Booking.com Research Reveals How LGBTQIA+ Travellers from Australia and Asia-Pacific Are Taking Control of Their Trips

Building on its mission to make it easier for everyone to experience the world, Booking.com’s latest LGBTQIA+ travel research reveals that travellers continue to face significant challenges. More than half (53%) of Australian LGBTQIA+ travellers have experienced discrimination when travelling, rising to 62% for travellers across Asia-Pacific.

LGBTQIA+ travellers expect some form of discriminatory behaviour from both their fellow travellers (46%) and locals (54%) at their chosen destinations. Half (51%) agree that being LGBTQIA+ has made them more insecure and self-conscious as a traveller. This is of greater concern for those who identify as transgender (64%), intersex (57%) and non-binary (56%). Reported discrimination experiences for travellers in Asia-Pacific varied widely across the region.

Asia-Pacific LGBTQIA+ travellers who experienced discrimination whilst travelling:
· India - 92%
· Singapore - 82%
· Thailand - 75%
· Vietnam - 69%
· Hong Kong - 66%
· Taiwan - 62%
· Australia - 53%
· New Zealand - 43%
· Japan - 36%
· APAC - 62%

Destination deliberations impact travel choices

Reflecting economic uncertainties affecting parts of the world, accommodation that fits within budget is the primary concern for a majority (68%) of LGBTQIA+ travellers. The majority (67%) also believe that being able to be their authentic self on their trip is their next most important factor. Over half (56%) consider local legislation regarding LGBTQIA+ rights an important factor and a quarter (28%) have cancelled a trip within the past year after seeing a destination being unsupportive of its LGBTQIA+ residents.

When presented with the choice, over half (63%) say they prefer to visit destinations where LGBTQIA+ tourism is already well established, compared with 49% who would rather consider locations where their presence could contribute to broadening social awareness and acceptance. Nearly two-thirds (58%) are more likely to book travel experiences inspired by LGBTQIA+ pop culture with millennials (70%) the most likely.

Code-switching and travel personas

LGBTQIA+ travellers are actively adopting personas to protect themselves on their trips. A third of LGBTQIA+ travellers (36%) say that they modify aspects of their appearance and behaviour to avoid potential discrimination or unwanted attention, while 35% have created an alter-ego to navigate different environments when travelling. This is most common with transgender travellers (59%), and lesbian travellers (47%).

Travel industry allies

Travelling to destinations that have adequate legislation in place facilitates feeling included and this is reflected in interactions with those that work in the travel industry: 85% of LGBTQIA+ travellers feel comfortable when arriving to check in at their accommodation. When asked what features LGBTQIA+ travellers would like to see from travel companies to improve future travel experiences, 32% referenced filters that would facilitate identifying properties that offer a welcoming experience. This is of particular importance for transgender (49%) and genderfluid (40%) travellers.

“At Booking.com, we passionately believe that everyone should be able to travel and experience the world in their own unique way," says Arjan Dijk, CMO and Senior Vice President at Booking.com.

“As a gay man, I unfortunately know first-hand the challenges that persist in many parts of the world, including sadly with travel alerts already being issued ahead of Pride events this year. Despite all this, I am incredibly inspired to see LGBTQIA+ travellers resiliently embracing their lived experiences, both at home and during their trips. While real and tangible progress is being made, we must remain vigilant and do our part to make it truly easier for everyone to Travel Proud.”

Since launching in 2021, Booking.com’s Travel Proud program provides free inclusive hospitality training for accommodations to help them gain a better understanding of the specific challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ travellers. New Boutique Resort in Central Vietnam Goes Big on Technology-led Wellness

Wafaifo Resort Hoi An
When it opens in September, the Wafaifo Resort in heritage city of Hoi An will offer epigenetic testing, hyperbaric chambers, sleep technology and infrared saunas as part of its comprehensive wellness offering for tourists.

