Collette ceases tours to Russia and supports humanitarian efforts in Ukraine

The Collette Foundation has announced it has pledged $200,000 to support humanitarian organisations on the ground in Ukraine following its decision to cease operating tours in Russia and to withdraw from all other business interests in Russia.

The US $200,000 pledge will aid specific organisations on the ground to assist refugees and persons impacted by the escalating crisis in Ukraine.

“The commitment to making the world a better place through travel has always been Collette’s core purpose. Providing this level of support is at the forefront of why our family chose to create the Foundation and situations such as these are exactly why we do what we do,” said Jaclyn Leibl-Cote, President of Collette.

Global tour operator Collette has also decided to cease operating tours in Russia through 2023 and to withdraw from all other business interests in Russia in support of a peaceful resolution to the current conflict and a halt to ongoing aggression and casualties.

Mr. Doan Van Viet (middle) led Vietnam delegation
attended the first meeting of ASEAN and
Russian Federation Tourism Ministers
On 19 January, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Mr. Doan Van Viet led Vietnam delegation attended the first meeting of ASEAN and Russian Federation Tourism Ministers. The meeting is on the framework of ATF 2022 in Cambodia.

Despite the challenge brought by the pandemic, Southeast Asian countries are among the preferred destinations by the Russian tourists as reflected by the growing total visits prior to the pandemic. In addition, Russian arrivals have always been within the top 10 source markets outside ASEAN.

The meeting was pleased to welcome the elevation of the ASEAN-Russian Federation Tourism Cooperation to the Ministerial level, recognising the importance of this milestone as 2021 marks the 30th Anniversary of ASEAN-Russia Relations.

In 2021, the ASEAN-Russia Federation Tourism Work Plan 2022-2024 was developed with five key dimensions: Support continued consultations between ASEAN and Russian Federation to promote tourism cooperation; Collaboration on professional training and advancement in the field of tourism; Best practices in ensuring tourists’ safety; Encourage people-to-people movement between ASEAN and Russia; and supporting sustainable tourism.

In 2022 Russia is planning to implement the fifth stage of the programme with a view to expand business contacts between Russia and ASEAN tourism enterprises through Russian language training and experience exchange.

Predictions for 2021: the "who", "what", "where", "when", "how" and "why"; of travel a year on since the pandemic shocked the world

PRCO's Asia pitch - trends, observations and prediction on travel: Despite the circumstances, 2020 proved to be a remarkably positive year in terms of holiday bookings for UHNWI, particularly in destinations that are accessible by private jet and with private villas.

2020 presented the hospitality sector with a unique set of challenges. However, we learned that the consumer appetite to travel was not blunted by Covid-19, even if the ability to travel was curtailed.

As borders reopened over the summer, the demand for leisure travel, particularly in the UHNWI market, soared. In October, the Financial Times reported that many of the world’s billionaires have seen their fortunes rise to record levels during the COVID-19 pandemic, as many benefited from high-risk investments in volatile markets and profited from the tech boom.

Despite the circumstances, 2020 proved to be a remarkably positive year in terms of holiday bookings for UHNWI, particularly in destinations that are accessible by private jet and with private villas. Ultima Collection, an ultra-luxury collection of private 5-star hotels, villas and residences across Europe, saw an increase in bookings once borders reopened thanks to the exclusivity and high level of privacy that their properties offer. The brand also reported that 95% of their guests in 2020 arrived by private jet.

The 2020 Amex Consumer Trends Report polled 2000 individuals who took at least one holiday in 2019 and identified that travel was the top purchase that respondents are saving for in 2021. There is every indication that once borders reopen, and, in conjunction with mass vaccination programmes, the demand and willingness to travel will once again soar. We take a look at how different markets are approaching travel in 2021 with trends, observations and predictions across the UK, Russia, the GCC and Asia.

