The skies above north-east Victoria will become a theatre of colour and precision when the Art of Flight Festival arrives in Benalla from 6–12 April 2026. Set amid the region’s scenic landscapes, this week-long celebration of aviation and ballooning showcases elite skill, breathtaking visuals and community spirit, making it one of Australia’s most exciting new regional events.

With dawn flights, international competition and a glowing evening spectacle, the festival offers visitors a rare opportunity to witness the art and science of flight up close.

International Balloon Championships at Sunrise

Each morning, more than 25 elite hot air balloon teams from Australia and overseas will take to the skies in the International Balloon Championships. These dawn ascents provide a mesmerising start to the day, as vibrant balloons rise with the morning light and drift across the countryside.

The competition forms part of the Australian National Hot Air Balloon Championships, sanctioned by the Australian Ballooning Federation. Results from the Benalla event will help determine which Australian teams qualify to represent the nation at the 2026 World Championships in Krosno.

Fly with the Fleet: A Bucket-List Balloon Experience

Art of Flight Festival 

Visitors can elevate their festival experience by booking a passenger flight and joining the fleet at sunrise. Floating peacefully above patchwork farmland and waterways offers a once-in-a-lifetime perspective of Victoria’s high country landscapes.

As dusk settles over regional Victoria, the sky will shimmer with colour and music during The Art of Flight Balloon Glow on Saturday 11 April 2026. This enchanting evening spectacle invites visitors to gather under the twilight sky as towering hot air balloons illuminate from within, glowing in synchrony with music to create a magical fusion of light, sound and atmosphere.

Held near Wangaratta with shuttle services from Benalla, the event promises an unforgettable night of family-friendly entertainment, regional flavours and relaxed outdoor enjoyment.

A Mesmerising Glow Experience at Dusk

As the sun sets, the highlight begins. From 6.30pm to 7.30pm, giant balloons glow like lanterns against the evening sky, their rhythmic illumination choreographed to music. The effect is both calming and awe-inspiring, offering photographers and spectators a rare visual experience.

Visitors are encouraged to bring a blanket or low chair, settle in with food and wine, and enjoy the immersive atmosphere as the balloons light up the night.

Food, Music and Family Fun

Gates open at 4.00pm, with live entertainment setting the tone for the evening. Guests can explore food stalls offering a variety of flavours while enjoying live music throughout the event.

A new global campaign launched today by Visit Victoria creates an innovative platform that positions Victoria as an exciting and must-do travel destination. Victoria Tourism Industry Council CEO, Felicia Mariani, said introducing the campaign as the Australian Open 2024 throws open its doors to the world was the perfect way to showcase the excitement and energy that is part of Victoria’s DNA and the role of our enviable major events calendar that makes our state truly unique in Australia. 

“In recent times, destination marketing has simply become ‘more of the same’ with regions across the country and around the world all looking to attract us with their beautiful beaches, sunshine, blue waters, and pristine hinterland. 

Finding a point of difference that can really make a destination pop and inspire consumers has become increasingly elusive,” Ms Mariani said. “This new campaign for Victoria has landed on the perfect recipe, stretching the boundaries to illustrate why our state is ’Every Bit Different’ and lifting the lid on what sets Victoria apart in a stream of sameness in destination marketing.” 

Every Bit Different brings both metro Melbourne and the regions together under a single unifying brand and will promote regional Victoria in key interstate markets, something that has not occurred for nearly a decade. 

This new campaign will air for the first time today during the Australian Open 2024 broadcast, maximising one of the biggest sporting events in the world and an outstanding demonstration of Victoria’s extraordinary major events calendar. 

“Over the past decade, regional Victoria has largely been marketed to Victorians, encouraging them to travel in their own backyard. While this has been a sound strategy for activating the low-hanging fruit, regional Victoria has missed out on the increased overnight expenditure that comes with interstate visitation. That all changes from today," said Ms Mariani. 

“Most importantly, the industry is thrilled to see that this new campaign delivers a destination brand that is distinct from the Victorian State Government brand identity, providing a platform that industry can embrace and use in their own marketing efforts. 

“We have not had a distinct destination brand for the tourism industry in Victoria since 2015. Having the platforms of Victoria – Every Bit Different and Melbourne – Every Bit Different, means tourism operators across the state now have the ability to connect with these campaigns in a meaningful way and leverage the activity through their own marketing efforts.

