Europe's Best Calmcations for 2026: Discover the Most Stress-Free Destinations for a Relaxing Escape

Tallinn, Estonia
As modern life becomes increasingly fast-paced, travellers are looking for holidays that offer more than sightseeing. They want peace, quiet and genuine opportunities to recharge. The latest travel trend for 2026 is the rise of the "calmcation" – holidays focused on relaxation, wellbeing and escaping the pressures of everyday life.

With one in six people reporting they feel stressed every day, and 76 per cent of travellers saying stress reduction is now their primary reason for taking a holiday, Europe's quieter cities are emerging as some of the world's most desirable destinations.

A comprehensive study by Vape and Go analysed almost 70 European cities, examining factors including walkability, green space, air quality, crime rates and noise pollution to identify the continent's most stress-free destinations.

The results reveal a fascinating collection of cities where tranquillity takes centre stage.

Why Calmcations Are the Biggest Travel Trend of 2026

Trondheim, Norway
Unlike traditional city breaks packed with busy sightseeing schedules, calmcations encourage travellers to slow down and reconnect with nature, local culture and themselves.

Instead of rushing between attractions, visitors spend time strolling through leafy parks, enjoying quiet waterfronts, relaxing in cafés, discovering local history and embracing a slower pace of life.

Many of Europe's smaller cities are perfectly suited to this style of travel, offering beautiful architecture, excellent public spaces and welcoming communities without the crowds found in many major capitals.

Tallinn, Estonia Tops Europe's Most Relaxing Destinations

Leading the rankings is Estonia's charming capital, Tallinn, with an impressive stress-free score of 92.8 out of 100.

Tallinn's beautifully preserved medieval Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers visitors cobbled streets, historic churches, boutique cafés and centuries of fascinating history within an exceptionally peaceful environment.

One of the city's biggest advantages is its remarkably low noise levels. Less than one per cent of residents experience significant road or rail noise during the night, making Tallinn one of Europe's quietest capitals.

Combined with low crime, good air quality and a relaxed atmosphere, Tallinn offers the ideal destination for travellers seeking genuine peace of mind.

Switzerland and Estonia Continue to Shine

Zurich
Zurich claims second place with its outstanding pedestrian-friendly streets and generous green spaces.

Visitors can explore much of the city on foot while enjoying lakeside promenades, beautifully maintained parks and spectacular alpine scenery nearby. Although Zurich recorded slightly higher air pollution than some other leading cities, its low noise levels and exceptional walkability make it one of Europe's finest urban escapes.

Estonia appears again in third place with Tartu, a vibrant university city known for its quiet streets, rich cultural heritage and relaxed lifestyle.

Tartu recorded the lowest daytime noise exposure among all cities ranked in the top ten, making it particularly attractive for travellers seeking uninterrupted tranquillity.

Scandinavia Offers Nature and Serenity

Trondheim
Norway's Trondheim ranks fourth, combining outstanding safety with more than 40 per cent green space coverage.

Although its walkability score is lower than some competitors, visitors enjoy beautiful riverside scenery, colourful historic buildings and easy access to spectacular Norwegian landscapes.

Finland's Tampere also makes the top ten, boasting the cleanest air of any city in the entire study.

Its pristine lakes, forests and relaxed Nordic atmosphere create an environment that naturally encourages visitors to unwind and reconnect with nature.

Hidden European Gems Worth Discovering

Rijeka
Several lesser-known destinations performed exceptionally well in the rankings.

Lithuania's capital Vilnius offers impressive green spaces, attractive historic streets and relatively low noise levels, making it an increasingly popular alternative to Europe's busier capitals.

The Hague in the Netherlands achieved the highest safety rating of every city included in the research, making it particularly attractive for solo travellers and families seeking a worry-free holiday.

Croatia's coastal city of Rijeka combines Adriatic Sea views with generous green spaces and a laid-back waterfront atmosphere, while Slovenia's picturesque capital Ljubljana boasts the highest percentage of green space of any destination analysed.

Geneva, meanwhile, offers visitors one of Europe's most walkable cities, allowing tourists to explore lakeside parks, museums and elegant streets entirely on foot.