The new Wafaifo Resort Hoi An in Vietnam, which opens 1 September, has announced an ambitious three-stage health and spa rollout that will greatly enhance wellness, spa and medical options for tourists visiting Vietnam.

The latest health technology and international partnerships will give visitors to Hoi An and the greater Danang area access to a range of wellness and spa services not found elsewhere in the whole central region of the country.

Epigenetic testing

From 1 September, guests at the new 134-room and suite lifestyle resort can use the Wellness at Wafaifo facility to receive a detailed health diagnostic report using epigenetic testing. In the process, hair follicles are analysed by an S-drive computer which connects to a laboratory in Germany. Within minutes, guests receive a detailed 30-plus page report which assesses 800 personal markers.

The resulting information and scores are presented in graph form and linked to reports on the guest’s gut, circulatory and immune systems. Items are classified as “priority”, “advisory”, or “consider”. A medical consultant at the centre will go through the results with the guest.

“The reports are a quick and effective way to obtain an overview of underlying issues,” said Ms Thanh Nguyen, Director of Spa and Wellness at Wafaifo. “The reports will suggest a plan of action to correct those challenges that are impacting the health of guests.”

Hyperbaric chambers

Beyond epigenetic testing, the new wellness centre in the resort will help guests and patients slow the ageing process, improve concentration, increase energy and stamina and assist recovery from jet lag and stress by offering sessions in AirPod hyperbaric chambers. Exposure in the chambers to heightened levels of oxygen and hydrogen nurtures every healing process in the body.

Infrared saunas will help lower blood pressure and help detoxification and weight loss. Hygienic, electronically controlled ice baths will also reduce blood pressure, improve circulation, flush toxins and reduce inflammation and swelling.

Sleep technology

Guests can also benefit from a Nu Calm sleep and restoration experience in their room by using a headset, eye mask and specially-designed ‘anti-gravity’ chair to induce a meditative state of wellbeing and deep relaxation.

On opening in September, Wellness at Wafaifo will have the most advanced gym in the Unesco heritage city of Hoi An. Personal fitness consultants, trained on the Precor gym equipment used in the centre, will help guests achieve maximum benefits.

International partnerships

In addition to world-class gym equipment and technology-led health diagnostics and interventions, Wafaifo Resort has announced a partnership with Kerstin Florian for body treatments and facials, and with Margaret Dabbs of London for luxury manicures and pedicures.

“Our wellness offering at Wafaifo Resort derives from the latest smart technology that augments the eternal importance of sleep, nutrition, exercise, health and mental wellbeing,” said Pieter van der Hoeven, Managing Director of Wafaifo.

Wafaifo Resort Hoi An
The resort is putting together a team of doctors, nurses, healers and trainers to build personalised wellness programmes for each individual using the facility.

“Our goal is to help visitors achieve their own health objectives, be it weight loss, beauty, anti ageing, performance enhancement, physical or spiritual well being,” said Mr van der Hoeven.

Wafaifo Resort will announce phase II of its new, transformative, technology-led health and wellness services in August, and phase III early in 2025.

A "ghost" has been spotted in The Rocks, Sydney

 The Fortune of War Hotel
On the night of the Wednesday 19th of June, It was spotted by a group of people above Sydney's oldest pub, and The Rocks has released an official statement.

Could it be the Ghost of the unnamed Sailor who was murdered in the early 18th century?

In the heart of The Rocks, above the fortune of war bar, where the ghost was spotted, once was a sailor's hostel with a reputation for illicit activities, including a rumored brothel where a sailor met a tragic end at the hands of a prostitute.

Legend has it that the sailor's spirit lingers, in the buildings. Stories of ghostly encounters have been passed down through the generations, with reports in the local Sydney gazette of eerie footsteps and mysterious sightings in the dark of night.

The ghost of the sailor is said to only appear to women, scaring them with his spectral presence roaming within the old buildings. To this day, guests and staff claim to hear his ghostly footsteps, a chilling reminder of the tragic tale.

