P&O Cruises Returns to Noumea as Cruising Resumes in New Caledonia

The resumption of cruising in the South Pacific is gaining momentum, with P&O Cruises Australia’s Pacific Explorer today becoming the first cruise ship to return to New Caledonia.

Pacific Explorer sailed into Noumea this morning for a historic overnight stay following the reopening of New Caledonia’s maritime borders to cruise tourism.

The call is the latest in a series of milestones for P&O’s flagship, which was the first cruise ship to return to Australia in April this year, as well as the first ship to visit New Zealand and Fiji in August.

Speaking in Noumea after the ship’s arrival, President of Carnival Australia and P&O Cruises Australia Marguerite Fitzgerald said the cruise company was excited to see New Caledonia reopening to cruise tourism.

“P&O Cruises has been sailing to New Caledonia for many decades, and so we are thrilled to return to this beautiful nation,” Ms Fitzgerald said.

“Cruise tourism makes an important economic contribution to the island nations of the South Pacific, and we are looking forward to renewing our partnerships with the governments, businesses and communities of New Caledonia and strengthening them even further as our ships call once again.”

Ships from across Carnival Australia’s family of brands will make more than 20 visits to New Caledonia over the remainder of 2022, with more than 150 calls scheduled for 2023.

Ms Fitzgerald said Pacific Explorer’s overnight stay was an exciting development.

“New Caledonia has always been one of our guests’ favourite destinations, so we’re keen to give them even more opportunity to explore its offerings, including Noumea’s exciting new Quai Ferry development beside the cruise terminal.”

Ms Fitzgerald said Carnival Australia’s cruise lines were also looking at scheduling longer days in Noumea when their ships visited, an initiative made possible with the recent opening of the new Brisbane International Cruise Terminal.

“Thanks to the location and the design of the new Brisbane terminal, we can now reach Noumea faster than we used to, so we can spend more time visiting the city,” she said. “That’s a real win-win development for New Caledonia and for our guests.”

New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Tahiti tourism bodies throw support behind South Pacific Travel Bubble

This week, the Australia and New Zealand representatives of New Caledonia Tourism, Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority, Tourism Solomons and Tahiti Tourisme formed a working group to help the proposed South Pacific Travel Bubble, or Trans-Pacific Bubble become a reality. The group’s objective is to forge collaboration and positive discussion between the national governments of the South Pacific, Australia and New Zealand, as well as relevant stakeholders throughout the region, and demonstrate there’s a strong appetite from the tourism industries in these countries/territories for a South Pacific Travel Bubble.

A formal letter was submitted by the group to the offices of both the Australian and New Zealand Prime Ministers, outlining the benefits of including the Pacific nations in a regional travel bubble, including:
  • Tourism has a positive impact on the livelihoods of many in the South Pacific, not only from a direct economic benefit standpoint, but also in its ability to unite communities, encourage the preservation of indigenous culture, and place a greater focus on environmental protection. It offers the widest-reaching and fairest economic spread to businesses and communities
  • For some of the countries/territories listed, tourism is the number one industry for employment whilst for others it is a high-growth economic driver that is helping aide-reliant countries gain financial independence
  • For all the countries/territories listed, Australia and New Zealand represent the most important inbound markets and one of the highest sources of visitor arrivals. This not only provides benefit to the countries/territories in the group, but also job security for the tens of thousands of Australians and thousands of New Zealanders that work in travel and tourism and rely on outbound travel for job security
  • Reopening borders with Australia and New Zealand’s South Pacific neighbours and allowing their tourism industries to reboot is undoubtedly the fastest and most effective way Australia and New Zealand can help

The group also outlined in its letter that there have only been 88 cases of COVID-19 and zero deaths in New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Tahiti combined, and that they recognise any proposal for a reopening of international borders would require considerable planning and negotiation between various government bodies, along with strict control measures and enhanced health monitoring.

