BARGING AROUND BELGIUM WITH CROISIEUROPE

MS Raymonde
A floating Journey Through Belgium cruising the Canals Aboard the MS Raymonde

There are few better ways to discover Belgium than by drifting gently along its historic canals aboard a boutique barge like MS Raymonde, one of CroisiEurope’s intimate hotel barges. With only eleven cabins, it’s a floating retreat where personal service, fine dining, and the service and lure of small-group travel create an experience that feels like a cruise with friends.

Itineraries on the MS Raymonde can include a French champagne region cruise or Belgian Canals, exploring cities like Ghent and Bruges. Both itineraries offer a blend of scenic, historical and cultural experiences like wine and cheese tasting, casual strolls and fine dining on board.

On the Halle to Ghent cruise, each day reveals a new side of Belgium—abbey breweries tucked into forests, centuries-old churches rising above sleepy hamlets, and vibrant market squares alive with the scent of frites and spices. Excursions may include tasting sessions at local chocolatiers, visits to belfries and UNESCO-listed towns, or simply watching the rhythm of life along the canals: cyclists waving from the towpath, swans gliding beside the hull, and locals pausing to chat at the locks.

Effervescent Purser, Hans created some highlights with his clever, witty and humorous presentations, calls to meals, general information and specialty cheese presentations. A real-life character to be sure. Hans has been on board for many years and along with the captain and crew of only five they keep the ship steady as she goes.

Engineering Marvels and Timeless Towns

Bruges, Carmersbrug (Carmelite Bridge)
One of the cruise’s highlights is the awe-inspiring Strépy-Thieu boat lift, a masterpiece of modern engineering. Towering 100 metres above the valley, it raises the Raymonde—and her passengers—like a toy in a vast steel cradle, offering breathtaking views across Wallonia’s rolling hills. It’s a surreal moment: a floating hotel suspended in the sky.

Further along, the barge moors near Oudengaarde, a picturesque Flemish town famous for its tapestries, ornate belfry, and charming riverside cafés. Guests can stroll or cycle along the towpaths, exploring Gothic architecture and enjoying a quiet drink in the town square as church bells echo across the rooftops. In the evening, Raymonde becomes a cozy retreat, her lights glowing softly in the reflection of the canal.

Belgian Pleasures Along the Way

MS Raymonde
The Raymonde’s compact size belies her comfort. Each cabin is elegantly fitted with picture windows, soft lighting, and modern amenities. Meals are an event in themselves—Belgian cheeses, freshly baked bread, and regional specialties like waterzooi or carbonnade Flamand paired with robust local beers. On deck, guests sip aperitifs or enjoy a glass of bubbly in the spacious hot tub while the barge glides through green fields, quiet villages, and rows of poplars that seem to march along the canals.

After six leisurely nights, the Raymonde glides into Ghent.

Guests disembark with new friends, a camera full of momentous moments, and perhaps a few extra souvenirs: a box of chocolates, pralines, a bottle of Trappist beer, and the memory of “mussels in Brussels,” shared over laughter and candlelight.

In a country celebrated for its art, architecture, and indulgence, a cruise aboard CroisiEurope’s MS Raymonde offers something more, a chance to slow down and see Belgium not just as a destination, but as a living, breathing landscape best admired from the water.

Sun, fun and safety: Tips for summer festival travel

It's that time of year to hit the festival grounds of the Northern Hemisphere. Many people will be travelling overseas for festivals such as Glastonbury, Burning Man, Tomorrowland, Roskilde, Sziget, and more.

It’s easy to get swept up in the festival environment and be distracted by the stages, events and people around you. But while having the time of your life, it's important to know how to keep you and your belongings safe.
Party safely

Don't push yourself or your mates to drink past your limits. You'll be more likely to make poor decisions if you've had too much to drink.

If you plan on drinking, think about getting an unopened bottle or canned drink. This can help limit what could be added to your drink unknowingly.

