply reading about technological history, I could see actual objects and understand how electrical innovation influenced ordinary people's lives.

The museum is also home to two John Fowler steam-driven engines, which are working replicas associated with the beginnings of Tamworth's electric street lighting. Visitors can experience the engines operating at selected times during the year.

I would recommend adding the Tamworth Powerstation Museum to a Tamworth travel itinerary, particularly for visitors interested in Australian heritage, science, technology and local history. It is a reminder that some of the biggest changes in history can begin with something as familiar as switching on a light.

Plan Your Visit

The museum is currently open Wednesday to Saturday from 9am to 1pm. It is located at 216 Peel Street, Tamworth, NSW 2340.

Step Into the Frozen World of Antarctica at Canberra's Must-See Winter Exhibition

Antarctica Exhibition
Experience the Wonders of Antarctica Without Leaving Australia

This winter, visitors to Canberra have the rare opportunity to journey to one of the world's most remote and fascinating places without setting foot on an icebreaker. The National Museum of Australia (NMA) is presenting its spectacular new Antarctica Exhibition, running from 1 July until October, offering an immersive adventure into the frozen continent that has captivated explorers, scientists and adventurers for more than a century.

Combining remarkable historical artefacts, interactive experiences, stunning visual displays and fascinating stories of Australian exploration, this major exhibition is one of the capital's standout attractions for 2026. Best of all, general admission is free, with optional paid experiences available for visitors wanting to delve even deeper into the Antarctic experience.

More Than a Century of Australian Antarctic Exploration

Australia has a long and proud history of Antarctic exploration, scientific research and environmental stewardship. The exhibition traces more than 100 years of extraordinary expeditions, from the courageous early explorers who ventured into the unknown to today's dedicated researchers working in some of the harshest conditions on Earth.

Visitors will discover inspiring first-hand stories from expeditioners who have lived and worked at Australia's Antarctic research stations, including the iconic Mawson Station and Macquarie Island. Their personal experiences reveal the challenges, triumphs and resilience required to survive and conduct vital scientific research in one of the planet's most extreme environments.

One of the exhibition's highlights is the public display of rare objects from one of the world's largest Antarctic collections. Many of these remarkable artefacts are being exhibited for the first time since their acquisition from the Australian Antarctic Division, providing an extraordinary glimpse into Australia's polar heritage.

Meet Antarctica's Extraordinary Wildlife

Antarctica Exhibition
No visit to Antarctica would be complete without encountering its incredible wildlife.

The exhibition introduces visitors to some of the continent's most famous inhabitants, including playful penguins, hardworking sled dogs and other remarkable animals that have become symbols of life in the frozen south.

Through engaging displays and educational presentations, visitors gain a deeper understanding of how these animals have adapted to survive one of the world's most unforgiving climates and the important role they play within Antarctica's fragile ecosystem.

Immerse Yourself in the Antarctic Environment

The Antarctica Exhibition goes far beyond traditional museum displays by creating a truly immersive experience.

Witness the magical beauty of the aurora australis dancing across the southern skies. Feel the power of an Antarctic blizzard as dramatic multimedia presentations recreate the force of nature experienced by expedition teams. Follow the unique rhythm of the midnight sun and discover what life is like when daylight never seems to end.

Interactive experiences invite visitors to test their own problem-solving skills, including a fun communications code game that challenges participants to stay connected with family and colleagues in one of the world's most isolated environments.

The combination of cutting-edge technology and authentic storytelling brings the Antarctic landscape vividly to life.

Engineering for the World's Harshest Conditions

Antarctica Exhibition
The exhibition also showcases the incredible ingenuity behind Antarctic exploration.

Visitors can examine specialised vehicles, scientific instruments and equipment that have been carefully modified to operate in freezing temperatures, fierce winds and constantly changing ice conditions.

These remarkable innovations demonstrate the determination and resourcefulness that continue to support Australia's scientific research program on the frozen continent.

Why Antarctica Matters More Than Ever

Beyond its breathtaking scenery and adventurous history, Antarctica plays a critical role in understanding Earth's changing climate and protecting the planet's future.

The exhibition encourages visitors to reflect on the importance of preserving this extraordinary environment while highlighting Australia's ongoing commitment to scientific research and environmental conservation.