Asian Market

Increased demand for private group holidays
Health and social distancing measures continue to be a priority across Asia, whether it is the chosen destination or type of travel. Travel bookings in 2020 have shown a significant shift away from group tours to private groups and free independent travellers (FIT). The China Tourism Academy reported that in the southeastern city of Fuzhou, less than 2% of holiday travellers were part of an organised group tour, whilst Trip.com reported a 100% year-on-year increase in private family groups.

A focus on nature-led, domestic tourism
Travellers are opting for open spaces with high hygiene standards and social distancing measures. Whilst the world is celebrating the rollout of vaccines, local destinations that offer outdoor adventure experiences will continue to be travellers’ top choices over cities. In China, domestic tourism will continue to boom in 2021 - China’s October Golden Week in 2020 championed Sanya as the leading destination to travel to, followed by Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu and Hangzhou.

Virtual travel is here to stay, for now
Live-streaming is also here to stay for China’s travel businesses whilst the travel industry recovers. Trip.com co-founder James Liang has sold US$294 million in holiday packages and hotel rooms by hosting 25 live streams in ancient Chinese hanfu garments. Liang’s entertaining video campaigns, incorporating traditional Chinese performance arts such as crosstalk and Sichuan “face-changing” opera, have made him an internet celebrity.

UK Market

The year of the double-holiday
Several luxury UK tour operators are noticing an increase in the budgets amongst existing clients, as well as new inquiries, for an average long-haul trip. Abercrombie & Kent recently noted that 'big' holidays to coincide with missed milestones as well as having a year "off" travel are resulting in bigger holiday budgets. Furthermore, in 2020, many employees faced cancelling their holidays, choosing to carry days over into 2021 and allowing for longer trips once restrictions ease.

The demand for travel in 2021 is therefore presenting itself in an entirely different way than experts have studied before, with more time, bigger budgets and the burning desire to spend extended quality time, in safe and exciting destinations, with those who matter most. Recovery period allows for peaceful visits to tourism hotspots

In 2021, well-travelled individuals are likely to think smart and use this recovery period to venture to typically overcrowded destinations that are usually plagued by tourists. While the industry as a whole is unlikely to see figures bounce back to pre-pandemic levels, the avid and well-versed traveller can capitalise on a unique opportunity to see destinations in a way we haven’t for decades, before the onset of ‘over-tourism’. In other words, be granted the ‘keys to the city’. Once travel restrictions are lifted, travellers could find the streets, piazzas and promenades of Florence, Venice and Rome refreshingly empty and the beaches of Skiathos and Mykonos virtually unscathed.

Russian Market
Long-haul optimism shines through for Russia Russia has been one of the key markets for the luxury travel industry and the pandemic has shown that Russians are ready to travel despite COVID-19 – albeit differently than before.

According to Vedomosti, in 2021 Turkey, the UAE, Cuba, Tunisia, Egypt, the Maldives, the Mediterranean, Dominican Republic and Thailand will remain popular destinations for Russian travellers, subject to their opening. The report noted, “the statistics for 2021 holidays show the optimism of Russian travellers. Even Thailand and Indonesia, which are currently closed for tourists, were included in the top searches.”

Down-to-earth authenticity
A growing interest in a relatively new trend for the Russian market is gaining momentum: glamping. In 2019, there were 60 glamping sites within the country and in 2020, there were over 120 with the number continuing to rise, signalling the increased demand for authentic, nature-led, domestic holidays. With this growing tendency in the country, Russians will be eager to rediscover glamping abroad once the borders are open and opt for unique experiences and ecotourism.

The rise of the ‘workation’
In 2020, it was reported in the research by SearchInform that 23% of companies in Russia have decided to completely switch to remote working. This, combined with the country’s ambitious mass vaccination programme, will allow Russian travellers to travel abroad for extended ‘workcations’ as well as a resurgence of long-haul leisure travel.