Know the signs and symptoms of drink spiking. If you think you or your friend’s drink has been spiked, get to safety and get medical assistance if needed. they need it. Find a map or know beforehand where the medical tent is.

Have a time and place to meet up with your friends if you get separated. There's nothing worse than not being able to find your friends among thousands of people. Phone reception could be unreliable with so many people in the same area. Make your plans before you get to the festival grounds.

Read our advice on partying safely.

Personal safety and security

Be smart about what valuables you take with you to the festival. Keep your wits about you and your belongings out of easy reach. Thieves are looking for distracted people and for items that are easily accessible.

Also be aware of your surrounds and know where the exit points are in case of an emergency or potential crowd crush.

Read our advice on theft and going overseas for a major event.

Research your destination

Research the local laws where you’re going. Understand the entry rules and your visa conditions. Know the rules around drug and alcohol consumption, including the legal drinking age. The laws may be different and the consequences harsher than in Australia. If you break the law, you could be arrested or jailed.

Terrorism

Terrorism remains a threat across the world including in Europe and the USA. Terrorists use different methods of attack, targeting foreign tourists and locals. Crowded places like festivals can be targets for terrorism.

Check the advice for your destination and decide if you feel safe travelling. While you're away and at the festival, be alert and report anything suspicious. If something does happen, follow the advice of local authorities and monitor the media for updates.

Read our advice on terrorism.

Crystal Symphony 2023 Itineraries Announced

Crystal Symphony at sea

  • More options in Ireland, Egypt and the British Isles, plus seasonal choices for cherished destinations

Crystal Cruises has unveiled its complete roster of global itineraries for Crystal Symphony's 2023 season. In 2023, 36 all-inclusive voyages of six to 15 nights take guests on far-away journeys that span from exotic, tropical and remote retreats to culturally rich and deeply spiritual explorations. With several regions explored at different times of year, the roster of 2023 sailings offers travelers options to visit many regions outside of high seasons.

When Crystal Symphony's itineraries open for booking on July 22, it will bring more than three and a half years of choices for travelers to plan their future voyages. The announcement comes just two months after Crystal Serenity's 2023 itineraries, bringing the total number of voyages for Crystal's Ocean ships in 2023 to 68 individual itineraries ranging from six to 23 nights, with many combinable options for longer journeys. Crystal Serenity will also offer closer-to-home routes in North America – exploring New England and Canada and the Caribbean – while Crystal Symphony will spend the entire year sailing abroad. Both award-winning luxury ships will sail the Mediterranean and Western Europe in the summer months on differing itineraries that allow travelers to choose the voyage that perfectly suits their preferences.

“Always with an eye to offering our guests multiple choices, we intentionally planned voyages that explore travelers' favorite places outside the traditional seasons, as this allows them to glean a different perspective on the destinations and their cultures and seasonal traditions,” says Carmen Roig, Crystal's senior vice president of marketing and sales. “Voyage durations have also been planned with guests' calendars in mind, from convenient, six-night options to elaborate two-week-plus options, and everything in between. Like every part of the Crystal Experience, selecting and planning a voyage should perfectly suit each traveler's needs.”

Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Holy Land, Mediterranean and Western Europe, the British Isles and Ireland highlight the collection of voyages, all of which feature at least one overnight stay. Also featured are five maiden calls – in Kampot, Cambodia; Khor Fakkan, UAE; Bristol, England; Malmoe, Sweden; and Gisborne, New Zealand – as well as new embarkation and disembarkation in the boutique port of Eilat, Israel; a return to charming Skagen, Denmark for the first time in nine years; and an overnight in the fashionable city of Antwerp, Belgium (rare among ocean ships).

Among the regions and destinations that Crystal Symphony guests have the choice to visit multiple times of year are:

Southeast Asia and India, with six-, seven-, eight- and nine-night sailings visiting Chennai, Goa and Mumbai, India; Yangon, Myanmar; Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, Vietnam; Ko Samui, Phuket and Bangkok, Thailand; Singapore, maiden call Kampot (Cambodia); Port Klang and Penang, Malaysia; and Colombo, Sri Lanka and others offered January through March; longer 13- and 15-night sailings offered in November.

