Street Names Tell History of Muswellbrook

Early Muswellbrook
Muswellbrook is a large town in the Upper Hunter region of  NSW Australia. Its many houses, shops, offices and industries are located in streets that have all been named for various special reasons. Some are names to recognize significant people, whilst others are named for the estates they are located in, such as the "Wine Estate" and "Tree Estate".

Some street names go back a long time when Muswellbrook was first established as a small town. Others are the street names in the new subdivisions that are being developed now to cope with the demands for increased housing as more families move to Muswellbrook for employment opportunities.

A local resident, Mr Bill Spicer, together with local historian, Mr Bruce James, published a book titled "Street Names ...in Muswellbrook Town" in 2009 detailing the background of many of the street names in Muswellbrook.

They have recently written a second book titled "More Street Names ... in Muswellbrook Shire - a Brief History". This new book contains information about some of the new subdivisions, such as Northview and Eastbrook Links, as well as the Industrial Estate.

One street name in this estate has had several changes over the year Thomas Mitchell Drive was first named the Thomas Mitchell's Road in 1839. It has been known as various names throughout time, including Greta Road, Ayredale Road, and Mitchell Line of Road.

The new boom will be launched on 14 February at the Muswellbrook Library at 3pm. People are invited to bring in or email their favourite photo of Muswellbrook showing its historical past for display on the day.

People are warmly invited to attend this book launch. Indicate your intention to attend  by phoning Rosemary at the Muswellbrook Library on 6543 1913 or send an email to rosemary.logue@muswellbrook.nsw.gov.au