The Top 10 Most Stress-Free European Cities for 2026

  1. Tallinn, Estonia – 92.8
  2. Zurich, Switzerland – 88.1
  3. Tartu, Estonia – 86.6
  4. Trondheim, Norway – 84.8
  5. Vilnius, Lithuania – 82.7
  6. The Hague, Netherlands – 82.5
  7. Rijeka, Croatia – 82.4
  8. Geneva, Switzerland – 81.6
  9. Tampere, Finland – 81.5
  10. Ljubljana, Slovenia – 80.8

Europe's Most Stressful Cities

While many destinations excelled in creating peaceful urban environments, others scored considerably lower due to higher crime rates, heavier traffic, increased noise pollution and poorer air quality.

According to the study, the ten most stressful European destinations for travellers in 2026 are:

  • Naples, Italy
  • Antwerp, Belgium
  • Bucharest, Romania
  • Lyon, France
  • Athens, Greece
  • Thessaloniki, Greece
  • Marseille, France
  • Malmö, Sweden
  • Birmingham, United Kingdom
  • Milan, Italy

Naples ranked as Europe's most stressful city, primarily due to lower safety scores, higher crime levels and limited green space. Antwerp followed because of significant daytime noise, while Bucharest's combination of heavy traffic noise and poor air quality contributed to its low ranking.

Choosing a Holiday That Improves Your Wellbeing

Geneva
The growing popularity of calmcations reflects a changing attitude towards travel.

Increasingly, travellers are prioritising mental wellbeing alongside sightseeing, choosing destinations where they can walk peacefully, breathe cleaner air, enjoy beautiful parks and experience authentic local culture without overwhelming crowds.

Europe's highest-ranked calmcation destinations demonstrate that memorable holidays don't always require packed itineraries. Sometimes the greatest luxury is simply slowing down, enjoying beautiful surroundings and returning home feeling refreshed.

For travellers planning a European holiday in 2026, these peaceful cities offer the perfect opportunity to escape the pressures of everyday life while discovering some of the continent's most beautiful and underrated destinations.

What’s the Top Thing to Do in the World? The 2025 Travellers Have Spoken

Florence
The World’s Best Experiences Revealed

Every year, millions of travellers take part in a global vote — not through ballots, but through real reviews. Tripadvisor’s 2025 Travellers’ Choice Awards Best of the Best has unveiled its top experiences, with just 1% of global listings earning this elite title. These are the moments that stay with you — the boat rides, bike tours, hikes, and history walks that turn a trip into a story worth sharing.

Could It Be Rafting in Colorado or Sightseeing in Sorrento?

Top experiences span continents and interests. In Colorado, the thrilling white-water rafting tour down the Colorado River delivers big on adventure and scenery. Over in Italy, the romantic coastline of Sorrento draws in travellers for its cliffside views, ancient ruins, and Mediterranean charm. But neither took the number one spot.

Florence Wins Hearts with a Storyteller’s Touch

Topping the global list for 2025 is The Best Tour in Florence: Renaissance & Medici Tales, a walking tour through the heart of the Italian Renaissance, led by a local storyteller. Set in small groups, the tour moves beyond facts and dates to deliver drama, detail, and hidden tales from one of Europe’s most fascinating periods. It’s not just a walk through Florence — it’s a journey through time.

Vietnam’s Natural Beauty Shines in Ninh Binh

Vietnam
Ranked high on the list is the Full-Day Ninh Binh Highlights Tour from Hanoi, where travellers swap city bustle for serene countryside. With a blend of hiking, cycling, and river cruising, this tour showcases limestone karsts, ancient temples, and peaceful rice fields. Guides are praised for their enthusiasm and deep knowledge of local culture, making it more than just a scenic escape.

Dive into the Adriatic with Croatia’s Blue Cave Tour

Blue Cave Small-Group Boat Tour
Another favourite is the Blue Cave Small-Group Boat Tour from Dubrovnik. Travellers sail along Croatia’s sun-drenched coast, stopping to swim in hidden coves and snorkel in translucent waters. With a capped group size, this tour delivers a relaxed and intimate experience, where the sea and sky seem to stretch forever.

A Celebration of Quality and Connection

These top-rated experiences aren’t just beautiful — they’re built on authenticity, storytelling, and genuine connections. That’s what the Best of the Best title recognises: not only the quality of the destination, but the commitment of the people who make it unforgettable.