A new children’s e-book which aims to virtually connect loved ones in a shared adventure through Melbourne’s famous laneways and surrounding iconic regions has been launched.

The e-book, Where In The World Is Melbourne? has been developed by Visit Victoria to bring together family members around the world for a shared adventure, a digital storytime experience using popular videotelephony technology.

In a tale of two families, the unique book can be read front-to-back or back-to-front. Each way provides a different international and local perspective on the family adventures that virtually await.

The parallel stories feature an overseas family, who are dreaming about the perfect holiday, while the other family from Melbourne are living out these dreams in their day-to-day life, as they explore the beautiful state.

Urban Aboriginal experiences

Melbourne has a rich history Aboriginal culture as a significant meeting place for social, sporting, educational and cultural events dating back more than 40,000 years.

Visitors can learn the history of the Kulin Nation through unique inner-city experiences to gain a deep understanding of the city’s traditional owners and most revered places of significance to Aboriginal people.

Royal Botanic Gardens
Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens is a significant cultural site for the local Kulin (Koolin) Nation and home to a number of Indigenous experiences that journey into their ancestral lands and explore their rich culture. Visitors can step into the award-winning Blak Box pavilion for SEASONS, an Indigenous deep listening experience from 6 March – 5 April. The multi-part sound work invites audiences to experience climatic and seasonal variation less as a weather event and more as a cultural phenomenon in an award-winning sound pavilion. The Gardens offers a number of experiences throughout the year, including the Royal Botanic Gardens Aboriginal Heritage Walk which takes visitors on a journey through a traditional meeting place and ancestral lands. The walk through these lush surrounds includes a traditional smoking ceremony with an Aboriginal guide who also explains the traditional uses of plants for food, tools and medicine as well as discussing the history and contemporary life of their people. Foodies can delve into the local First People's rich history, thriving culture and their connection to plants with a Bush Food Experience. Learn how Australian bush foods have inspired the modern plate and palate, and how native plants have been traditionally used and continue to be used around the world today. Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre
At the Melbourne Museum, visitors can learn about the diverse and vibrant cultures of Indigenous Australia at the Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre. The centre houses the First Peoples exhibition which is a collection of the many tools and artefacts of Indigenous Australia, cutting-edge digital displays, through to an outdoor garden featuring native plants and eels all in the one location. Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre also offers The First Peoples Tour which is a 1.5 hour guided journey with Aboriginal guides through the First Peoples exhibition. Koorie Heritage Trust
Located at Federation Square in Melbourne’s city centre, The Koorie Heritage Trust was set up to protect, preserve and promote the living culture of Indigenous peoples from Australia’s south east. The Koorie Heritage Trust holds an extensive collection of Koorie artworks and objects, art exhibitions, a gift shop and conducts tours with Aboriginal guides. The Ian Potter Centre: National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) Australia at Federation Square
The Ian Potter Centre at Federation Square is the world’s first major gallery dedicated exclusively to Australian art, and features a suite of galleries showcasing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art. After earning a reputation as a catering company dishing up fresh, seasonal and native fare, Mabu Mabu has opened its first permanent offering in Melbourne’s inner-west neighbourhood of Yarraville. Australian Sports Museum
The time-honoured Melbourne Cricket Ground has made history of its own with the opening of a landmark transformation of the Australian Sports Museum.

Opening just in time for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Final, featuring Katy Perry, the museum is home to Australia’s largest collection of sporting memorabilia, including Don Bradman’s baggy green cap, Cathy Freeman’s unforgettable running suit from the Sydney 2000 Olympics and the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games cauldron.

The new museum has been a year in the making and includes an Australian football section with an interactive Hall of Fame.

There’s also an upgraded education zone for school groups, new characters added to the popular ‘Pepper’s Ghost’ holograms, including Richmond Football Club premiership hero Bachar Houli and Carlton AFLW star Tayla Harris, and a new gallery celebrating Australia’s sporting culture.

Golden Tag Fishing Competition

The Victorian Fisheries Authority has established a tag-recapture competition to encourage recreational fishers to return to bushfire affected areas in East Gippsland and North East Victoria to help local communities get back on their feet. The first 10 tagged fish to be reported caught by fishers after the competition begins will earn the lucky fisher a $10,000 cheque, with tagged fish beyond the first 10 to be awarded a $2,000 cash prize. The fish have been tagged in waterway surrounding Mallacoota, Cann River, Bemm River, Orbost, Marlo, Lakes Entrance, Lake Tyers, Omeo, Dartmouth, Mitta Mitta, Corryong, Tallangatta and Bright. All these places are well known for their inland and estuarine fishing, boasting terrific opportunities for shore-based and boat-based fishers of all skill levels.