The Middle East, Holy Land and Egypt, with March and April sailings of six, eight, nine and 11 nights and seven-, 10- and 13-night options in October exploring Aqaba, Jordan; Manama, Bahrain; Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sir Bani Yas Island and Khor Fakkan, as well as Kuwait City, Kuwait; Doha, Qatar; Salalah and Muscat, Oman; Ashdod and Eilat, Israel; and Safaga, Sharm el Sheikh and Sokhna, Egypt.

The Mediterranean, with a 12-night April Black Sea exploration throughout Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Greece and Italy; and seven-, nine- and 11-night May and June voyages along the Dalmatian Coast, Mediterranean and Western Europe, including Croatia, Montenegro, Greece, Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Morocco and more. The ship returns to the region in September and October for fall itineraries of seven and 10 nights.

Crystal Symphony will sail the Baltic and Northern Europe – including the British Isles, Ireland, Russia, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Finland, Poland and Iceland in late June and July; will spend December cruising Australia and New Zealand, with a New Year's Eve celebration in Sydney.

While its fleet is paused, the Crystal team is developing new procedures and policies that will support all public health and regulatory requirements and ensure that guests' vacations continue to be not only relaxing and pleasurable but safe and healthy. Details of these new measures and initiatives will be announced soon.

Additionally, the inherent design of Crystal ships maximizes personal and public space, offering plenty of options for those who choose to keep a healthy distance during their voyage. All Crystal ships across the fleet including Ocean, River, Yacht and Expedition offer nearly double the space per person than ships of a similar size, which is among the highest space ratios in the industry and their social spaciousness will be further augmented through the new measures we will be implementing. Further, Crystal Endeavor and Crystal's River ships are all-suite and all-balcony with most staterooms on its two Ocean ships featuring private verandas for fresh airflow.

The safety of guests and crew members is Crystal's number one priority and the fleet will resume service only when the company's expert team and global health and government authorities indicate that it is safe to do so.

