Myanmar Reopens Its Doors: Tourist e-Visas Back in Action

A Sign of Resilience in the Wake of Crisis

In a significant and welcome move, Myanmar has officially resumed issuing electronic tourist visas after a temporary suspension caused by the devastating March 28 earthquake. This decision signals a turning point for the country's struggling tourism sector, marking both recovery and readiness to reconnect with the global travel community.

The 7.7-magnitude quake, which tragically claimed thousands of lives and caused widespread disruption to infrastructure, forced the Ministry of Immigration and Population to halt e-Visa processing earlier in April. Now, with digital systems restored, tourist e-Visas are once again available from April 22, 2025.

Digital Access to a Land of Ancient Wonders

The reactivation of Myanmar’s e-Visa system offers an efficient gateway to a country rich in cultural and natural beauty. Citizens of over 100 nations—including Australia, the United States, Canada, and many across Europe—can apply online for a 28-day tourist visa. The application requires a valid passport, a recent photo, a return ticket, and a confirmed hotel booking. The fee is 50 US dollars, and visas are processed in a minimum of three business days.

Approved travelers can enter Myanmar via its three major international airports—Yangon, Mandalay, and Nay Pyi Taw—or through the Kawthaung land border with Thailand.

A Reinvigorated Welcome to Global Travelers

For a nation still healing from the compounded challenges of natural disaster and political unrest, the return of e-Visas is more than just a logistical update—it is a statement of intent. Myanmar is ready to welcome the world once again to its gilded temples, colonial-era cities, and untouched landscapes.

Local tourism operators, hotels, and community-based travel enterprises are eager to see the return of international guests. The economic impact of tourism has long been vital for Myanmar’s communities, and the restoration of this crucial visa service is a beacon of hope for many.

A Reopening That Matters

While challenges remain, the reopening of Myanmar’s e-Visa system serves as a reminder of the country’s resilience. It also underscores the importance of sustainable, respectful tourism in supporting recovery and preserving heritage.

Travelers considering Myanmar for their next journey are encouraged to stay informed, respect local conditions, and contribute positively to the communities they visit.
