Opera Australia announced that for the first time in its history, Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour (HOSH) will add an extra week to its annual four-week season in response to the huge demand for tickets for the record-breaking The Phantom of the Opera, opening 27 March next year. 

Kicking off the iconic musical’s 40th anniversary global celebrations in 2026, the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour production will now run until Sunday 3 May. 

The Phantom of the Opera harbour spectacular premiered in 2022 and became the highest grossing Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour production in the event’s history. 

 years later it’s proving more popular than ever with 2026 advance sales soaring well above expectations, five months out from opening night. 

Directed by Australia’s master of musical theatre, Simon Phillips, with audacious costumes and sets by Gabriela Tylesova and choreography by Simone Sault, the outdoor staging brings a whole new level of spectacle to this legendary musical’s defining moments – the mirror, the journey to the Phantom’s lair and the chandelier – on an enormous stage built over Sydney Harbour.

Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to attend Guys & Dolls at the Handa Opera on the Harbour in Sydney, and let me tell you, it was an evening to remember. From the stunning setting to the exceptional performances and even the spectacular details, the show was an absolute delight. 

Guys & Dolls is a beloved American musical that first premiered on Broadway in 1950. The story is set in the vibrant underworld of New York City, where gamblers and showgirls navigate love and luck. The Broadway production was an immediate success, running for over 1,200 performances. In 1955, it was adapted into a film starring Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, and Frank Sinatra, which brought the musical to an even wider audience. Sinatra’s portrayal of the charming gambler Nathan Detroit and the vibrant settings made the movie a classic. With its timeless appeal, Guys & Dolls has remained a staple of musical theater and continues to captivate audiences worldwide, both on stage and on screen.

I’ll admit, I was initially unsure about how Guys & Dolls would translate in this year’s production, but I was pleasantly surprised by how captivating it was. There were so many standout features that made this performance truly remarkable. From the stunning setting by Sydney Harbour to the electric performances, everything came together perfectly. In fact, here are seven things I particularly loved about this year’s production, each of which added a unique and unforgettable layer to the experience.

1) The Setting: Sydney's Iconic Backdrop

First and foremost, the setting of Guys & Dolls is truly one of the most magical aspects of the production. With the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House lighting up the background, it felt like the show was part of something bigger — the entire city was alive with energy. The setting framed the performance perfectly, with the iconic skyline serving as an inspiring backdrop for this classic Broadway musical.

2) The Music: An Orchestra Above the Stage

The music itself was absolutely fantastic. Unlike previous years, where the orchestra was hidden under the stage, this time the musicians were perched high above the rear of the stage on scaffolding. It was a brilliant choice, as it not only allowed the orchestra to be partially seen but also created a more immersive experience for the audience. The sound felt fuller, richer, and more connected to the production as a whole. The orchestra really brought the music to life, especially during the big, lively numbers.

3) The Singers: Stellar Performances from the Leads

The lead performances were nothing short of remarkable. Adam Garcia as Sky Masterson exuded charm and elegance, his rich voice filling the theatre with every note. His rendition of "Luck Be a Lady" was a crowd favorite, capturing both the drama and energy of the song. Elise McCann as Sarah Brown was equally captivating. Her performance of "If I Were a Bell" showcased her vocal talent and emotional depth, bringing a genuine warmth to her character. Stephen Mahy as Nathan Detroit and Natalie Gamsu as Miss Adelaide were the perfect comedic pair, their duets like "Sue Me" full of humor and musical flair.

4) The Dancing: High-Energy Choreography

The combination of sharp, high-energy moves and smooth, jazzy sequences had everyone in the audience tapping their feet and clapping along.

As the action built to a crescendo, a burst of color and light erupted over Sydney Harbour, lighting up the sky. The explosion of light perfectly matched the vibrant energy of the musical, leaving the audience in awe as the stunning fireworks mirrored the dynamic spirit of the show. It was a thrilling moment that added a real sense of spectacle to the evening.

Guys & Dolls announced for Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour 2025

One of the finest Broadway musicals ever written explodes to life in a brand-new production.

Opera Australia today announced a new production of the iconic musical Guys & Dolls for Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour in 2025, that will transport audiences to 1950’s Manhattan, a colourful and glamorous world filled with showgirls and gangsters, set against Sydney’s glittering skyline.

Guys & Dolls is one of the finest musicals ever written, from its premiere on Broadway in 1950, winning five Tony Awards including Best Musical, the adaptation to a Hollywood film in 1955 starring Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando, to its most recent smash-hit revival on the West End, this musical is filled to the brim with toe-tapping tunes, high-energy, vibrant dance numbers and plenty of laughs.

Breathing fresh new life into this classic musical will be OA’s Artistic Director Jo Davies, who will direct the high-octane production atop a new set designed by Brian Thomson, whose previous Handa Opera on the Harbour credits include La Traviata, Carmen and West Side Story.

The iconic location and a stage that is two and half times larger than any other in the country, presents a huge creative opportunity for a production like Guys & Dolls says director Jo Davies, who will be drawing on her extensive experience directing large scale opera and musicals in unique locations around the world.

“Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour is so magical, just the walk through the venue to reach your seat creates such a sense of anticipation. I’m thrilled to be bringing a beloved musical like Guys & Dolls, with its wild ensemble dance numbers and brilliantly sharp comedy to this incredible stage.

50th Birthday Open House Weekend | 20-22 October

Our Open House Weekend is set for success, with all tickets sold out. On Saturday and Sunday, access to the site will be limited for non-ticket holders to the lower concourse level between 8am - 5pm, the full site will reopen after. 

House Canteen and Opera Bar can be accessed by the southern escalators to the lower concourse and are open to non-ticket holders all day, including a celebratory 'gold party' starting at 4pm.