The history of the sailor's hostel continues to captivate and intrigue those who pass by, a reminder of the past that refuses to be forgotten. And so, the legend of the sailor's ghost lives on, haunting the streets of The Rocks for all eternity.

Laos govt course for growth in 2024 with focus on tourism and infrastructure development despite economic challenges

Laos
Laos continues to face economic challenges in 2024, including surging inflation, a scarcity of labour, and an expanding trade deficit.

In response, the nation has initiated the Visit Lao Year 2024 campaign, turning to tourism as a key strategy to overcome economic obstacles and lay the groundwork for a prosperous Asean chairmanship in 2024.

Besides this main project, the government's measures is to improve public transport accessibility, with a focus on simplifying ticket sales for the Laos-China Railway.

The plan also included completing infrastructure projects such as roads and airports, restoring highways damaged by natural disasters, and resolving the labor shortage in the hospitality sector.

But despite numerous economic challenges, Laos has achieved noteworthy success in curbing its inflation rate. Initially recorded at a staggering 40.30 percent in January, the latest December inflation report reveals a significant reduction, with the rate now resting at 24.3 percent.

In response to the surging inflation rate, the Bank of the Lao PDR (BOL) has outlined a strategic goal to bring inflation down to 9 percent or another single-digit figure by the conclusion of 2024.

The central bank is set to bolster the enforcement of monetary policy, with a focus on increasing the domestic money supply, channeling export income into the banking system, and harmonizing currency exchange rates with market mechanisms. Complementary efforts will concentrate on fostering greater flexibility in foreign currency exchange and elevating the quality of services provided by commercial banks.

In another noteworthy development this year, Laos was appointed the Asean Chair for 2024. The official handover ceremony took place during the closing of the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia, on September 7.

Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone received the Asean Chairmanship gavel from Indonesian President Joko Widodo during the ceremony. In his pledge, Prime Minister Siphandone expressed his commitment to foster a more connected and resilient region during Laos’ chairmanship in 2024.

As preparations intensify for both the Asean Chairmanship and Visit Laos Year 2024, the Department of Information, Culture, and Tourism in Vientiane Capital is closely monitoring the enhancement of hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions. This is part of the comprehensive preparations to host high-level meetings and a greater influx of foreign tourists in the upcoming year.

The department is placing emphasis on the renovation of key tourist attractions in Vientiane Capital, including landmarks such as Pha That Luang Stupa, Ho Phrakeo Museum, Sisaket Temple, and Patuxai Monument.

On a regional level, Laos is determined to carry on Indonesia’s initiatives to build a more connected and resilient Asean amidst widespread concerns about the unresolved crisis in Myanmar, which continues to pose a significant challenge for the region.

Nevertheless, Laos remains committed to contributing to the collective efforts aimed at strengthening Asean. - Laotian Times

Mulpha expands superyacht capacity at Sanctuary Cove Marina in the lead up to Brisbane Olympics

Sanctuary Cove Marina
Sanctuary Cove Marina has commenced the next stage of its expansion to cater for local and international demand for berths, particularly for superyachts in the lead up to the Brisbane Olympics in 2032.

Development of the J Pier will see the addition of 25 new berths in the northern section of the marina basin with 10 x 30 metre berths, 15 x 18m berths and 18 jet ski docks. Superior Jetties has been contracted with construction expected to be completed later this year, with the new Pier to be showcased at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in May 2025.

The Sanctuary Cove Marina forms part of Mulpha’s broader investment in the InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort, Marina Village, Country Club and the Sanctuary Cove Residential Estate.

Mulpha Chief Executive Officer Greg Shaw said: “Our ongoing investment in the marina is crucial to our strategy to cater for the growing demand for world class berthing, leisure and hospitality facilities that make Sanctuary Cove Southeast Queensland’s premier lifestyle and leisure destination.

“Providing our yachting clients with great marina facilities and direct access to world class retail, 5-star hotel, fitness, golf and leisure facilities has been a winning formula”.

