As global travel continues to surge, one airline is celebrating a milestone that reflects both its legacy and its future ambition. Ethiopian Airlines marks 80 years of aviation excellence in 2026, while simultaneously accelerating connectivity between Asia and Africa through its growing Singapore hub.
From its first commercial flight in 1946 to becoming Africa’s largest aviation group, Ethiopian Airlines has evolved into a major global carrier linking continents, cultures and economies.
Eight Decades of Aviation Leadership
The airline’s success is built on continuous investment in modern aircraft, operational efficiency and customer experience, making it a preferred choice for both business and leisure travellers.
Singapore Emerges as a Strategic Gateway
Ethiopian Airlines has experienced even stronger momentum, with passenger volumes via Singapore increasing by 87 percent year on year. By the end of 2026, the airline expects to carry more than 200,000 travellers from Asia through Singapore to Addis Ababa.
To support this growth, the airline now operates five weekly direct services between Singapore and Addis Ababa, strengthening the city’s role as a vital aviation bridge between Asia and Africa.
Unlocking Opportunities Across Continents
Addis Ababa continues to play a central role in this growth, acting as a key hub linking Southeast Asia with emerging opportunities across Africa. This aligns with the airline’s long-term Vision 2035 strategy, focused on strengthening the Asia–Africa corridor and expanding both passenger and cargo connectivity.
Innovation and the Future of Flight
The airline is also exploring innovative mobility solutions such as electric air taxis, while planning the development of the ambitious Bishoftu International Airport project. With an estimated investment of 12.5 billion dollars, this future hub is set to significantly expand capacity and enhance global connectivity.
A Milestone That Signals the Future
Celebrating 80 years is not only a reflection of Ethiopian Airlines’ rich heritage, but also a clear indicator of its forward-looking vision. As travel demand between Asia and Africa continues to grow, the airline is well positioned to lead the next phase of global aviation connectivity.
With Singapore playing an increasingly important role in this network, travellers now have more seamless, efficient and exciting ways to explore Africa from Asia.
