Brisbane School Holiday Magic: Step Into the Wonderful World of Jim Henson at GOMA

Make, Believe, Magic: The Worlds of The Jim Henson Company
Looking for something different to do with the family during the Queensland school holidays? Brisbane's Gallery of Modern Art is offering children and adults the chance to step into the colourful, imaginative world of Jim Henson.

Make, Believe, Magic: The Worlds of The Jim Henson Company is an exclusive-to-Brisbane exhibition celebrating 70 years of creativity, puppetry and storytelling. Running at GOMA from 12 September 2026 until 18 April 2027, the exhibition brings together much-loved characters, creatures, costumes, props and sets from some of the world's most memorable productions.

Meet the Characters Behind the Magic

Families can discover the creative worlds of Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, The Muppets, The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth through an immersive exhibition that explores how Jim Henson and his creative team brought extraordinary characters to life.

Among the instantly recognisable favourites are Sesame Street characters including Elmo and Cookie Monster, while fans of Fraggle Rock can see the Great Hall set from Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock in a world-first exhibition experience.

The exhibition features hundreds of objects, including practical puppets, animatronic creatures, props, costumes, original drawings and moving-image clips, providing an insight into the craftsmanship behind the productions.

Make Your Own Puppet During the School Holidays

Make, Believe, Magic
One of the highlights for younger visitors is The Sock Puppet Studio, a hands-on activity running daily from 10.00am to 3.30pm during Queensland state school holidays.

Children can use simple materials including socks, pipe cleaners and yarn to create their own character. They can then become performers themselves, learning puppetry techniques and recording a lip-sync performance inspired by the work of The Jim Henson Company.

The activity is suitable for all ages and abilities, with no previous puppetry experience required. The finished puppets remain at GOMA so the materials can be reused by other young creators.

Free Family Film Screenings

The Jim Henson experience continues beyond the exhibition galleries with three free cinema programs at GOMA's Australian Cinémathèque.

Screened to be Believed: The Jim Henson Company, Where the Wild Things Are Made: Jim Henson's Creature Shop and Beyond Henson: Puppetry and World Cinema explore the extraordinary relationship between puppetry, filmmaking and visual storytelling. The programs include more than 90 films and are scheduled throughout the exhibition season.

A School Holiday Experience for the Whole Family

Make, Believe, Magic
With colourful characters, behind-the-scenes creations, hands-on making and free film programs, Make, Believe, Magic offers families an opportunity to discover how imagination, craftsmanship and technology combine to create memorable worlds.

The exhibition is at GOMA until 18 April 2027, making it an attraction worth putting on the Brisbane itinerary well beyond the current school holidays.

Advance booking is recommended as timed-entry tickets are used for the exhibition. A family bundle discount is also available for eligible combinations of adult and child or youth tickets.

Wild Things: Sydney Opera House Unleashes a World of Family Fun

Wild Things
The Sydney Opera House will come alive with imagination, creativity and play when Wild Things, its first-ever international kids festival, takes over the iconic venue from 26 September to 11 October 2026.

Created for children and grown-ups to enjoy together, Wild Things brings stories, performances, workshops, interactive installations and free outdoor experiences from Australia and around the world to one of Sydney's most recognisable landmarks.

A Free Outdoor Playground at the Opera House

The Forecourt will be transformed into a giant outdoor playground where families can explore, play and discover unexpected performances. Free experiences include SWING, Iwagumi Air Scape, Puzzle and Erth's Wild Rumpus, providing plenty of opportunities for children to become part of the action.

Iwagumi Air Scape by ENESS creates an enormous inflatable rock landscape that visitors can explore. Interactive sounds respond to movement, while after sunset the installation becomes a colourful illuminated experience, with the lights continuing until 10pm on most festival days.

Erth's Wild Rumpus introduces lifelike puppets of wild animals and dinosaurs to the Opera House, with encounters featuring creatures including koalas, elephants, possums and a mosasaur. The free experience runs from 26 September to 6 October.

International Stories and Creative Experiences

Wild Things
Wild Things extends beyond the Forecourt with a program of theatre, circus, workshops and performances designed for different age groups.