By the end of the exhibition, visitors leave with a greater appreciation of why Antarctica continues to inspire generations of Australians and why safeguarding this pristine wilderness remains one of our greatest global responsibilities.

An Unmissable Winter Attraction in Canberra

Whether you are passionate about history, fascinated by exploration, interested in science or simply looking for an outstanding family day out, the Antarctica Exhibition offers an unforgettable experience.

Few stars have left a mark on popular culture quite like Marilyn Monroe. More than six decades after her passing, the Hollywood icon continues to captivate audiences around the world with her timeless beauty, unforgettable films and enduring mystery.

With the opening of the major exhibition Marilyn Monroe: Hollywood Icon at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, there has never been a better time to explore the Los Angeles locations that shaped the life and legacy of one of cinema’s most beloved stars.

Born as Norma Jeane Mortenson in Los Angeles on 1 June 1926, Marilyn Monroe rose from humble beginnings to become one of the biggest movie stars of the twentieth century. Today, visitors can follow in her footsteps across Hollywood and West Hollywood, discovering the hotels, landmarks and museums that preserve her remarkable story.

1) A New Exhibition Celebrates a Hollywood Legend

Opening on 31 May 2026 and running through February 2027, Marilyn Monroe: Hollywood Icon at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures offers a rare opportunity to explore the life and career of the legendary actress.

The exhibition showcases costumes, personal belongings, original artefacts and memorabilia, including items being displayed publicly for the first time. Film lovers can gain a deeper understanding of Monroe’s extraordinary journey from aspiring model to global superstar.

The exhibition serves as the perfect starting point for a Marilyn Monroe-inspired tour of Los Angeles.

2) The Hollywood Roosevelt: Where a Star Was Born

Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel
One of the most significant locations in Marilyn Monroe’s early career is the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

Located on Hollywood Boulevard, the landmark hotel became Monroe’s home for two years as her modelling career began to flourish. It was here that she participated in her first professional magazine photo shoot beside the hotel's famous Tropicana Pool, a location that remains one of Hollywood’s most photographed swimming pools.

Today, visitors can stay in the luxurious Marilyn Monroe Suite, which overlooks the pool and pays tribute to the actress who once called the hotel home. The Roosevelt remains one of the most iconic places in Los Angeles for fans wishing to experience a piece of Hollywood history.

3) Explore One of the World's Greatest Marilyn Collections

For travellers interested in movie history, the Hollywood Museum offers one of the most extensive collections of Marilyn Monroe memorabilia anywhere in the world.

Located in the historic Max Factor Building, the museum houses thousands of artefacts spanning more than a century of Hollywood history. It was in Max Factor’s famous make-up rooms that Norma Jeane transformed into the glamorous blonde who would become Marilyn Monroe.

Visitors can view an extraordinary collection of personal possessions, costumes, photographs and even Monroe’s limousine. Among the museum’s most treasured exhibits is the dress she wore during her honeymoon with baseball legend Joe DiMaggio and later during her famous tour entertaining American troops in Korea.

The museum provides fascinating insight into both Monroe’s personal life and her extraordinary career.

4) Leave Your Handprints Beside Hollywood Royalty

Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell
A visit to Los Angeles would not be complete without stopping at the world-famous Forecourt of the Stars at the TCL Chinese Theatre.

Following the success of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes in 1953, Marilyn Monroe and her co-star Jane Russell were invited to leave their handprints, footprints and signatures in cement outside the theatre.

The preserved prints remain one of the most photographed attractions in Hollywood and provide visitors with a tangible connection to one of cinema’s golden eras. Standing beside Monroe’s handprints offers fans a unique opportunity to reflect on the immense impact she continues to have on popular culture.

Stay in Marilyn’s Former Cottage at The Charlie Hotel

Hidden among the leafy streets of West Hollywood lies one of the city’s most charming and lesser-known Marilyn Monroe landmarks.

The Charlie Hotel was originally developed by legendary silent film star Charlie Chaplin as accommodation for friends and fellow performers. Over the years, an impressive list of Hollywood legends stayed in the cottages, including Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Bette Davis and Clark Gable.

Today, visitors can stay in the beautifully restored Marilyn Cottage, where Monroe lived during the 1940s. The elegant bungalow combines historic charm with modern comforts, offering a unique and intimate glimpse into the actress’s early years before worldwide fame arrived.