Andrew Cavallaro, Australian / New Zealand Market Representative, Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority, said of the group’s lobbying, “Tourism is a vitally important source of employment and economic driver for our South Pacific neighbours, all of whom are heavily reliant on Australian and New Zealand visitors for their survival. We play a pivotal role in helping these Pacific islands find their feet again following the devastating impacts of COVID-19 and opening borders to establish a South Pacific bubble is undoubtedly the fastest and most effective means to helping them reboot."

"With the aim of prompting and quickly progressing these conversations at a government level, we have established a collaborative working group of South Pacific tourism boards to lobby for a South Pacific Bubble akin to the proposed Trans-Tasman Bubble currently being discussed. We hope that by submitting letters of endorsement to the Prime Ministers of Australia and New Zealand, and to both government’s Foreign Affairs and Pacific ministers, that consideration is given for a reopening of borders between Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific as soon as is safe and practicable.”

Caroline Brunel, Account Director, Tahiti Tourisme, Australia and New Zealand, echoed Andrew’s sentiments. “The concept of a South Pacific bubble is of great importance to many people - and not just those desperate to get back to a tropical island, which I think many of us are dreaming of right now! Tens of thousands of Australians rely on outbound travel for their jobs, and tourism is the life blood of entire nations in the South Pacific,” she said.

"Collectively, the nations of the South Pacific have done an incredible job of flattening their respective COVID curves, if not eradicating the virus all together. We want to work together to facilitate safe travel wherever we can, and the concept of an inclusive bubble is one that works. We are coming together to keep the conversation going, and to assist wherever we can to make a South Pacific Bubble a reality.”

Sally Pepermans, Director, New Caledonia Tourism, New Zealand, added, “It’s great to see these four nations coming together and facilitating discussion on a South Pacific travel bubble. Opening travel between New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific will have resounding benefits to the economies and people of New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Tahiti. We are committed to working together to foster a safe environment for travel so borders can reopen. We are here, we are ready to talk and most importantly we are ready to welcome our neighbours from New Zealand and Australia again as soon as possible.”

Andrew, Caroline and Sally are available for further comment upon request. High res images of the destinations can be accessed here.

IHG makes its grand entrance into New Caledonia with three hotel signings

IHG will make a grand entrance into New Caledonia with the signing of three hotels that will open between 2021 and 2024, bringing the world’s biggest and best hotel brands to the region.

The new-build InterContinental® Lifou Wadra Bay Resort will be a 50-room luxury hotel located on the scenic Lifou, the largest island of the Loyalty Islands. Designed by both local architect, Atelier 13, and renowned interior designer, Chada, the resort is already under construction and will open in November 2021, featuring luxurious rooms, lagoon-front suites, all-day dining, a fine dining restaurant and bar, along with a gym, spa and an outdoor pool.

Hotel Paradis d’Ouvéa will convert to Holiday Inn® Resort Ouvéa in November 2021 following a full refurbishment, bringing it to life as the highest quality accommodation offering available on the island. Located on the beachfront at the picturesque Mouli Beach on the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ouvéa Island, the 34-room resort will offer all-day dinning, a bar and an outdoor pool, not to mention stunning views of the lagoon with its endless shades of turquoise.

Holiday Inn Resort Lifou will convert from the current Hotel Drehu Village in 2024, following an extensive refurbishment program. The 30-room beachfront resort is located in the heart of Lifou Island’s town centre of Wé and will offer direct beach access to the magnificent, sandy Bay of Chateaubriand. Once it rebrands, it will offer all-day dining and bar, as well as an outdoor swimming pool.

Abhijay Sandilya, IHG’s Vice President of Development – Australasia, Japan & Pacific, said: “What an exciting time for IHG as we make our foray into New Caledonia with the signing of three amazing hotels. The Loyalty Islands currently have no international hotel brand so bringing the world’s largest hotel brand family, Holiday Inn, and the world’s largest luxury hotel brand, InterContinental, to the islands will boost the territory’s global profile and give us a fantastic opportunity to offer IHG guests a unique New Caledonian tourism experience. We are proud to work with the owner of these properties to deliver spectacular and inspiring island hospitality.”

