Da Nang, Viet Nam, Leads the Way in Green Tourism with 219 Green Stay Standards

Da Nang Green Stay
Da Nang, one of Viet Nam’s most popular coastal holiday destinations, is taking an important step towards sustainable tourism with the launch of Da Nang Green Stay, a new programme designed to help hotels and accommodation providers adopt environmentally responsible practices.

Featuring 219 green tourism standards, the initiative aims to protect natural environments, preserve cultural heritage and improve the quality of tourism experiences. It also supports Da Nang’s ambition to become a leading green, high-quality and sustainable tourism destination in central Viet Nam.

For travellers seeking eco-friendly accommodation, the programme offers an encouraging sign that sustainability is becoming an increasingly important part of Viet Nam’s tourism industry.

Da Nang Green Stay: A New Standard for Sustainable Accommodation

The Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has introduced the programme in cooperation with the Swiss Tourism for Sustainable Development project, known as ST4SD.

Drawing on standards established by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, Da Nang Green Stay provides accommodation businesses with a structured framework for assessing and improving their environmental and operational performance.

The 219 criteria cover a wide range of areas, including energy efficiency, water conservation, low-carbon emissions, recycling, wastewater management, food safety, food waste reduction and the protection of biodiversity.

The standards also address staff training, responsible purchasing, visitor experiences, native plant species and broader environmental protection measures.

This comprehensive approach recognises that sustainable accommodation involves more than reducing plastic use. It requires businesses to consider their impact on the environment, local communities, employees and visitors.

Three Levels Encourage Hotels to Go Greener

Official launch Da Nang Green Stay
The Da Nang Green Stay programme features three voluntary levels, allowing accommodation providers to progress according to their size, resources and existing sustainability practices.

Level 1 includes 54 criteria and is designed for businesses beginning their transition towards greener operations.

Level 2 covers 124 criteria for accommodation providers that have already established a foundation of sustainable practices.

Level 3 incorporates all 219 criteria and is intended for businesses demonstrating leadership in sustainable tourism development.

This flexible structure allows a wide range of accommodation businesses to participate while encouraging continuous improvement.

Benefits for Hotels and Responsible Travellers

The programme aims to make sustainability both an environmental responsibility and a practical business advantage.

By improving energy and water efficiency, reducing waste and strengthening recycling systems, participating accommodation providers can potentially lower operating costs. Better staff training and more responsible purchasing can also support improved service quality and more efficient operations.

For visitors, greener accommodation can provide greater confidence when choosing where to stay. Travellers increasingly interested in responsible holidays can look for businesses that take measurable steps to reduce their environmental footprint and contribute to the destination’s long-term wellbeing.

The initiative also supports Da Nang’s tourism brand by helping accommodation providers demonstrate a commitment to quality and sustainability.

Swiss Partnership Supports Viet Nam’s Green Tourism Goals

Da Nang Green Stay
Andri Meier, Deputy Head of Cooperation at the Embassy of Switzerland in Viet Nam, welcomed the programme as a practical framework for accommodation establishments to introduce greener practices and make sustainability an integral part of destination management.

Switzerland is supporting the initiative through the ST4SD project, strengthening cooperation on sustainable tourism development.

Da Nang’s adoption of the standards also reflects a wider commitment to improving tourism management and supporting Viet Nam’s ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

From Plastic Reduction to a Sustainable Tourism Future

Da Nang’s journey towards greener tourism builds on earlier initiatives in the region. The campaign to say no to plastic bags began on the Cham Islands, off the coast of Hoi An, in 2009. Hoi An subsequently strengthened its reputation as a green destination, with provincial green tourism criteria approved in 2021.

Nguyen Thi Hoai An, Deputy Director of the city’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, has highlighted the growing importance of green practices as a quality standard, market value and competitive advantage.

Training courses, a practical guidebook and instructional videos are planned to help accommodation businesses understand the requirements and assess their performance.

Why Da Nang Is Worth Considering for a Greener Holiday

Da Nang Green Stay
Da Nang offers travellers a coastal destination in central Viet Nam where beaches, local culture, regional cuisine and access to heritage attractions can form part of a memorable holiday.

With the introduction of Da Nang Green Stay, the city is strengthening the foundations for more responsible accommodation and tourism experiences.

For visitors planning a trip to Viet Nam, the initiative provides another reason to consider sustainability when selecting a hotel or resort. As more businesses embrace greener practices, Da Nang is positioning itself for a tourism future that balances visitor enjoyment, environmental protection and benefits for local communities.
