For the first time, the Cradle Mountain Huts Walk will now be available during the winter months, allowing ardent hikers to experience this stunning landscape from a totally different perspective.
The 8-day Cradle Mountain Huts Winter Walk will trek through the World Heritage-listed Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair National Park along the Overland Track in small groups of no more than 10 with two highly experienced guides and a hut support manager.
During the winter months, the high peaks along the Overland Track, as well as certain sections along the trail, receive fresh snowfalls, turning the Cradle Mountain National Park into a winter wonderland.
There will be five departures for the Cradle Mountain Huts Winter Walk in this year's winter season, with two walks in July, two in August and one in September. Not for the faint hearted, the Winter Overland Track Walk will require walkers to have a high level of fitness with multi-day walking experience, able to carry pack weights of around 12kg-15kg with extra gear. The itinerary has been designed to enable walkers to go at a slower pace, as potential weather conditions will throw up different challenges.
Each evening's accommodation is in one of the private huts nestled away in this remarkable Park, including Barn Bluff Hut, Pine Forest Moor Hut, Pelion Hut, Kia Ora Hut and Windy Ridge Hut. They are exclusively for guests of the Cradle Mountain Huts Walk and provide a welcome haven at the end of each day with piping hot showers, drying rooms for damp clothes and boots, and cosy heating, along with a hearty three-course dinner and fine Tasmanian wines.
The cost of the 8-day Winter Walks is $3,450 per person and includes return transfers between Launceston and the walk base, accommodation in the private Cradle Huts, meals on the track and non-alcoholic beverages plus a selection of Tasmanian wines, National Park pass, use of a backpack and waterproof walking jacket and two qualified guides for the duration of the walk.
The introduction of the Winter Walks program follows on from the success of the Adventure Walks program which has been running over the last two seasons, which includes the Climb Every Mountain Adventure Walks, for those looking for something a little more challenging. This walk follows the same path but allows all guests on the departure to climb the mountains that are found along the way. These include Cradle Mountain, Barn Bluff, Mt Oakleigh and Mt Ossa providing some of the most outstanding views in the country.
Meanwhile, the Bay of Fires Lodge Walk is now offering its guests some well-earned rest and relaxation with the opening of a new eco spa last October.
As part of the four day/three night walk, guests spend two days at the Lodge, and have been enthusiastic in their take-up of the new spa offering. The spa is located in a beautiful timber retreat adjacent to the award winning Lodge - the only building on 20km of outstanding coastal wilderness spectacularly located on a hilltop 40 metres above the ocean.
The spa offers breathtaking views with an outdoor deck and inside lounging spaces, extensive wellness and wilderness library, and a small spa boutique. Treatments vary from massages, facials and body treatments with a special focus on rejuvenation. Natural, chemical-free spa products are used in all spa treatments. A therapeutic bath experience is also available.
The spa reinforces the Walk's commitment to providing guests with the ultimate walking experience – combining fresh air and fitness, and spectacular scenery with a touch of style.
This includes fabulous food and wine that walkers have come to appreciate on the trip. Well known Tasmanian chef, Daniel Alps again has his stamp on the seasonal menus which sees the guides specially trained to use the best of local Tasmanian produce and other seasonal ingredients.
