WILLOUGHBY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ANNOUNCES 2024 SEASON

Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra, Dr. Nicholas Milton AM and Willoughby Mayor, Tanya Taylor proudly announced the 2024 Willoughby Symphony Orchestra season at a launch held today at The Concourse, Chatswood.

Dr Milton said “I am delighted to present the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra’s 2024 season, a line-up of extraordinary musical performances. Our 2024 season-opening Gala concert An Evening with James Bondsets the tone for an exuberant and thrilling year. A massive orchestra brings the most beloved title songs to vivid life, including “Goldfinger," "Nobody Does it Better," “Skyfall," "No Time to Die" and "Diamonds are Forever.”

I will also conduct two “Fifth” symphonies in 2024: Beethoven’s Fifth contains surely the most famous symphonic statement of the entire repertoire, but our audiences will equally be astounded by the raw emotional impact of Shostakovich’s earth-shattering Firth Symphony. As always, the Willoughby Symphony welcomes prodigious Australian soloists, including the remarkable Konstantin Shamray, winner of the First Prize at the Sydney International Piano Competition. Dazzling instrumentalists Winnie Suand Edward Walton represent the next generation of Australian musical stars.

The powerful Willoughby Symphony Choir, under the direction of one of Australia’s leading Choir Masters, Peter Ellis, will feature in an irrepressible Christmas concert and, with our brilliant Associate Conductor Dr Sarah Penicka-Smith, the choir will mount what will surely be a spectacular rendition of Dvořák’s soulful Stabat Mater.

Our eternally popular Last Night of the Proms promises colossal spectacle and jubilation in a special edition concert featuring music from the coronation of King Charles III and a host of special guest artists.

The orchestra also presents a wide range of educational and concert programs for young people and families. Disney’s classic 1989 animation, The Little Mermaid will be projected on the big screen at The Concourse Concert Hall with the complete score being performed live by the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra conducted by the brilliant Vanessa Scammell.

Swiss-funded project helps Quang Nam, Viet Nam develop green tourism

The chief coordinator of the Swiss Tourism for Sustainable Development Project (ST4SD) met with officials of Quang Nam province on May 25 to promote implementation of green and sustainable tourism programs and projects.

According to Vice Director of the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Van Ba Son, Quang Nam province, home to two world culture heritage, namely Hoi An Ancient Town and My Son Sanctuary, and Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An World Biosphere Reserve - the intangible cultural heritage of humanity recognised by UNESCO, boasts great potential for various types of tourism such as agricultural and rural tourism, experience tourism, maritime and culinary tourism, and tourism associated with biodiversity.

Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Ho Quang Buu said Quang Nam continues to develop green and sustainable tourism products on the basis of the green tourism criteria issued by the locality in late 2021.

It has focused on improving the quality of tourism products, developing new products, opening and expanding the space of Hoi An Ancient Town and Hoi An Night Market, the Hoi An Memories Land tourism complex, and promoting the use of smart tourism apps to serve tourists.

According to the Quang Nam Association of Tourism, it is necessary to work out and take measures to remove difficulties facing local tourism businesses improve the tourism environment, ensure security and safety for tourists, and train human resources serving the tourism industry.

Ken Wood said ST4SD aims to help Vietnam develop its tourism industry comprehensively and more sustainably.

Through the project, Quang Nam has been supported in promoting sustainable tourism development policies, organising training courses on sustainable tourism, building sustainable and environmentally friendly green tourism models, improving the capacity and skills of human resources serving tourism sector, and raising public awareness of protecting the environment and preserving local culture, he went on.

Quang Nam served over 3.48 million visitors in the first five months of 2023, including 1.62 million foreign arrivals, up 2.2 and 30 times compared to the same period last year.

The Collective at Woolsery, North Devon

The Farmers Arm gardens
The Collective at Woolsery brings together a pub, traditional corner shop and post office, a gourmet fish and chip shop and a farm in the rural village of Woolsery near Bideford, North Devon. 

It offers three cottages, two suites and two rooms within the village that have recently opened after a complete renovation. 

