Let the Memory Live Again: Meet the New Jellicle Cast of CATS in Australia

CATS
The 40th Anniversary Revival Returns to Theatre Royal Sydney

This winter, one of the world’s most beloved musicals makes its long-awaited return to Australian stages. CATS, the timeless theatrical phenomenon by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is back in all its glittering glory for its 40th Anniversary celebration—beginning at Theatre Royal Sydney, followed by seasons in Adelaide and Melbourne. Audiences can prepare to be swept into the whimsical world of the Jellicle cats, brought to life by a vibrant new all-Australian cast.

Introducing Australia’s Jellicle Stars

Leading the pride is rising star Gabriyel Thomas as Grizabella, the once-glamorous feline who delivers the heart-wrenching anthem Memory. Her performance promises to bring new emotional depth to this iconic role.

Joining her is crowd favourite Todd McKenney, who will charm audiences as both the dapper Bustopher Jones and the ageing thespian Asparagus. Operatic talent Mark Vincent takes on the role of Old Deuteronomy, the wise leader who guides the Jellicle cats through their moonlit gathering. Musical theatre favourite Lucy Maunder portrays the caring Jellylorum, adding grace and warmth to the line-up.

A Cast of Charismatic Characters

The new production features a line-up brimming with energy and charisma. Des Flanagan brings attitude and flair to the rebellious Rum Tum Tugger, Jarrod Draper embodies Munkustrap, the noble storyteller who keeps the Jellicle Ball in motion, and Leigh Archer delights as Jennyanydots, the matriarch with a knack for order and mischief.

A Magical Night at the Jellicle Ball

CATS
Adapted from T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, this production brings together song, dance, and verse in a vivid celebration of imagination. On one enchanted night each year, the Jellicle cats gather for the Jellicle Ball, where their leader Old Deuteronomy will choose one cat to ascend to the Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a new Jellicle life.

Audiences can expect breathtaking choreography, stunning stagecraft, and the unforgettable score that has made CATS a record-breaking global hit. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or discovering it for the first time, this production is designed to captivate.