The city will light up with laughs when the Melbourne International Comedy Festival takes over town. For three and a half weeks, Melbourne will be the nation’s hive of happiness, injecting all-day, all-night infectious fun to the city. Be it family fun at Fed Square, glittering gala events or late-night laughs at Festival Club, there is a comedy thrill to fit everyone’s bill.

Ability fest

Australia’s most inclusive music festival, Ability Fest is designed to bring music lovers together by inviting everyone, regardless of gender, disability or race, to enjoy some of the country’s best musical acts. Festival goers will be treated to a slate of Australia’s best acts including Crooked Colours, SAFIA, What So Not, and Seth Sentry. Tram route 96: from the suburbs to the sea

Stretching from East Brunswick, through the bustling city and ending in sunny St Kilda. The 96 tram route explores the some of Melbourne’s best foods, art and markets.

Start the morning off with breakfast at East Brunswick’s truly unique CERES Environment Park. Just a 5-minute stroll from the Blyth and Nicholson street, the urban farm and educational centre has been spreading the word of sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint since opening in 1982. The on-premise café Merri Café dishes up wholesome meals produced using ingredients grown on site when possible. A Saturday visit will coincide with the weekly Makers and Flea Market where visitors will find a range of handmade and upcycled goods.

Hop back on the 96 down Nicholson Street to be whisked through Fitzroy. Depart at Stop 14 and mosey down Rose street towards Smith street to witness some of Melbourne’s iconic street art. Rose Street Artists’ Market is open from 10am on weekends with over 100 stalls on display. Shoppers can peruse the selection of jewellery, paintings and arts of all forms with the chance to interact directly with the designers in person. After a long morning of Market hopping consider a short 3-minute walk to Melbourne's heralded Lune Croissanterie. Considered by many to be the best Croissants in Australia this bakery is a must visit, just be prepared for the queue! For art fans - or anyone wanting to burn of those Lune calories, the Centre for Contemporary Photography is a short 4-minute walk and presents works by both established and emerging artists over 5 gallery spaces.

Back on the 96 heading south will take commuters past the Melbourne Museum and world heritage listed Royal Exhibition Centre into the centre of Melbourne. If the sun is out be sure to soak it up by heading to a rooftop bar for a tipple. Good Heavens, Madame Brussels and Loop Project Space & Bar are all a two-minute walk or less from Spring street. Grab a drink, enjoy the views and relax while deciding where to head next. Alternatively, for those feeling peckish head further down Bourke to Kinfolk to tuck into a delicious lunch. With an emphasis on fostering community Kinfolk offers opportunities to the disadvantaged through their training program teaching students the ins and outs of hospitality. In addition to this, the menu is packed with a rotating selection of seasonal dishes with ingredients purchased directly from producers. The whole experience is sure to leave customers feeling satisfied in the bellies and hearts.

Head over the Yarra River and snake through Southbank to end up just outside the always lively South Melbourne Market. With almost 150 stalls brimming with Melbourne’s freshest produce, meats, seafood as well as coffee, crafts and homewares it’ll be hard not to find something to suit every taste. Grab some berries or nosh on an oyster or four before getting back on the 96.

Gliding through Middle Park and into St Kilda commuters can catch a glimpse of the iconic Luna Park from the tram with a final stop at Acland street, the heart of St Kilda. To decompress head over to Piccolino Gelatoria and indulge in the traditionally made selection of Gelatos while ambling over to St Kilda beach to catch the sunset. If it’s not time for dessert yet consider Radio Mexico. A casual eatery offering mouth-watering authentic Mexican cuisine and a comprehensive drink list. Order up a few shared dishes, a refreshing Margarita and grab a spot outdoors to cap the day off with some twilight people watching.

Wine Down Pop Up returns

A unique vineyard escape is now available at three of Victoria’s premier wineries, with the much anticipated return of Wine Down Pop Up.

The limited time activation sees beautifully crafted eco-luxury pods by Contained move across three popular wine regions from March to May 2020: the Yarra Valley (Seville Estate), Mornington Peninsula (Montalto) and Rutherglen (All Saints Estate).