Each room exploits its own unique character by drawing on the history and heritage of the village and with an aesthetic carefully designed by Hannah Lohan Interiors. 

A boutique hotel called Wulfheard Manor is in development and will be added to The Collective in 2025.


Woolsery is a steeped in history having been first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. 

Centered around a Norman church, the village grew in the 18th and 19th centuries and, unusually, has the two of Woolsery and Wolfardisworthy, which are shown on the signs as one arrives in the village. Woolsery is the ancestral home of Michael Birch, cofounder of the social networking site Bebo with his wife Xochi. 

His great, great grandparents built the village shop, his grandmother was born above it, and his family still live in the village today. 

Michael and Xochi bought a number of properties here and have ‘breathed new life’ into in the village.

The local pub, The Farmers Arms, has become an award-winning place to eat and the J.Andrew Shop & Post Office and Woolsery Fish and Chips have been reopened. 

A new farm, Birch Farm, uses traditional and organic farming principles and services the restaurant and shop.

Ian Webber, executive chef at The Farmers Arms, works closely with head gardener Josh Sparkes and livestock manager Chris Jenn at Birch Farm on sourcing most of the meats, fruits, vegetables and herbs for the kitchen. 

The ongoing renovation of the Wulfheard Manor will offer further accommodation when it opens in 2025.

Lao Cai: Hoang Lien National Park - Sustainable ecotourism development

Hoang Lien National Park (Lao Cai province) is currently an eco-tourism destination attracting a large number of domestic and foreign tourists. Tourism development in parallel with preserving and protecting biodiversity ecosystems is being implemented by Hoang Lien National Park.

Potential "treasure"

Hoang Lien National Park is ranked A by the Global Environment Fund, the highest level in terms of biodiversity value of Vietnam. Over 20 years of establishment and development, ecotourism in Hoang Lien National Park has affirmed its position and role in the promotion and promotion of tourism in Sapa town, becoming a unique tourism product of the locality. Currently, Hoang Lien National Park is an attractive eco-tourism destination with attractions such as Fansipan peak, Golden stream - Love waterfall, Dragon pool - Tien well, ancient forest, heritage tree complex, Nam Kang Ho Tao peak...

At the beginning of its operation, tourism development in Hoang Lien National Park faced difficulties and did not attract many tourists due to incomplete and synchronous infrastructure and lack of investment resources. However, when the Fansipan cable car went into operation, most guests chose to conquer the roof of Indochina by cable car system, the number of visitors experiencing the climbing service in Hoang Lien National Park decreased sharply. In particular, when the economy was affected by the global Covid-19 pandemic, the number of tourists coming to Sapa and visiting Hoang Lien National Park decreased. By the beginning of 2022, ecotourism in Hoang Lien National Park has shown signs of prosperity again. Since the beginning of 2023, it has also attracted nearly 6,000 visitors.

Representing the delegation in the recent climbing trip to conquer Fansipan peak, Mr. Hoang Viet Dung (Da Nang), confided: Our group all have passion for climbing. We have explored many different peaks in Vietnam but climbing Fansipan mountain is very enjoyable experience. During the journey, we can see that the nature here is preserved, strictly protected, wild and majestic. The guides always remind us about not littering, not cutting down trees, the use of fire is also strictly controlled to avoid causing forest fires.

In some communes near Hoang Lien National Park, commercial activities and tourism services thrive. Many households have built guest houses to welcome tourists, and at the same time develop porter, guide, and voiceover services, etc., contributing to improving socio-economic life, people's awareness in the area about environmental protection and ecotourism development.

Mining tied to protection

In order to improve visitor satisfaction, Hoang Lien National Park continues to promote the potential and strengths of ecotourism within the framework of cooperation between Lao Cai province and Nouvelle Aquitaine region (France). Test and survey programs on new tourist routes have been proposed and submitted to Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee for permission to study and build waterfall climbing adventure sports tourism and waterfall sliding tourism model (canyoning) at the tourist destination of Vang Stream - Love waterfall. Record numbers of 1700 nominations received for 2023 NTIA Awards

As the NTIAs fast approach, this year AFTA has received the highest ever number of nominations.

