QT Newcastle: A Bold New Stay Inside a 113-Year-Old Icon

QT Newcastle
A Heritage Treasure Reimagined

In the heart of Newcastle’s historic East End, a century-old landmark has been transformed into one of the city’s most distinctive boutique stays. QT Newcastle, housed in the beautifully restored 113-year-old former David Jones building, blends heritage charm with the contemporary flair the QT brand is known for. Its striking design, bold personality and coastal-inspired luxury make it a standout destination for travellers seeking something truly unique.

Where History Meets Modern Coastal Style

Every corner of QT Newcastle reflects a thoughtful balance between past and present. The building’s original architectural character has been preserved, while the interiors—designed by long-time QT collaborator Nic Graham—bring in fresh energy inspired by the region’s coastline. The hotel’s 104 rooms and suites feature soft coastal hues, textured finishes and modern comforts, creating inviting spaces that feel both stylish and deeply connected to their surroundings.

Guests are greeted by a giant moon sculpture in the lobby, a playful signature touch that hints at the creativity woven through the entire hotel. From the moment you step inside, QT Newcastle feels like an experience rather than just a place to stay.

A Dining Scene That Elevates the Stay

QT Newcastle Rooftop Bar
On the ground floor, Jana serves as the hotel’s contemporary Italian neighbourhood restaurant. Its seasonal menus highlight refined flavours, crafted with locally sourced produce and accompanied by a curated selection of wines. The warm atmosphere and thoughtful hospitality make it an ideal spot for both hotel guests and local diners.

Upstairs, the rooftop bar offers sweeping views across Newcastle’s cityscape and the ocean beyond. It is the perfect setting to unwind with a drink while watching the light shift across the harbour or the sunset glow over the coastline.

A Perfect Base to Explore Newcastle’s East End

QT Newcastle places guests right in the heart of one of the city’s most fascinating precincts. The East End is known for its heritage architecture, ocean breezes and lively cultural scene. From coastal walks and historic landmarks to vibrant dining and boutique shopping, everything is within easy reach. The hotel’s blend of luxury, creativity and history makes it an ideal base for a romantic escape, a weekend getaway or a stylish city stay.

Artful Indulgence by the Harbour: My Stay at QT Auckland

QT Auckland Lobby
Design Meets Comfort in Auckland’s Trendiest Hotel

After a dynamic few days attending MEETINGS 2025, I checked into QT Auckland—an experience that effortlessly transformed a productive business trip into a luxurious escape. Perfectly located in the heart of Viaduct Harbour, QT blends bold art, playful design, and indulgent comfort with a distinct personality that few hotels manage to capture so seamlessly.

A Grand Welcome in the Heart of Creativity

The QT experience began the moment I stepped into the lobby. Inspired by the textures and tones of the sea, the interiors burst with creative flair. Think oyster shell motifs embedded into the carpet, sculptural lighting that twists like waves above your head, and quirky art pieces that add charm and personality to every corner. The check-in process was swift and warm, with friendly staff who struck the perfect balance between professional and relaxed.

oyster shell motifs in the carpet
What struck me most was the atmosphere—this wasn’t a typical hotel lobby. It was a gallery-like space, brimming with creativity, alive with energy, textures, and visual storytelling. The lighting was soft yet dramatic, casting playful shadows across the space, while the seating areas were both stylish and inviting, perfectly balancing comfort and design. The overall effect was both theatrical and welcoming, creating an environment that felt effortlessly chic yet accessible. I felt instantly at ease, drawn into the space’s unique charm, and entirely intrigued by what lay beyond the lift doors, as if a whole new world awaited just around the corner.

A Stylish Selection of Rooms and Suites

QT Auckland offers a variety of accommodation types, each one brimming with its signature flair. Whether you're in town for business or leisure, there’s a space to match your style and needs.

The QT King room is a perfect choice for travellers who want contemporary comfort with artistic edge. It offers a Super King bed, sleek finishes, and all the essentials wrapped in a creative and cozy layout.

