With a growing number of Australians choosing to holiday at home, award winning tour operator APT shares its top five winter hot spots - a range of sightseeing experiences included on its many Western Australia (WA) itineraries. Take a look, book yourself a trip and follow the sun to see the hottest attractions WA has to offer this winter:
- Ningaloo Reef: Cruise over the largest fringing reef in Australia, the Ningaloo Reef, in a glass bottom boat and perhaps take to the water with a snorkel for a more up close and personal experience with some of the 250 species of coral and over 500 species of fish that call this reef home. Depending on the time of year, you may also spot a Whale Shark. Then soak up the sun with a picnic lunch on the beach at Turquoise Bay.
- King Edward River: With the sun on your back, take time out to enjoy a swim and a lunch break on the King Edward River. Admire the water eroded rock, worn smooth after eons of wet seasons and revealing fascinating patterns of reds, oranges and charcoals. A short distance away, take an easy walk to see fine examples of Indigenous rock art, the Wandjina spirit with his mouthless face and the delicate lines of the ancient Gwion Gwion or Bradshaw art.
- Oxers Lookout, Karijini National Park: At Oxers Lookout in Karijini National Park, stand looking out over an ancient land of ragged ranges and breathtaking gorges 100 meters below. From this vantage point you can appreciate the majesty of Hancock, Weano, Joffre and Red Gorges all from the one spot, a breathtaking view that should not be missed.
- Galvan's Gorge: Stand inside a framed photograph at Galvan's Gorge. Ancient Wandjina rock art on the wall to your right, waterfall cascading into a pristine swimming pool in front of you and a boab standing sentinel on the escarpment. Red dirt at your feet and blue Kimberley skies over head, why be anywhere else?
- Cockburn Range: Charge your glasses and take in a majestic sunset with the Pentecost River below you, framed by the Cockburn Range. Listen to the cries of the birds as they settle and marvel at the expanse of country that surrounds you.