Young audiences can experience ZOOOM, Handa's Surprise, Waiting!, The Longest Nights, We Come From Far, Far Away, Volatile Ombré and other productions throughout the festival. The program includes experiences for babies and toddlers through to older children and families.

At the Centre for Creativity, Plasmotopia invites children aged five and over to create digital artworks inspired by the Great Barrier Reef using iPad and Apple Pencil. Their creations are then brought into augmented reality, creating an imaginative underwater world inside the Sydney Opera House.

For babies aged six to 18 months, Be Kind offers an intimate introduction to live performance, combining singing, luminous juggling and opportunities for babies to explore the stage after the performance.

A Creative School Holiday Experience

Wild Things is particularly suited to families looking for things to do in Sydney during the September and October school holidays. The combination of free outdoor activities and ticketed performances allows families to create their own festival day according to children's ages and interests.

Visitors can also take advantage of a ticket discount when booking for groups of four or more. Children aged 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

With Sydney Harbour providing the backdrop, Wild Things offers families a chance to discover the Sydney Opera House through play, creativity, international performance and hands-on experiences.

Follow Bluey's Brisbane

Start by exploring the Brisbane neighbourhoods that capture the relaxed suburban character seen throughout Bluey.

The city combines hilly streets, leafy gardens, distinctive Queensland homes and local shops, creating the kind of everyday Australian environment familiar to fans of the series.

One of the city's most recognisable locations for Bluey fans is the Grand Arbour, also known as the Arbour Walkway. The approximately one-kilometre pathway winds through South Bank beneath spectacular bougainvillea-covered archways, making it a colourful place for a family stroll.

Extend the Adventure to the Gold Coast

Dreamworld
Families with extra time can travel south from Brisbane to the Gold Coast, where the beachside lifestyle provides another memorable Australian experience.

Darling Quarter Launches Little Chef: Free Kids Cooking Classes with Morgan Hipworth

Little Chef
Sydney families looking for something special to do during the spring school holidays can head to Darling Harbour, where Darling Quarter is launching Little Chef, a free hands-on cooking experience for children aged 6 to 12.

Running across nine days, the new Little Chef program will offer more than 30 free cooking masterclasses, giving up to 300 young food lovers the opportunity to step into a purpose-built workshop kitchen and learn practical culinary skills from experienced chefs.

Free Cooking Classes for Kids in Darling Harbour

Little Chef will take place on Darling Quarter's North Village Green in the heart of Darling Harbour. The program brings together popular Darling Quarter food retailers and neighbouring businesses to introduce children to cooking in a fun, supportive environment.

Participating food favourites include Kürtősh, Dopa Donburi & Dessert, Vesta Italian and Chatime, together with neighbouring businesses Cinnabon and Gostoso Churros.

Children can make and decorate a Kürtősh Kid Cube, create bubble tea with Chatime, prepare Dopa's popular Karaage Chicken Doki Box or learn how to stretch and top pizza dough with Vesta Italian.

Each masterclass provides a different culinary experience, encouraging children to return for another session and discover new skills.

Meet Special Guest Morgan Hipworth

Little Chef
Little Chef will also welcome Australian pastry chef and entrepreneur Morgan Hipworth as a special guest.

Morgan began cooking when he was just seven years old and opened Bistro Morgan at 15. He later became a guest judge on Junior MasterChef Australia and the youngest competitor on Dessert Masters.

Now 25, Morgan has built a successful hospitality career from his early passion for cooking, making his story an inspiring example for children discovering their own interest in food.

Cooking, Creativity and Confidence

Each 90-minute Little Chef masterclass is designed to give children the experience of being a chef. With guidance from industry professionals, participants can mix, roll, shape, decorate, assemble and create a variety of dishes while learning simple culinary techniques.

Sessions are tailored to different age groups, with intentionally small groups helping activities remain engaging and age appropriate. Younger children can concentrate on mixing, decorating and assembling, while older participants can explore more advanced food preparation techniques.

