Events bringing visitors to Queensland

Yesterday it was announced that the world’s largest mountain bike festival, Crankworx, has added the ‘Party in Paradise’ entertainment program to attract even more visitors to Cairns next month.

Known as the ‘Paradise Edition’ of the Crankworx World Tour, the Cairns event is estimated to bring almost $7 million into the local economy. The addition of the entertainment program was made possible thanks to joint funding from the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) following ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper and associated flooding.

The addition of the entertainment program was made possible thanks to joint funding from the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) following ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper and associated flooding.

This follows the recent announcement of the 'Savannah Sounds on the Reef' event aimed to drive visitors to the tropical north, which is being staged this Saturday and is spotlighting the Savannah in the Round event later this year.

Also contributing to the recovery of the Cairns and Great Barrier Reef region, Port Douglas Carnivale has announced two new additions to their stellar program as the event ramps up for its 30th anniversary.

This week has also been a big one for Brisbane events, with the countdown on for Suncorp Stadium hosting the first game of the first-ever three-game Ampol Women’s State of Origin series, which will kick off a four-day festival of Rugby League from 16 - 19 May with NRL Magic Round also taking place in Brisbane.

A family favourite, the annual Kalbar Sunflower Festival was held last weekend in the Scenic Rim, selling out once again with an estimated attendance of 16,000 to marvel at the roughly 1.5 million sunflowers. This event is supported through TEQ's Queensland Destination Events Program (QDEP - Round 28 currently open for applications) and is a great example of an accessible Queensland event, making it possible for as many visitors as possible to participate in this joyful event.

In 2024 Queensland’s events calendar is expected to generate $850 million for our state’s economy, demonstrating the power of events to bring visitors to the host destination.

Luxurious Resort Opens Exquisite Old-World Bar By The Beach

Anam Mui Ne
The Anam Mui Ne, an Indochine-era inspired resort in Vietnam’s popular beach town Mui Ne, has opened a quaint new bar that pays homage to the intimate Saigon bars of yesteryear.

The 1.2 hectare resort, which is the Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) portfolio’s only Vietnamese property, this month unveiled the new watering hole, aptly dubbed Saigon Bar, on some of the resort’s most inspiring ground overlooking Mui Ne beach.

Adjacent to the resort’s 266sqm saltwater infinity swimming pool and immaculate lawn, Saigon Bar is situated at the other end of the beach to Lang Viet Restaurant & Bar, bookending the resort’s best view over the waterfront.

Softly lit with caged lanterns and candles, the bar is fashioned from hardwood sourced from sustainably cultivated forests in Vietnam’s Nam Dinh province and bedecked with customized encaustic tiles, evoking an atmosphere of old-world elegance.

Fronted by a grey cobble-stone terrace with a handful of outdoor wooden bar tables flanked by rattan stools, Saigon Bar’s interior is home to cozy rattan chairs clustered in semi-circles and a bar featuring woodwork that took craftspeople months to complete. Greenery cascades down the bar’s exterior from wooden plant boxes fastened to a balcony above.

The bar’s shelves are lined with all sorts of boutique spirits from Vietnam and around the world, such as Ho Chi Minh City-based Lady Trieu’s craft gins including ‘Dalat Flowerbomb’, ‘Mekong Delta Dry’, ‘Hoi An Spice Road’ and ‘Sapa Citrus Tea’.

Saigon Bar’s extensive drinks menu includes an array of spirits, beers, wines, signature cocktails, large cocktails shared between four people and “choose your own” mojitos, daiquiris, and margaritas. Surprises including ‘The Anam Penicillin’, comprising Whisky Glenmorangie 10, whisky Famous Grouse, whisky Laphroaig 10, chamomile infused Quinta do Noval 10 Tawny Port, clarified lemon juice, honey and ginger syrup, and ‘Smokey Frangipani Blossom’ made up of Frangipani infused Haku vodka, Ricard, apple juice, celery juice, clarified lemon juice and maple syrup.