A third pod, brand new for 2020 and available to all winery visitors will house an immersive wine bar showcasing Victorian wines and produce via a bespoke virtual reality experience. Visitors can book a session, or simply drop in, to engage their senses with regional Victoria in an entirely new way.

As part of the VR session, guests will sample wines and matched foods from each of Victoria’s newly framed hero wine regions, which include the Pinot Coast (Geelong & Bellarine Peninsula, Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland), Shiraz Central (Heathcote, Pyrenees, Grampians, Bendigo, Ballarat, Macedon Ranges and Goulburn Valley), King Valley Prosecco Road, Muscat of Rutherglen and Yarra Valley.

But the most difficult part is choosing which winery to visit!

The boutique stay will open at stunning Seville Estate in the Upper Yarra Valley from February 28 to March 28. Located just over an hour’s drive from Melbourne, Seville Estate is surrounded by award-winning wineries such as Oakridge Wines and Tarra Warra Estate, where visitors can also indulge their creative sides at the Tarra Warra Museum of Art. Foodies can tuck into a meal at new restaurant, Heartswood from Matt Binney (former head chef at Merricote) or relax in the leafy surrounds of Coombe. Splash out with a morning above the valley with Global Ballooning or stay grounded with a bike rental from Cog Cafe on the Warburton Trail.

The pop up hotel will move to Montalto in the heart of the Mornington Peninsula on Victoria's Pinot Coast from April 3 to May 2. Visitors can meander through the Montalto Sculpture Trail or soothe the body and soul at Peninsula Hot Springs, before refuelling at one of the region's many hatted restaurants: the recently reopened Ten Minutes By Tractor is a must for special occasions, whereas Rare Hare at Jackalope provides a slightly more casual, convivial atmosphere.

The third and final location for the temporary retreat will be the family owned All Saints Estate, from May 8 to June 7. Located in historic Rutherglen, famous for its Muscat, lodgers will have countless activities to choose from such as private tastings, a picnic by the duck pond or a leisurely stroll to St Leonards vineyard. Tuck into local produce at the Pickled Sisters cafe and while away the afternoon with a gentle 'Pedal to Produce' cycle tour of the region. Melbourne is home to Australia’s first surf park; URBNSURF. Surfers are no longer restricted to the coast, visitors can now hit the waves in an urban environment. URBNSURF parks, provide perfect, ocean-like waves in an authentic, safe and controlled environment, catering to all ages and abilities in the city’s west at Tullamarine. Four levels of surfing are available with learning to surf, beginners, intermediate and advanced. Along with the option to watch, visitors can grab a bite to eat at the on-site restaurant, Three Blue Ducks set to open soon.

Gogyo Fitzroy
Japanese ramen dining has a new home in Fitzroy. Gogyo have been serving up ramen in Sydney for the past three years and have just opened their sister store on the corner of Brunswick and Westgarth street in Melbourne. Their signature dish is kogashi (burnt miso) ramen but they also do a range of rice, wagu and sushi dishes served with Japanese style cocktails. Outside there’s a 10-metre mural detailing the ramen-making process and highlighting the five main elements: fire, wood, earth, metal and water painted by Japanese artist Kentaro Yoshida.

Lekker
Pop-up restaurant, Lekker has made a temporary home at the Windsor. Focusing on Dutch cuisine, Lekker is a neo bistro offering the option of tasteful bar snacks or a set menu. Headed up by Rob Kabboord, best known as the co-owner and chef of Northcote fine diner Merricote and then as chef de cuisine at Sydney fine diner Quay. But you’ll have to get in quick because as they say, they’re here for a good time, not a long time.

A new wine bar with an Indian flair has opened on Flinders Lane. Serving a Thali platter for lunch (it’s literally the only thing available on the menu) and small plates for dinner including lobster roll with curry chips and vindaloo momo dumplings. The stylish bar is decked out in velvet, with a black-and-white terrazzo bar and complete with a golden champagne trolley on the outskirts of the room. There’s an extensive wine list of 220 bottles which are also available for guests to take home.

Mary’s
Sydney burger bar Mary’s has hit Melbourne down a narrow alley off Franklin Street in the CBD. With the menu graffitied on the walls, Mary’s is slinging burgers, fried chicken and potato mash with gravy which is all available as a vegan option. They also have a wild cocktail list including a Unicorn Cooler, Margarita’s and a Bloody Mary served with a melted square of cheese.