Conscious travel: from wellness to sustainability
The pandemic has brought more attention to the importance of prioritising health and wellbeing than ever before. While wellness holidays were gaining momentum pre-pandemic, they have emerged as a top trend for 2021 travel in Russia. Additionally, the planet’s health is no less important to Russian travellers as their own, with conscious and sustainable travel becoming an increasingly important factor for many Russian travellers who are more aware and educated on environmental issues.

GCC Market
Luxury travel has been a lynchpin for the GCC economy, specifically driven from the UAE, which leads the way globally in terms of destination marketing. Before the pandemic, the direct contribution of travel and tourism to the Middle East’s GDP was predicted by the World Travel and Tourism Council to reach $133.6 billion by 2028.

Accelerated vaccine rollout fuels a year of recovery
Given subdued oil prices and a general economic slowdown due to COVID-19 restrictions, it is clear that the regional economy will be relying on travel and tourism to recover quickly, evidenced in the rapid roll-out of the vaccine in the UAE, which is leading the world in terms of vaccines per capita and has already vaccinated a fifth of the population.

MENA Hotel Forecasts estimates that 2021 will be a year of recovery, based on the assumption that hotel performance across the region is already improving. Major destinations such as Dubai and Cairo are estimating 2021 occupancy levels of 68 per cent and 65 per cent respectively. Overall, the average year-on-year growth of the 20 destinations researched was 47 per cent.

Outbound tourism to recover faster than inbound
Many of the important source markets of UAE tourism are in regions where the vaccine response is not as far progressed, such as Europe. Therefore, whilst international travel routes remain unclear, experts are looking to the domestic market to fuel occupancy, especially in the short term, with 2021 expected to continue 2020’s theme of being the year of the staycation.

Outbound travel is expected to accelerate quickly once flights and borders open up. In a recent survey of UAE residents by travel company Kuoni, 50 per cent of survey respondents, which included Emirati Nationals, said that they are planning three or more holidays in 2021 if global travel advice allows, with the main reasons being missed holidays due to the pandemic and the desire to revisit treasured destinations with their families.

PRCO is a global communications group specialising in promoting organisations in the travel, real estate, and luxury lifestyle sectors. The Group was founded in 1989, the company’s offices are located in London, Paris, Milan, Munich, Moscow, Dubai, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.

Aurora Expeditions Reveals the Cutting-Edge Design of Its Second Purpose-Built Expedition Ship, the Sylvia Earle

Due for delivery in October 2021, the Sylvia Earle features the cutting-edge Ulstein X-BOW®, a core design element that's essential to the speed, agility and impressive fuel efficiency of the ships in the Aurora Expeditions fleet.

CEO Monique Ponfoort says: “It is really exciting to see a second X-BOW ship coming into market for Aurora Expeditions. Its innovative, eco-sensitive design captures the essence of small-ship expedition travel pioneered by Aurora Expeditions.”

Monique adds: “Our new purpose-built ship honours the highly accomplished marine biologist, oceanographer and explorer, Dr. Sylvia Earle, who is actively involved in the development of her namesake, and I look forward to working closely with Dr. Earle in the coming years.”

Global Head of Marketing, Victoria Primrose, notes: “The sleek new design of the Sylvia Earle has been created to reflect the pioneering nature of our ships and the adventurous activities we will undertake with our passionate expeditioners on board.”

“From a brand perspective, the bold design and use of our strong signature teal colour will make the Sylvia Earle instantly recognisable as an Aurora Expeditions ship,” she continues.

“We are thrilled that the build is on time despite the challenges the world has faced in 2020, and we look forward to welcoming our first expeditioners on board the Sylvia Earle as we venture to the world's most remote and fascinating destinations,” Victoria concludes.

The ship will visit many new destinations within the Aurora Expeditions program, including Alaska, Baja California, the Russian Far East, Raja Ampat and West Papua.