Vietnamese coffee, milk shakes, loose green and black leaf teas, freshly squeezed juices, home-made iced teas, and kombucha with all sorts of health benefits concocted on the resort’s grounds are also on offer.

In addition to ‘smoothie bowls’ packed with different fruits, the bar also serves tapas including the likes of a cheese and charcuterie platter, a grilled prawn salad, beef satay skewers, and salted and spicy crispy pork skin. The selection of desserts ranges from ice-cream and sorbet to chocolate raspberry cheesecake and bubble tea panna cotta.

Anam Mui Ne
“Our Saigon Bar may be new but when you set foot inside, you feel like you’re stepping back in time, to a charming bar in bygone Saigon’s labyrinthine alleyways, where the atmosphere is almost as palpable and the unique beverages and tapas we’ve concocted,” said the resort’s manager Ye Chang Sheng (Peter).

Captain Cook Cruises Fiji Debuts its Southern Lau Expedition with Never-before Visited Locations onboard MS Caledonian Sky

Fiji’s expedition specialist Captain Cook Cruises Fiji has just returned from its inaugural seven-night voyage to the Southern Lau archipelago. The Southern Lau itineraries now feature on the cruise line’s program with departures each month for the remainder of the 2024 season, and including two bonus itineraries that combine with a visit to Tonga for the annual whale migration in August.

On an extraordinary journey, expedition small ship MS Caledonian Sky’s inaugural Southern Lau voyage featured many ‘firsts’ with several stops visiting destinations tourists had never before visited. Each morning, the ship’s cultural delegation went ashore for the traditional sevu sevu with the village chiefs and elders, and the ship’s guests were then officially welcomed ashore.

Every land-stop along the voyage offered wonderful experiences, from the warm welcome at Buliya village and a discovery of the rich history at Matuku to Fulaga's extraordinary aqua blue beauty and Totoya which delighted guests with its culture and thrilling dive spots. Beqa wowed with traditional ceremonies and firewalking while Vatulele captivated guests with its gorgeous lagoon, ancient rock paintings, caves and vibrant cultural encounters.

With generously inclusive rates from $7,693, the Southern Lau departures are detailed here and a summary follows:

BULIYA: The journey began with a warm reception at Buliya village. This was the first ever visit of its kind to the village and the ship’s guests and crew were greeted with enthusiastic singing. It was Easter Sunday and the special church service with its incredible choir was followed by a village tour and a refreshing swim.

MATUKU: Matuku Island was the only island in Lau not to have been conquered by the Tongans. As the first organised tourism visit to the island, the ship’s guests discovered rich Fijian history, a significant cultural site and thrilling surf breaks. Despite its warlike past, the locals welcomed the visitors with vibrant dancing and cultural experiences.

FULAGA: Located halfway to Tonga, Fulaga revealed its heavenly beauty, with welcoming villagers showcasing their renowned wood carving craftsmanship and hospitality. Passengers basked in the island's idyllic charm, dubbed "heaven on earth". Fulaga's aqua blue waters seem to go for on ever.

YAGASA: At Yagasa the ship’s guests enjoyed the picturesque scenery, with time to relax and swim or kayak.

TOTOYA: The ship arrived in Totoya to the news that they had no contact for a month as the supply barge that usually comes once every two weeks had not come for four. Despite this, Fijian happiness abounded and Totoya's well organised village showcased its trade in copra and coconut, offering enriching experiences like copra demonstrations and a fabulous cultural performance by the school students. Passengers explored its underwater wonders and top dive spots, ending the day with excellent surfing adventures.

BEQA: After the traditional welcome by the locals, Beqa Island treated passengers to an awe-inspiring firewalking display. Passengers immersed in village life, enjoying warm hospitality and sampling delicious local cuisine.

