Avani Launches "Travelling Traditions" Tying Festive Stays to Local Ritual

Maldivian Boduberu drumming
This festive season, Avani Hotels & Resorts invites travellers to discover the joy of celebrating like a local with Travelling Traditions, a round-up of authentic experiences across Asia, Europe, Africa and the Indian Ocean. Instead of familiar routines, guests are encouraged to step into the customs and rituals that make each destination unique, from eating twelve lucky grapes at midnight in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol, to joining Boduberu drumming circles on sugar-loaf shores in the Maldives.

Bangkok, Thailand

At Avani Sukhumvit Bangkok, the city’s festive mood is shaped by timeless traditions. Locals visit temples to make merit, lighting incense and offering lotus flowers for blessings in the year ahead. Streets and markets bustle with flower garlands, sweets and firecrackers as the countdown approaches, before fireworks ripple across the skyline on New Year’s Eve. Guests can soak up the city’s vibrant atmosphere at Avani Sukhumvit, pausing for a Festive Enchantment Afternoon Tea complete with whimsical desserts, golden savouries and a toast to the season.

Khao Lak, Thailand

Buddhist Monks
At Avani+ Khao Lak Resort, festive celebrations blend with the spirit of southern Thailand. Families in nearby villages welcome the new year by offering food to monks in morning ceremonies, while evenings on the beach glow with candlelit picnics and the release of paper lanterns into the sky. Guests are invited to share in these simple but meaningful customs, while AvaniKids and Teens Club keep younger travellers entertained with seasonal crafts and activities. The warm Andaman coastline and star-filled skies provide the perfect backdrop for family gatherings and new beginnings.

Luang Prabang, Laos

Boun Ok Phansa festival
Luang Prabang, Laos
At Avani+ Luang Prabang, guests move in step with a UNESCO World Heritage town shaped by ceremony, craft and community. At dawn, saffron-robed monks walk silently through the streets to receive alms, a ritual that has taken place for centuries. As the festive season unfolds, the night market becomes a lively stage for lanterns, handmade crafts and traditional Lao music. Visitors strolling between stalls discover silks, carvings and street food, creating a festive atmosphere rooted in heritage and community.

Fares, Maldives

At Avani+ Fares Maldives Resort, "Tales of the Maldives" brings the island’s cultural heritage into focus. Guests can join Boduberu drumming circles on the beach, savour Maldivian dishes cooked over coconut husks, or take part in artisan workshops that showcase traditional lacquer work and weaving. Legends handed down through generations are shared in evening storytelling sessions beneath the stars. Younger guests join foam parties and try traditional Maldivian dhoni boat building at AvaniKids and Teens Club. Recently named Best Beach Resort at the TTM Awards, Avani+ Fares is home to a vibrant house reef where parrotfish, rays and turtles create a natural celebration of their own

Victoria Falls, Zambia

Avani Victoria Falls Resort
Avani Victoria Falls Resort
offers guests the chance to experience the holidays in the heart of Africa, just steps from one of the world’s natural wonders. Choirs sing carols in both English and local languages, filling the warm summer evenings with song. Nearby craft markets display handmade baskets, carvings and beadwork, offering gifts that are as meaningful as they are beautiful. Families gather for braais by the Mukuni Boma with the scent of the grill on the breeze and the thunder of the Falls in the background.

Madrid, Spain

Avani Alonso Martínez Madrid connects guests with Spain’s New Year’s Eve ritual in Puerta del Sol, where twelve grapes are eaten to the clock’s twelve chimes. The same square is home to Kilometre Zero, the starting point for all national roads and a cultural marker at the country’s heart. Another highlight is the San Silvestre Vallecana on 31 December, an annual 10km road race that draws thousands for Madrid’s year-end run. AvaniFit connects guests through guided running tours and personal training, pairing race preparation with city discovery led by a local guide. Throughout December, markets brim with turrón, churros and festive lights, setting a classic seasonal mood.

