“God’s crossing" at Lake Suwa

Witness the rare omiwatari, meaning “God’s crossing,” at Nagano prefecture’s Lake Suwa which freezes over every winter.

The phenomenon occurs when the icy surface stretches due to the temperature differences between day and night, creating jagged ridges of ice that push through the surface. 

It is said that they’re the footsteps of Suwa Taisha Shrine’s god. 

There are three areas where these ridges appear, and you can view them from the lakeshore – it’s unsafe to go on the lake, as the thickness of the ice is unstable.