Fewer than 1% of Tripadvisor’s 8 million listings receive this honour, making each winner a rare gem in the world of travel.

Travel Your Way — With the World’s Best as Your Guide

Whether you’re a museum lover, a thrill-seeker, or a culinary explorer, the 2025 Best of the Best list offers something extraordinary. Use it to plan your next adventure — and discover why travellers from all walks of life agree that these are the best things to do in the world.

Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2024

Mongolia
Lonely Planet has announced its Best in Travel Destinations 2024.

To mark the publishers 50th anniversary, the Best in Travel 2024 has expanded from the top 10 best cities, countries, and regions to include best value and best sustainable destinations.

Over the past 50 years Lonely Planet has printed over 150 million guidebooks covering 221 countries and other titles showcasing the wonders of the world for travellers.

Now in its 19th year Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel is voted for by the publishers global community of staff, local writers, and partners.

It looks to provide expert insight into lesser-known destinations and new takes on popular places.

New cycling trails, train and flight services making destinations more accessible, bids for UNESCO world heritage status and ongoing commitment to sustainability, community and diversity have all contributed towards this year’s list.

Best Countries

1. Mongolia 2. India 3. Morocco 4. Chile 5. Benin 6. Mexico 7. Uzbekistan 8. Pakistan 9. Croatia 10. St Lucia

Mongolia

For seekers of wide-open spaces, adventures and culture, the capital is teeming with people and unique attractions. Squeezed between Russia and China, Mongolia seems hard to reach given recent geopolitical events in its two large neighbours. But Mongolia’s doors are open and a tourism campaign has eased visa restrictions through 2025. www.discovermongolia.mn

India

There are lot of new ways to explore the world’s most colourful country, new flight services are providing easy access to much    loved hubs such as Delhi, Mumbai, Goa and Kerala and India’s railways are in for a revamp, with stylish new trains rolling out across the network. Or take a 2,000-mile boat trip on the MV Ganges Vilas, the world’s longest river cruise. www.incredibleindia.org

Morocco

There’s nothing quite like wandering the Sahara Desert on camelback, hunting for bargains in a Marrakech souk and exploring the enchanting blue city of Chefchaouen. But this North African country made our list in 2024 thanks to the buzz from its historic performance at the World Cup, its ascension to the echelon of the world surf circuit, and its revived music festival, Mawazine. Research for Best in Travel 2024 took place prior to the 2023 earthquake which severely affected areas south of Marrakesh. We suggest travellers check for the latest updates on individual locations. Now more than ever tourism income can help support the country’s recovery. www.visitmorocco.com/en

Mexico

For travellers seeking adventure, culture, history, food and art, this year in there are new transportation options along with a celestial event. Take the freshly launched train to Caribbean beaches and ancient Maya ruins; view the 2024 solar eclipse from the golden sands of Mazatlán; or try a road trip to bohemian beach towns along Oaxaca’s rugged and beautiful coast. www.visitmexico.com/eng/home-2

Chile

Chile
A country of salt flats, rainforests, volcanoes, glaciers, and fjords. Change permeates the air across the country with expanded parklands, a new president and plans for a new equity-minded constitution. Chefs in Santiago are untapping the potential of endemic ingredients. Vintners are finding more natural ways to make wine. Rapa Nui (Easter Island) is imagining a sustainable future while rewilding efforts in Patagonia are restoring biodiversity. www.chile.travel/en

Benin

This bijou West African country punches above its weight in its charisma, history and cultural power. Once the site of the ancient Kingdom of Dahomey, it is also the spiritual home of voodoo, a fascinating and often misunderstood religion. Beat a path to Benin’s palm-fringed beaches and some of the best national parks this side of the continent. www.lonelyplanet.com/benin

Uzbekistan

From oasis to oasis follow the trading networks of centuries past. High-speed rail and a convenient domestic flight network have replaced the camel caravans once connecting prosperous fortress towns, yet the ancient cultural hubs of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva still evoke the era of the Silk Road. In the Nuratau Mountains, a community based tourism initiative shows visitors the life of shepherding communities. www.lonelyplanet.com/uzbekistan

Pakistan

The country has long lured travellers from all over the world, and its overdue for a resurgence. Following easing of political tensions, adventure tour companies are returning to Pakistan’s buzzing bazaars, Mughal-built mosques, alpine valleys, and snow-dusted Himalayan passes. Every rupee you spend helps the country rebuild after the devastating floods of 2022. www.tourism.gov.pk

