Sydney’s Magnificent GPO: Discover 150 Years of Hidden History on a Free Heritage Tour

Former Sydney General Post Office
Sydney visitors can step inside one of the city’s most remarkable historic buildings and discover its fascinating stories without paying an entry fee.

The former Sydney General Post Office, now home to The Fullerton Hotel Sydney, is offering a complimentary GPO Heritage Tour that takes visitors behind the grand sandstone facade and into the history of one of Sydney’s most recognisable landmarks.

The historic GPO building is now 152 years old, with construction beginning in 1866 under the guidance of Colonial Architect James Barnet. The first stage opened in 1874, while the famous clock tower was completed later in the nineteenth century.

Step Inside Sydney’s GPO History

Meeting at the concierge of The Fullerton Hotel Sydney in Martin Place, the heritage tour takes visitors on a journey through the building’s remarkable past.

The approximately 90-minute experience reveals stories that are easy to miss when simply walking past the GPO. Visitors can discover the building’s connection with Sydney’s early development, its former postal operations and the people and technology that once connected Sydney with the wider world.

One fascinating feature is the Tank Stream, Sydney’s historic freshwater watercourse, but there is considerably more to discover beyond it.

Architecture, Sculptures and Curious Stories

Tank Stream
The GPO is renowned for its Victorian Italian Renaissance architecture, sandstone construction and extraordinary decorative details.

Among the highlights are the 24 classical carved heads representing people from different countries and regions. Visitors can also hear the story behind the controversial Pitt Street caricatures dating from the nineteenth century and discover more about the building’s grand arcade, sculptures and clock tower.

The tour also explores the fascinating evolution of communications in Sydney, including the building’s former telegraph and telephone facilities. The GPO’s telegraph operating room was once an important hub connecting Sydney with the rest of the world, while the Heritage Ballroom was originally home to Sydney’s first public telephone exchange.

A Free Sydney Experience for Visitors

For travellers looking for unusual things to do in Sydney, the GPO Heritage Tour offers an opportunity to experience the city’s history from a different perspective.

Rather than simply admiring the building from Martin Place, visitors can explore its hidden stories, architectural details and remarkable transformation through more than a century and a half of Sydney history.

The public tour currently operates at 12 noon on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The tour is free, lasts approximately 90 minutes and involves around 2,327 steps. The heritage tour does not include access to the GPO Clock Tower.