Aurora Expeditions ships boast one of the lowest polluting marine engines in the world, due to a combination of low energy consumption, high fuel-efficiency and a streamlined design. The state-of-the-art Tier 3 engine delivers an 80% reduction in emissions* and can utilise virtual anchoring to hold its position instead of dropping anchor on the delicate sea floor. On-board desalination plants convert seawater to fresh water that is safe to drink. Our ships therefore carry less fresh water on sea crossings, further reducing fuel consumption.

The Sylvia Earle will be the second in the fleet to sail with the patented ULSTEIN X-BOW®, whose inverted bow design, in combination with Rolls-Royce dynamic stabilisers, offers unrivalled stability and comfort1 on ocean crossings. The Ulstein X-BOW® cuts through sea swells, minimising vibrations and disturbances, and makes quicker transits through waves. This also helps reduce fuel consumption by up to 60%*.

The second ship of this design will break ground yet again. The Ulstein X-BOW® on the Sylvia Earle will feature a unique two-level glass lounge in the bow, offering extraordinary views to the front of the ship. In polar regions, this means that passengers will be able to appreciate the majesty of an iceberg immediately as it appears on the horizon. It will also feature an outdoor swimming pool, heated by repurposing engine heat, which will be a welcome addition in warmer regions.

*Tier 3 compared to the older Tier 1 engines.

1Aurora Expeditions does not claim that this will prevent or cure motion sickness or seasickness.

VIETNAM AND THAILAND TOP ASIA PACIFIC DESTINATIONS FOR RUSSIANS

Vietnam is becoming one of the top destinations in the Asia Pacific region for Russian visitors, with favourite Thailand still a close second, according to global travel analysis firm ForwardKeys.

The ForwardKeys survey reports that Vietnam saw the highest increase in Russian market seat capacity at 153%, followed by Thailand and the Maldives, which saw a growth of 125% and 58%, respectively. The Republic of Korea and India also saw seat capacity rising by more than 30%.

Vietnam is emerging as a favourite destination for Russian holiday-goers in recent years and is expected to surpass its neighbour Thailand, a favoured Russian haunt for a long time.

Market observers say the launch of direct air connections from multiple secondary and tertiary cities in Russia to Vietnam’s popular beach towns have propped up the Russian tourism boom.

The central province of Khanh Hoa, home to the famous beach town of Nha Trang City, has been much loved by Russian tourists, accounting for one-fifth of total foreign arrivals in Vietnam.

VIETNAM EMERGES TOP ASIA-PACIFIC TRAVEL CHOICE FOR RUSSIANS

Russian travelling to the Asia-Pacific region heavily favour Vietnam and neighbour Thailand, says global travel analysis firm ForwardKeys.

From May 2018 to April 2019, Russian arrivals to the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region rose 54.5 percent, far outstripping the 3.8 percent growth of international arrivals to the region, according to ForwardKeys data.

The huge spike in Russian travellers has been prompted by a doubling of direct flights from Russia to Asian tourist destinations, mainly in Vietnam and Thailand, with air seat capacity increasing by 38 percent overall.

The ForwardKeys survey shows Vietnam saw the highest increase in Russian market seat capacity at 153 percent, followed by Thailand and the Maldives, which saw a growth of 125 percent and 58 percent respectively. South Korea and India also saw seat capacity rising by more than 30 percent.

Vietnam has emerged as a favourite destination for Russian holiday-goers in recent years and is expected to surpass its neighbour Thailand, a favoured Russian haunt for a long time.

Market observers say the launch of direct air connections from multiple secondary and tertiary cities in Russia to Vietnam’s popular beach towns have propped up the Russian tourism boom.

Russia’s S7 Airlines last year launched a direct flight connecting Irkutsk City with Cam Ranh, an hour south of its much busier sister Nha Trang in the central province of Khanh Hoa, while Vladivostok Air had begun operating daily flights from major cities of Vladivostok and Khabarovsk to Vietnam’s Cam Ranh Bay even earlier.