VATULELE: Hidden gem Vatulele revealed its beauty and vibrant cultural heritage. From its magnificent lagoon, white sandy beaches, caves and hidden canyons to an experience of 3000-year-old rock art, sacred red prawns and immersive cultural encounters, the island captivated all with its charm, a fitting wrap to a Southern Lau adventure.

‘ASEAN + India Shoppers in Thailand’ activity to boost Thai economy with soft power

From 29 April to 15 June 2024, ASEAN and Indian tourists are invited to vote for their favourite Thai soft power and get a gift voucher to shop for Thai products.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and partners announced the ‘ASEAN + India Shoppers in Thailand’ activity, inviting ASEAN and Indian tourists to vote for their favourite Thai soft-power element and get a shopping voucher. The activity will run from 29 April to 15 June 2024.

TAT Governor, Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, said “The project underscores the government’s policy to establish Thailand as a tourism hub, while promoting ASEAN as a single tourism destination. It also supports the government’s soft power promotion policy to raise awareness and boost sales for Thai products.”

The activity is part of a broader effort to enhance Thailand’s appeal to short-haul travellers. It will showcase Thailand’s soft power through participating stores where tourists can shop for Thai aromatics, tasty treats, fashion clothes and accessories designed and made locally here.

“We have designed the online quiz and the gift voucher redemption process to be easy and inclusive for ASEAN and Indian tourists, and we hope that they will take this opportunity to support Thai brands and products while exploring the influences of Thai soft power in tourism,” Ms. Thapanee said.

Passport holders of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, and India can simply log on to the website aseanindiashoppers.com to vote for Thailand’s rich cultural resources according to the 5Fs: food, film, fashion, fight, and festivals. The website will be activated on 29 April 2024.

As a token of appreciation, participants will be given gift vouchers and special privileges, worth 500 Baht to 3,000 Baht each, that can be used to purchase Thai fashion and lifestyle brands as well as authentic Thai products at participating stores of King Power Corporation, King Power Click (FIRSTER), Multiply by Eight (X8), Central Group, Tops Market, Big C Supercenter, Good Goods, and Erb.

The gift vouchers and special privileges can be used at the participating stores in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Chon Buri, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani, Songkhla, and Nakhon Ratchasima.

The project is expected to attract 5,000 participants, helping to generate about 131 million Baht in tourism revenue.

The ‘ASEAN + India Shoppers in Thailand’ activity aims to promote short-haul tourism and stimulate travel and spending by tourists from ASEAN and India who see Thailand as a weekend destination and a popular shopping destination.

Given the geographical proximity of these countries, it takes no more than two hours to travel from the neighbouring countries to Thailand and about four hours from India. In addition, ASEAN tourists are not required to obtain a visa when entering Thailand, while Indian tourists can take advantage of the current temporary 30-day visa-free entry.

Convenient access and stimulus visa policy are among key factors contributing to 75 per cent of ASEAN tourists being repeated visitors and India being the fastest growing source market.

Thailand expects the number of visitor arrivals from ASEAN to bypass 10 million this year, while the number of Indian tourists is forecasted to reach 1.7 million. This constitutes 35 per cent of this year’s target of 35 million arrivals.

If you want to enjoy a flatter, easier and perhaps more relaxing ride (no hills!) then riding either the bike friendly Zoo Drive/Crystal Springs Drive or the Los Angeles River Bike Path may be a great option. This guide will move from the northern end of Zoo Drive that meets Forest lawn Drive at the Travel Town Railroad and we will move south to the Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round. You can ride this route going either direction, there is plenty of parking at either end.

Start at the Travel Town Railroad Museum, where you can take a few minutes to check out the historic trains on display at Travel Town. It’s free and really cool. When you’re done Instagramming selfies with locomotives, ride east on Zoo Drive. The shoulder is wide and traffic tends to be on the slow side. Soon you’ll pass the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad - a museum and miniature railroad (the Ghost Train in October is very popular!) and a half-mile after that you’ll come to a three-way stop at Riverside Drive.

