How to See Vivid Sydney 2025: Four Dreamy Ways to Wander

Vivid
Plan Like a Local and Discover the Festival’s Best-Kept Secrets

After fifteen years lighting up the Harbour City, Vivid Sydney has become more than just a festival—it’s a Sydney tradition. From May 23 to June 14, the city comes alive with light installations, live music, late-night talks, and extraordinary food experiences. But ask any Sydneysider, and they’ll tell you: the magic of Vivid is all about how you see it. Here are four unique ways to explore Vivid Sydney 2025, each designed to help you skip the crowds, save your energy, and soak up every brilliant moment.

1) A Trail of Bright Ideas

Vivid Sydney is more than a feast for the eyes—it’s a chance to light up your mind. This year’s festival theme, Dream, sets the stage for thought-provoking events and immersive storytelling.

Begin with Why We Sleep in the CBD, a talk by renowned neuroscientist Matthew Walker that dives deep into the science behind our dreams and health. For lifestyle inspiration, catch Martha Stewart live on stage at ICC Sydney for a night of stories, insights, and advice from one of America’s most influential tastemakers.

For something more experiential, visit the Sydney Theatre Company’s Wharf 2 for Inside the Dream Factory: (I Don't Dream, I Float), a sensory experience blending water, light, and imagination. Or travel into the speculative future at Barangaroo’s Endling, where aerial theatre and projections ask whether humanity can rewrite its fate.

Don’t miss I Dream of Reality at The Goods Line near Central Station, a futuristic XR exhibit where artists and researchers present an altered world shaped by technology and climate change. Wrap up your cerebral circuit with Where Do Ideas Come From?—a behind-the-scenes talk from TIME magazine’s creative director, D.W. Pine, exploring the stories behind its most iconic covers.

2) The Best of Vivid for Kids and Families

Seeing Vivid through a child’s eyes can be just as magical as the installations themselves—if you know where to go. Keep the experience stress-free with family-friendly highlights scattered across the city.

Luna Park in the Dark transforms the iconic theme park into a vintage-style carnival, where rides glow under the night sky and performers evoke the park’s 1930s roots. For older kids and teens, Stranger Things: The Experience offers a hands-on, multi-sensory journey through Hawkins, complete with actors, effects, and scenes co-created by the original show’s team.

Over at Tumbalong Park in Darling Harbour, inflatable tunnels and glowing play zones make up the Elysian Collection—part futuristic playground, part art installation. Nearby, Fly to the Moon at Barangaroo lets kids swing in front of a giant inflatable moon, making for a perfect photo op and joyful memory.

Don’t forget to visit the Starscape Tunnel on The Goods Line—40 metres of star-shaped lights, echoing the glow-in-the-dark stickers from childhood ceilings. Arrive early and layer up; Sydney evenings in June can bring a brisk chill.

Novotel Sydney on Darling Harbour and Novotel Darling Square both offer free accommodation and breakfast for children under 16 when staying with their parents, making them ideal basecamps for your family’s Vivid adventure.

3) A Festival of Food: Where to Eat at Vivid 2025

Your taste buds deserve to come along for the ride at Vivid Sydney 2025. Food is woven into the fabric of the festival, with culinary creativity as dazzling as the lights themselves.

Start with the Graduates Showcase at FoodLab Sydney in The Rocks—a bold, seven-course dining experience crafted by migrant and refugee chefs, each dish telling a deeply personal story. Back at The Goods Line, the ever-popular Vivid Fire Kitchen serves up flame-cooked delights from pitmasters near and far. For a spice-forward twist, stop by the new Spice Lounge on Maryanne Street and relax by fire pits with a plate of smoky, aromatic bites.

The Vivid Chef Series in the CBD brings together big-name local chefs and global stars to craft menus that defy borders, blending diverse cuisines with the best of NSW’s seasonal produce. Over at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, Dream Mist takes diners on a journey through scent, story, and Vietnamese flavours. You’ll enjoy a three-course meal by chef Luke Nguyen and leave with a custom Dream Mist perfume to remember the evening.

For the most exclusive experience, book a table at Saltbush and Starlight Dining at the Sydney Opera House. With projections swirling above and a First Nations-inspired feast by Mark Olive on your plate, it’s a truly unforgettable night.

4) Following the Sound: Vivid’s Top Music Moments

If the lights bring the wonder, the music brings the soul. Vivid Sydney 2025 has curated a soundscape to match its visual splendour, with something for every music lover.

Begin in Martin Place with Tangerine Dream at City Recital Hall, where synthesised soundscapes meet decades of pioneering electronic music. At the Sydney Opera House, ANOHNI and the Johnsons will perform Mourning The Great Barrier Reef, a powerful blend of music and environmental advocacy set against visuals of Australia’s vulnerable marine life.

Also performing at the Opera House is Jessica Pratt, whose delicate psych-folk melodies feel tailor-made for a festival themed around dreams. And at Tumbalong Park, the free Tumbalong Nights series features a special event: PASIFIX, a celebration of Pacific Islander culture with reggae, soul, and hip-hop from artists like Justin Wellington, Siala, and Yirrmal.

One final not-to-miss show: An Evening with Warren Ellis, presented by the Sydney Film Festival. A rare appearance by the legendary musician will include stories, live performance, and a preview of his new conservation-focused documentary.