Discover Zambia’s Living Heritage Through Boma Dining at Avani Victoria Falls

As Zambia’s dry season begins and the mist lifts from Victoria Falls, Avani Victoria Falls Resort invites guests to step beyond the waterfall and experience a cultural immersion that leaves a lasting impression. The resort’s signature Boma Dinner offers a powerful journey into the heart of Zambian tradition, blending ancestral flavours, storytelling and music in an unforgettable riverside setting. Whether travelling solo, as a couple or with family, the experience offers a meaningful way to connect with Zambia and create lasting memories.

Taking place every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday night at the resort’s Mukuni Boma restaurant, the open-air experience has become a highlight for guests visiting the UNESCO-listed Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park during Zambia’s prime safari season. As temperatures drop and skies clear, July through October offers ideal conditions for wildlife viewing and reveals the dramatic rock formations behind Victoria Falls’ receding waters - a striking transformation locals sometimes call “the Skeleton of the Falls.”

Set against the banks of the Zambezi River, the Boma Dinner is an invitation to connect with the community. Guests are welcomed with a local brew before being guided through a four-course menu featuring indigenous ingredients and Pan-African staples. From the spicy, orchid-based chikanda to ifisashi - a rich peanut-and-greens stew - each dish reveals the culinary ingenuity passed down through generations.

As lanterns glow and drums begin to beat, the evening unfolds with live storytelling, bush songs and dance by local performers, including the acclaimed Amakhezi troupe. Guests are encouraged to join the dancers or take up the djembe drum themselves, creating a participatory rhythm that breaks down barriers between visitor and host.

The experience taps into a growing global appetite for experiential dining, as travellers seek more meaningful, authentic connections with the places they visit. Whether enjoying the Boma Dinner as part of a family adventure or a solo journey of discovery, guests are invited to engage with Zambia’s cultural heritage in a truly immersive way.

Located just steps from Victoria Falls with unlimited guest access to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Avani Victoria Falls provides a dynamic base for exploration, from wildlife safaris to cultural discovery. With the roar of the falls as a backdrop and tradition served by firelight, the Boma Dinner promises a night of connection, celebration and Zambian soul.

The Family Getaway package at Avani Victoria Falls Resort starts from USD 720 per room, per night, for a family of four sharing an Avani Family Room with daily breakfast included. For couples and solo travellers, rates start from USD 270 per room, per night, inclusive of breakfast. All rates are inclusive of taxes and fees.

Elewana Collection Revamps Two Safari Icons in Kenya

Renovations at Elewana Elsa's Kopje
Refreshed design and elevated dining concepts bring new energy to the legendary Elsa’s Kopje and Elephant Pepper Camp

Elewana Collection, an operator of award-winning boutique lodges and safari camps across Kenya and Tanzania, has unveiled significant renovations and refreshed culinary concepts at two of its iconic Kenyan properties: Elsa’s Kopje Meru, and Elephant Pepper Camp in the Maasai Mara.

Elewana, part of international hospitality group Minor Hotels, is known for its commitment to conservation, community, and classic East African hospitality. The latest enhancements exemplify that ethos, elevating the guest experience while remaining deeply rooted in each property’s natural surroundings, cultural heritage, and distinctive character.

Elsa’s Kopje Meru: A Living Legacy, Reimagined

Perched dramatically above the savannah in Meru National Park, Elewana Elsa’s Kopje is a lodge steeped in history. Named after the orphaned lioness made famous by conservationists George and Joy Adamson in the 1996 film Born Free, the lodge is built into the rocky hillside above the Adamsons’ former camp. Since opening in 1999, Elsa’s Kopje has become an icon of responsible luxury and timeless safari charm.

The latest renovations pay tribute to this legacy while enhancing comfort and design throughout the lodge. All guest suites now feature upgraded furniture, Nero-finished bathroom floors, and reimagined lighting that accentuates the lodge’s organic architecture and expansive views. The expansive Private House has also been elevated with a luxurious new bath and redesigned outdoor shower.