At Riverside Drive you have a choice.

STRAIGHT on bike friendly ZOO DRIVE

Continuing straight on Zoo Drive takes you past the grassy meadows, trees and picnic areas that line the southern outskirts of Griffith Park. There may increased traffic during weekday commute hours on this stretch due to drivers attempting to avoid highway traffic.

The road soon finds the L.A. Zoo, the Autry Museum of the American West and their respective parking lots, after which the road is now called Crystal Springs Drive. The road now runs directly through the Wilson and Harding Golf Course so be on the look out for golf carts crossing your path! There are wide shoulders and a pedestrian gravel path off of the road that edges the golf course. You can turn right at the divided lane four-way stop to head up a short distance on Fire Road to the Merry-Go-Round parking lot - also good place to park if you’re starting on this end.

If you want to ride further, keep going on Crystal Springs Drive all the way to Los Feliz Boulevard where you can get on the L.A. River Bike Path and loop back towards Travel Town via Riverside Drive and then Zoo Drive.

LEFT on the L.A. RIVER PATH

You may turn LEFT and ride the Los Angeles River Bike Path for several miles of easy going bike and pedestrian only pavement that hugs the L.A. River.

Watch out for traffic, then take a left on Riverside Drive - you should immediately get onto the sidewalk and in a hundred feet you’ll see the entrance to the L.A. River Bike Path. The path follows the Glendale Narrows, one of the most beautiful stretches of the L.A. River, where hundreds of ducks, geese, egret, swallows and crane float, flap and fly above the tall oak, palm overgrowth and river rocks. Yes, there is also trash caught in the brambles but the river has an undeniable beauty. It’s about 3.6 miles from Riverside Drive to Los Feliz Boulevard, where you can exit the bike path if you wish and head back towards Griffith Park.

Dubai sets new benchmark for Sustainable Tourism with prestigious hotel certification

The Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) has awarded 70 hotels in Dubai with the ‘Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp’, a new sustainability initiative that seeks to recognise hotels with the highest level of adherence to DET’s 19 ‘Sustainability Requirements’. With Dubai taking the lead as the first city in the region to mandate sustainability criteria for its hotel classification system, the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp (DST) initiative further reinforces its drive to become a leading sustainable destination.

The initiative, launched last year in tandem with the UAE Year of Sustainability, which also saw Dubai hosting the milestone COP28 in Expo City Dubai, seeks to support hotels in the city to achieve their sustainability goals as they meet the highest standards of DET’s Sustainability Requirements. The comprehensive set of requirements that hotels need to implement include sustainable management approaches, performance metrics, energy, food and water management plans, guest education, employee training initiatives, creating sustainability committees within hotel establishments, and Corporate Social Responsibility programmes for local communities.

The recipients of this certification were honoured at an award ceremony hosted by DET at Sofitel Dubai The Obelisk, and attended by top hospitality executives as well as DET senior leadership. The awards were presented by His Excellency Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, and Mr. Yousuf Lootah, Head of DET Environmental Sustainability & Social Responsibility Committee.

The DST Stamp validates the commitment of the 70 hotels to implementing sustainability practices and activities, further meeting the expectations of travel industry partners, and an increasingly environmentally conscious traveller base.

The stamp is awarded based on a three-tiered system of gold, silver, and bronze, related to the winner’s level of compliance achieved. This also reflects a thorough accreditation process overseen by a committee of senior industry professionals.

The initiative aims to accelerate the tourism sector’s efforts to support the UAE’s NetZero 2050 strategy, and aligns with the goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, to consolidate Dubai’s position as one of the top three global cities for business and leisure, and the best city to visit, live and work in.

Details of all 70 recipients are available on the Visit Dubai website here: https://www.dubaitourism.gov.ae/en/about-us/tourism-projects/dubai-sustainable-tourism-stamp.