Children can take home a recipe card, Junior Chef apron, Little Chef certificate and commemorative badge, helping them recreate their new cooking skills at home.

A Relaxing Space for Parents

Little Chef
While children are busy cooking, parents and carers can relax at the Parents' Terrace, a dedicated lounge area alongside the workshop kitchen.

The viewing area provides food and beverage options from Darling Quarter retailers, allowing adults to unwind, catch up with friends or watch the budding chefs while remaining close to their children.

Darling Quarter Senior Marketing Manager Lucia Eman said Little Chef was designed to be more than entertainment, giving children opportunities to learn practical skills, express creativity and experience the satisfaction of making something themselves.

on train
A Paddington-themed London visit naturally begins at Paddington Station, where the famous bear first arrived from Peru carrying his battered suitcase and wearing his distinctive red hat.

The station remains one of the most recognisable places associated with Paddington. Visitors can find the Paddington Bear statue and take photographs beside the character before exploring the surrounding area.

It is an easy and entertaining stop for families and fans who want to connect the fictional story with the real London setting that inspired so much of Paddington's world.

See Paddington in London's West End

Paddington is Paddington: The Musical
One of the newest ways to experience Paddington is Paddington: The Musical, which brings the much-loved character to the London stage.

The production combines live performance, music and the familiar Paddington story in a West End theatrical experience. With the show having debuted in London in 2025 and plans for a Broadway production in New York, it has become another major attraction for Paddington fans visiting the capital.

Because popular theatre performances can sell quickly, visitors should consider booking tickets well in advance of their London holiday.

Discover Paddington's London Mural

Paddington mural on Sutton Walk
Fans can also find a colourful Paddington mural on Sutton Walk near London's South Bank.

Created by Peruvian artist Gisella Stapleton to celebrate the release of Paddington in Peru, the vibrant artwork provides an excellent photo opportunity and connects Paddington's London adventures with his South American origins.

South Bank itself is one of London's most enjoyable areas to explore, with attractions, restaurants, riverside walks and spectacular views across the River Thames.

Enter The Paddington Bear Experience

The Paddington Bear Experience
For an immersive Paddington adventure, head to The Paddington Bear Experience in London.

Visitors become part of an interactive story inspired by Paddington and the Brown family. The experience takes guests into familiar locations including the Brown family's home at 32 Windsor Gardens, with activities centred around helping Paddington prepare for Marmalade Day.

It is particularly suited to families and younger Paddington fans, but the detailed sets and nostalgia also make it appealing to adults who grew up with Michael Bond's books.

Make Paddington Part of Your London Holiday

The Paddington Bear Experience
Paddington attractions can easily be combined with a wider London sightseeing itinerary. After exploring Paddington Station, visitors can travel to South Bank for the mural and immersive experience before continuing along the Thames towards attractions such as the London Eye, Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe.

For fans of the original books, the films or the West End musical, a Paddington-themed London visit provides a charming way to see the capital through the eyes of one of Britain's best-loved fictional characters.

Magic, Mayhem and Circus Madness Take Over Sydney Opera House with Mrs Giggly's Magic School

Mrs Giggly's Magic School
Sydney families are in for a wildly imaginative theatrical adventure when Mrs Giggly's Magic School, an eccentric circus-opera created by acclaimed Australian composer Chloé Charody, arrives at the Sydney Opera House for a limited season from 4 to 8 November 2026.

Blending circus, opera, music, comedy and magic, this spectacular family production promises to transport young audiences into a world where anything is possible and where imagination, kindness and self-belief may be the most powerful magic of all.

The production has already delighted audiences internationally, with its distinctive combination of classical music, circus performance and opera. Chloé Charody is recognised for creating works that bring together these art forms in imaginative and unconventional ways.

A Magical School Where Nothing Is Ordinary

For a thousand years, magic has been fading at Mrs Giggly's Magic School.

Its eccentric headmistress, Mrs Giggly, has lost her belief in magic, while her extraordinary students have become trapped in an increasingly dull and joyless existence.

But the arrival of young Shauna is about to change everything.