“Occupancy rates across the Gold Coast remain high and we are seeing increasing demand for larger boats as evidenced at the recent Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. Strong sales by our exhibitors at recent Boat shows also means that there will be ongoing arrivals of newly manufactured larger vessels over the coming years”

“As we rapidly approach the 2032 Olympics, we anticipate that demand, particularly for larger yachts, will continue to build. This makes it imperative that we continue to plan and build premium quality berths for the Australian and International market.”

Steve Sammes, General Manager of Mulpha Sanctuary Cove Marina, said “The demand from larger vessels on our coastline has continued to increase. Southeast Queensland’s Gold Coast is now globally recognised as Australia’s major marine industry hub and cruising destination for superyachts,” said Mr Sammes.

“Once J Pier is complete, we will have 63 berths for superyachts across the marina”.

“Pier C was completed at the end of 2022, with 31 berths from 18 to 25m and is currently fully occupied with permanent customers. The proposed 30m berths will also cater for vessels transiting south from Asia and up and down the Australian coast. Our location is also ideal for vessels transiting to the Gold Coast Marine Precinct for refit and maintenance”.

“Sanctuary Cove as a whole, has been collaboratively working on ensuring unique customer service and experiences for vessel owners, captains, crew, and guests when they arrive. We are proud to offer a destination where you can berth, stay, and experience the best of local attractions with ease and convenience. Our berthing packages also include unique golfing, fitness, hotel and retail benefits to ensure our customers can experience the Sanctuary Cove lifestyle”

Rural tourism sees robust growth

Tourists and villagers raise a toast on Tuesday during a fish-themed
banquet in Dongheng village in Huzhou, Zhejiang province.
XIE SHANGGUO/FOR CHINA DAILY
After experiencing a three-year hit due to COVID-19, China's homestay industry has shown strong recovery in 2023, thanks to the growth of tourism in rural areas.

According to a recent report by the travel portal Trip.com Group, bookings of rural tourism products in the first three quarters of this year were roughly 2.6 times the number in the same period of 2019, before the COVID-19 outbreak.

In addition, the number of homestays available on the travel platform grew 44 percent, the highest in five years, reaching about 330,000 in 2023, a sign of the market's good prospects and the confidence in the future development of rural tourism.

Li Minfei, a 35-year-old from Beijing, now prefers homestays to fancy hotels, saying they offer a "memorable" experience and he feels more at home there.

"Homestays are always my first choice when I plan to visit rural destinations. It's like being a guest in someone's home, where you can see different interior designs resulting from the cultural background and customs of the homestay's operators," he said.

Li used to favor five-star hotels but grew weary of the monotonous experiences in what he called the "standard rooms".

"There is no doubt that five-star hotels have good services, better than homestays. But the lack of human interaction makes the living experience not that impressive to me. Also, the hotels are usually located in downtown areas, so it takes time to travel to rural destinations, which is not that convenient," Li added.

"I still remember my four-day-and-three-night stay at a homestay in Dali, Yunnan province, in September. The breakfast was cooked by the homestay's staff members — some middle-aged aunts from the local village. They are not as professional as hotel staff, but they cooked very delicious meals, and we can talk like friends sitting at the table. They made my travel memorable," he added.

A report on rural tourism development by Yunnan's Culture and Tourism Department said that in the first 10 months of this year, villages in the province received about 454 million visits, a year-on-year increase of around 38 percent, which generated about 227.9 billion yuan ($32 billion) in revenue, a nearly 27 percent increase. The number of visits and amount of revenue both outperformed the figures for 2019.

Huangshan, in East China's Anhui province, has also seen good results from rural tourism and homestays. The city is famous for its mountainous views and traditional culture and architecture.

Huangshan has more than 3,100 homestays, which registered more than 3.3 million visits in 2022 and brought in tourism-related revenue of 6.5 billion yuan, according to He Yi, the city's mayor.

