SLTDA Drives Sustainable Growth in Sri Lanka’s Tourism Industry

SLTDA: The Backbone of Tourism Development

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) is the official government agency responsible for regulating, developing, and managing the tourism sector in Sri Lanka. Tasked with ensuring quality, safety, and sustainability across the industry, SLTDA plays a critical role in shaping the country into a world-class travel destination.

With the Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2025 set to take place in Colombo from 22–26 September, SLTDA’s leadership and policies are central to ensuring that the country’s tourism infrastructure meets international standards.

Promoting Quality and Standards

One of SLTDA’s primary responsibilities is overseeing the licensing and regulation of hotels, tour operators, and travel services. By enforcing industry standards, the authority guarantees that visitors experience professional, safe, and reliable services.

SLTDA also focuses on training and certification for hospitality professionals, ensuring that staff in hotels, resorts, and tourism-related businesses meet global expectations. This emphasis on quality directly supports events like the Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2025, where international delegates demand exceptional service and seamless event experiences.

Leadership and Vision

The SLTDA is chaired by Mr. Buddhika Hewawasam, who also leads the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB). His dual roles provide a unique advantage: while SLTPB attracts visitors, SLTDA ensures that the industry is fully equipped to meet their expectations.

Under his leadership, SLTDA has introduced sustainable tourism initiatives, improved destination infrastructure, and strengthened regulatory frameworks. These efforts help preserve Sri Lanka’s natural and cultural heritage while promoting responsible tourism practices.

Collaboration with SLTPB and SLCB

SLTDA works closely with the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) and the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau (SLCB) to boost both leisure and business tourism. For events like the SL MICE Expo 2025, this collaboration ensures that international delegates enjoy world-class venues, efficient transport, and memorable experiences, while local communities benefit from economic growth and employment opportunities.

By aligning development, promotion, and operational standards, SLTDA plays a pivotal role in reinforcing Sri Lanka’s image as a professional, safe, and attractive destination for global travellers and business events.

Planning for the Future of Tourism

Looking ahead, SLTDA continues to focus on sustainable development, eco-friendly tourism, and capacity building. With initiatives aimed at modernising infrastructure, protecting cultural assets, and enhancing visitor experiences, the authority is helping Sri Lanka secure its position as one of Asia’s most competitive tourism destinations.

Monkey Backpackers Hostel
Tucked away in a quiet corner of Colombo's bustling streets, the Colombo Downtown Monkey Backpackers Hostel is a vibrant and welcoming oasis for travelers from around the world.

During my recent visit to Sri Lanka to participate in the Southern MICE Expo 2024 I stayed at several accommodation styles before the Expo commenced. I stayed in 4 and 5 star hotels, a homestay and this backpackers hostel.

The hostel offers dormitory-style accommodation with comfortable beds and linen. There is a range of 4, 6 or 8 bunk dorms to suit different budgets and preferences. The dorms are equipped with comfortable beds, lockers, and shared bathroom facilities. I stayed in a 6 bunk room with 2 other guests. The mattress was comfy, a fan provided cooling, and a bed lamp, powerpoint and USB charging point were next to my bunk. In the morning the host prepared a delicious breakfast for me and I felt really comfortable staying there.

Monkey Backpackers Hostel
The hostel has a lively and welcoming atmosphere, making it easy for travelers to meet and mingle with fellow guests.  I enjoyed chatting with the two others in my room, 1 from Australia and 1 from the Netherlands. The hostel has 24-hour security and reception, ensuring the safety and well-being of guests at all times.

The hostel has a spacious common area with a TV, DVD player, and comfortable seating. Guests can relax and socialize in this area, which is also equipped with a fully equipped kitchen for self-catering. Laundry facilities and a dryer are available to use. The hostel is located in the heart of Colombo, just a short 5-minute walk from you Colombo’s main Railway and Bus Station. It is within walking distance to many popular attractions, including the Colombo National Museum, Independence Square, Old parliament building, and the Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct.

One evening I walked the 5 minute walk to the Galle Face Green. Another evening I walked the 2.5 km to Gangaramaya Temple. This was during the Vesak Festival, so there was lots of music. decorated lanterns and festivities to see.

Elephant Transit Home Udawalawe: A Haven for Rescued Baby Elephants

Elephant Transit Home
Located in the heart of Southern Sri Lanka's Udawalawe National Park, the Elephant Transit Home (ETH) is a unique and groundbreaking conservation effort. It plays a vital role in protecting Sri Lanka's majestic elephant population.

I was fortunate to visit the Elephant Transit Home when taking part in the Southern MICE Expo 2024 tour of Southern Sri Lanka. When there I was fortunate to see one of the feedings sessions of the baby elephants.

ETH Udawalawe was established in 1995 by the Sri Lankan government in collaboration with the Department of Wildlife Conservation. The facility was created to provide a safe haven for rescued baby elephants, with the ultimate goal of releasing them back into the wild.

Elephant Transit Home
The primary mission of ETH Udawalawe is to provide a temporary home for elephants that have been: rescued from human-wildlife conflict situations, orphaned or abandoned, injured or ill, or confiscated from illegal captivity.

The facility aims to nurse these baby elephants back to health, both physically and emotionally, and eventually release them back into their natural habitat.

ETH Udawalawe is a bustling facility, with a team of dedicated staff and volunteers working tirelessly to care for the resident elephants. Daily operations include:
  • feeding and nutrition - providing a balanced diet for the elephants, including fruits, vegetables, and hay.
  • medical care - monitoring and treating any medical conditions, with on-site veterinary facilities.
  • enrichment activities - providing stimulation and exercise for the elephants, such as hiding food or creating mud pits.
  • socialization - encouraging social interaction among the elephants, to help them develop essential skills for survival in the wild.

Elephant Transit Home
ETH Udawalawe plays a critical role in Sri Lanka's elephant conservation efforts. By providing a safe haven for rescued baby elephants, the facility helps to reduce human-wildlife conflict, protect elephant habitats and corridors, promote research and education, and support community engagement and outreach

The ultimate goal of ETH Udawalawe is to release the resident baby elephants back into the wild. The facility has a successful release program, with many elephants reintegrated into their natural habitats. The release process involves monitoring and preparation (assessing the elephants' readiness for release),  transportation (moving the elephants to the release site), acclimatisation (allowing the elephants to adjust to their new surroundings), and post-release monitoring (tracking the elephants' progress and ensuring their well-being).

Elephant Transit Home
ETH Udawalawe is a beacon of hope for Sri Lanka's majestic elephant population. This pioneering conservation effort has been a sanctuary for countless rescued elephants, providing them with a second chance at life. Through its tireless work, ETH Udawalawe has not only helped to protect these incredible creatures but has also raised awareness about the importance of conservation and the need to address human-wildlife conflict.

As I conclude this article, we are reminded of the power of compassion and dedication. The team at ETH Udawalawe, led by their unwavering commitment to elephant welfare, has created a truly unique and inspiring program. Their work serves as a model for conservation efforts worldwide and a testament to the impact that can be made when we come together to protect our planet's precious wildlife.

As we look to the future, it is essential that we continue to support and amplify the vital work of ETH Udawalawe. By doing so, we can ensure the long-term survival of Sri Lanka's elephant population and the preservation of our planet's natural wonders. Let us join forces to protect these incredible creatures and the habitats they inhabit, for the benefit of all life on Earth.
