LACMA - "INTERSCOPE REIMAGINED" (JAN. 30 – FEB. 13, 2022)
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Interscope Records, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) presents Artists Inspired by Music: Interscope Reimagined, an exhibition that explores the label's groundbreaking music through visual art. An intergenerational group of artists were invited to select albums and songs from the Interscope catalog - a majority of the works are newly-commissioned pieces that will be presented to the public for the first time.
Featured visual artists include Cecily Brown, Lauren Halsey, Rashid Johnson, Takashi Murakami and Ed Ruscha. The inspiration for more than 50 artworks includes iconic Interscope musicians Dr. Dre, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, Nine Inch Nails, Lady Gaga and more.

"BLACK AMERICAN PORTRAITS" - LACMA (THROUGH APRIL 17, 2022)
Envisioned in part as a tribute to Two Centuries of Black American Art, guest-curated by David Driskell at LACMA 45 years ago, Black American Portraits reframes portraiture to center Black American subjects, sitters, and spaces. Spanning over two centuries from c. 1800 to the present day, this selection of approximately 140 works draws primarily from the museum's permanent collection and highlights emancipation and early studio photography, scenes from the Harlem Renaissance, portraits from the Civil Rights and Black Power eras, and multiculturalism of the 1990s.
"HAYAO MIYAZAKI" - ACADEMY MUSEUM OF MOTION PICTURES (THROUGH JUNE 5, 2022)
Now open on Museum Row, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is the largest institution in the United States devoted to the arts, sciences, and artists of moviemaking.
The Academy Museum's inaugural temporary exhibition, Hayao Miyazaki marks the first North American museum retrospective dedicated to the work of its celebrated namesake. The exhibition features more than 300 objects, including original imageboards, character designs, storyboards, layouts, backgrounds, posters, and cels from Studio Ghibli’s archives—including pieces on public view outside of Japan for the first time.

On view through Oct. 30, 2022, Bond in Motion is the largest official James Bond vehicle exhibit in the U.S., featuring 30+ screen-used cars, motorcycles, boats, submarines, helicopters and scale filming models of aircraft from six decades of 007 movies.
The Petersen's first-ever Formula One exhibit, Pole Position (through June 5, 2022) features race cars driven by Aryton Senna, Michael Schumacher and more.
"BECOMING JANE" - NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM (THROUGH APRIL 17, 2022)
Now on view at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall is a hands-on, multimedia exhibition that celebrates the extraordinary life and work of the world-renowned conservationist and ethologist. Dr. Goodall's work studying the lives of chimpanzees in the wild captured the world's imagination, and her story continues to inspire new generations. Tickets are now on sale at the NHM website.

"ANGKOR: THE LOST EMPIRE OF CAMBODIA" - CA SCIENCE CENTER (FEB. 16 - SEPT. 5, 2022)
The world premiere of Angkor: The Lost Empire of Cambodia will launch at the California Science Center on Feb. 16, 2022. The exhibition uses science to reveal insights into the rise and fall of ancient Angkor as well as its legacy. Once considered the most extensive metropolis in the world, Angkor houses more than 100 temples, now mysteriously quiet and surrounded by the dense Cambodian forests.
Guests will explore the ancient empire of Angkor through 120 original artifacts - half on tour outside Cambodia for the first time - as well as hands-on exhibits and an immersive 3D IMAX movie. Visitors will learn how the tools of archeology, from decoding inscriptions to aerial surveying and laser scanning, have enriched our knowledge about the engineering and cultural marvels of an empire, the daily life of its people, and the environmental challenges that shaped its future.
SPARKS AT WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL (FEB. 7-8, 2022)
The influential art-pop duo of Ron and Russell Mael, Sparks will perform two concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown LA. With a career that spans 50+ years, the LA natives and UCLA alums are renowned for their witty lyrics and inventive music, which effortlessly shifts between glam, hard rock, chamber pop, and electro disco - sometimes within the same song.

"CONCERTS CELEBRATING JERRY MOSS" - THE MUSIC CENTER (FEB. 11-12, 2022)
Taking place at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Concerts Celebrating Jerry Moss: Co-Founder of A&M Records features a stellar lineup of music icons, many of whom were discovered and nurtured by the legendary "music man." Scheduled performers for both concerts include Herb Alpert, Burt Bacharach, Merry Clayton, Sérgio Mendes and Sting, with more artists TBA. The program will also feature special appearances by Tim Curry and other artists, who will offer their perspectives on the enormous contributions that Jerry Moss and A&M Records have made to the music industry on a global level.
Tickets start at $82 and are now on sale at The Music Center website. Proceeds will support The Music Center’s free and low-cost programming, ensuring that arts experiences are accessible for all residents of Los Angeles County, a cause that has been Jerry's lifelong passion and mission.

"POUSSIN AND THE DANCE" - GETTY CENTER (FEB. 15 - MAY 8, 2022)
Nicolas Poussin was the most influential French painter of the 17th century, and an artist fascinated by dance. Portraying dancing nymphs and satyrs, he drew inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman sculpture but evolved a style all his own. He envisioned dramatic—even violent—action with a choreographer’s eye. Organized with the National Gallery, London, Poussin and the Dance at the Getty Center considers Poussin’s dancing pictures through the dual lenses of art history and contemporary dance, establishing a dialogue between the old master’s work and new dances on film by LA choreographers.
"ASSYRIA: PALACE ART OF ANCIENT IRAQ" - GETTY VILLA (THROUGH SEPT. 5, 2022)
Assyrian kings in the ninth to seventh centuries BC decorated their palaces with masterful relief sculptures that represent a high point of Mesopotamian art, both for their artistic quality and sophistication and for their vivid depictions of warfare, rituals, mythology, hunting, and other aspects of Assyrian court life. The importance of these ancient treasures has only increased with the recent destruction, by ISIS, of many of the reliefs that remained in Iraq.
Now on view at the Getty Villa, Assyria: Palace Art of Ancient Iraq presents a selection of these masterworks as a special loan from the British Museum in London. This is the second long-term loan exhibition in the gallery devoted to The Classical World in Context, a new gallery at the Villa highlighting cultures that influenced and interacted with the classical world of Ancient Greece and Rome.
FRIEZE LOS ANGELES (FEB. 17-20, 2022)
After a one-year hiatus, Frieze Los Angeles will return in February 2022 to present the best of LA and international contemporary art by emerging and established artists, alongside a curated program of talks, films and artists’ projects. Previously hosted at Paramount Pictures Studios, the next edition of Frieze Los Angeles will take place in Beverly Hills at 9900 Wilshire Blvd.