"As the homestay industry has seen continuous prosperity in recent years, villages have embraced more talent, financial investment and information from outside. More young people and entrepreneurs have established businesses and enjoy life in the countryside," he told Xinhua News Agency in a recent interview.

Bookings at rural homestays that offer handicrafts or agricultural experiences favored by travelers, such as pottery workshops and picking fruits and vegetables, have seen substantial growth, according to homestay platform Tujia.

Long Fei, a postdoctoral researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' National Academy of Economic Strategy, said that after extensive development over the past decade, the country's homestays, with their unique advantages, have strengthened and diversified their competition with traditional hotels.

She said that homestay operators have been exploring new ways of doing business and making profits, and have begun to offer more personalized and special experiences to travelers.

Shi Meili, a 31-year-old from Xijingyu village in Tianjin, said that she has seen her annual income increase by more than 10,000 yuan since starting to work in May 2021 at a homestay operated in the village by travel portal Tuniu.

"I was a factory worker. It's very nice to have the current job (at the homestay), which is well-paid and much closer to my home," she said. "I'm happy to see that more homestays have opened in the village, which offers villagers more job opportunities and improves our quality of life."

Shi is responsible at the homestay for such tasks as informing customers of weather conditions as well as transportation and food arrangements, and helping arrange sightseeing or cultural activities for customers.

Queensland felt the impact of Australia's contracting domestic holiday market, as competition increases with overseas destinations.

Recorded as part of TRA's International Visitor Survey (IVS) and National Visitor Survey (NVS), the reports provide a snapshot of domestic and overseas tourist activity in Queensland.

Cambodia expects growth in 2024

Cambodia is expected to get more investment
and the manufacturing sector will grow steadily
Though Cambodia could shake off the pandemic blues much earlier than many of its neighbours, the country is facing global headwinds like any other country in the world, especially since the breakout of the Russia-Ukraine war and subsequently by the Israel-Hamas conflict. But the Kingdom is still expected to have an economic growth of 6.6 percent in 2024 as per the government’s estimates, a good one percent more than this year, thanks to the Pentagonal Strategy initiated by Prime Minister Hun Manet.

While giving this optimistic note on the economy last November, Mr Hun Manet maintained that Cambodia is well on its way to become an upper middle-income country by 2030 and an advanced economy by 2050. The Kingdom is projected to graduate from the least developed country status by 2027.

The Southeast Asian nation’s economy is mainly driven by garments, footwear and travel goods (GFT) exports, tourism, agriculture, real estate and construction as has been before. But the decline in the exports in the Kingdom’s main export earner of GFT goods which started in the middle of 2022 continued into 2023 as well and it remains a concern, but the country still managed to cover the deficit by exporting more electric and electronic goods, rubber articles and agricultural products.

In the January to October period of 2023, the GFT exports recorded a decline of 16.90 percent, compared to the same period last year. According to the trade data of the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE), Cambodia exported $8.96 billion worth of GFT goods during the first ten months of the year, a sharp decline from the $10.78 billion the country exported during the same period in 2022.

Despite the GFT woes, Cambodia’s total exports ended up with a marginal rise of 0.2 percent in the January to October period in 2023, compared to the same period last year. Experts attributed this strong showing in other sectors to the vibrant trade mechanisms such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Agreement involving 15 countries, Cambodia China Free Trade Agreement (CCFTA) and the Cambodia Korea Free Trade Agreement (CKFTA). In 2023, Cambodia finalised the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with UAE and also achieved great progress in negotiations on a free trade agreement with India as well.

Meanwhile, in its latest report in November, World Bank projected Cambodia to grow 5.4 percent in 2023, marginally down from the 5.5 percent forecast in May. Compared to the Cambodian government’s projections, the World Bank’s assessment is based on a more cautious, conservative approach.

According to World Bank, the country’s economic growth is expected to pick up to 5.8 percent in 2024 and 6.1 percent in 2025, on anticipated increases in infrastructure investment and benefits from regional trade agreements.