The InterContinental and Holiday Inns in Lifou and Ouvéa are all part of a long-term management agreement with owner Société de développement et d'investissement des Îles Loyauté (SODIL), a government organisation of the Loyalty Islands Province, one of three administrative subdivisions of New Caledonia.

William Ihage, General Manager of SODIL commented: “The Travel and Tourism sector is growing twice as fast as the world economy and supports one in ten jobs[1], making it a true growth engine. New Caledonia is an aspirational destination for travellers from around the world, and visitor arrivals are on an upwards trajectory. In fact, in 2017, more than 120,000 tourists and 493,000 cruise ship passengers visited New Caledonia, and we’ve seen a large increase in the number of Australian, New Zealand and Japanese tourists, as well as continued visitors from France.”

“We know that IHG is a fantastic partner to bring our hotels to life, given their experience in operating amazing luxury properties in the surrounding Pacific islands, such as Fiji, Vanuatu and French Polynesia, as well as a significant presence across several of New Caledonia’s key inbound markets, including France, Australia, Japan and New Zealand.”

Several airlines, including New Caledonia’s own Aircalin, Qantas, Air New Zealand and Air Vanuatu operate frequent New Caledonia flights to Nouméa’s La Tontouta International Airport departing from several Australian and New Zealand cities.

IHG currently has 51 hotels operating under four brands in Australasia, including: InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, voco and Holiday Inn Express, with another 35 in the pipeline, including Hotel Indigo.

Flight Centre's Top 10 Destinations for 2016

Destinations that dominated the headlines for all the wrong reasons in 2015 are now considered to be the must visit hotspots for travellers in 2016.

From Bali, to Greece and some home grown favourites like the Northern Territory, Flight Centre's team of experts has issued a medley of 10 must-visit destinations for 2016.

Flight Centre's head of leisure travel Tom Walley said the top 10 destinations for 2016 have been selected based on previous years' booking data, key factors such as what customers are enquiring about and what the travel industry has to offer in 2016.

“Event based travel and up-and-coming destinations are high on the priority list for customers and we expect these trends to continue,” Mr Walley said.

“Old favourites such as Vanuatu and Bali will continue to be popular regardless of the events of 2015 and we expect Australian destinations will also be high on the list as travellers choose to explore our own backyard due to uncertainties surrounding the dollar.”

1. BALI

Despite suffering under a harsh media glare in 2015, the popular holiday destination is a resilient Aussie favourite that can't be matched. Numbers don't drop even during intense media scrutiny, which just proves that Bali can't be beaten.

Flight Centre expects it to remain a popular destination in 2016 with the island consistently the number one destination for customers.

The choice of flights has never been wider or more competitively priced with Tigerair boosting allocation, Air Asia X entering the market with new direct flights from Sydney and Qantas meeting the demand for a premium option to the island.

2. GREECE

Greece's financial woes may have dominated the news headlines in 2015 but Australian travellers were not deterred, with Flight Centre bookings up more than 52 per cent.

Greece's default notice and resulting referendum was a major, world-wide news event with economist worried about the future of the Euro and travel companies concerned about the impact to bookings.

Despite this, Flight Centre bookings surged with the uplift expected through 2016.

Greece is also often found to be a cheaper entry point to Europe than London, Paris or Rome; when it comes to Greece, Flight Centre believes the question really is why shouldn't you go?

3. TASMANIA

It might be small but Flight Centre is predicting big things in the way of travel for Tasmania in 2016.

Interest in the small island state is increasing and Flight Centre has seen a 24 per cent increase in bookings to Launceston while Hobart is up 27 per cent year-on-year.

Tasmania's unique wilderness, art and culture, focus on food and nod to its colonial history make it a big drawcard and the state is perfect for driving holidays attracting families and grey nomads alike.

Back in early 2016 is MOFO Festival from Hobart's MONA which is an ever growing event on the scene for art lovers and music fans while the winter festival Dark MOFO has a cult following that's set to increase.

