Booking.com has today released its 2024 Travel Predictions for Australians, with Cairns making its Global Top 10 Trending Travel Destinations next year*.

Alongside the Global Top Trending Destinations, Booking.com also released 7 Travel Predictions for for Aussie travellers in 2024: 

1. Alter Ego Enthusiasts - almost one-third (30%) of Aussies report making up stories about themselves when travelling.
2. Cool-cationers - It’s no surprise that with another El Nino looming, Aussies are looking to beat the heat, with nearly half (42%) reporting climate change will impact the way they holiday next year, and 41% planning on using their holiday to cool off as a result.
3. Surrender Seekers – Over half (57%) of Aussie travellers are leaving their holiday plans up to chance next year, whilst 40% say they would trust AI to plan their holiday.
4. Culinary Excavators - Food is playing a bigger role than ever before with four-fifths (81%) of Aussie travellers wanting to savour indigenous cuisine when exploring.
5. Reboot Retreaters - Aussies are redefining their travel experiences, with sleep tourism (55%), solo travel (50%), and matchmaking holidays (30%) on the rise.
6. A La Carte Affluencers- The impact of the cost of living crisis is leading over half (54%) of travellers to choose their destinations based on economic pressures.

Booking.com’s latest global search data also shows that Sydney is now in the top #20 global most searched destinations for check-ins through December to February at #20 and up three places from last year.

‘Trees for Days’ initiative launches to support community and the environment

G Adventures has announced the launch of its new Trees for Days initiative, bringing the empowerment of local communities and protection of the environment and closer together to enact powerful change through travel and tourism.

Announced in Cusco, Peru on World Tourism Day, during the inaugural GX Summit – the first world community tourism summit – Trees for Days asserts G adventures’ commitment to preserving communities and the environment around the world. Moving forward, for every day a traveller is on a G Adventures trip, one tree will be grown, helping to both mitigate carbon emissions and increase support in 17 local communities around the world. The tree-planting projects are in locations that have been severely impacted by climate change through deforestation, or that are currently under threat. By supporting the development of sustainable tourism enterprises within these communities, the travel industry can help protect the environment, as well as create additional income streams for local people, most often benefiting and empowering marginalised Indigenous populations, women, and youth.

In partnership with G Adventures’ non-profit partner Planeterra, which uses community tourism to change lives, and Reforest, which actively supports tree planting and forest conservation work around the world, it is estimated that more than one and a half million trees will be planted each year. Travellers will be able to log into their G Adventures account and keep tabs on their tree grove in terms of how many trees they’ve grown and where they’ve planted their roots.

The small group adventure tour operator has already planted over one million trees after backdating the planting of trees for every day a traveller has joined a trip since 1 January, 2023. Soon, travellers will be able to contribute beyond the end date of their G Adventures trip by continuing to purchase trees in a region of their choice whenever they travel, via their G Adventures account.

Bruce Poon Tip, founder of G Adventures, says the vision for the Trees for Days project is to increase the positive impact customers have when travelling with G Adventures, while at the same time supporting communities impacted by climate change.

“As the pioneers of community tourism, supporting local communities is at the core of our DNA. With the increasing urgency to help our planet, I’m thrilled to be announcing our Trees for Days initiative in partnership with Planeterra and Reforest. Our non-profit partner, Planeterra has been instrumental in sourcing the community based tree planting projects, and Reforest - which we invested in last year - is providing the technology platform.

“Our travellers care about making a difference when they travel - and they do that simply by booking a tour with G Adventures. Together, we will address how community tourism can play an important role in helping the planet heal, while uplifting local communities, through reforestation and positive local impact,” says Poon Tip.

Jamie Sweeting, president of Planeterra, says the Trees for Days initiative is a win-win solution for all parties involved.

“The planting of trees not only contributes to the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but it helps promote healthier landscapes and ecosystems such as wetlands, grasslands, and forests, and provides crucial habitats, food, and shelter for wildlife, thus helping to maintain biodiversity.

“Beyond that, helping local environments grow and flourish means they become more resilient to extreme weather events, which protects - and even helps develop - local communities and their sources of income, especially in rural areas. More trees also means cleaner air, and a reduction in the effects of extreme heat,” says Sweeting.

Daniel Walsh, founder of Reforest, added that the Trees for Days programme is a great example of a corporate reforestation program that is not only looking to do some real good for climate, nature and local communities, but will also give customers a very engaging and personalised way to connect with that impact.

“Travellers increasingly want to feel like they are leaving a positive footprint, so a key benefit of this program is that they can feel that sense of ownership of the trees planted for them,” says Walsh.

The World Tango Championships, Buenos Aires

The 20th anniversary of The World Tango Championships will be held in Buenos Aires. 

Professional dancers from around the world compete in categories like salon tango, stage tango, and milonga.

Where to travel according to the Australian Dollar

With the European summer coming up, many are looking to escape off to the popular beaches of Spain, the hustle and bustle of metropolitan London, or the clubs of Greece. Although rich in history and culture, the current exchange rate for the Euro is less than ideal.

Global Travel Site Skyscanner recently revealed that despite facing a rising cost of living, majority of Aussies (97%) still plan to take at least one trip abroad this year, with one-third (33%) looking to choose a destination where their currency will go further. *

The Patagonia Park Argentina is a lesser known area of Patagonia, and one that is different to that found in Chile. 

Patagonia Park Argentina brings together local communities, government institutions, and conservation organisations in a conservation model in which wildlife and people thrive by protecting, restoring, and experiencing the natural ecosystems that sustain them. 

Recent investment from the Freyja Foundation and Rewilding Argentina has resulted in new attractions, allowing tourists to experience its full beauty and natural phenomena. 