The Face of a New Global Backpacker Generation

  • 'Tried and tested routes' are declining in popularity for Gen Z
  • The top three destinations for future Aussie Gen Z travellers are Greece, Norway and Portugal
  • Women are going on more extended backpacking trips than men
  • The majority of hostel travellers are now employed young adults taking planned vacations, rather than students
  • Over four in five (81%) recent travellers who went on extended trips chose to stay in hostels
Australia, June 12th, 2019, 9am AEST – Hostelworld, the world's leading hostel-focused online booking platform, has unveiled its 'Evolution of the Hostel Traveller' Report today. The global report breaks backpacker stereotypes and unpacks traveller behaviours across three generations, Baby Boomers, Gen X and Gen Y.
The report, which surveyed over 5,000[1] people from different generations – including Australia, the USA, UK, France, Germany, India and Brazil – has revealed a noticeable shift in the activity's backpackers do when travelling across the globe and in hostels. Partying has taken a back seat, and in its place is volunteering, venturing to off-the-beaten-track destinations and long-term planning.
Furthermore, Gen Z'ers are looking to explore beyond the traditional routes with a 33% decline in trips planned to 'tried and tested' destinations when compared to Gen X or Baby Boomers.
Busting the backpacker behaviour
According to the study, there has been an 85% increase in Aussies looking to engage in volunteering whilst travelling compared with 20 years ago. Supporting this, we know that whilst nightlife is still an important part of the backpacking experience, the report shows that it is dropping down the priority list. Future travellers expect once in a lifetime experiences (34%) and culture (49%) to be more memorable than nightlife (17%).
However, it doesn't mean they don't want to socialise at all. Future hostel travellers want to meet new people from all over the world, with almost a fifth (19%) ranking social space as the most important consideration when choosing where to stay – an area where hostels excel.
Booking habits have also seen a substantial shift. Aussie Gen Z'ers are booking their accommodation 3-6 months ahead, a huge increase of 231% from past travellers. Similarly, there has been an 83% decrease in on the day bookings.
The report also showcases that there is a 57% increase in Gen Z travellers planning shorter trips during their university breaks, rather than taking a full year off after school. This is a trend that's showing a particularly strong growth for Indian (208% increase), French (70% increase) and Australian students (35% increase).
In addition to social space and free activities, future travellers want unique accommodation, not just your standard hotel décor but something a bit different. In fact, hostel décor is becoming an increasingly important factor to where millennial travellers choose to book (44% increase).
Gary Morrison, CEO, at Hostelworld said, “Our Evolution of the Hostel Traveller report shows how much hostelling has changed in the 20 years that we've been operating as the world's leading hostel-focused online booking platform.
“This is only the beginning of what's to come. Today we're seeing a booming hostel industry, as global demand to explore the world and connect with new cultures continues to rise. Travellers are evolving, and so are the hostels where they're staying, which is why I am excited to see what the next 20 years will bring.”
Tried and tested routes are declining. Off the beaten track routes are the winners
Latin America is the biggest emerging backpacker route for Millennial and Gen Z travellers. Whilst Europe captured the hearts of past jetsetters, Central America has created a newfound appetite for adventure, with a 61% increase in travellers heading there today. For Gen Z, South America is top of their list, as one in five (20%) 16-21-year olds surveyed intend to visit South America in the next three years.
According to the report, the countries with the highest growth in desire to visit for Aussie Gen Z travellers (by % growth in comparison to Millennial travellers) are:
  1. Greece (41%)
  2. Norway (39%)
  3. Portugal (31%)
  4. Sweden (28%)
  5. Denmark (18%) / Canada (18%)
  6. Belgium (15%) / USA (15%)
  7. Ireland (11%)
  8. Spain (10%)
Asia continues to reign supreme for Millennial travellers, with Eastern Asian countries taking the two top spots for the most growth as a travel destination for those recent travellers. The top three countries increasing in popularity for Millennials globally (by % growth) are:
  1. South Korea – 276% increase
  2. Japan – 151% increase
  3. Cuba – 135% increase
The rise of female solo travel
The secret is out…female wanderlusters are seeing and experiencing more of the world. The new report reveals three-quarters (75%) of women across the world have gone or plan to go backpacking, compared to only two-thirds (67%) of men.
Where solo travel was once seen as brave and risky for female travellers, a shift in attitude has meant that it is now adventurous and exciting. A trend that can be seen through Hostelworld's own booking data reflects this trend with bookings made by solo female travellers increasing by a huge 88% over the past four years.
Aussie females are also more likely to want to engage in volunteering with 66% of females planning to engage in volunteering whilst backpacking compared to just 33% of Aussie men.
The growth figures for the destination's women globally plan on travelling to are also much higher than men.
Top 5 future destinations for men:
  1. Cuba (25%) increase
  2. Colombia (20%) increase
  3. Australia (17%) increase
  4. Portugal (10%) increase
  5. Brazil (10%) increase
Top 5 future destinations for women:
  • Brazil (75%) increase
  • Iceland (67%) increase
  • Chile (67%) increase
  • Fiji (67%) increase
  • Norway (67%) increase
This growth in desire for adventure-prone destinations is being driven by Aussie women for Brazil, a 179% increase compared with past travellers.
The Tech Traveller
With technology becoming more and more accessible every day, it is no wonder that travellers are looking to tech solutions to make their backpacking experiences more seamless. Hostelworld have seen a 54% increase in bookings via the mobile app in just two years. According to the latest figures in 2018, 40% of Hostelworld's customers booking via the mobile app compared to just 26% in 2016.
The Hostelworld app isn't just designed to make booking hostels quick and easy on the go, the in-app features encourage backpackers to get social and easily connect with each other. The most recent update saw Hostel Chat added to its functions, designed to allow travellers to easily speak to other guests regardless of languages.