4. VANUATU

Vanuatu has experienced a surge in popularity in recent months, despite the region's recent cyclone devastation. Recovery efforts have moved at a significant pace, with 85 per cent of hotels and resorts open and welcoming guests and more than 90 per cent of tours and activities operating as normal. This tourism resurgence is showing no signs of slowing down, with 2016 set to be a big year for bookings.

Offering a diverse range of island activities and some of the most authentic cultural experiences in the South Pacific, Vanuatu is perfect for families with children who don't want to give up their dream of an overseas island getaway.

The island is also great for those who enjoy being a bit more adventurous. Vanuatu is home to one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes, Mt Yasur, where you can stand on the rim and look into the bubbling lava below. You can also snorkel at the underwater post office at Hideaway Island, river kayak, take a buggy tour to the famous Mele Cascades Waterfalls and dive for ship wrecks with the world's largest wreck, SS President Coolidge, in Vanuatu's waters.

5. THE NORTHERN TERRITORY AND TOP END

Flight Centre has seen a 25 per cent year-on-year increase in bookings to Uluru and the Northern Territory is anticipated to be even more popular with tourists in 2016 thanks to recent hotel refurbishments and the introduction of some unique touring options.

Next year will see the launch of scenic flights over Australia's Red Centre, taking in Uluru and Mt Conner, and some unique on the ground tours such as a bush tucker trail and an overnight option to neighbouring Kings Canyon.

Nearby, Darwin is also growing in popularity and is brimming with new products including accommodation, touring, restaurants and quirky bars. For the ultimate "Top End" Aussie adventure Flight Centre suggests travellers combine a trip to the red centre with some time in Darwin as well.

6. BRAZIL

It barely seems like yesterday that Brazil played host to FIFA football fans and now the country is gearing up for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

A total of 7.5 million tickets have been made available for the 16-day sporting event and a further 1.8 million tickets have been released for the 12-day Paralympic Games, creating what is expected to be Brazil's biggest and busiest tourism influx in history.

Flight Centre is anticipating a big surge in multi-stop fares ahead of the Games that are an economical way for savvy travellers to get there, plus increased bookings to other areas of Brazil and South America as travellers make the most of their long-haul holiday.

As the largest country in South America, Brazil is jam-packed with things to see and do. It's one of the sexiest destinations in the world, known for its samba music, soccer stars and supermodel exports.

7. PORTUGAL

An up-and-coming European river cruise region with the next generation of ships on its way, Flight Centre believes 2016 is Portugal's year. Many travellers have already cruised the major rivers of Europe, including the Rhine and Danube, making Portugal's Douro River a less travelled alternative that is high on the wish list.

The increased interest has sparked rejuvenation in the industry with Scenic Tours leading the charge with a new luxury vessel launching in April, while Uniworld and Viking also present a high standard of cruise accommodation.

Because it is still developing, travellers can get an authentic taste of life in Portugal as they port in rural villages that are unaccustomed to tourists. Cruising during harvest season in September and October is a great option for wine lovers while spring is also a picturesque time to cruise.

8. HONG KONG

Hong Kong is no longer just a stopover destination and Australians can't seem to get enough, with 60 per cent of travellers to the culturally diverse Chinese territory return visitors.

Best known as a shoppers' paradise, Flight Centre believes Hong Kong will be a mecca for travellers in 2016 with food, nightlife, attractions, sporting events, outdoor activities and the culture all big drawcards for Australian travellers.

Whether it's riding the Peak Tram to The Peak for a breathtaking view over the city and Victoria Harbour, experiencing a day of non-stop fun at Hong Kong Disneyland, riding with the locals on Star Ferry from Hong Kong island to Kowloon, enjoying the world's best dim sum or shopping at the countless malls and markets; there is something for everyone in this dynamic metropolis.

9. NEW CALEDONIA

Why New Caledonia for 2016? Because the country is one of the most overlooked beach destinations in the world. 2015's bookings have been up 178 per cent and this time Flight Centre won't let it slip under the radar.