A record number of over 1700 nominations have already been submitted to this years NTIAs, ensuring it will be one of the largest ever celebrations of the Australian Travel Industry.

The highly anticipated National Travel Industry Awards will be held on the 18th of November and is to be hosted in Melbourne for the first time in recent years.

This year’s Awards will feature 36 award categories, including 27 “Most Outstanding” judged categories, 7 “Most Popular” voted categories and 2 “People’s Choice” consumer campaigns.

Several categories have been expanded to reflect the industry’s strong growth and expansion of scope, including additions to the Cruise, Airline, Tour Operator and Wholesaler categories.

Singapore Airlines has committed to supporting the NTIA under a multi-year partnership, returning for the second year running as major sponsor.

The 2023 NTIAs will be a celebration of the recovery and thriving success of the Australian travel sector and represent the great work of businesses and travel professionals.

Air New Zealand has unveiled its latest culinary and beverage menu, showcasing New Zealand suppliers and native ingredients more than ever before.

The new culinary menu, A Taste of Aotearoa, is onboard Business Premier cabins now, and is available on all long haul flights out of New Zealand, highlighting the wonders of local food producers through fresh and locally sourced ingredients. Tswalu Kalahari’s : Loapi Tented Camp

Tswalu Kalahari, South Africa’s plargest private reserve covering 441 square miles of the southern Kalahari, has opened its new Loapi tented camp. 

The camp is unique in that there are six private safari homes with guests not having to share any communal spaces. 

With expansive views across arid savannah grasslands, Loapi Tented Camp's six private safari homes are sited into the contours of the ancient Korannaberg mountains and can accommodate two or four guests. 

The micro-camps are at least 50 metres apart to ensure privacy and solitude and each home comes with a private team that includes a homathi (butler) and chef, a private vehicle, and the undivided attention of an experienced guide and tracker.

In the local language, Setswana, Loapi means the space below the clouds’, and the design philosophy was that the new camp needed to be as low impact as possible. 

This reflects Tswalu's ongoing commitment to sustainability and the owners’ vision of regeneration of the environment. 

The modular design, combining canvas, steel and glass, was largely manufactured off-site to minimize the environmental impact and protect the iconic shepherd’s trees. 

The camp features minimal-impact, ecofriendly design solutions, including the latest in solar power and water recycling technology, energy-efficient air conditioning, and solar-powered pool pumps. 

Inspired by the nomadic spirit of camping, the tented homes offer complete freedom to explore the reserve’s vastness and diversity at one’s own pace Guests can choose to spend all day tracking Kalahari keystone species, like the desert black rhino or brown hyena, visit nearby pans where resident black-maned lion prides converge, or take a trip to the top of Bushman Hill where Hartmann’s mountain zebra and greater kudu are often spotted.

In Van Don, it is developing high-quality tourism business services with a system of accommodation establishments rated from 3 stars or more in 2 main areas: Cai Bau island tourist area (a tourist resort and coastal service including Ha Long, Van Yen, Binh Dan, Doan Ket, Dai Xuyen, Dong Xa and Cai Rong communes); Sea and island tourist area (communities Ngoc Vung, Quan Lan, Minh Chau, Ban Sen, Thang Loi; Bai Tu Long National Park, Bai Tu Long Bay).

Currently, in Van Don district, there are 176 tourist accommodation establishments with 2,243 rooms and about 100 restaurants and eateries. According to Ms. Ly Thanh Nguyen, Head of the Culture and Information Department of the district, in order to ensure the quality of service, to meet the dining and accommodation needs of tourists, all facilities are invested in repairing, upgrading, improving rooms, and improving service quality. Units are inspected and installed with additional safety conditions for fire and explosion prevention; signed with the authorities to ensure food safety and hygiene and publicize the prices of services, meals and types of seafood in accordance with regulations.

In Mong Cai City, from the beginning of June until now, every weekend, the hotels in the area have reached 100% exploitation capacity, the number of bookings has reached August. In the first 6 months of 2023, Mong Cai city continues to be an attractive tourist destination with a total number of tourists reaching nearly 1.1 million, an increase of nearly 2 times compared to 2022. Total state budget revenue from tourism and services of Mong reached more than 58 billion VND.

