Tobago’s Main Ridge Forest Reserve

Tobago is the smaller of the two Caribbean islands comprising the nation of Trinidad and Tobago. It is known for its wide, sandy beaches and biodiverse tropical rainforest rich in indigenous flora and fauna.

Framed by mountains, the village-like port capital, Scarborough, is anchored by its central food market. Overlooking the city are the 18th-century ruins of Fort King George, now housing the Tobago Museum and its local art and artifacts.

The Main Ridge Forest Reserve was declared a protected rainforest by the English Crown in 1776 and is is the oldest protected piece of land and forest reserve in the western hemisphere.

It is a popular birdwatching site being home to hummingbirds indigenous to Tobago and also also offers lush flora and fauna providing habitat for twelve to sixteen species of mammals.

Tourism Shines with 51st Independence day Celebration of Trinidad and Tobago

Secretary of State, Washington, DC, John Kerry, congratulated the people of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago on the 51st anniversary of independence on August 31 on behalf of President Obama.

This day is celebrated with lot of festivity and spirit. The military styled parade in the day in Queens Park is inspected by the Chief Secretary in Tobago and by the Head of the State in Trinidad. The evening sees a lot of National Award presentation ceremony at the President’s house. These awards are recognition for the local people for their achievements in various occupations. The evening in Queens Park, Savannah displays a lot of firework to celebrate the occasion. These shows are quite popular with the crowd that starts coming in early to get the best sight. Independence for any country is a gift to its citizens.

Trinidad and Tobago were one of those countries in the British colony who became a part of the post war, decolonization process. They got their independence on 31st August 1962. This day goes down in the history of Trinidad and Tobago as a very important day. It was on this day when the Union Jack was lowered to declare Trinidad and Tobago an independent nation. The whole week is rejoiced with a lot of celebration and events.

The Trinidad and Tobago 51st Independence Gala and Scholarship Awards was celebrated to respect the nation’s heritage. The honored speakers were Dr. Neil Parson, Ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago and Dr. Anil Ramnanan, Consulate General of Trinidad and Tobago.

The 51st Anniversary of Trinidad and Tobago’s Independence provides an opportunity to recognize the significance of their contributions to the quality and character of life, and, through events and activities, for all people to gain a greater appreciation of Trinidad and Tobago’s history and traditions, and of the role Trinidadians have played, and will continue to play, in the society.

A ten-race programme has been framed by Arima Race Club racing secretary Robin Jaisingh, for the Independence Day holiday, Saturday, at Santa Rosa Park, Arima.

San Fernando Fashion Week, Trinidad

Come June, San Fernando’s fashion designers will get a chance to display their talents and creativity at the San Fernando Fashion Week, which will be staged over a three day period from June 24 to 26 . San Fernando will be turned into the fashion capital of Trinidad.

The brainchild of designer Deron Attz and his company Simpli Smooth Productions, San Fernando Fashion week is celebrating its fifth year of existence. The theme this year is “Passion for Fashion” and the event will see the merging of designers, cutters/ stitchers and the retailers in a one-day workshop shop for expansion of the local fashion industry.  

On June 25, garment constructor, hair dressers, make up artiste, jewelry makers, craftsmen, retailers/buyers and designers are invited to the Talk Shop/Work Shop at Allison’s Royalty Plaza coffee street, San Fernando. 

The public will have the opportunity to witness this fashion weekend on June 26. It will be hosted at the Paria Suite Hotel & Conference Centre and will include a wealth of local and foreign designers . This will be a red carpet affair where patrons are encouraged to hit the red carpet in local designer’s clothing.

San Fernando Fashion Week 2011 is geared towards bringing new works by new designers to the forefront as well as people who have a talent and have never been given that chance to show in an event such as Fashion Week, in the hope that they may expand their clientele and also show the level of their work. Some of the designers showing at this year’s show are Meiling , Heather Jones, Ayna Ayoung-Chee, Ecliff Elie, Deron Attzs, Peter Elias, Saleem Samuel, Nel Exclusive Designs, UTT Academy, Rodney Alexander, Ashley Christmas (Tobago), Toxic Boutique, Passion Fruit Designs (Canada), David Rolle (Bahamas) and Miricle Hands Designs (Guyana).
