Quito set to attract 700,000 visits in 2023

The number of non-resident visitors to Quito by mid-September 2023 is 94% of the target initially set by Quito Turismo for 2023.

It is expected that Quito will have attracted 700,000 visitors by the year end. 

At an elevation of 2,850 m (9,350 ft), it is the world’s highest capital city and the only place where it is possible to put one foot in the northern hemisphere and the other in the southern hemisphere. 

Quito’s historic centre was the world's first Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Constructed on the foundations of an ancient Incan city, it is known for a colonial centre with 16th and 17th-century churches and other buildings of European, Moorish and indigenous influence including its cathedral in the Plaza Grande square. 

Visitors to Quito from the USA make up 28% of all non-resident tourists, followed by Colombia (16%), Venezuela (10%), Spain (9%), Peru (8%), China (4%), and Germany, Mexico, Italy and Canada (each with 2%). It is a simple path which does not present great difficulties and is recommended for cyclists with previous experience in routes of at least two hours of cycling. 

Ruta Lloa a Palmira 

The path from Lloa a Palmira has short elevations and gentle descents and offers natural viewpoints including the Guagua Pichincha and Atacazo volcanoes.

Mirador del Pululahua 

The Mirador del Pululahua descends into the heart of one of the few inhabited craters in the world, with its dramatic descents forming the backdrop to many cycle races. 

Ruta Pacto, Mashpi 

In the parish of Pacto, 70 km from the capital, there are wide paths surrounded by mountains, with this route crossing a large part of the Conservation and Sustainable Use Area of MashpiGuaycuyacu-Sahuangal Protected Natural Area 

Ruta Nono, Alaspungo 

This is a 13 km stretch of less travelled paths and prolonged ascents with views of the Rucu and Guagua Pichincha volcanoes

Birdwatching in Quito

Quito, Ecuador's capital, is located in the Andean foothills at an altitude of 2,850m.

Constructed on the foundations of an ancient Incan city, it’s known for its well-preserved colonial center, rich with 16thand 17th-century churches and other structures blending European, Moorish and indigenous styles.

The birds of Quitto With over 1,660 species, Ecuador has the world’s greatest density of types of. Quito is a megadiverse cities when it comes to birds, with the variety of its ecosystems making it possible to observe all kinds of birds, from condors to hummingbirds. 

The city is home to over 542 species, including 64 that are endemic to the region, which include the black-breasted puffleg, the brown wood rail and the banded ground cuckoo. 

Worthy of note is the emblematic Andean condor which, with a wingspan of three metres and a weight of 12 kilos, is the largest flying bird in the world. 

It can be seen gliding over rural areas of Quito. Another species present in this area is the Andean cock-of-therock, a bird that is unique for its unusual courtship dance. 

The north-west of Quito is the perfect micro-destination for birdwatching, where in the Choco Andino Biosphere Reserve, hummingbirds, parrots, toucans and quetzals can be spotted. 

For urban birdwatching, the best places are the Botanical Garden, where a huge variety of migratory species can be seen, and the Guangüiltagua Metropolitan Park, home to the crimson-manteled woodpecker.

Latin America looks to restart it tourism industries

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is restarting its tourism with the development of 16 health protocols. 

The Costa Rica Tourism Board and representatives of the local private sector have unveiled a list of 16 health protocols for the safe reopening of some of the country’s most popular tourism areas affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Quito, Ecuador 

The Quito Tourism Board has announced a series of new measures to ensure the safe return of domestic and international tourism.

The Quito International Airport has resumed operations with strict sanitary security protocols and the Ecuador Tourism Authority has introduced guidelines and biosafety protocols to be implemented by all restaurants, hotels, attractions and establishments. Colombia
Colombia, with the support of the World Tourism Organisation, has launched a tourism biosecurity touristic seal to certify that hotels, bar, restaurants and other operators and tourist attractions comply with protocols established by the national government to combat the spread of coronavirus. Nicaragua 

Nicaragua has announced plans to reactivate tourism (which was growing 25% annually in Jan/Feb) in ways that follow biosecurity protocols. It will start with domestic travel, before moving onto regional and finally long-haul travel. All tourism will take place within the framework of the National Protocol against COVID-19, a tailored approach based on international co-operation. With the restart of tourism comes a number of new investments such as Puerto Salvador Allende, Managua’s dining / entertainment district, which is undergoing improvements and expansion, including 18 new eateries. Panama 

Panama has been recognised by the WHO as one of the countries with the fastest response to its first case of COVID-19. The country has decided to keep its borders closed to avoid further spread and is currently focusing on the revival of its domestic tourism. G Adventures Increases Commitment to Community Tourism With Project 100

G Adventures announced it has increased its commitment to community tourism with the introduction of an additional 25 Planeterra (G Adventures' non-profit partner) projects into its tours by 2020. This will bring the total number of projects to 100 globally, meaning 90% of the operator's small-group trips will visit a community tourism project supporting women and children, Indigenous culture and / or environmental conservation.