According to the Quang Ninh Department of Tourism, in the province, there are 1,654 tourist accommodation establishments with 33,593 rooms that have been classified, of which 108 are 3-5 star hotels of equivalent size (from 50 rooms or more) with 13,016 rooms. In addition, there are 500 cruise ships to visit, stay overnight on Ha Long Bay, and hundreds of restaurants and food establishments to serve tourists.

New research: A third of Australians have lost their luggage while travelling

  • The latest research from Compare the Market has found that one in three (31.7%) Australians have lost their luggage while travelling.
  • Almost 40% of Millennials have arrived at their destination without their luggage, while Gen Z were the least likely to lose their luggage.
  • More than half (55.4%) of all lost luggage was returned to their owner within days of arrival, while just 3.1% of people never received their suitcases.
  • The most common items people lost on their vacation were chargers (42.6%) and clothing and shoes (40.9%).

Organising and going on a holiday is already stressful enough without having to think about your luggage going missing but according to the latest research from Compare the Market, one in three Australians (31.7%) have lost their luggage while travelling.*

Millennials are perhaps the unluckiest generation, with 37.5% of those surveyed admitting they’ve jetted off on their holidays while their luggage was left on the tarmac. Less than a quarter of Gen Z stated that they’ve watched the baggage carousel come around without their luggage.

The research also found that over half of those who arrived at their destination without their suitcase got it back within days, while 3.1% never saw it again.

Compare the Market’s General Manager of General Insurance and travel insurance expert, Adrian Taylor, spoke about what people can do if they find that their belongings did not make it with them to the destination.

“There’s an inherent trust that we put in airlines once we check our bags through that we’ll see them on the other side, but as we can see, sometimes our suitcases could be a couple of days behind us. This can be extremely frustrating to travellers who rely on having clothes to change into, not to mention being reunited with their personal belongings as they begin their holiday,” Mr Taylor said.

“The first thing I would suggest to people who lost their suitcase in transit would be to flag it with their airline carrier before they leave the airport and see if there’s potentially any compensation that they could provide for losing the luggage. However, people should note that at this stage the luggage is only considered delayed by the airline and will be up to the first 21 days.

“Once the lost luggage report has been lodged, it’s best to get in contact with your travel insurance provider, if you have one, and let them know. If your policy includes luggage cover, which it will in most cases, your insurer may be able to reimburse you for any replacement costs associated with buying essential items at your destination until your luggage arrives. However, always check the Product Disclosure Statement of your policy to know exactly what you’d be able to claim in this circumstance.”

“If you’re one of the 3.1% of unlucky people that never sees your luggage again or it’s been considered ‘lost’ by the airline, you may be entitled to monetary compensation from the airline, and your travel insurance may also pay out the difference between the reimbursement from the airline and the value of your personal belongings, based on the travel cover that you have.”

Even if your luggage does make it to its destination with you, there are still plenty of chances for people to lose their personal belongings. According to Compare the Market’s research, almost half of Australians surveyed (47.8%) have lost items during their holiday.

The most common item loved, lost and left behind was chargers (42.6%), while clothing items and shoes were lost at a similarly high rate (40.9%). Surprisingly, of the people who admitted to losing items on their vacation, 6.3% had lost some form of identification such as their passports or driver’s licence.

“Nowadays, there are many different ways that people could try and protect their belongings from being stolen or left behind, such as anti-theft bags or only packing bright clothes so they stand out in your accommodation, and you don’t forget to pack them.” Mr Taylor said.

“But the number one thing people should pack is their travel insurance, no matter if they are doing a month-long Europe trip or a simple week away interstate.

“Having travel insurance does not only cover people for their lost or stolen items, but it could cover the costs of travel delays, medical expenses, emergency accommodation and even rental car excess, depending on your level of cover.

“Each travel policy out there is different, which is why I would advise anyone thinking of taking out travel insurance to compare the inclusions and exclusions across each policy to find one that best suits their needs.”