“To sustain economic growth, Cambodia needs to support the private sector as the engine of growth,” World Bank country manager for Cambodia Maryam Salim said at the launch of the November report in Phnom Penh. “Maintaining financial stability is also a priority and more efforts are needed to restore fiscal space,” she added.

The World Bank report said tourism is crucial to Cambodia’s economy, and while international tourists are returning, receipts at major destinations are well below pre-pandemic levels.

Investment in merchandise manufacturing, including of garments, and exports of finished goods have both weakened, reflecting lower global demand and as a result, manufacturing jobs have dropped by five percent.

“Looking ahead, economic growth could further be affected by weakening global demand or renewed oil and food price shocks,” the report said. “Domestically, rising household debt and domestic credit in the real estate sector remain risks,” it added.

Stephen Higgins, Managing Partner of investment and advisory firm Mekong Strategic Partners, is also cautious about the country’s economic prospects in 2024. He told Khmer Times that Cambodia’s economy was not doing well in 2023, and will be lucky to avoid a recession. “It is certainly not growing at five percent or more as some have forecast,” he said.

“Loan arrears are up to 6.4 percent, while VAT collections for the 10 months to October, 2023, were down 13 percent compared to the same period in 2022, and that gives a pretty good indication of how the economy is travelling,” Stephen said.

He, however, rates the new government highly and agrees that political stability has long been a selling point for investing in Cambodia, and that remains the case.

“The issues that Cambodia is facing this year (2023) are very similar to what Vietnam is seeing. Laos is a bit of an economic basket case, Thailand is seeing some major challenges, and Myanmar is toxic from an investment perspective. So, while things are tough in Cambodia right now, it’s not alone,” Stephen noted.

He, however, added that the opportunities in Cambodia far outweigh the challenges, which are mainly short-term ones. “Demographics (young population) will provide a lot of support to Cambodia’s growth trajectory, as will ongoing investments infrastructure,” Stephen remarked.

“I don’t see a lot of upside in the property sector for quite a while, but I’m not too concerned about that. Too much investment was going into unproductive assets that weren’t improving the productive capacity of the economy,” he said as a word of caution.

Businesses, however, have solid faith in Cambodian economy’s resilience despite the global challenges.

Anthony Galliano, Group CEO of Cambodian Investment Management Holding, rightly pointed out that as the Cambodian economy is developing fast, it has greater exposure to global economic trends and geopolitical risks.

“For example, the performance of the Chinese economy has a great impact on Cambodia ever than before. China, which is the largest Foreign Direct Investor in Cambodia, is grappling with its own economic challenges, particularly in real estate, construction and banking all which are aligned historically with FDI in Cambodia,” Anthony said.

“These factors are impacting the Kingdom’s economy more substantially than in the past. The recovery in tourism, while gradual, remains tepid int terms of numbers and diversity, with a concentration of tourism from bordering countries. The real estate, and by default construction sector, are nearing a low point in a cycle, dealing with high inventories and sluggish demand,” he said.

Post-Covid there was a surge in demand in exports as US consumers went on a buying spree. This has peaked and is returning to normal growth. The geopolitical risks of the Russia and Ukraine conflict, and the Israeli-Hamas war are impacting all economies, including Cambodia, Anthony said.

According to him, despite all these factors, the Kingdom is expected to grow about five percent in 2023 which is a testament to the economy’s resilience and the competency of the government.

“This positions the Kingdom as one of the best growing economies in 2023 and Cambodia remains one of the most attractive investment destinations in the world. I expect growth to exceed six percent in 2024 with a mild recovery in real estate, increased export activity, and an improvement in tourism. The government policies on the table should also kick in and stir economic growth and promote a more attractive proposition for foreign investors,” he said.