A French country stranded on one of the world's largest lagoons, so very far from Paris but right on Australia's doorstep, New Caledonia is a unique destination not to be missed. Boasting the glamour of France with the hospitality of the South Pacific, New Caledonia is steeped in French colonial history yet has the beach vibe and culture of an exotic paradise.

Key to its growing popularity among Australians is its proximity to Australian soil with Noumea a short two hour flight from Brisbane and less than three hours from Sydney.

10. NEW ZEALAND

Another Aussie favourite, New Zealand is a much-loved destination by Australians of all ages with the popular country just a hop, skip and jump from our shores.

New Zealand has something for everyone and with increased competition for flight pricing between Air New Zealand and Jetstar and the dollar back in our favour, Flight Centre is confident Australians will continue to visit.

New Zealand's magnificent landscape and coastline has been a backdrop to famous films and is rich in history and culture, has thousands of kilometres of walks and trails, spectacular islands and not to mention the geothermal areas and volcanoes; this small country is filled to the brim with things to do.

New Caledonia Home to the Largest Nature Preserve on Earth

New Caledonia
A newly established marine park the size of Alaska on Australia's doorstep

New Caledonia is already regarded as an ecological hotspot, with the world's largest coastal lagoon and UNESCO World Heritage site in their backyard, but now this natural wonder has added another to the list.

Covering more than 1.3 million square kilometres, New Caledonia is home to the largest nature preserve on Earth, Le Parc Naturel de la Mer de Corail, or 'the Natural Park of the Coral Sea'.

The marine park is larger than Alaska, twice the size of Texas, three times the size of Germany and much larger than any other protected area on the planet.

The newly established sanctuary, Le Parc Naturel de la Mer de Corail, comes after an exemplary decision by the Government of New Caledonia to protect its natural wealth and create the world's largest protected area on land and sea.

The area covers around 450,000 hectares of coral reefs, 25 species of marine mammals, 48 shark species, 19 species of nesting birds and five species of sea turtles. The park's ecosystem also generates up to 3,000 tons of fish every year, providing an important food source for New Caledonia's quarter of a million human inhabitants.

New Caledonia Tourism's sales and marketing director, Caroline Brunel, said this is a significant and monumental decision for New Caledonia and the entire Pacific region.

"This is a historic moment in marine conservation as well as sustainable tourism. Such a measure exemplifies that it is possible to invest in the long-term health and productivity of our ocean resources, whilst also investing in our tourism industry,” she said.

“Not only does the park set an international example with its sheer size, it also demonstrates how such decisions will positively impact tourism to both New Caledonia and the wider Pacific area.

“We are saving some of our most valuable ecological assets while they are still pristine. Something we will thank ourselves for many years to come when future generations can still experience them," Caroline said.

With the Earth's richest biodiversity per square kilometre, according to Lonely Planet, New Caledonia is considered the world's only stand-alone biodiversity hotspot. Home to the second-longest double-barrier coral reef, after Australia's Great Barrier Reef; the world's largest coastal lagoon and now the largest nature preserve on Earth, there are no shortage of reasons to visit this naturally diverse destination.

As the closest overseas destination to Australia, New Caledonia is an ideal destination for Australians looking for a Pacific holiday with a difference, as its resident's converse in French, the island offers a Pacific Islands paradise.

Flying direct with Aircalin you can be in Noumea, in two hours from Brisbane, less than three hours from Sydney and under four hours from Melbourne; the short flying times make this Pacific island the perfect long weekend getaway, with a marine park the size of Alaska waiting just on Australia's doorstep.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Accelerates Expansion in Australia and the Pacific with Six New Openings in 2014

Sheraton on the Park in Sydney
Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, today announced at the Asia Pacific Incentives and Meetings Expos (AIME) that it plans to forge ahead with expansion in Australia and the Pacific, opening six new hotels and resorts this year. Reflecting strong demand in the region, the vigorous growth will be fuelled by Sheraton, Starwood’s largest and most global brand, as well as by a dynamic travel industry partnership between Starwood Preferred Guest® (SPG®), Starwood’s innovative loyalty program, and Virgin Australia.