Khanh Hoa, home to the famous beach town of Nha Trang, has been much loved by Russian tourists, accounting for one fifth of total foreign arrivals. Last year, Russian tourist arrivals to Khanh Hoa reached nearly 400,000, up 1.5 percent year-on-year, making it the second-biggest feeder market for local tourism after China.

“Vietnam is certainly going through tremendous growth in demand from the Russian market,” global media company Skift quoted Stephan Roemer, CEO of Diethelm Travel Group, as saying.

Russia is the sixth-largest source market for Vietnam’s tourism, with mainland China topping the list, followed by South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and the U.S.

Vietnam received a record high of 606,000 Russians last year, accounting for 4 percent of total foreign tourist arrivals.

Apart from visa exemptions for tourists from the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), Vietnam offers 15-day visa exemptions for visitors from the U.K., France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden and Belarus.

Russian tourists spend an average of $1,600 per stay in Vietnam while the average for foreign visitors overall is $900, according to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.

Photo: evisa.moip.gov.mm
Ministry of Hotels and Tourism has released a statement that it will issue the visa-on-arrival to the ordinary passport holders from Italy, Spain, Australia, Switzerland, Germany and Russia for the one-year probationary period, in a bid to encourage the inflow of tourists to Myanmar.

Under the visa-on-arrival system, tourists from these countries can enter Myanmar via Yangon International Airport, Mandalay International Airport and Nay Pyi Taw International Airport. The visa-on-arrival fee is 50 US dollars and the term of the visa-on-arrival is 30 days. They will be allowed to enter the country only with tourist visa alone. The ministry will not allow the extension of the visa-on-arrival. They will have to respect Myanmar’s existing laws and procedures. They will be allowed to freely visit the tourist sites apart from the restricted places.

On October 1, 2018, Myanmar allowed visa exemption for those who hold ordinary passports, from Japan, South Korea and China’s autonomous regions—Hong Kong and Macau. Chinese citizens who hold ordinary passport are allowed to enter the country with visa-on-arrival.

Till April 2019, the number of tourist arrivals hit over 1.5 million, a 23-per-cent increase compared with the same period last year. In addition, the number of Chinese tourist arrivals increased to 135 per cent, Korean tourist arrivals, 89 per cent and Japanese tourist arrivals, 24 per cent, according to the figures from the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population.

China topped the list of tourist arrivals with 212,419, followed by Thailand with 97,116, South Korea with 45,244, Japan with 43,708, the U.S with 26,595, France with 20,045, Singapore with 18,152, Vietnam, 17,980, India with 16,020 and Malaysia with 14,637,

VIETNAM BECOMES CHINA’S SECOND LARGEST TOURISM MARKET

Vietnam overtook South Korea to claim the second spot among the top 10 source markets for tourism in China last year.

According to statistics released late last month by China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, more than 6.3 million Vietnamese tourists visited the country last year, double the figure in 2016, making Vietnam the second biggest feeder market for Chinese tourism after Myanmar.

South Korea ranked third on the list of top 10 major markets for inbound tourism in China, followed by Japan, the U.S., Russia, Mongolia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore.

China, forecast to become the world’s most visited country by 2030 by global research company Euromonitor International, received a total of 141.2 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2018, up 1.2 percent from a year ago and earned $127 billion in tourism revenues.

China’s proximity to Vietnam has made it a popular destination among outbound Vietnamese travellers who want a vacation overseas without a long haul journey.

The surge in Vietnamese tourist numbers in China has been credited to the long shared border, prompting the governments of both countries to establish a special type of border travel, which does not require passports or visas.

The launch of more direct flights connecting Vietnam’s big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with China in recent years has also contributed to the growth in outbound Vietnamese travellers.

China has always been Vietnam’s main source of tourists in recent years, accounting for one-third of all foreign visitors. More than four million Chinese visitors arrived in Vietnam last year, up 48.6 percent year-on-year.

Survey results released last year by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, reveal the average daily spending by the Chinese in Vietnam increased from $118.6 in 2014 to $130 last year.