Communal areas reflect the same attention to detail: the main and private pools have been refinished with terrazzo tiles, offering a refreshed setting for relaxation between game drives. A new in-house sundowner space provides the perfect stage for evening G&Ts overlooking Meru’s vast wilderness, with a new outdoor cinema screening the film, Born Free, set to be launched in the area within the month. The spa has been expanded, offering a more spacious retreat for wellness rituals.

“Careful attention has been paid to ensure the refreshed Elsa’s Kopje still holds the heart and soul of what makes it so special,” said Callum Oliver, Operations Manager Kenya at Elewana Collection. “Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, the updates enhance the comfort and elegance of the lodge without losing the deep connection to the wilderness and history of Meru.”

The lodge’s updated culinary direction celebrates Kenya’s rich gastronomic traditions, blending comfort and authenticity. From slow-simmered local stews and grilled meats to elevated breakfasts featuring yoghurt parfaits, fresh pastries, and vibrant garden fare, each dish is a reflection of the land and its culture.

Elephant Pepper Camp: Bush Luxury Meets Fire-Cooked Flavour

Nestled in the Mara North Conservancy in the Maasai Mara National Reserve in southwestern Kenya, Elewana Elephant Pepper Camp has long been a favourite for safari purists and those seeking a close-to-nature experience with minimal environmental impact.

The final phase of the camp’s multi-stage renovation is now complete, bringing a full upgrade to guest tents with new furnishings that retain the camp’s rustic elegance while adding modern comfort. The arrival area has been reimagined to enhance the sense of welcome, while the mess and bar tents now feature new furniture for an elevated communal atmosphere.

Crowning the transformation is the debut of ‘Elephant and Pepper’, a bold new culinary concept centred on the primal art of fire cooking. Drawing inspiration from African bushcraft and global smokehouse techniques, the open-flame experience showcases slow-smoked meats, ember-roasted vegetables, and fire-grilled seafood infused with rich local spices and cooked over aromatic acacia wood. Traditional braai equipment ensures authentic preparation, while smoke-infused cocktails and foraged ingredients create a sensory journey that connects guests with the land’s raw power and beauty.

“These renovations are more than just cosmetic upgrades – they’re about deepening the connection between guest and place,” said Kieren Day, Chief Operating Officer of Elewana Collection. “Elsa’s Kopje and Elephant Pepper Camp are two of our most beloved properties, each with a distinctive spirit. These enhancements honour their stories while enriching every aspect of the guest experience.”

Gok and Gek
Avani+ Koh Lanta Krabi Resort, nestled in the serene landscape of Koh Lanta, is embracing its connection to nature in a heartwarming way with the celebration of its resident hornbill couple, Gok and Gek. The pair of oriental pied hornbills have made their home in a tree overlooking the azure waters of the Andaman Sea, which has become affectionately known as the "Hornbill Hotel" by the resort's staff. This celebration, which took place on February 13th, coincided with Love Hornbills Day, and marks the beginning of a series of new guest experiences designed to promote wildlife conservation and sustainable tourism.

The Hornbill Hotel is more than just a quirky name; it symbolizes the resort's deep commitment to preserving its natural environment. The tree, perched above the resort's Sea View Pool Villas, offers a stunning perch for Gok and Gek, who have become local celebrities. The resort’s guests are invited to share in the magic of this pair of hornbills and explore Koh Lanta’s vibrant ecosystem through engaging, nature-based activities.

Families are encouraged to participate in the Hornbill Heroes adventure booklet, a fun-filled activity guide that combines creativity and learning. As part of the AvaniKids program, kids can dive into wildlife-themed arts and crafts, and participate in a special bedtime story session featuring When Gok Met Gek, a beautifully illustrated tale by a Thai artist.

The Hornbill celebration is also bringing a playful touch to the resort’s culinary offerings, with guests treated to hornbill-shaped cookies. Families can take memorable photos at various hornbill-inspired Instagram hotspots around the resort, including a vibrant wildlife mural and a special perch beneath the Hornbill Hotel tree, offering a perfect view of the surrounding beauty.