My QT Junior Suite
I stayed in the QT Junior Suite, a spacious luxury suite that more than holds its own against the hotel’s top-tier offerings. Located on the higher floors with sweeping, unobstructed views over the Viaduct and beyond, the suite is a true haven above the city, offering a tranquil escape. Lavish textures, soothing warm tones, and bold design details blend seamlessly to create a striking yet inviting atmosphere, making it a true visual and sensory retreat where every corner exudes comfort and style.

My QT Junior Suite
The suite includes all the in-room features you’d expect—and more: a Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer, Kevin Murphy amenities, a dedicated workspace, minibar, complimentary Wi-Fi, Bose speaker, and room service by QT.

My QT Junior Suite
What truly stood out for me, though, was the bathtub positioned in the main room behind the bed. After a long day at the conference, soaking in that tub was an unexpected highlight. It added a luxurious, spa-like element that transformed a standard business trip into a moment of indulgence.

I especially enjoyed the supplied anihana Blue Ocean bath bomb and the peppermint and lime Muscle Soak Bath Salts—both added the perfect finishing touch to a well-earned unwind.

A Mediterranean Journey at Esther

Wood fired oven at Esther
Dining at Esther was a highlight in itself. Though often seen as a breakfast spot, Esther is far more than that, offering a refined yet approachable dining experience throughout the day. With its warm and inviting ambiance, the restaurant seamlessly transitions from morning light to evening glow, providing the perfect setting for any meal. The full lunch and dinner menu features an exquisite range of dishes, each rooted in the vibrant, sun-soaked flavours of the Mediterranean coastline. Fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, from seafood to seasonal produce, are thoughtfully combined to capture the true essence of the region, with each plate telling its own story of bold flavours, aromatic herbs, and rich textures. It’s not just a meal, it’s an experience—one that transports you to the heart of the Mediterranean with every bite.

My dinner pasta
I began my culinary journey with dinner: a beautifully balanced pasta dish of linguine, delicately infused with the vibrant golden hue of Te Anau saffron, and brightened by the zesty punch of fresh lemon. Topped with a generous sprinkling of Parmigiano, the dish was rich, fragrant, and deeply satisfying. Each bite was a harmonious blend of bold citrus, the earthy warmth of the aromatic saffron, and the indulgent, silky creaminess of the cheese, creating a symphony of flavors that lingered long after the last forkful. The pasta itself was perfectly cooked, tender yet with just the right bite, making for a truly memorable start to the evening

My one-pan brekkie
The next morning’s one-pan brekkie didn’t disappoint either. Served up with care, it featured two perfectly cooked wood-fired hens’ eggs, their yolks golden and runny, paired with crispy, free-range streaky bacon that had just the right amount of smoky crispness. Accompanying this was Burton and Baz’s rich, spicy chorizo sausage, bursting with robust flavour, alongside roasted Spanish tomatoes that were sweet, juicy, and slightly charred, adding a subtle depth. All of this was perfectly complemented by slices of warm, toasted sourdough—crispy on the outside, soft and airy on the inside. Hearty, rustic, and brimming with flavour, it was the kind of breakfast that not only satisfied but left you eagerly anticipating the next bite.

My pizzetta
One afternoon, I opted for a comforting lunch from the Esther Bar: a pizzetta topped with confit garlic, rosemary, ricotta, honey, and pine nuts—crispy and indulgent—paired with a fragrant free-range chicken soup enriched with saffron, couscous, and green vegetables. Simple, satisfying, and elegantly presented.

Esther invites guests on a journey—a coastal stroll along the French Riviera, a sun-drenched lunch in Sicily, or a spice-laden detour through Morocco. The menu reflects the warmth and diversity of these regions, brought to life using New Zealand’s finest produce and seafood.

Inspired by his own travels, the Chef, Sean Connolly, brings tradition and innovation together. His dishes are built on honest simplicity, elevated with bold flavour and a touch of theatrical flair. Seafood, often caught daily, plays a central role—showcased with respect for both seasonality and sustainability.

Esther Restaurant
The restaurant’s open, country-style kitchen adds a welcoming, homely feel to the experience. Watching the chefs work with precision and passion gives guests a real connection to the food they’re about to enjoy.