Anthony was also emphatic about the significance of the peaceful transition of power in 2023 which has been met with a welcoming reception and enthusiasm, excitement, and hope. “There are expectations that the Kingdom is entering the next phase of its development as Cambodia accelerates toward an upper middle-income status. It is evident and visible that the new government is producing a clear economic pathway for growth and prosperity of the country, underpinned by transparent and coherent plans and policies. I am sensing great excitement from the people about the future of the nation and overwhelming confidence in the leadership,” he added.

Senior economist KY Sereyvath, the Director General of the Institute of China Studies at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, too believes that the economy would grow only around five percent even though World Bank and ADB forecast 5.4 percent, due to obstacles in trade.

Sereyvath, however, sees a rebound in Cambodian exports in 2024 “as we can see good signs already.” Cambodian economy, he said, will grow as there will be a recovery across the world. New government policies will also help.

“The country is expected to get more investment and the manufacturing sector will grow steadily, especially SMEs. We can also see signs of a surge in tourism,” he said, adding that a major challenge will be the real estate market as investments in the sector will take another six to eight years to give returns.

Thourn Sinan, Chairman of the Cambodia Chapter of Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), said that the tourism sector has shown resilience in 2023 with efforts to recover from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tourism Ministry reports showed that in the first 10 months of 2023, some 4.4 million foreign tourists visited Cambodia. By the end of the year, the figure could cross five million, but this will still be short from the 6.6 million visits in the pre-pandemic 2019.

According to Sinan, the country has made progress in reopening its borders to international visitors, implementing health and safety measures, and promoting tourism destinations. “The prospects for next year are positive, with the potential for further recovery as travel restrictions ease and consumer confidence improves. Continued investment in infrastructure, promotion of sustainable tourism, and diversification of tourist offerings could contribute to sustained growth in the sector,” he told Khmer Times.

Sinan also termed Cambodia’s tourism performance as competitive within the region. While countries like Thailand and Vietnam have traditionally attracted larger numbers of international tourists, Cambodia’s unique cultural and historical attractions, such as the Angkor Wat complex, offer a distinct appeal to travellers. In recent years, Cambodia has also made efforts to develop coastal and ecotourism, contributing to its overall appeal as a tourist destination, he pointed out.

In his view, despite the positive outlook, Cambodia’s tourism sector faces several challenges in the coming years. These include shortage of infrastructure such as roads and accommodation for a growing number of visitors and inadequacy of service providers in provincial destinations.

“Additionally, ensuring sustainable tourism practices, preserving cultural heritage sites, and managing environmental impacts will be crucial. The country will also need to focus on diversifying its tourism offerings and enhancing the overall visitor experience to remain competitive in the region,” Sinan said.

The new airport in Siem Reap, which started the operations in October 2023 and the Visit Siem Reap 2024 campaign, are expected to greatly boost the arrival of foreign tourists in the New Year.

Gympie passes ‘GO’ with its own dedicated MONOPOLY Board

Mary Valley Rattler
For a town built on the profits of gold, there was probably never a better destination selected by the makers of MONOPOLY for its own dedicated board game.

Gympie is known the “the town that saved Queensland” – because of the contribution to the State’s economy through its gold production - and those halcyon days have been recaptured on the town’s own custom MONOPOLY board.

Fittingly, the launch took place at Gympie’s most significant and enduring tourism attraction (and featured on the MONOPOLY board) - Historical Gympie Station, home of the Mary Valley Rattler.

The Rattler has serviced the region for over 100 years, firstly as a passenger and goods train and more recently as a premium tourist experience.

The Gympie destination MONOPOLY edition was first mooted in June 2023, leading to hundreds of suggestions on what should be included on the board.

After careful deliberation, the custom themed squares and cards were announced along with special gold tokens that players can incorporate into the game, paying tribute to the town’s rich gold mining roots.

Some of Gympie’s most popular tourism destinations such as Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay were included, as were famous attractions such as the Mary Valley Rattler and Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum, and events including the Gympie Muster.

The MONOPOLY game first hit shelves in 1935 and since then it has been played by more than one billion people. Today, the game is adored all around the world, being played in 114 countries and enjoyed in over 47 different languages.
