As global travelers increasingly seek meaningful and authentic cultural connections, Māori tourism in New Zealand is experiencing an extraordinary surge. According to recently released Census data, the sector has grown by an impressive 23 percent since 2018, reaching a current value of $1.2 billion. At the forefront of this growth is Rotorua-based Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa, a luxurious, iwi-owned wellness retreat that blends traditional Māori healing practices with world-class spa indulgence.
Rotorua, long considered the cultural heart of Aotearoa, hosted TRENZ 2025 this year, New Zealand’s largest international tourism trade event. With over 30 Māori operators participating, the city reaffirmed its place as a leading destination for cultural tourism, and Wai Ariki played a key role in elevating that story to an international audience.
Wai Ariki: Wellness with a Cultural Soul
Perched on the lakefront in Rotorua, Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa is the first and only iwi-owned luxury wellness facility in New Zealand. Developed by local iwi Ngāti Whakaue and managed by Belgravia Leisure, the $60 million spa offers a distinctive fusion of traditional Māori values and world-class hospitality. Visitors experience more than relaxation—they are immersed in a narrative of heritage, healing, and identity.
This May, Wai Ariki hosted the NZ Māori Tourism and Tourism New Zealand breakfast, welcoming key buyers from the Asia market. The event, held alongside TRENZ 2025, was a celebration of Māori-led innovation and enterprise, and a powerful demonstration of the sector's momentum.General Manager Debbie Robertson says the increasing demand for Māori tourism stems from a deep desire among travelers to connect on a more emotional and cultural level.
“Māori tourism is thriving because our offerings provide something deeply authentic,” she explains. “Visitors aren't just seeing the culture—they're feeling it. It’s a sense of place, purpose, and belonging that's unique to our country.”
Numbers That Tell a Story
The latest Te Ōhanga Māori report reveals a thriving ecosystem of Māori entrepreneurship and enterprise. Māori-owned businesses now exceed 24,000, and the Māori economy is valued at a staggering $126 billion. Within that, the Māori tourism sector has risen sharply in value from $975 million in 2018 to $1.2 billion in 2023.
These numbers reflect more than economic growth—they illustrate a cultural shift where indigenous voices are shaping the future of tourism in New Zealand.
Looking Ahead: Culture as a Cornerstone of Tourism
As international visitors continue to look for immersive experiences that connect them with a destination’s soul, Māori tourism offers an unparalleled opportunity. From guided cultural experiences and indigenous storytelling to healing spa rituals grounded in centuries-old wisdom, the future of travel in Aotearoa is firmly rooted in its past.In Rotorua, Wai Ariki and its iwi partners are not only leading the way but setting new standards for what cultural tourism can be—respectful, regenerative, and deeply moving.