Whether it’s a long lunch, romantic dinner, or relaxed breakfast with a view, dining at Esther is both a comfort and a celebration.

Sky-High Sips at Rooftop at QT

View over Viaduct
The hotel’s rooftop bar, perched high above the Viaduct, offers panoramic views of Auckland’s glittering harbour and skyline—making it one of the most stylish spots in the city to unwind. After a full day at the convention centre, it was the ideal place to relax with a sundown drink in hand. The vibe was upbeat but laid-back, the music carefully curated, and the cocktails expertly crafted. Whether you're a fan of classic mixes or adventurous infusions, the bar staff delivered with flair. With the golden hour casting a warm glow over the marina, it was easy to lose track of time in this sky-high sanctuary.

QT Auckland Gym & Fitness Centre

QT Auckland features a 24‑hour fitness centre, ensuring guests can work out at their convenience—whether it's an early-morning cardio session or a late-night strength routine.

QT Auckland gym
The gym is well‑equipped with a range of modern exercise machines and free weights, designed to cater to varying workout styles—from weight training to cardio . This fitness centre offers everything needed for a solid full-body workout.

Located on-site and accessible anytime, the gym complements the hotel’s 24-hour service ethos, matching the convenience of its reception and room service.

Standout Hospitality with a Personal Touch

What truly set QT Auckland apart was its service—thoughtful, engaging, and full of personality. From the moment I arrived, I felt like more than just another guest. At check-in, I was greeted with genuine warmth and a light-hearted welcome that instantly put me at ease after a busy day.

Welcome treats
Once in my suite, I discovered a handwritten note from the team, welcoming me by name and wishing me a restful stay. It was accompanied by a small tray of locally inspired treats—an unexpected and delightful surprise that made me feel truly looked after.

Throughout my stay, every staff interaction felt intentional. Whether it was housekeeping checking if I needed anything extra, or restaurant staff remembering my coffee order in the mornings, those small gestures added up to an experience that felt personal and tailored. The team seemed to take real pride in what they do, infusing a bit of creativity and charm into every moment. It’s that rare kind of hospitality that makes a place memorable long after checkout.

Sustainability at the Heart of Hospitality

QT Auckland artwork
QT Auckland is not only focused on delivering exceptional guest experiences but also on minimizing its environmental footprint. The hotel demonstrates a genuine commitment to sustainability through practical and thoughtful initiatives. Water refill stations on every floor encourage guests to reduce plastic waste, while the move away from single-use plastics throughout the property reflects a broader effort to protect the planet.

Locally sourced ingredients in the restaurant support regional producers and reduce food miles, aligning with the hotel’s eco-conscious ethos. Energy-efficient lighting and waste reduction programs are also in place, showcasing how luxury and responsibility can go hand in hand. Staying at QT Auckland means you can indulge in style while knowing your stay supports sustainable practices that benefit both the community and the environment.

Meetings and Events with Mediterranean Flair

QT Auckland bar
QT Auckland’s event space, Limani, offers a stylish and versatile setting for meetings and private gatherings. Designed as a luminous hideaway, it’s perfect for shaking up a corporate catch-up or adding sun-soaked sass to a cocktail event. Flooded with natural light, Limani can comfortably cater for groups ranging from 5 to 80 guests, whether for an intimate dinner or a larger function. The room features wireless in-ceiling projectors and drop-down screens seamlessly integrated into its sophisticated design, ensuring a smooth tech experience. To complete the occasion, guests can indulge in specially curated menus from Esther, QT’s signature Mediterranean restaurant, bringing a taste of the sweet Mediterranean life to every event.

The Perfect Base for Business or Leisure

QT Auckland Esther
QT Auckland’s location couldn’t have been better—perfectly positioned in Viaduct Harbour, right in the heart of the city’s vibrant waterfront district. Whether you’re in town for work or play, the hotel places you just steps from Auckland’s top attractions, dining hotspots, ferry terminals, and commercial centres.

For business travellers, QT Auckland offers a convenient and well-connected base. The soon-to-open New Zealand International Convention Centre, along with major corporate offices, are all within easy walking distance. The seamless blend of comfort, thoughtful amenities, and attentive service makes it easy to shift from work mode to relaxation—especially with the rooftop bar just a short elevator ride away.

