Thaleitaung Cave: Myanmar’s New Underground Attraction Emerging in Kayin State

Thaleitaung Cave
Travellers seeking new natural attractions in Myanmar may soon have another reason to visit Hpa-an, with Thaleitaung Cave being developed as a potential new tourist destination in Kayin State.

The natural cave, located in Naungkamyaing village in Hpa-an Township, is the focus of a tourism development initiative being led by the Kayin State tourism working committee. A field investigation was conducted at the cave on 4 August 2026 as authorities assessed its potential as a new attraction.

Discovering Thaleitaung Cave

Thaleitaung Cave is part of the spectacular limestone landscape surrounding Hpa-an, an area renowned for dramatic karst mountains, caves, green countryside and cultural attractions.

The recent site inspection was led by the director of the Directorate of Hotels and Tourism as part of efforts to investigate the cave and consider how it could be developed for tourism.

According to Tourism Hpa-an, the project could eventually make Thaleitaung Cave a popular destination for visitors looking to discover more of Kayin State's natural landscapes.

An Easy Addition to a Hpa-an Journey

One of the attractions of the proposed destination is its accessibility from Hpa-an.

Tourism Hpa-an reports that visitors can reach the cave by travelling from Hpa-an through the Myinegyingu entrance, followed by approximately 15 minutes of driving. A directional sign made from logs on the left side of the road helps identify the route to the site.

This accessibility could make Thaleitaung Cave a convenient addition to an itinerary exploring the wider Hpa-an region.

Kayin State’s Remarkable Cave Country

Hpa-an is already well known for its extraordinary limestone scenery and cave attractions.

Myanmar's Ministry of Hotels and Tourism describes Kayin State as a landscape of limestone peaks, lush green paddy fields and numerous caves. Established attractions include Sadan Cave, Kawgun Cave, Bayin Nyi Cave and Yathae Pyan Cave.

This gives Thaleitaung Cave an opportunity to become part of a broader nature and cave tourism experience around Hpa-an.

Tourism Development With Nature in Mind

Developing a natural cave into a visitor attraction requires careful planning to protect its geological features while providing safe and appropriate access.

The current Thaleitaung initiative remains under development, so travellers should check local tourism information before planning a visit and should not assume that facilities or visitor access are already available.

For visitors interested in nature, geology and less-established destinations, the development of Thaleitaung Cave offers an intriguing glimpse of what could become another highlight of Hpa-an tourism.

Explore Hpa-an and Kayin State

With limestone mountains rising above green farmland and a collection of remarkable caves, Hpa-an offers travellers a distinctive combination of nature, culture and adventure.

As Thaleitaung Cave progresses through the tourism development process, it could add another fascinating chapter to Kayin State's growing reputation as one of Myanmar's most distinctive destinations for cave and karst tourism.