The Cueva de las Manos 

The Cueva de las Manos (The Cave of the Hands) is a site with 9,300 year old cave paintings from ancient indigenous communities. 

The cave is located in the east side of the park, next to Portal Cañadón Pinturas, one of the three main entrances to Patagonia Park Argentina.

Walking trails 

Some 60km of new trails spanning have already been created giving the chance to explore the terrain with. 

The trails are expertly built by a team of veteran trail builders who specialise in creating hiking routes that blend into the landscape. 

The terrain is different across Patagonia and short walks and longer treks offer the chance to get close to native flora and fauna. 

The shortest trail within Patagonia Park Argentina is 2.6km and can be completed within 1hr. 

The longest is a 25km circuit, taking 6 hours to complete for experienced hikers, and includes more remote landscapes and canyons. 

Camping out 

Three new campsites allow travellers to sleep out with the chance to camp inside of a canyon at Portal Cañadón Pinturas or pitch up amongst the wilderness at La Señalada. 

All campsites allow users to cook on an open fire and enjoy locally brewed beer or a glass of Argentinian wine. 

There is also La Posta de Los Toldos, a solar-powered eco-lodge, open during peak summer season (November – April). 

Stargazing 

In November 2023 (the start of the next summer season), travellers will be able to visit the new Planetarium and Interpretation Centre, funded by the late Argentinian scientist and philanthropist, Elsa Rosenvasser Feher. 

The wildlife 

The Patagonia Park Argentina is run by Rewilding Argentina, an organisation dedicated to re-populating key species crucial to local ecosystems. 

The puma, guanaco, viscacha and condor (the largest bird on earth) are some of the animals and birds that can be viewed. 

Private tours for puma spotting are also available. 

Rewilding Argentina 

The Park project is led by Rewilding Argentina’s work in the park which is supported through a grantee relationship by the Freyja Foundation and the Wyss Foundation. 

The rewilding program is responsible for the rewilding of the highly endangered Huemul deer, Puma, Guanaco, Austral Rail, Southern Rhea, Wolffsohn’s viscacha, Coypu and Pampas Cat. 

Rewilding Argentina plans to extend these efforts to rewilding the Andean Condor as the ninth native species. 

The Freyja Foundation 

The Freyja Foundation is a private, charitable organisation dedicated to supporting scalable and lasting conservation solutions that protect wild places and combat the climate crisis.

A more sustainable traveler experience

Nearly one in ten accommodation award recipients globally (122,095) have also been recognized with a Travel Sustainable badge for their efforts to operate more sustainably. In fact, Travel Sustainable accommodations were three times more likely to receive a Traveller Review Award 2023, compared to those not being recognized with a Travel Sustainable badge. Out of all accommodation types, hotels had the highest share of Travel Sustainable accommodations (15%) receiving a Traveller Review Award 2023.

Apartments and homes continue to shine as the most-awarded property type globally, apartments take the top spot for the sixth year in a row, with a grand total of 629,421 partners being recognized for their efforts in the 2023 edition of the Traveller Review Awards. For the very first time in the history of the awards, holiday homes (177,795) have claimed the second spot from hotels (172,036), with guest houses (91,635) and bed and breakfasts (78,247) rounding out the top five. In Australia, holiday homes took out the number one spot closely followed by apartments, with motels coming in third.

Booking.com has today announced the recipients of its 10th annual Traveller Review Awards, where Tasmania has once again secured a spot in the top 10 most welcoming regions in the world, proving Australia’s southern charm still reigns supreme.

Drawing upon more than 232 million verified reviews from real travelers with over 18,000 awards delivered to deserving Australian partners, the Booking.com Traveller Review Awards include awards such as the 2022 Most Welcoming Places in Australia. When diving into the individual aspects of their stays that guests valued most at the 1,259,594 properties receiving a Traveller Review Award 2022, staff (9.0) cleanliness (8.9) and location (8.9) received the highest average marks globally. This is well above other aspects evaluated, such as facilities (8.6) or value for money (8.5), demonstrating the importance of those welcoming, friendly interactions during the stay, as well as health and hygiene in light of the evolving status of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Holiday home and transport providers in the spotlight
Holiday homes are also top spot in Australia when it comes to the accommodation type category, with 4,991 being recognised, closely followed by apartments, receiving 4,626 awards.

For the third year in a row, rental car and airport taxi providers are also being recognised for their excellent service and smooth travel experiences, with Australia taking out the fifth most transport awards across 160 countries worldwide. Spain leads with 220 rental car pick-up locations receiving a 2022 award, followed by Italy (177), France (141), the United States (108) and Australia (98).

Crystal Expedition Cruises Adds New 10- to 15-Night Voyages to Crystal Endeavor’s Schedule for Spring 2022

Crystal has announced it has added a series of 10- to 15-night voyages visiting spectacular ports in Antarctica, South America, and Europe to Crystal Endeavor’s schedule for spring 2022 following the ship’s highly successful season of Antarctica voyages that began in November.

Currently open for sale, the new voyages will take place from March 1 to April 29, 2022, collectively visiting 31 ports in nine countries across three continents with extended stays and several overnight calls in charming and historic cities, including Málaga and Seville in Spain, as well as Monaco, Monte Carlo, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Puerto Del Rosario in the Canary Islands.

The new voyages replace four cruises to West Africa that have been canceled given ongoing uncertainty of the Omicron variant and its potential impact within the region. Following these newly added voyages, Crystal Endeavor will operate its previously announced schedule of voyages to Europe, Iceland and Greenland, including summer Arctic voyages, beginning April 29, 2022, before heading back for another season in Antarctica in November 2022.