After tumbling through her toybox and hurtling down a blazing rainbow slide, Shauna suddenly finds herself inside Mrs Giggly's classroom. Her fearless curiosity and extraordinary sense of wonder begin to reignite the school's lost magic.

Soon the classroom is transformed into a place of music, movement, circus spectacle and wonderfully unpredictable adventures.

Meet the Most Unusual Students in the School

Mrs Giggly's Magic School
Mrs Giggly's students are certainly not ordinary schoolchildren.

Audiences will encounter Lathundra, the fire-breathing violinist; Tigerfly, the trapeze-singing tiger-fly; Choo-Choo, the roller-skating unicorn; and Bruhnhildazon, the unicycling snail-headed merman.

These wonderfully eccentric characters help make Mrs Giggly's Magic School a theatrical experience unlike a conventional children's show.

The production combines physical comedy and circus skills with operatic singing and original music, creating a colourful stage world designed to stimulate children's imaginations.

The show's unusual characters and playful storytelling are central to its appeal, reflecting Charody's interest in creating theatrical worlds where children's creativity can take centre stage. The work was developed through creative workshops with disabled children from Oakfield School Nottingham, whose ideas helped shape the narrative.

From Chaos Comes an Important Lesson

The magical mayhem takes another turn when students from the distant School of Wahumbungldeen arrive seeking help against the fearsome Principal Poop-a-lot.

What initially appears to be a battle between good and evil soon reveals a more complicated story.

Mrs Giggly discovers an unexpected secret behind the principal's cruelty. Rather than simply defeating him, she responds with compassion and understanding, helping to restore his heart.

It is a gentle reminder for young audiences that people who appear frightening or unkind may sometimes be dealing with their own fears and sadness.

At the heart of all the circus madness and magical comedy is a positive message about kindness, empathy, courage and believing in yourself.

Circus Meets Opera in a Spectacular Family Show

Mrs Giggly's Magic School
Mrs Giggly's Magic School is particularly distinctive because it does not fit neatly into one theatrical category.

Instead, it combines the physical excitement of circus with the musical storytelling of opera.

Chloé Charody has developed a reputation for creating this unusual fusion of artistic forms. Her first circus opera, The Carnival, opened on London's West End in 2010 and subsequently toured internationally, while her broader body of work includes opera, ballet, musicals, symphonic works and children's theatre.

The music of Mrs Giggly's Magic School has also been released as an EP, featuring five pieces including Introducing Mrs Giggly, Mrs Giggly Meets Shauna and Let's Make a Magic Show!

For children, the result is an introduction to opera and live performance without the formality sometimes associated with traditional opera. For parents and grandparents, it offers an opportunity to experience an imaginative piece of contemporary Australian theatre together with the younger members of the family.

A Sydney Opera House Adventure for the Whole Family

Presented in the Studio at the Sydney Opera House, Mrs Giggly's Magic School offers families an opportunity to experience live theatre in one of Australia's most recognisable performing arts venues.

With circus skills, extraordinary characters, original music, comedy and a colourful magical storyline, the production is designed to encourage children to embrace their imagination and see possibilities where others may see limitations.

For families searching for things to do with children in Sydney in November 2026, family theatre in Sydney, children's shows at the Sydney Opera House or unique school holiday-style entertainment, Mrs Giggly's Magic School promises something genuinely different.

The limited season means families planning to attend should consider booking early.

About Chloé Charody

Mrs Giggly's Magic School
Chloé Charody is an Australian composer and creator whose work crosses the boundaries between classical music, opera, circus and contemporary performance.

Her distinctive artistic style has seen her create works for international audiences and collaborate with performers from the worlds of opera, circus and music. Her creative approach has also placed children's imagination at the heart of Mrs Giggly's Magic School.

The production's playful mixture of circus and opera makes it an appealing introduction to live performance for children while offering adults plenty of theatrical invention to enjoy as well.

Plan a Magical Sydney Theatre Experience

With its combination of circus acrobatics, opera, comedy, original music and fantastical characters, Mrs Giggly's Magic School is set to bring plenty of magic and mayhem to the Sydney Opera House in November 2026.