As the day transitions to evening, guests can toast to the unforgettable views with the resort’s signature Hornbill Highball or G+G gin and tonics, or opt for a Beaky Blast mocktail. The drinks, best enjoyed at treetop tables with panoramic views of the Andaman Sea, offer a fitting end to a day of immersive experiences and family fun.

John Roberts, Group Director of Sustainability & Conservation at Minor Hotels, remarked on the resort's commitment to both wildlife and guest experiences: "At Avani+ Koh Lanta Krabi Resort, we strive to nurture the natural surroundings while providing memorable and enriching experiences for our guests. Gok and Gek’s presence is a testament to the flourishing ecosystem here, and we’re thrilled to share the beauty of the local wildlife with everyone who visits."

This celebration is just one example of the resort’s broader sustainability efforts, which include initiatives like the Dugong Food Survival project aimed at restoring essential seagrass beds for the local marine life. Guests can also explore the resort’s Edible Flower Farm, which showcases sustainable farming practices and offers guests unique, farm-to-table culinary experiences.

Avani+ Koh Lanta Krabi Resort’s dedication to integrating conservation and guest enjoyment provides an exceptional opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Koh Lanta, all while contributing to the preservation of its unique ecosystem. Sober Sips: SIN at Avani+ Riverside Bangkok Redefines Rooftop Cocktails with New Zero-Proof Collection

SIN at Avani+ Riverside Bangkok Hotel

Bangkok’s bustling skyline has welcomed a glamorous new rooftop destination: SIN at Avani+ Riverside Bangkok Hotel. Nestled on the 27th floor, this chic venue invites guests to elevate their evenings with stunning views of the Chao Phraya River and a reimagined mixology experience. While SIN’s signature cocktails are a highlight, its standout offering is the innovative “Sober Sips” menu—an elegant, alcohol-free alternative for discerning drinkers who want to indulge without compromise.

A New Era for Rooftop Mixology

Spearheaded by award-winning Head Mixologist Brian Gonzalez Fernandez, SIN’s “Sober Sips” collection is a celebration of craftsmanship and creativity. These alcohol-free cocktails are far from the sugary mocktails of yesteryear. Inspired by themes of sin and desire, each drink is a non-alcoholic rendition of SIN’s signature creations, layered with complexity and depth.

Having honed his craft in London and Madrid, Brian draws on global trends and a sophisticated palate to create drinks that stand on their own. Ingredients like sober whiskey, sober gin, and dealcoholized sparkling wines such as French Bloom Le Blanc add a refined touch. “What started as the Dry January movement has become a lifestyle shift across generations,” notes Brian. “With Sober Sips, I aim to offer everyone the chance to celebrate, connect, and be part of a moment, whether or not they choose to drink alcohol.”

The Art of Alcohol-Free Indulgence

Each Sober Sip is designed with the same precision as traditional cocktails, combining premium ingredients with innovative techniques. Highlights include:

  • Forbidden Nectar: A tantalizing blend of sober whiskey, miso, caramel yogurt, and carrot, offering a unique balance of earthy and sweet notes.
  • The Temptress: A vibrant concoction of sober gin, sober amaretto, raspberry, lemon, matcha, and foam, blending fruitiness with subtle bitterness.

Accompanying the drinks is a curated menu of contemporary bites. From Gillardeau oysters with Hokkaido uni and wasabi mayonnaise to Miyazaki A5 wagyu tartare and gourmet sashimi, each dish is crafted to complement SIN’s cocktails, ensuring an all-encompassing culinary experience.

An Unforgettable Setting

SIN’s atmosphere is as memorable as its menu. The rooftop space features an expansive bar, a spacious terrace, and panoramic views of Bangkok’s glittering skyline. Hypnotic beats from regional and international DJs set the tone for an intimate yet vibrant evening.

The venue accommodates 80 seated guests or 180 standing, making it perfect for both cozy nights out and lively celebrations. SIN’s smart-casual dress code adds to the venue’s sophisticated vibe, with entry limited to those aged 18 and over.
