Head On Photo Festival Sydney 2026: Discover Powerful Stories Through the Lens of More Than 700 Photographers

Head On Photo Festival Sydney
Sydney will become a global showcase for photography when the Head On Photo Festival returns from 6 to 29 November 2026, presenting 93 free exhibitions featuring more than 700 photographers from over 30 countries.

Now in its 17th year, Australia's leading international photography festival invites visitors to explore compelling visual stories about conflict, migration, culture, identity, family, climate change and everyday life. With exhibitions at Bondi Beach Promenade, Bondi Pavilion and Paddington Reservoir Gardens, the festival offers an inspiring cultural experience for Sydney residents and visitors.

Photography That Opens Windows on the World

The 2026 Head On Photo Festival brings together established international photojournalists, acclaimed portrait photographers and emerging creative voices. Their work encourages audiences to look beyond headlines and discover the people, experiences and emotions behind the images.

Festival Director Moshe Rosenzveig OAM describes photography as a powerful way to experience unfamiliar places and reconsider the world around us.

From intimate portraits to documentary images captured in conflict zones, the program explores how photography can communicate stories that words alone sometimes struggle to express.

International Stories of Conflict, Identity and Humanity

Among the festival's major international exhibitions is ICE – broken families by American photojournalist Carol Guzy, a four-time Pulitzer Prize winner. Photographed in New York in 2025, the series examines the effects of immigration enforcement on asylum seekers, children and families.

British photographer Giles Clarke presents Sudan: in time of war, documenting the human consequences of conflict following three journeys through Sudan over 18 months.

In My people in Gaza, Palestinian photojournalist Abdelrahman Alkahlout captures civilian life, displacement and conflict through images shaped by his experience photographing Gaza since 2014.

Other international highlights include Before ten am by French photographer Veronique Vial, revealing celebrities in private morning moments, and Seen/Unseen: the migrant children by Chinese-American photographer Tianqiutao Chen, which combines his portraits of migrant children in Beijing with photographs taken by the children themselves.

Australian Photography Celebrates People and Place

Australian photographers feature prominently in the 2026 festival, with exhibitions exploring regional communities, urban life and the country's cultural heritage.

In Australian Lustre, Trent Mitchell draws on family history, childhood memories and 15 years of photography to examine the landscapes, traditions and contradictions that shape Australian identity.

Sydney photojournalist Glenn Lockitch revisits the city's nightlife in TAXI! Sunset to sunrise, presenting colour-film portraits of passengers photographed while he drove a taxi between 2003 and 2009. His taxi became a travelling studio for capturing strangers, conversations and the atmosphere of Sydney after dark.

Joe Kennedy's The Revivalists documents the Red Dust Revival, where vintage motorsport enthusiasts gather in Western Australia to celebrate historic machines and early Australian motorsport culture.

Additional Australian exhibitions include Michele Aboud's portraits of artists in The Puppeteers, James Farr's Faces of the Outback, and the WA Life Photo Awards, showcasing 15 finalists documenting life across Western Australia.