For families looking for an entertaining and imaginative Sydney theatre experience, this colourful circus-opera offers a chance to step away from the ordinary and enter a world where a roller-skating unicorn, a fire-breathing violinist and a snail-headed merman can all belong in the same classroom.

And perhaps the show's most enduring lesson is also its simplest: sometimes the greatest magic is already inside us.

Tristan Bancks
Celebrating Young Adult and Children’s Fiction in Sydney

The 29th Sydney Writers’ Festival promises an exciting celebration of storytelling for younger readers, with a vibrant program dedicated to young adult and children’s fiction. For families visiting Sydney and for readers of all ages, the festival offers an engaging opportunity to discover the authors shaping the next generation of literature.

Thrilling Young Adult Fiction With High Stakes and Big Emotions

Young adult fiction continues to push creative boundaries, drawing readers into powerful narratives about identity, courage, ambition and personal discovery.

Tristan Bancks brings gripping suspense to the festival with his novel Raised by Wolves. His storytelling places young protagonists in intense situations where survival, trust and determination become central themes. Readers can expect an edge-of-your-seat exploration of danger and resilience.

Adam Cece
Adam Cece’s The Locked Room combines puzzles, mystery and sharp humour in a tightly woven thriller that keeps readers guessing. His appearance promises insights into how he constructs suspenseful plots that challenge both characters and readers.

Amy Doak’s crime thriller What Have They Done to Liza McLean? introduces a gripping mystery set within the competitive environment of an elite boarding school, blending intrigue with the psychological pressures of teenage life.

The Art of the Verse Novel

Robbie Coburn
A unique highlight of the young adult program is the appearance of several writers who specialise in verse novels, a literary form that combines poetry and storytelling.

Robbie Coburn’s The Foal in the Wire presents a deeply emotional narrative told through poetic language. Pip Harry’s Drift and Karen Comer’s Once Upon Tomorrow continue this powerful tradition, exploring themes of identity, relationships and transformation through lyrical storytelling.

These authors will discuss how verse novels offer a distinctive and emotionally resonant way to tell stories, blending rhythm, imagery and narrative structure.

Stories of Resilience, Sport and Social Pressures

Allayne L Webster
Young adult fiction at the festival also explores the pressures faced by young people in competitive environments.

Allayne L Webster’s Maisy Hayes Is Not for Sale tells a story of courage and resilience in the face of adversity. Jason Gent’s This Season’s Draft examines the intense world of the AFL draft system, capturing the hopes, pressures and dreams of aspiring athletes.

Kids Take the Mic in Sydney: Ollie Horn’s Interactive Comedy Show Delights Families at Darling Quarter Theatre

Kids Can Heckle
A Must-See Family Event in Sydney This April

Sydney’s vibrant cultural scene is set to shine this April with a delightfully different comedy experience. UK stand-up sensation Ollie Horn brings his wildly interactive show Kids Can Heckle to the iconic Darling Quarter Theatre for two unmissable performances on 10 and 11 April.

Perfect for families searching for unique things to do in Sydney with kids, this one-of-a-kind event flips traditional stand-up comedy on its head, giving children the power to interrupt, interact, and even steer the show.

What Makes Kids Can Heckle So Unique

Unlike standard comedy shows, Kids Can Heckle thrives on unpredictability. Ollie Horn attempts to deliver his polished, clean stand-up routine, the same one he performs internationally. However, there’s a twist: the children in the audience are encouraged to jump in at any moment with their thoughts, jokes, and imaginative interruptions.

The result is a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud experience where no two performances are ever the same. According to Fringefeed, from the very start, Ollie had the young audience hooked, chatting with each child individually, cracking jokes, and maintaining high energy throughout.

This innovative format makes it one of the best family-friendly comedy shows in Sydney, offering both entertainment and a playful introduction to live stand-up comedy.

Why Families Love This Interactive Comedy Experience

The show is especially suited for younger audiences, but its charm and wit ensure that the whole family stays entertained from start to finish.