Keith Haring Collingwood mural
An iconic 1984 Keith Haring mural has come out of hiding on Johnston Street in Collingwood. The mural’s been hidden behind protective hoarding since 2017, but the construction covering it was removed to coincide with the near completion of the Collingwood Arts Precinct, which now occupies the site. The Collingwood mural is one of only 31 known murals across the world by Haring that have survived, and one of only three that hasn’t been significantly over-painted. The Unveiling also aligns with the NGV’s Keith Haring | Jean Michel Basquiat: Crossing Lines exhibition which is now open.

Punchin’ Bottles
A pop-up wine shop has opened on Russel Street. Embla’s Christian McCabe, winemaker Patrick Sullivan and importer Eric Narioo are taking over a long-serving music shop until it’s demolished later in 2020. Punchin’ Bottles offer a wide selection of local, independent and small-batch producers. You’ll also find champagne from France, sangiovese from Italy but the focus is on local made wines making it the perfect last-minute pick up for BYO in the city.

Axil Coffee Roasters have a new venue open at Melbourne Airport brewing up all your pre-flight coffee needs. There’s freshly made sandwiches, jaffles, salads and of course, the coffee menu; with a seasonal espresso blend for milk-based coffees and a daily rotating single origin for black-coffee drinkers, and batch brews. Melbourne street artist, Adnate has painted a large-scale mural covering one of the walls. You’ll find it between the Virgin Terminal and international terminal.

Nightjar in the City
Over four weeks in February, Geelong will be immersed in the magical atmosphere of live music, roving performers, buskers and culinary delights. Discover many emerging designers or maybe you will find yourself in the depths of 'dessert lane'. If chilling out is more your speed, dust off the picnic rug, listen to the talented live musicians on the main stage and indulge in some of the region’s best boutique crafted beers and wine. Irresistible Ice Cream Festival
The end of summer as we are well aware, does not always mean the end of hot days and what better way to cool down than to chill out at the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery annual Ice Cream Festival. Ice cream lovers will be able to indulge in a suite of 144 different artisan flavours crafted by their team of talented Chocolatiers. 12 new flavours will be introduced every day for you to try – old time favourites, classic combinations as well as interesting exotic creations all made fresh daily using only the finest quality ingredients. Apollo Bay Seafood Festival
Over three days of oysters, prawns, wine and sustainability talks on the Great Ocean Road, head to Apollo Bay for a truly unique and memorable pescatarian experience with perfect sea views. A highlight of the event is picking your own fresh seafood from the morning’s catch, direct from the fishermen at an off the boat seafood market. 14-16 February. Riverboats Music Festival
The Riverboats Music Festival returns in 2020 with its signature combination of world class live music and family-friendly vibes, all within the superb natural surrounds of Echuca's Aquatic Reserve. Lennon: Through a Glass Onion

Montalto Sculpture Prize 2020
An integral part of a visit to Montalto is wandering through the Sculpture Trail so what better time to head to the winner of the 18th year of Montalto Sculpture Prize is announced. The Acquisitive Sculpture Prize is among the most valuable private sculpture prizes in Australia and 2020 marks its 18th year. The Sculpture Trail collection takes in 30+ pieces joined from February through to end of August by the annual Montalto Sculpture Prize Exhibition of Finalists. 23 February. Grampians Music Festival

Paynesville Classic Boat Rally
This event is deemed to be the biggest classic boat festival, promising to deliver a spectacular collection of over 300 classic boats on water, ranging from Tall Ships, to sailing vessels, classic motor boats, skiffs, fishing boats, small crafts and more. On land the trailered boats make a fantastic display of classic wooden, fiberglass and rowing boats. Rooftop dinghies will line the foreshore and music, entertainments and maritime stall holders will await your discovery. 28 Feb – 1 March. WILD Sand Sculpting
Take a walk on the WILD side as you journey on a sand safari where you will see elephants, monkeys, whales and more, brought to life through incredible sand sculptures. 18 Australian and International sculptors have put in over 5,000 hours and use 700 tonnes of sand to craft these life-sized sculpted masterpieces that span across the earth’s seven continents. Uncover the secrets in the sand and solve the puzzles to find out how we can all help these endangered animals. Until 26 April.