Within this region, Starwood is targeting both established markets, such as Australia; and increasingly popular resort destinations, including Fiji, Samoa and New Caledonia. The six new properties to open in 2014 include Sheraton Melbourne Hotel and Four Points by Sheraton Brisbane in Australia; Sheraton Resort & Spa, Tokoriki Island, Fiji; Sheraton New Caledonia Deva Resort & Spa; Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Resort and Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Hotel.

“We are embarking on a milestone year for Starwood’s growth and development in the Pacific,” said Sean Hunt , Regional Vice President, Pacific, Starwood Hotels & Resorts. “I am confident that the strength of our brands, especially Sheraton, will fulfil robust demand for upper-upscale hospitality offerings in Australia, the region’s mature market, as well as in emerging resort isles – providing a range of excellent facilities for both business and leisure travellers.”

Starwood currently operates 14 hotels in the Pacific region, with nine hotels in Australia, including Sheraton on the Park in Sydney; The Westin Sydney; The Westin Melbourne; Sheraton Mirage Resort & Spa, Gold Coast; Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas Resort; and Sheraton Noosa Resort & Spa. In addition, there are three hotels in Fiji and two in New Caledonia. At year-end 2014, the company expects to have 20 operating hotels and resorts. In addition, The Westin Perth is in the pipeline for 2017 openings.

Strong Demand for Iconic Sheraton Brand

Among Starwood’s portfolio of nine unique lifestyle brands, Sheraton in particular plays a leading role in maintaining the firm’s premier position in the region. The iconic brand currently operates six hotels in the Pacific; by the end of 2014, Sheraton will nearly double its presence in the region with five openings. Last year, the Sheraton brand celebrated its 100th hotel in Asia Pacific, and the brand anticipates the achievement of its 500th global hotel milestone by 2016.

Lack of supply presents pent-up demand for lodging in Australia

Australia presents significant growth opportunities for Starwood in 2014. The hospitality landscape is characterized by a lack of new supply, even in the face of steady demand growth. Sheraton Melbourne will mark the Sheraton brand’s return to the city after nearly a decade. Located at the Paris end of the CBD, the hotel will feature 174 well-appointed guest rooms; a bistro-style signature restaurant; The Terrace Bar; a heated indoor pool; a well-equipped Business Centre and over 650 square metres of meeting spaces. Sheraton Melbourne provides guests with the brand’s signature amenities, including the Sheraton Sweet Sleeper® Bed, Link@Sheraton(SM) experienced with Microsoft® for seamless connectivity, the Sheraton Fitness Programmed by Core® Performance programme, a heated indoor pool, and signature spa.

In time for the G20 Summit, which will take place in Brisbane this November, Four Points by Sheraton Brisbane will open in March, marking the first internationally branded property to enter the Brisbane CBD market in over ten years. A new-build property, the 246-room hotel will offer uncomplicated comforts that are big on value. In addition to state-of-the-art meeting rooms, a fully-equipped gym and an all-day dining restaurant and casual cafe/bar, Four Points by Sheraton Brisbane will feature the brand’s Simple Pleasures(SM) — a great night’s sleep in a Four Points Signature Bed, free bottled water daily and High Speed Internet Access.

“Australia is benefitting from record low supply and the global travel revolution, with continued increase in domestic travel and a robust outlook for international visitors led by the growing number of Chinese travellers,” says Matthew Fry , Senior Vice President, Acquisitions & Development, Asia Pacific, Starwood Hotels & Resorts. “Starwood’s powerful network, global booking platforms and loyal customer base enable developers and investors to capitalize on this upswing in development.”

Dynamic Upmarket Resort Portfolio

Starwood is leveraging the popularity of the Pacific islands among increasingly affluent global travellers, with the openings of Sheraton Resort & Spa, Tokoriki Island, Fiji and Sheraton New Caledonia Deva Resort & Spa this year. Sheraton will also debut in Samoa, marking the introduction of the first international hospitality brand to the market, through the recently signed management agreement of Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Resort and Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Hotel.

