Queens Park in Maryborough’s botanical gardens attracts tourist with tree plantation

Council has planted an avenue of mature Kauri Pine (Agathis) and Bunya Pine (Araucaria) along the rail corridor in heritage-listed Queens Park in Maryborough.

“There is historical evidence of an avenue of Kauri and Bunya Pines in that area,” Community, Heritage and Family Services Portfolio Councillor, George Seymour said.

“Through this project we are restoring the heritage significance of the landscape and the horticultural character of this avenue of trees.”

The botanical gardens have been at the heart of Maryborough since the mid 1860′s and were gazetted by the Queensland Colonial Government in October 1873.

Renowned for its sweeping river views, rolling green lawns, ornamental flower beds and unique heritage features; Queens Park is one of Australia’s earliest botanic gardens and is an important part of Maryborough’s distinctive character, he said.

“Queens Park is a real heritage gem of which we can be really proud. Council is always conscious of the need to preserve and promote its heritage features.”
