Said to have been created by lumberjacks in Akita prefecture’s ancient forests, Magewappa are unique wooden vessels characterised by their craftsmanship, beautiful grain, and fragrant aroma.
The town of Odate – which has been making them for over 400 years – is especially renowned for making wooden Magewappa products.
These items include bento boxes, steamers and even bathtubs, made by steam-bending thin strips of cedar or cypress. In addition to buying them, there are also workshops where you can experience making Odate Magewappa yourself!