Situated five minutes from the airport on the island of Upolu’s western coast, Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Resort will feature 1,000 metres of white sand beachfront and ocean views from the comfort of 140 guest rooms and suites. The resort, which is expected to be re-launched by mid-2014, will also offer tennis courts, a large outdoor fantasy pool, multiple restaurants and bars, and two well-equipped meeting spaces. Additionally, the resort will have easy access to a full-service casino and nearby golf courses.

Also on Upolu, Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Hotel will house 198 guest rooms and suites on a waterfront location in Apia, Samoa’s commercial hub and capital. The property will cater to a range of events, from intimate executive meetings to large social gatherings. In addition to signature amenities, the resort will provide a restaurant and bar, a large outdoor fantasy pool, pool bar and will be located in close proximity to a full-service casino.

Nestled within Fiji’s idyllic Mamanuca group, Sheraton Resort & Spa, Tokoriki Island, Fiji will enhance Starwood’s already solid positioning in Fiji, complementing the existing Sheraton Denarau Villas, Sheraton Fiji Resort and The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa Fiji. The resort, scheduled to open in March 2014, will feature 101 guest rooms, an outdoor swimming pool, a “Gold Class” style theatre/cinema accommodating up to 50 guests, three distinctive dining venues, a modern day spa and several state-of-the-art function spaces.

With a distinctive Melanesian-French flavour amidst natural splendour, the new build Sheraton New Caledonia Deva Resort & Spa will open on New Caledonia’s Grande Terre in July 2014. The 180-room resort will boast two large meeting spaces and a house reef that offers spectacular diving and snorkelling opportunities. Guests can also partake in many aquatic and land sports, join ocean or river excursions, and hike on lush trails, among other recreational pursuits.

All properties will feature Sheraton signature amenities, including Sheraton Fitness Programmed by Core Performance™; Link@Sheraton(SM) experience with Microsoft®; and the Sheraton Sweet Sleeper® Bed, LCD flat panel television and generous work spaces in each guest room.

New Developments Laying the Foundations for the Future of New Caledonian Tourism

A GROWING DESTINATION

New Caledonia has been establishing its reputation among island destinations over the past decade or so. Within Europe, it is above all the French market and, among neighbouring markets Australia, New Zealand and Japan account for the lion's share of tourist and traveller flows.

All markets combined, 2011 was a record year with 111,875 tourists visiting New Caledonia.

TOURISM DEVELOPMENT FOR THE FUTURE

The New Caledonian tourism sector is entering a new era of consolidation with its facilities and infrastructure.

Faced with rising visitor numbers and the demands of international tourism, the Territory's political and economic leaders have become aware of the future potential of this exceptional destination. In a coordinated approach, the stakeholders have launched initiatives to renovate, develop, commercialise and create tools for New Caledonian tourism.

Tourism's economic dimension has thus been reinforced and has reasserted its place in the economic and social future of the Territory.

Luxury international brands provide robust and vibrant activity in the hotel industry.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts has already established itself in the Territory, with the Le Méridien chain and its two high-end establishments in Noumea and on the Isle of Pines. Its expansion in the Territory will take place through the Sheraton chain. It is in BOURAIL, one and a half hours north of the international airport, that the SHERATON DEVA Golf Resort and Spa will open its doors in December 2013.

With its sustainable development approach, the resort looks out over the UNESCO World Heritage lagoon and reefs and, with a land area of 8,000 hectares, offers 120 rooms and suites, 60 bungalows and an 18-hole signature golf course designed by American architect Dye. This high-end establishment will meet the needs of an international clientele all the while constituting a local development that respects the environment and the indigenous populations, as explained by managing director Dominique Michaud.

Similarly, the GLP Hôtels Résidence La Promenade, which opened in 2007 and contains 154 suites and apartments, will become a member of the HILTON chain on 1 July 2013. This provides an excellent opportunity for the Territory to gain exposure in the international client network of one of the world's most prominent chains.