Croatia

Sun-kissed coastline, myriad islands, dramatic mountains, and historic walled cities and the Vis archipelago has been recognised as a UNESCO Geopark With its entry into both the border-free Schengen Area and the Eurozone, travel in Croatia is even easier. The opening of the Peljesac Bridge and new highway means it’s now possible to travel directly between Split and Dubrovnik, without passing through Bosnia. The Bridge has also shone a spotlight on the previously overlooked part of the Croatian coastline, the Peljesac Peninsula. www.visit-croatia.co.uk

St Lucia

Known for its white sand and ceruleantinged waters, St Lucia is shifting its focus to make the island’s cultural heritage, distinctive traditions, and creative proclivities more accessible, an ideal experience for Carib-ophiles searching for something beyond the typical all-inclusive stay. www.stlucia.org/en_UK/

WE'VE GOT (A LOT) OF NEWS

I’m overwhelmed, yet so excited that everything that we’ve been building seems to be taking off all at once. Namaste! The past six weeks have been a blur. In living up to the name of my series, “SLEEPING AROUND SAFELY,” this jetset gypsy has tucked herself into many a luxury hotel bed and jumped a few status categories with One World Alliance. A shout out to the Santa Monica Proper for my post Virtuoso (watch my TV segment on ABC’s KTNV on REGENERATIVE TRAVEL), pre 25-day Croatia shoot and hurricane safe house. Literally a whirlwind visit, but the traditional Ayurvedic norish + restore Shirodhara treatment at Surya by Martha brought me right back to earth - check out my #behindthescenes coverage.

SPOILER ALERT: I’m going to be talking about all the transformative travel moments with our local hosts from Croatia for months to come! Please check out a few video highlights below - these are just a taste of Season three of “OH THE PEOPLE YOU MEET with Michaela Guzy”(episodes three + four) from across Croatia, a special deep dive on Istra and our “SLEEPING AROUND SAFELY” mini-series.

I figured since I was going to have to fly on through the East Coast anyway, I ought to go support my friends at ILTM for their first North America edition at Baha Mar in the Bahamas. Baha Mar spoiled us with Grand Hyatt Reserve’s butler service, flamingo yoga, a sunset sail + a golf lesson. Congrats on such a successful event! And Nassau got her groove back with the new cruise terminal welcoming over 1.6 million cruise visitor arrivals (first point of entry) in the first half of 2023 as compared to 883,721 for first half of 2022. The locals feeling the positive impact of inbound tourism dollars is palpable, with a great example being the restoration of the colorful downtown Nassau. I loved visiting all the small businesses, a majority of which are black owned, being showcased at the new terminal. I was proud to shop local in support of a few of these fashion forward designers.

On October seventh the OTPYM crew and I head out to film Season three, episode five in Singapore with the Global Hotel Alliance! Looking forward to “SLEEPING AROUND SAFELY” with the Pan Pacific Hotel Group, Capella + Kempinski while in town. After I head onto Dubai after 10 long years away, en route to broadcast segments on NBC (LA, SF, NYC + Chicago) from Yas and Saadiyat Islands in Abu Dhabi! Stay tuned on Instagram for tune in details.

Hopefully you saw our BIG news last week. If you aren’t flying Qatar Airways anytime soon, folks in the USA can tune in to seasons one + two of “OH THE PEOPLE YOU MEET with Michaela Guzy” on M/LUX (on Roku, Vizio, Fire + Apple TV): www.mluxnetwork.com to watch (found in Travel + Adventure). Thanks for the feature Insider Travel Report: HERE.

If you know me, you know I geek out on research and trend forecasting. I know it’s weird but I love it so much! I’m super jazzed to share a Travel Trend Forecast from the World Travel & Tourism Council in Saudi Arabia. This OTPYM special report was inspired by meaningful conversations with global thought leaders from the public + private sectors of the travel industry. I had the honor to interview CEOs and visionaries who are working in conjunction with WTTC to make a positive impact on the people, places + purposes we are visiting, with a special emphasis on sustainable job development, tourism recovery cross sector and regenerative travel initiatives. Please watch to learn more: HERE.