 
For travellers visiting Sydney, there are plenty of events for them to enjoy over the weekend during the evening.

This includes ICON, a laser art show shining from across the harbour to illuminate the sails each night from sunset.

Whispers, by Quandamooka artist Megan Cope, which features 3 different installations around Sydney Opera House, is proving a popular public artwork and can be enjoyed everyday until 31 October.

Opera Australia has announced that smash-hit musical West Side Story will return to the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour stage in 2024, following renewed partnerships with Dr Haruhisa Handa’s International Foundation for Arts and Culture and Destination NSW. 

The 2019 production of West Side Story remains the most successful of all Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour productions. 

It attracted record audience numbers, selling more than 65,000 tickets.

Opera Australia (OA) has announced that smash-hit musical West Side Story will return to the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour stage in 2024, along with renewed partnerships with Dr Haruhisa Handa’s International Foundation for Arts and Culture and Destination NSW.

This electrifying, larger-than-life production of West Side Story opened in 2019 to rapturous acclaim and remains the most successful of all Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour productions, having attracted record audience numbers, selling more than 65,000 tickets.

The monumental stage, vibrant costumes and a brilliant cast of singers and dancers will all return to Mrs Macquaries Point where unmatched views of Sydney’s famous skyline and a nightly fireworks display make Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour one of world’s most exciting theatrical experiences.

Directed by Francesca Zambello, West Side Story brings a slice of New York City to Sydney Harbour with iconic song and dance numbers, thrilling audiences for a limited four week season. Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim’s musical masterpiece will ring out across the Harbour and Jerome Robbins’ famed choreography will once again ignite the over-water stage.

OA CEO Fiona Allan welcomed the renewed commitment from the event’s long-standing partners.

Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour is Sydney's most lavish annual event. With spectacular live performances, an unbeatable view and al fresco dining, this is everything Sydney does best.

In 2023, our acclaimed production of Puccini's heart-breaking Madama Butterfly returns to the harbour-top stage. Here are just some of the extraordinary facts behind this ambitious production.

1. The pop-up site is built in about 25 days.

The bulk of the construction happens in the first 15 days. During this time surf lifesavers keep an eye over the water activities of the workers and staff. On day 15, the cast and creatives begin on-stage rehearsals while the finishing touches are added. That's pretty fast for a site that includes 5 restaurants, 3,000 seats, and a huge stage more than twice the size of any indoor stage in Australia.

2. There giant sun which inflates over the water is 12 metres in diameter.

There is also a glowing moon which appears on stage, measuring six metres in diameter. And you'll see two cars and a speed boat as part of the performance.

3. 75 musicians in the Opera Australia Orchestra perform from a custom built studio directly beneath the stage lovingly named the “underworld”.

The orchestra pit in the "underworld" is 120m2 and there are 2 air conditioning units running at all times to keep it at a suitable temperature for care of the instruments. The conductor maintains contact with the singers via in-ear monitors and video screens.

4. There are 600 lights used throughout the pop-up site including 1km of festooning.

This includes 140 moving lights and 6 follow-spots. The stage and venue are powered by 65 kilometres of power, data and audio cable.

5. 71 people perform in the cast, including 20 principals and 51 ensemble members.

A cast of this size is necessary to fill the stage, which is almost two and a half times larger than any Australian indoor stage. Throughout the performance, the harbour-top stage is accessed by a floating walkway.

6. The costumes took combined 1,920 man-hours to create.

There are also 24 wigs, and a body stocking made to resemble a full-body tattoo, which Cio-Cio-San wears under her kimono.

7. Approximately 330 people work on the site at each performance.

From cast to musicians, dressers, makeup artists, stagehands, bar staff, chefs: there's a huge team of people required to make each night truly magical.

8. The rubber floor tiles used across the venue are composed of up-cycled rubber tyres which would have otherwise been burned or sent to landfill.

Other sustainable practices include using 75 metres of recycled signage from previous events as waterproofing for walk ways, producing printed materials on recycled paper, choosing biodegradable and environmentally friendly packaging, and hiring bio-diesel generators to support the power requirements for the event.

9. Over 26 performances, audience members enjoy almost 21,000 glasses of sparkling wine. Cheers to that!

Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour is Sydney's most lavish annual event. With spectacular live performances, an unbeatable view and al fresco dining, this is everything Sydney does best.
In 2022, Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical masterpiece, The Phantom of the Opera, takes centre stage. 

Here are just some of the extraordinary facts behind this once-in-a-lifetime production.

1. The pop-up site is built in about 25 days.
The bulk of the construction happens in the first 15 days. During this time surf lifesavers keep an eye over the water activities of the workers and staff. On day 15, the cast and creatives begin on-stage rehearsals while the finishing touches are added. That's pretty fast for a site that includes 5 restaurants, 3,000 seats, and a huge stage more than twice the size of any indoor stage in Australia.

2. There's over 10km of gold foil used on the set, and more than 100 workshop staff involved in construction
While the details of designer Gabriela Tylesova's stage are a closely guarded secret, we can reveal that the set is so large it's been constructed across four separate workshops. It will also glitter magnificently, with almost all of the stage surfaces covered in gold foil.

3. 27 musicians in the Opera Australia Orchestra perform from a custom built studio directly beneath the stage lovingly named the “underworld”.
The orchestra pit in the "underworld" is 120m2and there are 2 air conditioning units running at all times to keep it at a suitable temperature for care of the instruments. The conductor maintains contact with the singers via in-ear monitors and video screens.

This is on top of the 220 costumes, which use thousands and thousands of metres of trim. More than 50 members of our wardrobe team have helped construct these fabulous clothes.