The GLP Group has 730 rooms spread over La Promenade, L'Escapade Ilot Maitre, the Nouvata Complex and Le Paris.

Travel operators join forces

ARC EN CIEL Voyages, the largest incoming tourism agency in the Territory is gearing up. The agency, which is the leader in its market and has a presence in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea, has opened its share capital to hotel operators in New Caledonia and local institutions. And very soon, TAHITI NUI Voyages, the leading tourism operator in Polynesia since 1965, will also enter the share capital of Arc En Ciel Voyages, "in the spirit of complement and not competition", explain Jérôme Pantaloni, Manager of AEC, and Stéphane Sonnet, Managing Director and Director of Development at Tahiti Nui Voyages.

These partnerships will add vigour to the tourism destination that is New Caledonia.

TRAVEL safe and secure

1 - TONTOUTA: Facelift at La Tontouta International Airport

Major renovation works have created a whole new airport to better welcome travellers. The customs and bio-security area has been revamped with a view to facilitating passenger inflow and outflow. Similarly, the new departure lounge now boasts gangways, in addition to which a second check-in hall has been created. Baggage claim area has been separated in two. Lastly, a large souvenir store has been set up over 210m2 and duty free has been reorganised.

These works were carried out by the New Caledonia Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which operates the La Tontouta airport.

Sculpture by the Sea - Worlds Largest Outdoor Exhibition

The world’s largest annual free-to-the-public outdoor sculpture exhibition opened today along the spectacular coastal walk from Bondi Beach to Tamarama Beach. It attracts sculptors from around the world. This year the talented line-up includes artists from Australia, Denmark, Japan, India, New Caledonia and the USA.

The 15th Annual Sculpture by the Sea is staged along the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk. The coastal walk begins at the bottom of Notts Avenue, which runs off Campbell Parade, Bondi. The coastal walk can also be accessed by stairs at various points along the exhibition route at Hunter Park, Gaerloch Avenue and Pacific Avenue. The exhibition finishes at Tamarama Park, Marine Drive, Tamarama.

HUNTER Valley artist Paul Selwood has won this year’s Sculpture by the Sea. Sewood, whose work is included in many public collections including the Art Gallery of NSW, was awarded the $65,000 Balnaves Foundation Sculpture Prize for his work titled paradiegma metaphysic. Sculpture by the Sea founding director David Handley said: ““It’s great to see a sculptor like Paul get this recognition. “He’s put decades of work into his practice and is one of the quietly spoken senior figures in Australian sculpture.”

Half a million people are expected to flock to the coastal track between Tamarama and Bondi over the next 18 days to see Sculpture by the Sea. Tourism Minister George Souris launched the 15th anniversary event today, saying it marked, for many people, “the start of summer celebrations in Sydney”.  “Over the next two weeks, works by more than 100 Australian and International artists will take position along two picturesque coastlines from Bondi to Tamarama. The State government has increased its funding to $1.2 million over four years to support the event. “I am delighted that this boost in funding has enabled organisers to reintroduce an important subsidy for participating artists. “In 2011, Sculpture by the Sea will offer a minimum artist subsidy of $2,000 for each artist who does not otherwise earn this amount from the exhibition,” Mr Souris said.

Princess Mary and family are expected to tour the exhibition before it wraps up on Sunday, November 20.

Sculpture Inside.
Sculpture Inside is an indoor exhibition of sculpture by exhibiting artists and selected invited artists held by Sculpture by the Sea to coincide with the outdoor exhibition. Sculpture Inside has become a well respected exhibition in its own right and is extremely popular with collectors and the general public. The exhibition provides a wonderful opportunity to purchase works by emerging, mid-career and established Australian and international artists. It is open 9am - 5:30pm weekdays and 9am - 7pm weekends, during the exhibition period at the Sculpture Inside marquee in Mark's Park, Tamarama, Sydney on the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition trail. There is free admission to this exhibition