Issam Kazim, CEO, Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing commented: “To position the city as a leading sustainable destination, and contributing to the UAE’s wider Net Zero goals, Dubai is taking a leading role in driving awareness, fostering education and ultimately creating and supporting opportunities to further advance responsible tourism practices. The awarding of the first Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamps is an important moment in our collective journey, and we congratulate and thank the participating and winning hotels for their efforts. Through the continued development of the

DST Stamp, as well as other current and future initiatives, we look forward to making Dubai the first choice destination for global travellers seeking the ultimate sustainable experience.”

With a one-year validity, the ‘Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp’ is the latest initiative in DET's sustainability strategy which has already seen the launch of the Carbon Calculator – a platform conceived to help stakeholders and partners identify cost saving opportunities and manage the transition to sustainable practices – and the Dubai Can initiative, which was launched in February 2022 with the ‘Refill for Life’ campaign promoting the use of reusable bottles and encouraging people to refill via 50 water fountains established throughout the city. A second Dubai Can project, the Dubai Reef, was launched in December 2023; one of the world's largest marine reef developments, Dubai Reef is part of the city’s efforts to increase fish stocks, support sustainable fishing and contribute to boosting food security. Dubai Reef project will also play a vital role in reducing carbon emissions and increasing marine biodiversity.

BRISBANE POWERHOUSE LAUNCHES ‘ACCESS VERTIGO’ A WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE EXPERIENCE AT AUSTRALIA’S FIRST VERTICAL RESTAURANT

After a monumental launch last year, Brisbane Powerhouse has announced that Vertigo, a high-flying dining experience perched on the edge of the iconic building, is now accessible for wheelchair users.

Vertigo is Australia’s first vertical restaurant offering a unique dining and adrenaline experience 17 metres above the ground. Making Vertigo accessible to wheelchair users is the first stage of Access Vertigo – an initiative to make the experience more broadly accessible to many abilities.

Since the initial launch of Vertigo in October 2023, the team sought to make the experience accessible to wheelchair users and those with more complex mobility needs. A specialised team, including CEO of Sporting Wheelies and inclusion advocate Dane Cross, along with Occupational Therapist and wheelchair user Tim Lachlan, was assembled to conceptualise and construct a lightweight wheelchair tailored for elevating individuals for high-altitude adventures such as Vertigo.

Late last year four prototypes were completed, made from aircraft-grade aluminium, and were tested earlier this year by a team in the United States.

Access Vertigo Accessibility Advisor, Dane Cross said it is a testament to what can be achieved when cutting-edge design is combined with a strong commitment to inclusivity.

“Sporting Wheelies’ input into the project enabled us to impart our insight and lived experience of disability to open up a new realm of adventure dining for the community, including those with mobility impairments. It's a proud moment for us to see Access Vertigo not just redefine the parameters of accessible tourism, but also ensure that the excitement and joy of dining in the sky are shared by all,” Cross said.

Kate Gould CEO and Artistic Director of Brisbane Powerhouse said Vertigo’s creator John Sharpe had a vision for the experience to be the same for people with mobility issues and those without”.

“Achieving that vision has been a greater challenge than anticipated, requiring prototyping new wheelchair designs, and lifting techniques. To see wheelchairs finally raised up the wall of Brisbane Powerhouse is exhilarating,” said Gould.

Access Vertigo has been developed to accommodate various types of disabilities for those who use a wheelchair, such as spinal cord injuries, amputees, cerebral palsy, dwarfism, scoliosis, spina bifida, and stroke. A comprehensive outline of who can take part in an accessible sitting at Vertigo can be found on the Vertigo website.

Queensland Tourism Minister Michael Healy MP said Vertigo would take accessible tourism to a whole new level.

“Through the Year of Accessible Tourism grant program, the Queensland Government has helped industry to deliver more accessible tourism experiences,” Mr Healy said.

“Vertigo is a great example of a bold tourism initiative that will capture the interest of international and interstate visitors with diverse access needs.”