For those exploring Auckland at a more leisurely pace, QT is equally well suited. From the Sky Tower and waterfront promenades to nearby galleries, boutique shopping, and nightlife, the best of the city is right on your doorstep. After a day of sightseeing or a full conference schedule, returning to a space that balances style, warmth, and creativity is the ultimate reward.

Gowings Enters Its Green Era With the Colour of the Season

Gowings' summer menu is shaking up the season with a saturation of vibrant verde. Led by QT Chef and Creative Culinary Director, Sean Connolly, dishes are awash with green and colour on the plate, brimming with zesty flavours from pickling and preserves.

Fresh seafood is a focus, with dishes such as Kinkawooka pickled mussels with green tomato and salt cod baccala with radish and crostini. In an ode to Gowings' Italian roots, the handmade ravioli verde is a deep emerald dish with prawns and burnt sage.

“I want to excite people's palates, for them to feel reborn when they take a bite and see the pop of colour. Already, the Kinkawooka pickled mussels are a hit. The combo of the acidity of the green tomatoes and the vinegars and salts from the pickled mussels creates an explosion in the mouth”, says Connolly.

The restaurant's award-winning wine list, which recently won three glasses at Australia's Wine List of the Year Awards, evolves alongside the seasonal menu. Led by QT Sydney's Head Sommelier, Samantha Belt recommends, “Our Pieropan 'La Rocca' Soave Classico from Veneto Italy has the hallmark soave acidity paired with a rich exotic palate, making it a perfect pairing for our summer dishes.”

Where Italian food and great Australian beef and produce come together, Gowings' 1.5kg grain fed T-bone bistecca alla fiorentina from Riverine, NSW, is a carnivore classic and here to stay.

Gowings is open Tuesday to Friday for lunch, and Monday to Saturday for dinner.

Be Our Guest Restaurant Takeover to Support Local Farmers

Indulge your taste buds with a true paddock to plate experience that's as delicious as it is impactful at QT Gold Coast this month. Grab your fork and pack your comfiest feasting attire for QT's newest luxury food and wine experience – Be Our Guest – in support of local farmers.

Be Our Guest is a year-long collaboration with local producers who are doing it tough whether they've been affected by bushfires, drought or the impacts of COVID-19.

Once a month, QT Gold Coast's Bazaar Marketplace will invite guests to an intimate food and wine experience where QT's award winning Chefs will work with each producer to curate a one-of-a-kind five course showstopper to hero their products and flavours. Guests will taste, sample and swill while engaging with the producer and discovering their personal stories.

The series kicks off with Tommerup's Dairy Farm, from the Scenic Rim. The sixth-generation dairy farm, with dynamic farming duo Dave and Kay Tommerup at the helm, has been part of the fabric of the Scenic Rim since 1874. After suffering through one of the worst droughts in history, as well as the impacts of bushfires and the ongoing effects of COVID-19, the pair have evolved their business in true farming spirit to overcome these challenges. Kay and Dave's new and ethically farmed products deliver an authentic farm to plate experience for the conscious consumer.

“We're both very passionate about keeping the farm going for future generations and we want to respect and honour the previous generations who have farmed here. We love helping our visitors connect with where their food comes from,” Kay says.

“As farmers, we take a huge amount of pride in producing the highest quality products for our fellow Australians, but we need the consumer to take pride in being part of the food chain as well. We need them to recognise value in supporting sustainability, innovation, and quality – farmers can't continue to strive for these things without knowing the consumer has our back too. Food security is everyone's responsibility and by connecting farmers and consumers, we can all feel part of shaping our food future.

“We're thrilled to be part of QT's Be Our Guest event series commencing on February 28 and to showcase some of our produce. We can't wait to taste the dishes the chefs create with our products!”

QT Chefs have designed a premium menu to hero Tommerup's dairy products in a five-course menu to bring out the flavours of Tommerup's creamery and pork products, with an optional wine tasting pairing. Guests are invited to fill their suitcase with products to continue to support local producers such as the Tommerup's.