The new announcement supersedes the adventure operator's '50 in 5' initiative which was announced in 2015, and sought to add 50 projects to the pre-existing 25, bringing the total to 75 in 46 countries by 2020. The 50 in 5 project is now complete - 18 months early - with the announcement of the final five projects in Costa Rica, Ecuador, Botswana, Hungary, and Kyrgyzstan. Project 100 now commences as a new Planeterra initiative, with 25 new projects being announced later this year.

Bruce Poon Tip, founder of G Adventures, says giving back to local people in the communities the company travels to is built into the company's DNA, and this extended commitment to local people gives G Adventures even more opportunities to change lives through travel, for both local people and travellers.

Income from agriculture is limited, which led Planeterra to work with the cooperative to bring more tourism to the area resulting in an improved quality of life. 20 bicycles have been funded for the families to host travellers on cycling tours, and more than 1,000 G Adventures travellers will visit the community annually. This project is now live and can be visited on all departures of the 17-day '18-to-Thirtysomethings' Volcano Trail tour from Antigua, Guatemala to San Jose.
• Shandia Community Tourism - Ecuador - The Shandia community is inhabited by Indigenous Kichwa families who until now have had limited access to tourism. This has resulted in locals leaving for jobs in the city which puts the community at risk of losing their traditions and customs, as well as protection of their natural Amazonian environment. Planeterra and G Adventures have worked with the community to develop a cycling tour and chocolate-making class to be led by the village's youth. Each year, 850 G Adventures travellers will do this tour and stay at the Shandia Community Lodge which previously lacked the ability to attract enough customers. To visit, travellers can join an eight-day Ecuador Quest Classic tour which travels from Quito return.
• Nem Adom Fel - Budapset, Hungary - The Nem Adom Fel Foundation (meaning 'Never give up') was founded in 2005 with the mission to empower Hungarians living with disabilities, and the Roma community of the country, whose unemployment levels are higher than other Hungarians. Planeterra provided a grant to the foundation to upgrade the operations at its restaurant, the Nem Adom Fel Café and Bar. G Adventures will now take 1,000 travellers per year to the restaurant, meaning valuable income for the foundation to invest back into its programmes. All travellers on the eight-day National Geographic Journeys with G Adventures Explore Central Europe trip, travelling from Berlin to Budapest will dine at Nem Adom Fel.
• Dqae Qare San Lodge - D'Kar, Botswana - The San Lodge lodge, campsite, and wildlife area is the only freehold land owned by an Indigenous community in Southern Africa. The San are known for their warm hospitality, and the lodge provides much-needed employment for the nearby village of D'Kar, where revenue from tourism is invested in the local preschool, arts programme and museum. Planeterra has provided Dqae Qare San Lodge with a grant to upgrade their campsite where more than 1,000 G Adventures travellers will stay and learn about the history and culture of the San from their people directly. Travellers departing on the 18-Thirtysomethings Delta & Falls Overland trip, travelling from Windhoek to Victoria Falls, will stay at Dqae Qare San Lodge.
• Ak Orgo - Barskoon, Kyrgyzstan - Ak Orgo is a community social enterprise designed to celebrate cultural traditions and provide employment in a rural area of Kyrgyzstan where economic opportunities are limited. Planeterra provided funding for local tourism training and upgrades to facilities, and close to 500 G Adventures travellers per year will stop here for a traditional Kyrgyz lunch experience. They will also have the unique opportunity to learn how traditional yurts (nomadic tents) are built and the importance of this craft, as well as other traditional handicrafts. This project can be visited on all departures of the nine-day Highlights of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan trip travelling from Bishkek to Almaty and departing from June 2019.

All current and future G Adventures and Planeterra projects are selected according to the biggest benefit to the community resulting from traveller numbers. Particularly where women, youth and Indigenous people have been disadvantaged by a lack of access to education, jobs and income opportunities.