“This unforgettable culinary adventure will enable even more people to enjoy our great Queensland lifestyle from a different perspective,” Mr Healy said.

Tourism and Events Queensland CEO Patricia O’Callaghan welcomed the announcement. “Our tourism industry continues to innovate and provide unique experiences for travellers and to see Vertigo open up access so even more people can enjoy it is a wonderful milestone for what is a truly novel experience.”

“We have really great momentum here in Queensland following the Year of Accessible Tourism which launched in 2023, but work continues into 2024 to grow our industry and ensure we deliver a world-class tourism experience for people of all abilities.”

Wheelchair sittings are limited to one wheelchair user per sitting and can be booked by contacting info@vertigobrisbane.com.au directly.

Vertigo’s three-course dinner menu with matched wine and Sunday brunch menu can be adapted to cater for most dietary requirements and costs $250 per person.

Make an unforgettable visit to a turtle hatchery

Babies have a way with our hearts! They will steal yours when you stop over at the Kosgoda Hatcheries where you are bound to find them in all their loving shades of Leatherbacks, Hawksbills, Loggerheads, Green Turtles and the Olive Ridleys, the five species of turtles in the island. Kosgoda, located down south, is one beach in the island where all five species tend to make their nests.

This place is a dedicated turtle welfare centre which nurtures and cares for them from the onset until the little ones hatch and take to their home, the ocean.

Their task begins long before the babies are born. They watch over the nestling mother and once the eggs are laid these are transferred to the safe grounds of the hatchery. The day the babies are born, they are safely released to the waters. If any complications occur, they are tended to and released only when these babies are fit to begin their life journey in the vast ocean.

Sea turtles have become an endangered species all because natural resources are being exploited by human beings. This hatchery has passionately taken up the responsibility in protecting these harmless creatures who are a gentle part of our universal ecosystem supporting the survival of man and the planet.

It would touch your hearts once you drop in to see these lovable little ones at Kosgoda Hatcheries. You may even get the opportunity to release the babies to the ocean if you speak to the staff in there. It would surely fill your heart with emotion, remembering how the delicate babies you released off your hands, ran to the great ocean flapping with joy, like a child would, to their mother.

Bar Lettera brings distinct blend of food, wine and art to North Sydney

North Sydney is set to welcome a new all-day dining hotspot to the local culinary landscape, with the opening of the stylish Bar Lettera inside Citadines Walker North Sydney on Saturday April 27.

The contemporary Italo-Australian restaurant and wine bar offers a unique all-day menu that blends European tradition and homegrown creativity within a tastefully curated space, giving a glimpse into North Sydney’s artistic soul. Bar Lettera is an experience that appeals to all the senses.

A member of The Ascott Limited’s leading portfolio of brands, Citadines (French for ‘City dwellers’) enables guests to experience the best elements of urban living, both within and outside their rooms. The new 90-seat venue strikes a harmony between restaurant and bar, complimenting the core brand promise of Citadines, which offers modern and flexible accommodation in both established and emerging metropolitan hubs.

Head Chef Ryan Perry’s approach to designing the menu involved tapping into the familiar comforts of traditional Italian cuisine, which he has reimagined using quality produce and Australian creative flair.

“Bar Lettera is all about embracing creativity. The team’s goal was to build a meeting place - somewhere relaxed to enjoy good times, great conversation, with food and wine that complements this,” said Managing Director of The Ascott Limited Australia, David Mansfield. “The opportunity was blending these elements to create a menu that appealed to a broad range of diners. Everyone is welcome at Bar Lettera.”

Area General Manager of The Ascott Limited Australia, Mark Robertson, said Bar Lettera is unique in North Sydney’s ascendant dining scene, in that it offers an unforgettable culinary experience combined with fine wines and artistic expression.

A curated cocktail selection awaits guests, whilst the wine list combines European favourites with vibrant homegrown drops – varietals all carefully selected to complement the diverse palette of flavours found on the menu.