Be Our Guest: Tommerup's Dairy Farm takes place on February 28 at 12pm at Bazaar Marketplace, QT Gold Coast. Tickets $135pp. QT will donate 5% of the ticket price to Drought Relief.

Get Grounded, Gorgeous! in-Room Meditation Now Streaming at QT Hotels & Resorts

Every month is wellness month at QT Hotels & Resorts. To help guests mentally, physically and spiritually balance, QT has introduced in-room meditations streaming nationwide - encouraging guests to get grounded in delicious downtime with every luxurious sleepover.
Adding a little Yin to guest's Yang, the bespoke meditations were created in partnership with Soul Alive's Chief Soul Officer, Luke McLeod, in response to COVID-19's impact on mental health and wellbeing. A recent report by Grattan Institute found mental health hotlines in Australia have recorded a 25-to-50 per cent increase in calls compared to the same time last year and the unemployment rate is expected to rise to 10 per cent.

McLeod said: “With the additional stress and anxiety COVID-19 has brought into our lives it's more important than ever to take time to look after our mental wellbeing. Soul Alive's mission has always been to make meditation as easy and enjoyable as possible. And what better way to do that than from the comfort of a luxury QT room? We're excited to being giving guests 24/7 access to feel clear, calm and confident.”

The guided practices are tailored to guests travelling for both business and pleasure, inviting them to book some time to truly unwind. The meditation styles are split into three categories; Recharge, designed for a boost of energy and generous helping of mental clarity before a big business meeting in one of QT's stylish event spaces; Relax, recorded from the comfort of a QT Dream Bed (with the intent for the listener to do the same), this meditation was created to help the listener power down and unwind; and Kickstart, a wake-me-up practice challenging espresso for our favourite morning ritual, guiding listeners to start the day with a clear mind and full heart.

From first time meditators to masters of mindfulness, Get Grounded, Gorgeous! caters to zen enthusiasts of all levels. QT Hotels & Resorts' latest in room offering is designed to help guests return to balance and get back to their best self.

QT's Get Grounded, Gorgeous! is available complimentary via the in-room screens at QT Hotels & Resorts nationwide.

A First Look Inside QT Auckland. Rooms Now on Sale

QT Hotels & Resorts today unveils the first look at the highly-anticipated QT Auckland. With its doors set to open later this year, QT Auckland is now accepting bookings to stay and play in Viaduct Harbour's newest hub for quirky luxury from 1st November 2020. Creating a world less conventional in the heart of Auckland, the new waterfront playground will bring a transformative escape to each individual guest.

The award-winning QT Hotel Group is one of New Zealand and Australia's most loved and dynamic hotel brands, blending the perfect mix of design, luxury, people and critically-acclaimed food and beverage outlets to deliver its widely recognised signature service. QT has pioneered the philosophy of 'expect the unexpected', with every property delivering an experience and design that combine local influences and lashings of quirk, ensuring each hotel is a character in its own right. QT Auckland is no exception, celebrating its city surrounds and reflecting the harbourside locale.

Complementing the much-loved QT Queenstown and QT Wellington, QT Auckland is the third QT property in New Zealand and has been designed with the natural, wild beauty of the city's surrounding landscape in mind.

Long-time QT collaborator and designer Nic Graham in conjunction with the Event Hospitality and Entertainment design team have curated the contemporary yet timeless design. The design flows through the 150 rooms and suites, public spaces and meeting rooms, and carries through to the restaurant and rooftop bar. Harnessing the idea that beauty lies within, the theme of discovery is a central narrative throughout the designer hotel experience.

Drawing inspiration from the oyster and oyster trawler, Graham has created a visual feast. The oyster's influence can be seen throughout the design – the rough, raw and natural textures of the outside of the shell juxtaposed with the smooth, clean and luxurious nature of the inside. New Zealand's natural hues lend themselves to the colour scheme, mingling with bold block colours for contrast. Each room's furniture and décor also celebrate this rare beauty, mixing warmth and texture. Exposed concrete and brass accents feature alongside plush sofas, luxurious rugs and sassy furniture.

Nic Graham said: “We have blended contrast and quirk for QT Auckland as we have with each unique QT Property. The idea was onset by my first visit to Auckland and a dozen oysters - the salty sweet is a metaphor for the design, where we have elevated the bold use of colour and created a cocooning interior that uses interesting local materials and suppliers, adding to the harbour-based neighbourhood narrative of QT Auckland.

“We have mixed custom furniture with found objects and iconic originals, creating an unmistakeable QT experience. Bold environmental graphics draw from the wonderlands of the NZ coast and we proudly support local and international artists throughout the hotel.”

Whilst design is an important ingredient to the QT philosophy, each QT hotel across New Zealand and Australia blends personalised guest experiences, unforgettable dining and a signature touch of quirk.

Delivering on this philosophy and leading the QT Auckland team is General Manager Doron Whaite. With a 15-year hospitality career including roles at QT Sydney and QT Perth, Whaite and the team will bring QT Auckland to life with the same energy and vibrancy guests have come to love from the QT brand.

Doron Whaite said: “The experience philosophy behind each QT is to 'expect the unexpected'. QT Auckland will certainly deliver this, with unpredictable twists across art and design, throughout the dining outlets, and amplified through our people, delivering a highly-personalised signature service to each guest.

“QT Auckland will be a truly immersive experience. Channelling the local neighbourhood while adding QT's luxuriously quirky design, it's unlike anything the Auckland hotel market has seen before. With stunning waterfront views and QT's signature dining concepts, we can't wait for locals and visitors to experience what will undoubtedly be one of Auckland's finest hotels.”

With public spaces bursting with local artwork and private function space steps from the water, QT Auckland will also boast a signature dining concept in collaboration with celebrated international chef Sean Connolly and a rooftop bar that offers sweeping views of Viaduct Harbour.

QT Auckland is being developed in partnership with Russell Property Group and Lockwood Property Group. Located at 4 Viaduct Harbour Avenue, QT Auckland will be the tenth QT Hotel and the third in New Zealand, joining QT Wellington and QT Queenstown.

QT Auckland is now accepting bookings from 1st November. For more information and to make a booking, visit qthotels.com/auckland.

Innovative New Technology Revolutionising Conference and Event Sector: Event Hospitality & Entertainment Launch Got it Covered

EVENT Hospitality & Entertainment Limited (EVENT) has launched its newest development in the conference and event space, Got it Covered, a purpose-built mobile site to enhance conference and event organisation across QT, Rydges and Atura hotels and resorts in Australia and New Zealand.

The new conference and event platform is revolutionising the way hotel and event organisers work across more than 60 hotel properties in the EVENT portfolio.

Got it Covered, which was designed in response to insights garnered in focus groups with clients and event organisers across a range of sectors and industries, offers conference and event planners an integrated, real-time communication tool to manage requests and facilitate seamless and efficient event management.

The Got it Covered technology is a custom development that responds to the unique needs of event planners. At the touch of a button event facilitators are connected with the hotel team, instantly opening the lines of communication so that requests for AV assistance, room temperature changes, catering requirements, changes to scheduling and any other requests can be completed with no disruption to the conference or event.

The technology also allows for event organisers and facilitators to send direct, custom messages removing the need to physically find the specific hotel or event contact, enhancing the experience for delegates and making it easier for conference facilitators by putting instant communication in the palm of their hand.

Patrick Scheiber, National Conference & Events Manager Rydges Hotels, said, “There was a real opportunity to streamline how we support event facilitators in our properties. We conducted focus groups and asked our teams and our clients for feedback on what could improve meetings and events and the result is Got it Covered.

“The technology is now live across our hotels in Australian and New Zealand and the response has been overwhelmingly positive with clients and hotel teams benefiting from having a bespoke platform that delivers instant requests, an instant response and instant service. Ultimately it means that from the moment you arrive at our hotels to the conclusion of your event our teams have got it covered”.

In addition to the Got it Covered mobile site, EVENT have also launched Got it Covered Conference Kits, which package all the little things that are commonly requested by event organisers in one simple pack.
